Rate and temperature independent model calibrations for J2 plasticity and Wilkins failure models for 17-4PH H1150 stainless steel

This memo’s objective is to report a calibration of the J2 plasticity model with the Wilkins ductile failure criterion for 17-4 PH H1150 stainless steel under slow loading at room temperature. The calibration of the hardening function was based on uniaxial tension tests, while that of the failure model included data from tension tests on notched specimens, a butterfly specimen shear test, and a set of interrupted compression tests on shear hat specimens. The procedure was that described in, minus the rate and temperature dependence.

Evaluation of Guardbanding Methods for Calibration and Product Acceptance

The Primary Standards Lab employs guardbanding methods to reduce risk of false acceptance in calibration when test uncertainty ratios are low. Similarly, production agencies guardband their requirements to reduce false accept rates in product acceptance. The root-sum-square guardbanding method is recommended by PSL, but many other guardbanding methods have been proposed in literature or implemented in commercial software. This report analyzes the false accept and reject rates resulting from the most common guardbanding methods. It is shown that the root-sum-square method and the Dobbert Managed Guardband strategy are similar and both are suitable for calibration and product acceptance work in the NSE.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry Calibration and Heat Capacity

The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) 404 F3 is a machine that heats up to 1500 degrees Celsius, and collects/evaluates thermal properties such as heat capacity, crystallization, glass transition, and more. The first part of the project is based around calibrating the DSC 404 F3 using the given procedures and manuals. This ensures that the DSC 404 F3 is working properly and does not have any issues moving forward. After the calibration is complete, the second part is to start testing. There will be tests conducted on known metals, such as steel and aluminum, in which there is data to compare it to. If the data collected is not accurate compared to its known values, further troubleshooting will need to ensue to ensure that the following process does not give wrong readings. Then, testing will begin for High Entropy Alloys(HEA) and the interesting issue with these is that there is no data to compare these to. The goal of finding the values of the HEA is to find a compatible alloy that we can use in future projects.

GeoCarb Calibration Campaign Field Campaign Report

The GeoCarb Calibration Campaign, referred to as the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) calibration campaign within this report for clarity, involved a series of single- and multiple-day Bruker EM27/SUN Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer deployments at the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory in Oklahoma. The EM27/SUN instruments directly measure infrared solar radiation in a wavelength range from 4000 to 11000 cm -1 at a spectral resolution of 0.5 cm -1 and varied temporal resolution of approximately 15 seconds. The solar radiation observed by these spectrometers contains information about the concentrations of atmospheric constituents present between the instruments and the top of the atmosphere, as every gas and particle in the atmosphere absorbs solar radiation at different wavelengths depending on their physical and chemical makeup. Through retrieval algorithm processing, the solar radiation data collected by EM27/SUN instruments can be used to infer total column dry-air mole fractions, or total column concentrations, of different trace gases present in the atmosphere. These total column concentrations, denoted as Xgas , represent the concentration, in ppb or ppm, of a trace gas in the column of atmosphere between an instrument and the top of the atmosphere. EM27/SUN instruments are primarily used to infer total column concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH 4 ), and water vapor.

Applications of Alternate Actinide Calibration on Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) Analysis of H-Canyon Highly Enriched Uranium Legacy Material at the Savannah River Site (SRS)

The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) uses Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) to support numerous programs at the Savannah River Site (SRS). As part of an objective to prepare high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU), the SRS H-Canyon needed analysis of legacy uranyl nitrate that is stored at its Outside Facilities (HOF). With the application of a standard practice for alternate actinide calibration on ICP-MS, SRNL has successfully demonstrated its capability to characterize the uranium/actinide composition of the HOF tanks that are intended for consolidation prior to preparation of the HALEU. A comparison of the uranium analytical results between recently upgraded SRNL ICP-MS and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) instrumentation shows the alternate actinide calibration is a valid complementary method when used in conjunction with other analytical techniques (Davies-Gray Potentiometric Titration). The methods, instrumentation, and ongoing developments on ICP-MS at SRNL will be discussed.

Calibration and validation of the foundation for a multiphase strength model for tin

In this work, the Common Model of Multi-phase Strength and Equation of State (CMMP) model was applied to tin. Specifically, calibrations of the strength-specific elements of the CMMP foundation were developed with a combination of experiments and theory, and then the model was validated experimentally. The first element of the foundation is a 10 multi-phase analytic treatment of the melt temperature and the shear modulus for the solid phases. These models were parameterized for each phase based on ab initio calculations using the software VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulations Package) based on density functional theory (DFT). The shear modulus model for the ambient β phase was validated with ultrasonic sound speed measurements as a function of pressure and temperature. The second element of the foundation is a viscoplastic strength model for the β phase, upon which strength for inaccessible higher-pressure phases can be scaled as necessary. The stress-strain response of tin was measured at strain rates of 10 -3 to 3 x 10 3 s -1 and temperatures ranging from 87 to 373 K. The Preston-Tonks-Wallace (PTW) strength model was fit to that data using Bayesian model calibration. For validation, six forward and two reverse Taylor impact experiments were performed at different velocities to measure large plastic deformation of tin at strain rates up to 10 5 s -1 . The PTW model accurately predicted the deformed shapes of the cylinders, with modest discrepancies attributed to the inability 20 of PTW to capture the effects of twinning and dynamic recrystallization. Some material in the simulations of higher velocity Taylor cylinders reached the melting temperature, thus testing the multiphase model because of the presence of a second phase, the liquid. In simulations using a traditional modeling approach, the abrupt reduction of strength upon melt resulted in poor predictions of the deformed shape and non-physical temperatures. With CMMP, the most deformed material points evolved gradually to a mixed solid-liquid but never fully liquid state, never fully lost strength, 25 stayed at the melt temperature as the latent heat of fusion was absorbed, and predicted the deformed shape well.

Calibrating LArPix for TinyTPC

LArTPCs provide sensitivity to GeV signals, such as accelerator neutrinos and part of the supernova neutrino spectrum. TinyTPC is a LArTPC test stand for R&D of LAr doping to expand the reach of LArTPCs down to the 1-10 MeV range, which would substantially enhance the flagship analyses of experiments like DUNE, while enabling low energy analyses. We aim to dope LAr with Xe and pho- tosensitive dopants to expand the LArTPC range by converting hard-to-detect scintillation light to efficiently detected ionization charge. A critical element of the data analysis in TinyTPC is calibrating the readout. This poster will cover the calibration of TinyTPC, a pixelated liquid argon detector, where we find the distance a muon travels through each pixel. We then calculate the energy loss of muons traveling through the detector from cosmic data. We can reconstruct the path of the particles through the TPC using a density-based clustering algorithm designed to sort straight cosmic muon tracks from low energy radioactive decay curled paths and electronic noise

An Advanced Microscopic Energy Consumption Model for Automated Vehicle:Development, Calibration, Verification

The automated vehicle (AV) equipped with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system is expected to reduce the fuel consumption for the intelligent transportation system. This paper presents the Advanced ACC-Micro (AA-Micro) model, a new energy consumption model based on micro trajectory data, calibrated and verified by empirical data. Utilizing a commercial AV equipped with the ACC system as the test platform, experiments were conducted at the Columbus 151 Speedway, capturing data from multiple ACC and Human-Driven (HV) test runs. The calibrated AA-Micro model integrates features from traditional energy consumption models and demonstrates superior goodness of fit, achieving an impressive 90% accuracy in predicting ACC system energy consumption without overfitting. A comprehensive statistical evaluation of the AA-Micro model's applicability and adaptability in predicting energy consumption and vehicle trajectories indicated strong model consistency and reliability for ACC vehicles, evidenced by minimal variance in RMSE values and uniform RSS distributions. Conversely, significant discrepancies were observed when applying the model to HV data, underscoring the necessity for specialized models to accurately predict energy consumption for HV and ACC systems, potentially due to their distinct energy consumption characteristics.

H420 Imager Calibration Procedure: Field of View Scan

Gamma-ray imagers with coded apertures have a finite field of view (FOV) within which an image of a source can be generated. A “FOV scan” is a facet of imager calibration procedure that involves collecting specialized data for a range of source locations filling the FOV in order to understand and correct for differences in imager performance. Systematic distortions reveal relative displacements between internal imager components, which can be accounted for in data analysis. The success of this scan requires a stable imager position during the full measurement duration (~hours). This document summarizes the hardware and software tools required to conduct a FOV calibration scan of an H3D H420 Coded Aperture Gamma-Ray Imager.

MIP dQ/dx Calibration in DUNE ND-LAr Prototypes with Pixelated Charge Readout

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be a next-generation long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment that will employ LArTPC technology in a near detector placed at Fermilab and a far detector at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, at a baseline of 1300 km. The DUNE Liquid Argon Near Detector (ND-LAr) design takes into account the high neutrino intensity expected from the beam at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF): 35 modules, each containing two optically separated time projection chambers, are instrumented with a pixel-based, true 3D charge readout alongside scintillation light traps to disentangle the O(100) interactions expected per 10us beam spill. A robust prototyping program supports ND-LAr’s design: the 2x2 Demonstrator consists of four scaled-down ND-LAr modules exposed to the NuMI beam at Fermilab, and the Full Scale Demonstrator (FSD) is a single ND-LAr module tested with cosmic rays at the University of Bern. We present here an analysis of minimum ionizing particle (MIP) tracks selected from 2x2 beam data and FSD cosmic ray data used to benchmark the pixel-based charge readout simulation and calibration in both detectors, with the ultimate goal of validating the design of DUNE ND-LAr as well as informing future calibration methods. This poster will showcase the dependence of the charge response on track inclination as well as a per-pixel dQ/dX extraction.
