HPS-RL: Hyperparameter tuning for deep RL applications (HPS-RL) v1

Genetic Algorithms meets Deep RL for Hyperparameters Hyperparameter optimization and architecture search can easily become cumbersome and finding the right hyperparameters can seriously impact the robustness of the deep RL application being developed. We use genetic algorithms to evolve optimum deep RL architectures in a scalable manner. HPS-RL is designed to work with multiple gym enviornments, allow users to test their own optimization functions and tune multi-objective parameters in multiple deep RL algorithms. HPS-RL uses multi-threading and is being extended with mpipy for distributed processing on HPC. https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.11182

Fine-tuning of mTOR signaling by the UBE4B-KLHL22 E3 ubiquitin ligase cascade in brain development

ABSTRACT Spatiotemporal regulation of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is pivotal for establishment of brain architecture. Dysregulation of mTOR signaling is associated with a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we demonstrate that the UBE4B-KLHL22 E3 ubiquitin ligase cascade regulates mTOR activity in neurodevelopment. In a mouse model with UBE4B conditionally deleted in the nervous system, animals display severe growth defects, spontaneous seizures and premature death. Loss of UBE4B in the brains of mutant mice results in depletion of neural precursor cells and impairment of neurogenesis. Mechanistically, UBE4B polyubiquitylates and degrades KLHL22, an E3 ligase previously shown to degrade the GATOR1 component DEPDC5. Deletion of UBE4B causes upregulation of KLHL22 and hyperactivation of mTOR, leading to defective proliferation and differentiation of neural precursor cells. Suppression of KLHL22 expression reverses the elevated activity of mTOR caused by acute local deletion of UBE4B. Prenatal treatment with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin rescues neurogenesis defects in Ube4b mutant mice. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that UBE4B and KLHL22 are essential for maintenance and differentiation of the precursor pool through fine-tuning of mTOR activity.

Automated tuning of a ring-assisted MZI-based interleaver for Kerr frequency combs

We demonstrate a compact ring-assisted Mach–Zehnder interferometer (RAMZI)-based silicon photonic interleaver with a 400 GHz free spectral range (FSR), featuring flat passbands exceeding a spectral range of 50 nm. Additionally, we introduce a novel, to the best of our knowledge, add-on structure and tuning method enabling automated compensation for fabrication imperfections, precise shaping of the RAMZI flat-top passbands, and alignment with Kerr comb lines. Experimental results have shown successful interleaving of eight channels of distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers as well as a 200 GHz Kerr comb, both achieving an extinction ratio of approximately 20 dB.

Fine-tuning TrailMap: The utility of transfer learning to improve the performance of deep learning in axon segmentation of light-sheet microscopy images

Light-sheet microscopy has made possible the 3D imaging of both fixed and live biological tissue, with samples as large as the entire mouse brain. However, segmentation and quantification of that data remains a time-consuming manual undertaking. Machine learning methods promise the possibility of automating this process. This study seeks to advance the performance of prior models through optimizing transfer learning. We fine-tuned the existing TrailMap model using expert-labeled data from noradrenergic axonal structures in the mouse brain. By changing the cross-entropy weights and using augmentation, we demonstrate a generally improved adjusted F1-score over using the originally trained TrailMap model within our test datasets.

Towards Improving luminosity using optics tuning and data-driven methods

The results of Run 24 experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) for improving luminosity using optics tuning are presented in this study. In the first experiment, MADx matching was used to output magnet strengths corresponding to specific s star movements around Interaction Region 8 (IR8). The corresponding Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) signal was measured in place of luminosity, and Bayesian Optimization aids search of optimal movements. It was found that values retrieved from matching were inaccurate, resulting in negative feedback loops. The second experiment focused on calculating accurate s star movements. The matching method was replaced with a linear sensitivity matrix, directly relating optics to power supply, and its null space was used to fit constraints such as hysteresis effects. At the experiment, beam losses were observed at collimators around boundary of IR8, which were fixed for the third experiment. Dynamic mode decomposition was also introduced to improve quality of turn-by-turn (TBT) data as well as accuracy and consistency of optics measurements at IR8. These improvements will be tested in the experiment of next RHIC run for luminosity optimization.

Nonlinear Tune-Shift Measurements in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator

The first experimental run of Fermilab’s Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) ring aimed at testing the concept of nonlinear integrable beam optics. In this report we present the preliminary results of the studies of a nonlinear focusing system with two invariants of motion realized with the special elliptic-potential magnet. The key measurement of this experiment was the horizontal and vertical betatron tune shift as a function of transverse amplitude. A vertical kicker strength was varied to change the betatron amplitude for several values of the nonlinear magnet strength. The turn-by-turn positions of the 100 MeV electron beam at twenty-one beam position monitors around the ring were captured and used for the analysis of phase-space trajectories.

Managing Sn-Supply to Tune Surface Characteristics of Vapor-Diffusion Coating of Nb₃Sn

Nb₃Sn promises better RF performance (Q and E_{acc}) than niobium at any given temperature because of superior superconducting properties. Nb₃Sn-coated SRF cavities are now produced routinely by growing a few microns thick Nb₃Sn films inside Nb cavities via the tin vapor diffusion technique. Sn evaporation and consumption during the growth process notably affect the quality of the coating. Aiming at favorable surface characteristics that could enhance the RF performance, many coatings were produced by varying Sn sources and temperature profiles. Coupon samples were examined using different material characterization techniques, and a selected few sets of coating parameters were used to coat 1.3 GHz single-cell cavities for RF testing. The Sn supply’s careful tuning is essential to manage the microstructure, roughness, and overall surface characteristics of the coating. We summarize the material analysis of witness samples and discuss the performance of several Nb₃Sn-coated single-cell cavities linked to Sn-source characteristics and observed Sn consumption during the film growth process.

Apparent fine tunings for field theories with broken space-time symmetries

We exhibit a class of effective field theories that have hierarchically small Wilson coefficients for operators that are not protected by symmetries but are not finely tuned. These theories possess bounded target spaces and vacua that break space-time symmetries. We give a physical interpretation of these theories as generalized solids with open boundary conditions. We show that these theories realize unusual RG flows where higher dimensional (seemingly irrelevant) operators become relevant even at weak coupling. Finally, we present an example of a field theory whose vacuum energy relaxes to a hierarchically small value compared to the UV cut-off.

Studies of Beam Intensity Effects in Fermilab Booster Synchrotron. Part I: Introduction, Tune and Chromaticity Scans of Beam Losses

Detrimental beam dynamics effects limit performance of high intensity rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCS) such as the 8 GeV Fermilab Booster. Here we report the results of comprehensive studies of various beam intensity dependent effects in the Booster. Part I covers the dependencies of the Booster beam intensity losses on the total number of protons per pulse and on key operational parameters such as the machine tunes and chromaticities. In Part II we cross-check two methods of the beam emittance measurements (the multi-wires proportional chambers and the ionization profile monitors), analyze the intensity dependent emittance growth effects and discuss the ultimate performance of the machine now and after foreseen and proposed upgrades.

Developing Accelerated Test Protocols and Tuning Microstructures of the Common Materials to Improve Robustness, Reliability, and Endurance of SOFC Cells

This work is built on our prior work where we found that phase transformation in praseodymium nickelates, e.g. Pr 2 NiO 4 (PNO) and (Pr 1-x Nd x ) 2 NiO 4 (PNNO), can be electrochemically driven, and is substantially faster when compared to thermal annealing studies. The first task aims at an attempt to further accelerate the phase transformation in the oxygen electrode by alternating the current input in the cells, which lead to the development of accelerated test protocols (ATPs). ATPs showed up to 60x faster phase transformation and up to 10x faster performance degradation in (Pr 0.50 Nd 0.50 ) 2 NiO 4 electrodes, when compared to long-term operation under constant current density. Furthermore, the phase stable Nd 2 NiO 4 and (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 )(Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 )O 3 (LSCF6482) electrodes were tested in full cells under ATPs, and showed up to 10x faster performance degradation within 1,100 hours in a comparison with long-term thermal annealing studies and electrochemical operation under constant current density. The second task aims at the quantification of the contributions of cell components to the total impedance of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and distribution of relaxation times (DRT). Specifically, the role of gas composition at both anode and cathode was systematically studied, aiming at deconvoluting, identifying and quantifying the contributions of different electrode processes. This was achieved by first tuning the partial pressure of H 2 at the anode and subsequently varying the partial pressure of O 2 at the cathode. The results suggest that, while DRT offers a viable way of deconvoluting different times distributions, additional attention is needed before assigning a peak to a specific electrode process due to the significant overlap of the contributions from the cathode and the anode. Density function theory studies show that both Pr-vacancies and O-defects play a key role on the activity and stability for nickelates towards oxygen reduction reaction. The resident O-interstitials and oxygen ions in the PrO layer form peroxide (O 2 2- ) nearby Pr vacancies. The O 2 2- limits oxygen-ion transport due to the required additional energy to break its O-O bond. We further calculated the formation and segregation energies for different Ln ions (La, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) in PNO and CeO 2 (111) surfaces. In addition to Nd, Pm and La are suggested as potential dopants in PNO to enhance it stability without decomposition due to their more negative formation energies, lower diffusion energies, and positive separation energies.
