Technology in Focus: Power-to-X

Power-to-X is the process that converts electricity into energy carriers that can be used in industries and applications not connected to the electricity grid. By creating a product with direct process connected generation, contracted generation, or grid-delivered electricity that is in excess of current demand, production of electricity can be managed to time arbitrage energy and mitigate generation curtailment or inefficient operational reductions. In addition, creating a product potentially develops a secondary revenue stream that aids economics of the facility. This document is a high-level factsheet that provides an overview of what Power-to-X is and what it means.

Development of Material Studies at the LANL UCN Facility Focusing on Actinide Hydriding and Fission Damage

The aging of as-built actinide surfaces in static and dynamic environments is a complex problem of high importance to LANL’s core mission. Many standard material science tools used to study this problem are ideal for highly controlled, lab-made samples. The goal of this work is to use ultracold neutrons to bridge the gap between lab made and as-built surface aging studies. This capability is unique to LANL and will support our core mission.

New Tables for Infrasound Event Catalogs with a Focus on Machine Learning

Natural and anthropogenic sources such as volcanoes, earthquakes, auroral processes, chemical and nuclear explosions, rocket launches, and aircraft can generate infrasound, sound with frequencies less than 20 Hz. Both the availability of infrasound data and interest in machine learning (ML) applications have grown in recent years. Large, open-source datasets are essential to solving complex ML problems, but the field of infrasound is lacking in this arena. To increase the utility of ML for infrasound, here we present new tables for infrasound event catalogs. It is the aim that these tables be incorporated into both existing and future infrasound processing pipelines to generate large datasets ripe for use with ML/DL methods.

Options for Meeting Data Center Demand in Virginia: Focus on GETs and Reconductoring [Slides]

Data center demand growth in Virginia will need to met with many options - GETs and/or reconductoring have the potential to be part of the solution suite in the short-term and medium-term. Almost all GETs and reconductoring technologies have more favorable economics than transmission wires investments considering relatively low levels of existing wide-scale deployment. Deployment of GETs and/or reconductoring is not a one size fits all - requires detailed analysis. The complementary nature of GETs and/or reconductoring impacts have the potential to be synergistic (more congestion relief, more transfer capability, more cost savings - when implemented together).

Representative Project Design Envelope for Floating Offshore Wind Energy: A Focus on the California 2023 Federal Leases

NREL developed recommendations for a representative project design envelope (RPDE) for floating offshore wind energy projects in the California lease areas, considering industry feedback from offshore wind farm developers. The RPDE provides estimates of minimum and maximum values for project design parameters that are relevant for assessing environmental impacts. The design envelope considers the practical range of technology options that may be deployed and accounts for major physical constraints, technology feasibility, and supply chain readiness. In addition to the RPDE, this report presents four scenarios that illustrate some of the differences between technologies that could be used offshore California, as well as descriptions of the typical installation processes that are expected to be used for floating offshore wind farms.

Preliminary Screening of Features, Events, and Processes for an Arctic-Focused Climate Intervention Performance Assessment

Geoengineering, the deliberate large-scale intervention in Earth's climate system, holds significant potential in the rapidly warming Arctic, where temperatures currently rise at more than twice the global average, accelerating ice sheet and permafrost melt. This contributes to global sea-level rise and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Strategies like solar radiation management (SRM) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) could mitigate these effects; for instance, SRM techniques aim to reflect a portion of the sun's energy back into space, potentially slowing ice melt and stabilizing permafrost. However, geoengineering in the Arctic faces challenges, including potential unintended consequences on the fragile ecosystem, disruption of local weather patterns, and impacts on indigenous communities. Effective governance requires robust international cooperation, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory frameworks. Despite these challenges, geoengineering's potential benefits make it a critical research area. This report explores application of the Performance Assessment (PA) methodology to Arctic Climate Intervention, providing an initial screening of relevant features, events, and processes (FEPs). At the core of the PA approach is the identification and evaluation of FEPs that could impact the performance of the intervention scheme. Here we provide an initial screening of FEPs to consider in the application of PA to Arctic Climate Intervention.

RF Sources for Electron Accelerators With a focus on high-duty-factor, low-to-moderate energy architectures

A charged particle, such as an electron or a proton, is accelerated through its interaction with either a static (DC) or time-varying (RF) electric field. The magnitude of the accelerating field, or gradient, is typically given in units of volts per meter; in charged-particle accelerators, fields are usually expressed as kV/m or MV/m. The energy of the accelerated particle is usually expressed in terms of electron volts, or eV. An electron starting at rest at ground potential, and accelerated to an electrode with a potential of 1 kV, will have an energy of 1 keV.
