Bulk submillimeter-wave mixers: Strain and superlattices

Strained germanium crystals, doped with gallium, were used as heterodyne mixers at THz frequencies, with infrared bandwidths approaching a GHz. The mixer performance (conversion loss and mixer noise) was analyzed in terms of nonlinearities associated with acceptor levels and with relaxation rates of free holes. Comparison was made with similar mixers employing low lying donor levels in high purity GaAs and with hot electron InSb mixers.

Low-pass interference filters for submillimeter astronomy

Low-pass (long-wave transmitting) interference filters, suitable for broadband photometric observations, previously have been constructed from series of capacitive grids stretched on thin Mylar. These filters have the desired optical properties of high transmission, sharp cut-ons, and good blocking at short wavelengths. Their designs, however, do not scale from one wavelength to another and their performance can deteriorate at low temperatures due to differential contraction of the dielectric backing and the supporting structure. The deviation of these early filters from the predicted scaling was due primarily to the difference in refractive index between the backing material and the medium between the grids. In the present paper, filters are described in which dielectric spacers are used, instead of air, as the medium between the grids. This technique has improved the scaling and has reduced the distortion from differential contraction.

Submillimeter wave survey of the galactic plane

The survey measured, over virtually the entire galactic plane, the distribution and basic physical conditions of the coolest dust component of the interstellar medium. The instrument designed for observations of extended, low surface brightness continuum emission consisted of a balloon borne, gyro stablized, 1.2 m Cassegrain telescope and a liquid cooled photometer. The design, integration, tests, and flight operation of the survey are presented.

Submillimeter observations of solar limb-brightening in the total solar eclipse of 31 July 1981

Eight flights of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) were devoted to solar observation. The successful observation of a total solar eclipse was accomplished. The observations were made simultaneously at 30, 50, 100, and 200 microns. The successful adaptation of the KAO for solar observations thus provided the most detailed data to date in this spectral band. The results from a preliminary analysis of the KAO data are summarized: (1) the 200 micron limb is extended about 3 arc sec above the 30 micron limb, indicating the prescence of cool dense material up to the altitudes of spicules; (2) strong radial darkening of the quiet sun intensity profile appeared at 200 microns, probably an indication that hot material in the low chromosphere is recessed into vertical magnetic flux tubes embedded in a cooler nonmagnetic substrate, which obscures the heated material approaching the limb; (3) active regions were observed to undergo a strong increase in contrast above the quiet sun background at wave lengths of 100 microns and longer; and (4) the moon was mapped for use as a photometric standard for determining the absolute intensity of the sun in all four wavelength bands.

Optically pumped submillimeter-waves and applications

Rapid development of optically pumped lasers has shown the potential to be used as a source for a high resolution spectrometer. In this connection, a compact, stable FIR laser was designed, fabricated, and assembled, integrating both the pump laser and the FIR cavity in the same mechanical structure for its improved (both thermal and mechanical) stability and mobility. Performance of the mixer structure which was designed and constructed for the evaluation of the Schottky diodes was found to be satisfactory. The feasibility of generating tunable sideband for molecular spectroscopy studies was demonstrated.

The JPL millimeter, submillimeter and microwave line catalog

The catalog includes molecules of interest in the interstellar medium, in planetary atmospheres and in the Earth's atmosphere. Different units than those on the AFGL tape are used. For citing line frequencies in the microwave region. Either the experimental errors or the propagation of errors from the fit are included on the tape. This gives an estimate of how accurate the frequencies are. The intensity units are defined as follows: the logarithm of the intensity unit is the cross section times the frequency in MHz. This is essentially the same unit as on the AFGL tape, but contains fewer factors of the speed of light. The catalog is available to the scientific community either as a tape or on microfiche (filmed in frequency sorted and molecule sorted format).

Laboratory millimeter and submillimeter spectra of CO/+/

The strong electric dipole-allowed transitions of the molecular ion CO(+) in the region 235-470 GHz have been measured in the laboratory. The laboratory spectra at 235 GHz appear to confirm the claim by Erickson et al. (1981) to have observed CO(+) in OMC-1.

The submillimeter wavelength spectrum of methanol

Observations and assignments of some of the absorption lines in methanol from 200 to 850 GHz are reported. A simple phenomenological model is described which allows interpretation of spectra and prediction of new lines with little computational effort.

A high resolution submillimeter map of OMC-1

The 400 micron emission from the central region of OMC-1 has been mapped with 35 resolution. This region contains two emission peaks with sizes of about 0.5 arcmin, separated by approximately 1.5 arcmin which probably represent distinct density condensations in the molecular cloud. Comparison of observations with earlier far-infrared observations shows the two condensations to have similar optical depths and dust masses. A bar of 400 micron emission is found about 15 arcsec SE of the ionization front near Theta 2 A Ori, indicating a sharp increase in dust density in the neutral matter outside the ionized region.

Cometary NH - Ultraviolet and submillimeter emission

A description is presented of the results of computer calculations on the molecule NH, which is an important constituent of cometary comae, and a probable, but an as yet undetected, interstellar species. Attention is given to spectroscopic properties, the treatment of solar spectral data, and radiative transfer calculations. The results of calculations for the Einstein A-coefficients are given in an appendix, where the entries for the X-X and A-A transitions depend on the assumed permanent electric-dipole moment squared. Rotational-spin-Lambda-doublet energy levels used for statistical equilibrium population densities are listed in a table.

Submillimeter extensions of the solar limb determined from observations of the total eclipse of 1981 July 31

First results are presented of observations of a lunar occultation of the solar limb made from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory in the 30 micrometr, 50 micrometer, 100 micrometer, and 200 micrometer continuum during the total solar eclipse of 1981 July 31. The solar limb was extended at the longer wavelengths up to 1000 km higher than predicted from smooth plane-parallel chromospheric models. Results at both second and third contact show the infrared limb extensions to be approximately 0".8, 1"5, 2".5 and 3".0 above the visible limb in the observed bands, respectively. A possible interpretation proposes chromospheric fine structure inhomogeneities of greater density than presently incorporated in models of the middle chromosphere.

Collaborative research in tunneling and field emission pumped surface wave local oscillators and amplifiers for infrared and submillimeter wavelengths under director's discretionary fund

Progress is reported in work towards the development of surface wave sources for the infrared and sub-millimeter portion of the spectrum to be based upon electron pumping by tunneling electrons in metal-barrier-metal or metal-barrier-semiconductor devices. Tunneling phenomena and the coupling of radiation to tunnel junctions were studied. The propagation characteristics of surface electro-magnetic modes in metal-insulator-p(++) semiconductor structures as a function of frequency were calculated. A model for the gain process based upon Tucker's formalism was developed and used to estimate what low frequency gain might be expected from such structures. The question of gain was addressed from a more fundamental viewpoint using the method of Lasher and Stern.

First detection of the ground state JK = 1 sub 0 going to 0 sub 0 submillimeter transition of interstellar ammonia

The JK = 1 sub 0 approaching O sub 0 transition of ammonia at 572.5 GHz was detected in OMC-1 from NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The central velocity of the line (VLSR approximately = 9 km/s) indicates that it originates in the molecular cloud material, not the hot core. The derived filling factor of approximately 0.09 in a 2' beam implies a source diameter of approximately 35" if it is a single clump. This clump area is much larger than that derived from observations of the sub 1 inversion transition. The larger optical depth in the 1 sub 0 approaching 0 sub 0 transition (75-350) can account for the increased source area and linewidth as compared with those seen in the 1 sub 0 inversion transition.
