Science challenges and research opportunities for plasma applications in microelectronics

Low-temperature plasmas (LTPs) are essential to manufacturing devices in the semiconductor industry, from creating extreme ultraviolet photons used in the most advanced lithography to thin film etching, deposition, and surface modifications. It is estimated that 40%–45% of all process steps needed to manufacture semiconductor devices use LTPs in one form or another. LTPs have been an enabling technology in the multidecade progression of the shrinking of device dimensions, often referred to as Moore’s law. New challenges in circuit and device design, novel materials, and increasing demands to achieve environmentally benign processing technologies require advances in plasma technology beyond the current state-of-the-art. The Department of Energy Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences held a workshop titled Plasma Science for Microelectronics Nanofabrication in August 2022 to discuss the plasma science challenges and technical barriers that need to be overcome to continue to develop the innovative plasma technologies required to support and advance the semiconductor industry. One of the key outcomes of the workshop was identifying a set of priority research opportunities (PROs) to focus attention on the most strategic plasma science challenges to address to benefit the semiconductor industry. For each PRO, scientific challenges and recommended strategies to address those challenges were identified. Furthermore, this article summarizes the PROs identified by the workshop participants.

Opportunities for iron and steel industrial wastewater treatment and reuse in the United States

Concerns around water security in the United States have heightened the interest in industrial water treatment and reuse to improve water efficiency and operational reliability. Alongside nationwide efforts to expand industrial capacity, primary manufacturing sectors are adopting more resource-efficient technologies. This transition is expected to shift industrial water consumption patterns, driving the need for improved treatment and reuse practices. This study investigates opportunities for water use, treatment, and reuse in the iron and steel sector through a review of academic and industry literature and interviews with industry representatives. It identifies key challenges in water and wastewater management and outlines the conditions under which innovative treatment technologies could be deployed. Based on these insights, the study presents a practical water management action plan. Furthermore, it assesses water quality targets across different process operations, evaluates existing treatment technologies, and highlights challenges and opportunities for improvement relative to future performance expectations. Although water is often perceived as a low-cost commodity, industry feedback suggests that improvements in water use and treatment efficiency are typically prioritized only when they also reduce energy use, carbon emissions, or costs. This study advocates for a direct two-way partnership between industry and research audiences to bring their attention toward sustainable industrial water use, treatment, and reuse.

Hybrid Resources: Challenges, Implications, Opportunities, and Innovation

The electric power system has historically been designed to provide reliable energy to loads by using a relatively small number of well-understood generators. The distinction between load, generation, and transmission resources has been quite clear. Most of the responsibility for planning and operating a system - building a highly reliable network from less reliable parts - has been with the system manager, whether that be a utility, a regional market operator, or some similar entity. Given this historical context, many experts were initially perplexed by the rapidly growing popularity of hybrid resources, which combine multiple technologies into a single entity. Rather than depending on a system operator to provide instructions to individual technologies, hybrid resources intentionally take on more operational responsibility by optimizing and scheduling their combined functions. Interconnection queues in many regions reveal a large and growing interest in hybrids, suggesting that project developers and investors see them as providing advantages.

Algal Biomass Production via Open Pond Algae Farm Cultivation: 2020 State of Technology and Future Research

The annual State of Technology (SOT) assessment is an essential activity for platform research conducted under the Bioenergy Technologies Office. It allows for the impact of research progress to be quantified in terms of economic improvements in the overall biofuel production process for a particular biomass processing pathway, whether based on terrestrial or algal biomass feedstocks. As such, initial benchmarks can be established for currently demonstrated performance, and progress can be tracked towards out-year goals to ultimately demonstrate economically viable biofuel technologies. NREL's algae state of technology benchmarking efforts focus both on front-end algal biomass production and separately on back-end conversion to fuels through NREL's "combined algae processing" (CAP) pathway. The production model is based on outdoor long-term cultivation data, enabled by comprehensive algal biomass production trials conducted under Development of Integrated Screening, Cultivar Optimization, and Verification Research (DISCOVR) consortium efforts, driven by data furnished by Arizona State University (ASU) at the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) testbed site. The CAP model is based on experimental efforts conducted under NREL research and development projects. This report focuses on front-end algal biomass production, documenting the pertinent algal biomass cultivation parameters that were input to the NREL open pond algae farm model based on the latest DISCOVR cultivation performance data. Relative to prior 2019 benchmarks, the 2020 algae farm SOT achieved further reductions in modeled minimum biomass selling price of approximately $70/ton (roughly 10%), primarily attributable to a 16% demonstrated improvement in annual average cultivation productivity rates.

Novel white light-emitting CdSe:Mn 2+ synthesized by photo-assisted chemical bath deposition

Nowadays, white light-emitting materials have attracted extensive research due to their potential applications in lighting devices and displaying images. Several semiconductor nanoparticles have been explored to achieve efficient white light emission. In this work, we report on novel white light-emitting CdSe:Mn 2+ thin films synthesized by photo-assisted chemical bath deposition. The effect of varying the Mn 2+ ion concentrations on the thin film structure, morphology, and optical properties was investigated. X-ray powder diffraction results indicated that all the films annealed at 250 degrees C possessed a cubic structure, with crystallite sizes in the range of 1-130 nm. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated spherical nanoparticles with no significant changes with varying Mn 2+ doping concentrations. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the anticipated elements. The atomic force microscope revealed that the surface roughness has decreased with an increase in Mn 2+ ion concentrations but decreased for 0.7 %Mn 2+ . The UV-Vis absorption spectra showed absorption edges around 600-650 nm. Photoluminescence emission spectra excited at 3.8 eV (325 nm) showed emission bands at around 1.75 eV (709 nm), and 1.88 eV (659 nm), which were attributed to the band-to-band emission, and 4 T 1 ( 4 G)-> 6 A 1 ( 6 S) transitions of Mn 2+ ions, respectively, while emission bands at 2.35 eV (528 nm), and prominent at 3.17 eV (391 nm) were due to the glass substrate. The temperature-dependent luminescence showed a decrease in relative emission intensity with the increase in the operating temperature. The chromaticity colour coordinates showed white light-emitting thin films. These present findings open a new door to developing white light using CdSe thin films.
