Longitudinal spin transfer to Λ hyperons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the CLAS12 spectrometer

The polarization of Λ hyperons is preserved in the angular distribution of their decay products. This property allows one to study the spin structure of the Λ. In semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering where a high energy lepton interacts with a nucleon target and one or more hadrons and the scattered lepton are detected in the final state, the probability for a struck quark to impart the polarization of the lepton to the Λ may be measured. In particular, in electron-proton scattering this quantity may be related to the longitudinal light quark polarization of the Λ. Currently, limited experimental data cannot discriminate between different models of Λ spin structure. This work reports on the measurement of the longitudinal spin transfer 𝐷$^{Λ}_{𝐿⁢𝐿′}$ to the Λ using data taken by the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab with a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. This measurement is the most precise to date, and, in comparison with theory predictions, it offers valuable insight into the relative dominance of current and target fragmentation in Λ production.

Search for ∆S = 2 nonleptonic hyperon decays Ω− → Σ0π− and Ω− → nK−

Abstract Using (27.12 ± 0.14) × 10 8 ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 3.686 GeV, we search for the first time for two nonleptonic hyperon decays that change strangeness by two units, Ω − → Σ 0 π − and Ω − →nK − . No significant signal is observed. The upper limits on their decay branching fractions are determined to be$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (Ω − → Σ 0 π − )<5.4 × 10 −4 and$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (Ω − →nK − )<2.4 × 10 −4 at the 90% confidence level.

Global Λ hyperon polarization in low-energy heavy ion collisions: A scenario without vorticity

Since its discovery, global polarization of the Λ hyperon in heavy-ion collisions has been firmly established and is widely attributed to the large vorticity generated in the rotating quark-gluon plasma. In contrast, nearly fifty years after the first observation of unexpectedly large transverse Λ polarization in unpolarized hadron collisions, its underlying mechanism remains an open and long-standing puzzle, despite being observed across a broad range of collision systems. Although these two phenomena exhibit notable similarities, they are generally regarded as arising from distinct physical origins. In this work, we propose a direct connection between Λ global polarization in heavy-ion collisions and the long-standing transverse polarization observed in unpolarized collision systems. We demonstrate that the alignment between the Λ production plane and the reaction plane, driven by directed flow, can transfer transverse polarization into the measured global polarization signal. Realistic Monte Carlo simulations of Au+Au collisions at √𝑠 NN =3 GeV indicate that this mechanism can generate a sizable global polarization, accounting for approximately 23% ±6% of the magnitude reported by the STAR Collaboration. Our results establish, for the first time, a quantitative link between these two well-known phenomena and have important implications for the interpretation of Λ global polarization measurements in low-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Event-by-event correlations between Λ ( Λ ¯ ) hyperon global polarization and handedness with charged hadron azimuthal separation in Au + Au collisions at s N N = 27 GeV from STAR

Global polarizations (P) of Λ (Λ¯) hyperons have been observed in non-central heavy-ion collisions. The strong magnetic field primarily created by the spectator protons in such collisions would split the Λ and Λ¯ global polarizations (ΔP=P Λ –P Λ ¯<0). Additionally, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts topological charge fluctuations in vacuum, resulting in a chirality imbalance or parity violation in a local domain. This would give rise to an imbalance (Δn = N L –N R /< N L +N R > ≠0) between left- and right-handed Λ (Λ¯) as well as a charge separation along the magnetic field, referred to as the chiral magnetic effect (CME). This charge separation can be characterized by the parity-even azimuthal correlator (Δγ) and parity-odd azimuthal harmonic observable (Δa 1 ). Measurements of ΔP, Δγ, and Δa 1 have not led to definitive conclusions concerning the CME or the magnetic field, and Δn has not been measured previously. Correlations among these observables may reveal new insights. Furthermore, this paper reports measurements of correlation between Δn and Δa 1 , which is sensitive to chirality fluctuations, and correlation between ΔP and Δγ sensitive to magnetic field in Au+Au collisions at 27 GeV. For both measurements, no correlations have been observed beyond statistical fluctuations.

Global polarization of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV

In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a global spin polarization, 𝑃 H , of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons along the direction of the system angular momentum was discovered and measured across a broad range of collision energies and demonstrated a trend of increasing 𝑃 H with decreasing $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. A splitting between Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ polarization may be possible due to their different magnetic moments in a late-stage magnetic field sustained by the quark-gluon plasma which is formed in the collision. The results presented in this study find no significant splitting at the collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV in the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions Beam Energy Scan Phase II using the STAR detector, with an upper limit of 𝑃 $\overline{Λ}$ – 𝑃 Λ < 0.24% and 𝑃 $\overline{Λ}$ – 𝑃 Λ < 0.35%, respectively, at a 95% confidence level. We derive an upper limit on the naive extraction of the late-stage magnetic field of 𝐵 < 9.4 × 10 12 T and 𝐵 < 1.4 × 10 13 T at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV, respectively, although more thorough derivations are needed. Differential measurements of 𝑃 H were performed with respect to collision centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity. With our current acceptance of |𝑦| < 1 and uncertainties, we observe no dependence on transverse momentum and rapidity in this analysis. Furthermore, these results challenge multiple existing model calculations following a variety of different assumptions which have each predicted a strong dependence on rapidity in this collision-energy range.

Electroproduction of the Λ/Σ 0 hyperons at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 at forward angles

In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nn⁢Λ state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022); B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data were also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Λ/Σ 0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q 2 ≃ 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 , W = 2.14 GeV, and θ$^{c.m.}_{γK}$ ≃ 8°. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data are scarce and a low-Q 2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q 2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Λ/Σ 0 hyperon electroproduction. Here, this paper reports on the Q 2 dependence of the differential cross section for the e + p → e' + K + + Λ/Σ 0 reaction at 0.2–0.8 (GeV/c) 2 , and provides comparisons with the currently available theoretical models.

Evidence for Two Excited Ω − Hyperons

Using e + e − collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19 fb − 1 collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.13 to 4.70 GeV, we report the first evidence for a new excited Ω − hyperon, the Ω ( 2109 ) − , through the process e + e − → Ω ( 2109 ) − Ω ¯ + + c . c . with a significance of 4.1 σ . The mass and width of Ω ( 2109 ) − are measured to be 2108.5 ± 5.2 stat ± 0.9 syst MeV / c 2 and 18.3 ± 16.4 stat ± 5.7 syst MeV , respectively. We also present evidence for a new production mechanism for the previously identified Ω ( 2012 ) − via the process e + e − → Ω ( 2012 ) − Ω ¯ + + c . c . with a significance of 3.5 σ . Beam-spin asymmetry Σ for Σ – hyperon photoproduction off the neutron

We report a new measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}$ for the $\vec{\gamma} n \rightarrow K^+\Sigma^-$ reaction using quasi-free neutrons in a liquid-deuterium target. The new dataset includes data at previously unmeasured photon energy and angular ranges, thereby providing new constraints on partial wave analyses used to extract properties of the excited nucleon states. The experimental data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), housed in Hall B of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The CLAS detector measured reaction products from a liquid-deuterium target produced by an energy-tagged, linearly polarised photon beam with energies in the range 1.1 to 2.3 GeV. Predictions from an isobar model indicate strong sensitivity to $N(1720)3/2^+$, $\Delta(1900)1/2^-$, and $N(1895)1/2^-$, with the latter being a state not considered in previous photoproduction analyses. When our data are incorporated in the fits of partial-wave analyses, one observes significant changes in $\gamma$-$n$ couplings of the resonances which have small branching ratios to the $\pi N$ channel.

Probing spin and lifetime correlations in entangled hyperon-antihyperon pairs

Quantum entanglement has now been demonstrated in several hadronic systems, revealing that non-classical spin correlations survive even through the strong-interaction hadronization process. To date, however, all studies have focused exclusively on angular observables, leaving the possibility untouched that quantum coherence might also influence the decay times of entangled partners. In this work we propose data-driven tests of spin-lifetime and lifetime-lifetime correlations for $Λ-\bar{Λ}$ pairs produced in high-energy collisions. By examining the opening-angle distribution in slices of $Δt$, constructing a pair-wise spin-lifetime correlator, and testing a simple lifetime-lifetime covariance, we search for deviations from independent exponential decay that align with known spin correlations. Observation of nonzero lifetime correlations would compel a reassessment of how entanglement manifests in decaying systems, revealing hitherto unexplored temporal coherence.

Normalizing flows for domain adaptation when identifying Λ hyperon events

Here this study focuses on the application of a normalizing flow as a method of domain adaptation when classifying physics data. Normalizing flows offer a way to transform data points between two different distributions. The present study investigates a novel method of transforming latent representations of physics data to a normal distribution and then to a physics distribution again. The final distribution models a simulated distribution. After being transformed, the data can be classified by a neural network trained on labeled simulation data. The present study succeeds in training two normalizing flows that can transform between data (or simulation) and a Gaussian distribution.

Photoproduction of the Σ + hyperon using linearly polarized photons with CLAS

Measurements of the polarization observables Σ, P, T, O x , O z for the reaction $\vec{γ}$ p → $K^0_S$Σ + using a linearly polarized photon beam of energy 1.1 to 2.1 GeV are reported. The measured data provide information on a channel that has not been studied extensively, but is required for a full coupled-channel analysis in the nucleon resonance region. Observables have been simultaneously extracted using likelihood sampling with a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo process. Angular distributions in bins of photon energy E γ are produced for each polarization observable. T, O x , and O z are first time measurements of these observables in this reaction. The extraction of Σ extends the energy range beyond a previous measurement. The measurement of P, the recoil polarization, is consistent with previous measurements. The measured data are shown to be significant enough to affect the estimation of the nucleon resonance parameters when fitted within a coupled-channels model.
