Array automated assembly task low cost silicon solar array project, phase 2

Analyses of solar cell and module process steps for throughput rate, cost effectiveness, and reproductibility are reported. In addition to the concentration on cell and module processing sequences, an investigation was made into the capability of using microwave energy in the diffusion, sintering, and thick film firing steps of cell processing. Although the entire process sequence was integrated, the steps are treated individually with test and experimental data, conclusions, and recommendations.

Large area silicon sheet by EFG

A multiple growth run with three 10 cm cartridges was carried out with the best throughput rates and time percentage of simultaneous three ribbon growth achieved to date in this system. Growth speeds were between 3.2 and 3.6 cm/minute on all three cartridges and simultaneous full width growth of three ribbons was achieved 47 percent of the time over the eight hour duration of the experiment. Improvements in instrumentation and in the main zone temperature uniformity were two factors that have led to more reproducible growth conditions in the multiple ribbon furnace.

Laser annealing of ion implanted CZ silicon for solar cell junction formation

The merits of large spot size pulsed laser annealing of phosphorus implanted, Czochralski grown silicon for function formation of solar cells are evaluated. The feasibility and requirements are also determined to scale-up a laser system to anneal 7.62 cm diameter wafers at a rate of one wafer/second. Results show that laser annealing yields active, defect-free, shallow junction devices. Functional cells with AM 1 conversion efficiencies up to 15.4% for 2 x 2 cm and 2 x 4 cm sizes were attained. For larger cells, 7.62 cm dia., conversion efficiencies ranged up to 14.5%. Experiments showed that texture etched surfaces are not compatible with pulsed laser annealing due to the surface melting caused by the laser energy. When compared with furnace annealed cells, the laser annealed cells generally exhibited conversion efficiencies which were equal to or better than those furnace annealed. In addition, laser annealing has greater throughput potential.

Development of Advanced Czochralski Growth Process to produce low cost 150 KG silicon ingots from a single crucible for technology readiness

The modified CG2000 crystal grower construction, installation, and machine check-out was completed. The process development check-out proceeded with several dry runs and one growth run. Several machine calibrations and functional problems were discovered and corrected. Several exhaust gas analysis system alternatives were evaluated and an integrated system approved and ordered. A contract presentation was made at the Project Integration Meeting at JPL, including cost-projections using contract projected throughput and machine parameters. Several growth runs on a development CG200 RC grower show that complete neck, crown, and body automated growth can be achieved with only one operator input. Work continued for melt level, melt temperature, and diameter sensor development.

Developing new architectures for the Block 2 VLBI correlator system

The overall LSI (large-scale integrated circuits) architecture design and current status of the VBLI (very long baseline interferometry) block 2 correlator is addressed. The VBLI correlator algorithms demand a computing system that provides a throughput of hundreds of millions of instructions per second to perform cross-correlation detection for six baselines. The LSI technology lights the way for the computation of complex parallel process and is raising the upper bound of computerization.

Evaluation of a three-processor architecture for a satellite packet switch

The architecture of a microprocessor-based packet switch using three processors for use on-board satellites is presented. The operation of the switch involves three distinct functions, namely, the input, the routing and the output functions. Each of these functions is performed by one of the three microprocessors. The operation of the switch along with those of the corresponding software routines are explained. An expression for the throughput is presented. A queue theoretic model of the switch is developed. Analytical expressions for the overall average response time at the various queues are obtained. A number of graphs showing the average response time as a function of some parameters of the switch are also presented.

Real time software tools and methodologies

Real time systems are characterized by high speed processing and throughput as well as asynchronous event processing requirements. These requirements give rise to particular implementations of parallel or pipeline multitasking structures, of intertask or interprocess communications mechanisms, and finally of message (buffer) routing or switching mechanisms. These mechanisms or structures, along with the data structue, describe the essential character of the system. These common structural elements and mechanisms are identified, their implementation in the form of routines, tasks or macros - in other words, tools are formalized. The tools developed support or make available the following: reentrant task creation, generalized message routing techniques, generalized task structures/task families, standardized intertask communications mechanisms, and pipeline and parallel processing architectures in a multitasking environment. Tools development raise some interesting prospects in the areas of software instrumentation and software portability. These issues are discussed following the description of the tools themselves.

Sideband-aided receiver arraying

Efforts to increase the amount of data that can be received from outer planet missions by coherently combining signals from ground antennas in such a way as to increase the total effective aperture of the receiving system are discussed. As these signals become weaker, the baseband arraying technique in current use degrades somewhat due to carrier jitter. One solution to this problem is Sideband-Aided Receiver Arraying (SARA). In SARA, sidebands demodulated to baseband in a master receiver at the largest antenna are used to allow slave receivers in the other antennas to track the sideband power in the signal rather than the carrier power. The already existing receivers can be used in the slaves to track and demodulate the signals in either a residual carrier or a suppressed carrier environment. The resultant baseband signals from all the antennas can then be combined using existing baseband combining equiment. Computer simulations of SARA show increases in throughput (measured in data bits per second) over baseband-only combining 17 percent at Voyager 2 Uranum encounter and 31 percent at Neptune for a four-element antenna array and (7, 1/2) convolutional coding.

Large area silicon sheet by EFG

Progress was made in improving ribbon flatness and reducing stress, and in raising cell performance for 10 cm wide ribbon grown in single cartridge EFG furnaces. Optimization of growth conditions resulted in improved ribbon thickness uniformity at a thickness of 200 micron, grown at 4 cm/minute, and growth at this target speed is routinely achieved over periods of the order of one hour or more. With the improved ribbon flatness, fabrication of large area (50 cm2) cells is now possible, and 10 to 11% efficiencies were demonstrated on ribbon grown at 3.5 to 4 cm/minute. Factors limiting performance of the existing multiple ribbon furnace were identified, and growth system improvements implemented to help raise throughput rates and the time percentage of simultaneous three-ribbon growth. However, it is evident that major redesign of this furnace would be needed to overcome shortfalls in its ability to achieve the Technical Features Demonstration goals of 1980. It was decided to start construction of a new multiple ribbon furnace and to incorporate the desired improvements into its design. The construction of this furnace is completed.

Closed-form solutions of performability

It is noted that if computing system performance is degradable then system evaluation must deal simultaneously with aspects of both performance and reliability. One approach is the evaluation of a system's performability which, relative to a specified performance variable Y, generally requires solution of the probability distribution function of Y. The feasibility of closed-form solutions of performability when Y is continuous are examined. In particular, the modeling of a degradable buffer/multiprocessor system is considered whose performance Y is the (normalized) average throughput rate realized during a bounded interval of time. Employing an approximate decomposition of the model, it is shown that a closed-form solution can indeed be obtained.

Wafering insight provided by the ODE method

The orientation-dependent etching method of slicing was investigated to see if it could be used to form more slices from high quality silicon crystals than can be achieved by mechanical slicing methods. Orientation-dependent slicing uses preferential etching down narrow slots in a silicon slab on form slices. The method has several possible advantages including high slicing yield (sq m/kg), plane parallel, thin slices, ready for processing and the chance of high throughput and low costs. There are limitations in the need for simple crystals, and in restricted depth of slicing.

Development of advanced Czochralski Growth Process to produce low cost 150 KG silicon ingots from a single crucible for technology readiness

The goals in this program for advanced czochralski growth process to produce low cost 150 kg silicon ingots from a single crucible for technology readiness are outlined. To provide a modified CG2000 crystal power capable of pulling a minimum of five crystals, each of approximately 30 kg in weight, 150 mm diameter from a single crucible with periodic melt replenishment. Crystals to have: resistivity of 1 to 3 ohm cm, p-type; dislocation density below 1- to the 6th power per cm; orientation (100); after growth yield of greater than 90%. Growth throughput of greater than 2.5 kg per hour of machine operation using a radiation shield. Prototype equipment suitable for use as a production facility. The overall cost goal is $.70 per peak watt by 1986. To accomplish these goals, the modified CG2000 grower and development program includes: (1) increased automation with a microprocessor based control system; (2) sensors development which will increase the capability of the automatic controls system, and provide technology transfer of the developed systems.

A case for inherent geometric and geodetic accuracy in remotely sensed VNIR and SWIR imaging products

Significant aberrations can occur in acquired images which, unless compensated on board the spacecraft, can seriously impair throughput and timeliness for typical Earth observation missions. Conceptual compensations options are advanced to enable acquisition of images with inherent geometric and geodetic accuracy. Research needs are identified which, when implemented, can provide inherently accurate images. Agressive pursuit of these research needs is recommended.

Investigation of test methods, material properties, and processes for solar cell encapsulants

Technical investigations concerned the development of advanced cure chemistries for lamination type pottants; the continued evaluation of soil resistant surface treatments, and the results of an accelerated aging test program for the comparison of material stabilities. New compounds were evaluated for efficiency in curing both ethylene/vinyl acetate and ethylene/methyl acrylate pottants intended for vacuum bag lamination of solar cells. One compound in particular, designated Lupersol - TBEC (Lucidol Division of Pennwalt Corp.) was found to be unusually effective in promoting the rapid cure of both these materials. Formulation of these resins with TBEC resulted in compositions of very high gel content, lower temperatures of activation, and much lower cure times, even in the ethylene/methyl acrylate polymer that is more difficult to cure. It is expected that TBEC modified pottant formulations may permit the lamination/encapsulation step to be operated at lower temperatures, higher speed, higher throughput and a much wider tolerance for intentional or accidental variations in the cure schedule. An experimental program continued to determine the effectiveness of soil resistant coatings.

Tunable birefringent filters

This article reviews the types and capabilities of birefringent filters. The general operating principles of Lyot (perfect polarizers), partial polarizing, and Solc (no internal polarizers) filters are introduced. Appropriate techniques for tuning each filter type are presented. Field of view of birefringent filters is discussed and is compared to Fabry-Perot and interference filters. The transmission and throughput advantages of birefringent filters are shown. Finally, the current state of the art in practical filters is reviewed.
