The application of model-referenced adaptive control to robotic manipulators

The achievement of quality dynamic performance in manipulator systems is difficult using conventional control methods because of both the inherent geometric nonlinearities of these systems and the dependence of the system dynamics on the characteristics of manipulated objects. A model-referenced adaptive control law is developed for maintaining uniformly good performance over a wide range of motions and payloads. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated in several simulations and the system stability as a function of input is investigated. Also developed is a 'learning signal' approach designed to minimize initial transients arising from abrupt changes in the inertial payload.

Manipulation of large objects

Remote manipulator control experiments have been conducted to investigate the problems related to the 'controlled collision' aspect of manipulation. A six degrees of freedom pantograph arm with a six-dimensional force-torque balance sensor and microprocessor-driven real-time graphics display are employed in the experiments. Among other results, it is found that the use of computer force-torque feedback loop for 'stop at contact' provides a nearly linear relation between load transfer to jigs at 'stop at contact', rate of motion, and preset force-torque threshold values for stop under limited motion and load conditions.

Hybrid position/force control of manipulators

A new conceptually simple approach to controlling compliant motions of a robot manipulator is presented. The 'hybrid' technique described combines force and torque information with positional data to satisfy simultaneous position and force trajectory constraints specified in a convenient task related coordinate system. Analysis, simulation, and experiments are used to evaluate the controller's ability to execute trajectories using feedback from a force sensing wrist and from position sensors found in the manipulator joints. The results show that the method achieves stable, accurate control of force and position trajectories for a variety of test conditions.

Calculating Clearances for Manipulators

Set of algorithms rapidly calculates minimum safe clearances for remote manipulators. Such calculations are used in design of trajectories for manipulators to ensure they do not accidentally strike surrounding objects. Structural parts are considered as cylindrical shells having circular plane areas for ends. Clearance calculation method offers special benefits in industrial robotics, particularly in automated machining.

The role of manipulator characteristics in selecting the ideal effective vehicle

A structural model of the human pilot is introduced and discussed. The model is used to provide a rationale for certain nonlinear pilot control behavior such as stick pulsing and serves as a framework for studying aspects of motor skill development. In light of the theoretical background provided by the model, some past empirical pilot response phenomena are analyzed and shown to be attributable to manipulator or control stick characteristics. In particular, some recent problems associated with pilot/vehicle performance in glideslope tracking in short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft are analyzed. The apparent contribution of the cockpit manipulator (throttle) characteristics to these problems are outlined and a solution proposed and evaluated in both simulation and flight test.

Evaluation of SMART sensor displays for multidimensional precision control of Space Shuttle remote manipulator

An enhanced proximity sensor and display system was developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and tested on the full scale Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Manipulator Development Facility (MDF). The sensor system, integrated with a four-claw end effector, measures range error up to 6 inches, and pitch and yaw alignment errors within + or 15 deg., and displays error data on both graphic and numeric displays. The errors are referenced to the end effector control axes through appropriate data processing by a dedicated microcomputer acting on the sensor data in real time. Both display boxes contain a green lamp which indicates whether the combination of range, pitch and yaw errors will assure a successful grapple. More than 200 test runs were completed in early 1980 by three operators at JSC for grasping static and capturing slowly moving targets. The tests have indicated that the use of graphic/numeric displays of proximity sensor information improves precision control of grasp/capture range by more than a factor of two for both static and dynamic grapple conditions.

Dynamic stabilization methods for bilateral control of remote manipulation

This paper discusses and analyses several control strategies for generalized, bilateral master/slave manipulator systems. In these manipulators the two arms have different dynamic/kinematic properties which implies a more difficult control problem. Attention is focused on torque/force driven arms. Required performance for the necessary control computer(s) is discussed.

Review of pseudoinverse control for use with kinematically redundant manipulators

Kinematically redundant manipulators have a number of potential advantages over current manipulator designs. For this type of arm, velocity control through pseudoinverses has been suggested. Questions associated with pseudoinverse control are examined in detail and show that in some cases this control leads to undesired arm configurations. A method for distributing joint angles of a redundant arm in a good approximation to a true minimax criterion is described. In addition several numerical considerations are discussed.

Application of identification techniques to remote manipulator system flight data

This paper addresses the application of identification techniques to flight data from the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS). A description of the remote manipulator, including structural and control system characteristics, sensors, and actuators is given. A brief overview of system identification procedures is presented, and the practical aspects of implementing system identification algorithms are discussed. In particular, the problems posed by desampling rate, numerical error, and system nonlinearities are considered. Simulation predictions of damping, frequency, and system order are compared with values identified from flight data to support an evaluation of RMS structural and control system models. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the application of identification techniques to flight data obtained from a flexible space structure.

Conceptual design of a mobile remote manipulator system

A mobile remote manipulator system has been identified as a necessary device for space station. A conceptual design for an MRMS is presented which features (1) tracks on the MRMS and guide pins only on the truss structure, (2) a push/pull drive mechanism which rotates to permit movement in four directions, and (3) spacecrane and mobile foot restraint manipulators (or arms). Operational and design features of the MRMS elements are described and illustrated. Concepts are also presented which permit rotating the operational plane of the MRMS through 90 deg. Such a system has been found to have great utility for initial space station construction, maintenance and repair, and to provide a construction capability for future station growth or large spacecraft assembly and/or servicing.

Acceleration environment of payloads while being handled by the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System

Described in this paper is the method used in the Draper Remote Manipulator System (RMS) Simulation to compute linear accelerations at the point on the SPAS01 payload where its accelerometers are mounted. Simulated accelerometer output for representative on-orbit activities is presented. The objectives of post-flight analysis of SPAS01 data are discussed. Finally, the point is made that designers of acceleration-dependent payloads may have an interest in the capability of simulating the acceleration environment of payloads while under the control of the overall Payload Deployment and retrieval System (PDRS) that includes the Orbiter and its attitude control system as well as the Remote Manipulator Arm.

On the design of contractions and settling chambers for optimal turbulence manipulations in wind tunnels

The sensitivity of a moderate axisymmetric contraction of turbulence to upstream conditions is parametrically investigated in terms of turbulence intensities and integral length scales. Semi-empirical correlations are derived to characterize the development of turbulence intensities and integral length scales downstream of typical wind-tunnel turbulence manipulators. A new approach is described, permitting wind-tunnel designers to select the characteristic mesh of the turbulence manipulators, a well as the distance from them to the contraction, in order to obtain certain required turbulence characteristics in the test section at the exit of the contraction. The design charts strongly suggest that it may not be possible to achieve small scales and low intensities simultaneously, when using a contraction ratio of nine or larger. The results also confirm that the rapid distortion theory is only valid, with a proper viscous dissipation correction, up to the 'critical point' of a contraction. At that point, the scales of the various components of the velocity are equal and intercomponent transfer from the lateral to the streamwise velocities commences.

The impact of remote manipulator structural dynamics on Shuttle on-orbit flight control

The performance of the Space Shuttle on-orbit flight control system during payload operations with the remote manipulator system is described. The changing mass and inertia distribution associated with payload manipulation can have a significant effect on the control authority provided by the orbiter's reaction control jets. Commanded payload motion and jet firings can excite significant flexure in the orbiter/manipulator/payload structure. These effects combine to stress the control capabilities of the flight control system. Data from recent flight tests is presented to illustrate these effects.

Precise control of flexible manipulators

The design and experimental testing of end point position controllers for a very flexible one link lightweight manipulator are summarized. The latest upgraded version of the experimental set up, and the basic differences between conventional joint angle feedback and end point position feedback are described. A general procedure for application of modern control methods to the problem is outlined. The relationship between weighting parameters and the bandwidth and control stiffness of the resulting end point position closed loop system is shown. It is found that joint rate angle feedback in addition to the primary end point position sensor is essential for adequate disturbance rejection capability of the closed loop system. The use of a low order multivariable compensator design computer code; called Sandy is documented. A solution to the problem of control mode switching between position sensor sets is outlined. The proof of concept for endpoint position feedback for a one link flexible manipulator was demonstrated. The bandwidth obtained with the experimental end point position controller is about twice as fast as the beam's first natural cantilevered frequency, and comes within a factor of four of the absolute physical speed limit imposed by the wave propagation time of the beam.
