Additively Manufactured Interdigital Filters for Ultra- Wideband Radar

Abstract— In this paper, we present the development of ultrawideband (UWB) inter-digital cavity filters manufactured with an additive technique. We employed a selective laser melting process with stainless steel via a “flipping and fixturing” approach to achieve dimensional accuracy and frequency selectivity (no postfabrication tuning) comparable to that of conventional micromachining. The filters operate at a center frequency of 3.75 GHz and 6 GHz, respectively, with an instantaneous bandwidth of 2 GHz. This paper presents design and fabrication details, a discussion of measured characteristics for both filters, and a performance comparison with respect to subtractively manufactured parts.

Control of the Folding Dynamics of Self-Reconfiguring Magnetic Microbots Using Liquid Crystallinity

Reconfigurable microdevices are being explored in a range of contexts where their life-like abilities to move and change shape are important. While much work has been done to control the motion of these microdevices by engineering their geometry and composition, little is known about their dynamics in complex fluid environments with non-Newtonian rheology. Here in this paper, it is shown how the actuation dynamics of reconfigurable microdevices made by assembly of patchy magnetic microcubes, which are referred to as “microbots,” can be modulated by their interactions with the anisotropic viscoelastic environment of a liquid crystal (LC). The free energy arising from the elastic strain of LC and formation of topological defects around the microbots influences their folding dynamics, which can be tuned by tailoring both the far-field orientation of the LC and the local ordering of the LC at the microbot surfaces. These findings represent a first step toward establishing a general set of design rules to control the dynamics of microbots using complex anisotropic fluids.

(abstract) A Broad-Band Microseismometer for Planetary Applications

There has recently been renewed interest in the development of instrumentation for making measurements on the surface of Mars. This is due to the Mars Environmental Survey (MESUR) Mission, for which approximately 16 small, long-lived (2 to 10 years), relatively inexpensive surface stations will be deployed in a planet-wide network. This will allow the investigation of processes (such as seismology and meteorology) which require the simultaneous measurement of phenomena at many widely spaced locations on the surface over a considerable length of time. Due to the large number of vehicles involved, the mass, power, and cost of the payload will be severely constrained. A seismometer has been identified as one of the highest priority instruments in the MESUR strawman payload.

Compact Submillimeter-Wave Receivers Made with Semiconductor Nano-Fabrication Technologies

Advanced semiconductor nanofabrication techniques are utilized to design, fabricate and demonstrate a super-compact, low-mass (<10 grams) submillimeter-wave heterodyne front-end. RF elements such as waveguides and channels are fabricated in a silicon wafer substrate using deep-reactive ion etching (DRIE). Etched patterns with sidewalls angles controlled with 1 deg precision are reported, while maintaining a surface roughness of better than 20 nm rms for the etched structures. This approach is being developed to build compact 2-D imaging arrays in the THz frequency range.

Development and Terrestrial Applications of a Nano-g Accelerometer

The ultra-sensitive accelerometer, developed for NASA to monitor the microgravity environments of Space Shuttle, free orbitors and Space Station, needed to measure accelerations up to 10mg with an absolute accuracy of 10 nano-g (10***sup-8***g) for at least two orbits (10***sup4*** seconds)to resolve accelerations associated with orbital drag.

NASA Ultra-Sensitive Miniature Accelerometer

Using micro-machined silicon technology, an ultra-sensitive miniature accelerometer can be constructed which meets the requirements for microgravity experiments in the space environment. Such an accelerometer will have a full scale sensitivity of 10 -2 g, a resolution of 10 -8 g, low cross-axis sensitivity, and low temperature sensitivity. Mass of the device is approximately five grams and its footprint is 2 cm x 2 cm.
