NR-150B2 adhesive development

Adhesive based polyimide solutions which are more easily processed than conventional aromatic polyimide systems and show potential for use for extended times at 589K are discussed. The adhesive system is based on a solution containing diglyme as the solvent and 2,2 bis(3',4'-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane, paraphenylenediamine, and oxydianiline. The replacement of N-methylpyrrolidone with diglyme as the solvent was found to improve the adhesive strengths of lap shear samples and simplify the processing conditions for bonding both titanium and graphite fiber/polyimide matrix resin composites. Information was obtained on the effects of various environments including high humidity, immersion in jet fuel and methylethylketone on aluminum filled adhesive bonds. The adhesive was also evaluated in wide area bonds and flatwise tensile specimens using titanium honeycomb and composite face sheets. It was indicated that the developed adhesive system has the potential for use in applications requiring long term exposure to at least 589K (600 F).

Computer image processing: Geologic applications

Computer image processing of digital data was performed to support several geological studies. The specific goals were to: (1) relate the mineral content to the spectral reflectance of certain geologic materials, (2) determine the influence of environmental factors, such as atmosphere and vegetation, and (3) improve image processing techniques. For detection of spectral differences related to mineralogy, the technique of band ratioing was found to be the most useful. The influence of atmospheric scattering and methods to correct for the scattering were also studied. Two techniques were used to correct for atmospheric effects: (1) dark object subtraction, (2) normalization of use of ground spectral measurements. Of the two, the first technique proved to be the most successful for removing the effects of atmospheric scattering. A digital mosaic was produced from two side-lapping LANDSAT frames. The advantages were that the same enhancement algorithm can be applied to both frames, and there is no seam where the two images are joined.

Nondestructive determination of the depth of planar p-n junctions by scanning electron microscopy

A method was developed for measuring nondestructively the depth of planar p-n junctions in simple devices as well as in integrated-circuit structures with the electron-beam induced current (EBIC) by scanning parallel to the junction in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results were found to be in good agreement with those obtained by the commonly used destructive method of lapping at an angle to the junction and staining to reveal the junction.

Repairing sealing surfaces on aluminum castings

Approach using stylus nickel plating instead of copper and cadmium plating has simplified repair procedure. Damaged sealing surfaces are stylus nickelplated in one step. Superficial scratches and porous areas are removed more easily from repaired surface by simply lapping sealing areas to required finish. Although method is aimed for aerospace components, it may be easily incorporated into conventional aluminumcasting technology. One-step repair can be considered for cast-aluminum automobile and aircraft engines to reduce time and costs.

Design fabrication and test of graphite/polyimide composite joints and attachments for advanced aerospace vehicles

Graphite/polyimide (Gr/PI) bolted and bonded joints were investigated. Possible failure modes and the design loads for the four generic joint types are discussed. Preliminary sizing of a type 1 joint, bonded and bolted configuration is described, including assumptions regarding material properties and sizing methodology. A general purpose finite element computer code is described that was formulated to analyze single and double lap joints, with and without tapered adherends, and with user-controlled variable element size arrangements. An initial order of Celion 6000/PMR-15 prepreg was received and characterized.

NR-150 adhesive development

A polyimide precursor adhesive solution, code-named NR-056X, was developed. It reproducibly gives low void, high strength bond lines at both room temperature and 589K (600 F) using either titanium or graphite/polyimide composite adherends having 12.7 mm (1/2 in.) overlaps. Lap shear samples prepared using this adhesive and composite adherends based on graphite/NR-150B2 were shown to have a high degree of resistance to such adverse environments as air at 589K (600 F), high humidity, methyl ethyl ketone and jet fuel. Bond line toughness was illustrated by the complete resistance to cracking in the wedge-crack propagation test. The available evidence indicates that wide area composite to composite or composite to metal bonding should be feasible.

Preliminary bolted-joint data

Bolted-joint strength and failure modes for advanced graphite/polyimide composite laminates at 116K (-250 F), room temperature, and 589K (600 F) were determined to provide preliminary design data. The bolted-joint test setup for the low and elevated temperature tests is described. Test results are reported on a quasi-isotropic laminate of Celion 6000/PMR-15. Single bolt, double lap shear specimens were tested to obtain maximum joint strength and failure mode. The effect of joint geometry and temperature on joint strength and failure mode is presented.

Planar scarf joints in composite repair

This study examined the effects of varying certain important geometric parameters on the stresses in an adhesive repair of a thin composite laminate. The repair, a planar scarf joint with a doubler, was studied using finite element methods at scarf angles of 6 deg and 12 deg, damage lengths between 2.5 mm and 25 mm and doubler overlaps between 10 mm and 40 mm. Finite element models also showed that significant stress peaks occur at the ends of the scarf joint adhesive, similar to shear lag phenomena in lap joints. A bending model of the planar scarf joint with a doubler, based on mechanics of materials theory, was also developed.

High temperature adhesives for bonding Kapton

Experimental polyimide resins have been developed and evaluated as potential high temperature adhesives for bonding Kapton polyimide film. Lap shear strengths of 'Kapton'/'Kapton' bonds were obtained as a function of test temperature, adherend thickness, and long term aging at 575K (575 F) in vacuum. Glass transition temperatures of the polyimide/'Kapton' bondlines were monitored by thermomechanical analysis.

A high volume cost efficient production macrostructuring process

The paper presents an experimentally developed surface macro-structuring process suitable for high volume production of silicon solar cells. The process lends itself easily to automation for high throughput to meet low-cost solar array goals. The tetrahedron structure observed is 0.5 - 12 micron high. The surface has minimal pitting with virtually no or very few undeveloped areas across the surface. This process has been developed for (100) oriented as cut silicon. Chemi-etched, hydrophobic and lapped surfaces were successfully texturized. A cost analysis as per Samics is presented.

LARC-13 polyimide adhesive bonding

The development of an addition-curing polyimide adhesive suitable for low pressure bonding without the generation of volatiles during cure is reported. LARC-13 is designed for bonding of polyimide matrix composites and of titanium to be used above 500 F, and is based on an oligomeric bis-nadimide which allows its processing at 50 psi or less, making it suitable for the bonding of fragile honeycomb sandwich structures. Few volatiles are evolved during its cure allowing large enclosed structures to be bonded, and it has high room and elevated temperature strengths and good strength retention after short terms up to 1100 F. LARC-13 was successfully used to bond the outer and inner skins of a polyimide/graphite wing shear panel for 500 F use, and for a short-term exposure up to 1100 F. Preparation of the adhesive, bonding, aging, and testing of lap shear and honeycomb samples are discussed.

Effects of plasma sheath on solar power satellite array

The structure of the plasma sheath and equilibrium voltage distribution of a high-power solar array governs various kinds of plasma-interaction phenomena and array losses. Sheath effects of a linearly-connected array are investigated for GEO. Although the array may be large, the thin-sheath-limit analysis may be invalid, necessitating numerical methods. Three-dimensional computer calculations show that potential barriers and over-lapping sheaths can occur, i.e., structures not predictable under the thin-sheath-limit analysis, but nevertheless controlling the distribution of plasma currents impacting on the array.

Viscoelastic analysis of adhesively bonded joints

An adhesively bonded lap joint is analyzed by assuming that the adherends are elastic and the adhesive is linearly viscoelastic. After formulating the general problem a specific example for two identical adherends bonded through a three parameter viscoelastic solid adhesive is considered. The standard Laplace transform technique is used to solve the problem. The stress distribution in the adhesive layer is calculated for three different external loads, namely, membrane loading, bending, and transverse shear loading. The results indicate that the peak value of the normal stress in the adhesive is not only consistently higher than the corresponding shear stress but also decays slower.

LARC-13 adhesive development

A LARC-13 type adhesive system was developed and property data obtained that demonstrated improved thermomechanical properties superior to base LARC-13 adhesive. An improved adhesive for 589 K (600 F) use was developed by physical or chemical modification of LARC-13. The adhesive was optimized for titanium and composite bonding, and a compatible surface preparation for titanium and composite substrates was identified. The data obtained with the improved adhesive system indicated it would meet the 589 K (600 F) properties desired for application on space shuttle components. Average titanium lap shear data were: (1) 21.1 MPa (3355 psi) at RT, (2) 13.0 MPa (1881 psi) at 600 F, and (3) 16.4 MPa (2335) after aging 125 hours at 600 F and tested at 600 F.

Stress analysis of bonded plates and joints

The paper presents a general numerical method of solution to the transverse normal stress and longitudinal shear stress distributions in the adhesive layers of bonded stiffener plates, double lap joints, and strap joints, all of dissimilar orthotropic adherends. The bending deformations and the transverse shear deformations are included in the analytical model. The present influence of bending deformations of adherends on both the normal and shear stresses in adhesive layers is discussed in detail for practical cases.
