Hyperon global polarization in isobar Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200Ge V

The polarization of Λ, $\overline{Λ}$, $Ξ$ – , and $\overline{Ξ}$ + hyperons along the angular momentum of the system has been measured in isobar collisions of Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The polarization dependence on collision centrality exhibits an increasing trend in more peripheral collisions. Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ polarization dependence on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity have been investigated, but no significant dependence was observed. The polarizations of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ are found to be consistent with each other, indicating little contribution of the spin-magnetic coupling to the measured polarization. Comparison to previously measured polarization in Au+Au collisions show no obvious system size dependence. The results are qualitatively consistent with hydrodynamic calculations including contributions from shear-induced polarization and thermal vorticity. For the first time in heavy-ion collisions, the dependence of the global polarization on the hyperon’s emission azimuthal angle relative to the second-order event plane has been measured, indicating stronger polarization for the in-plane emitted hyperons at the level of 2.4 σ significance in 20–50 % centrality. The $Ξ$ hyperon polarization measurements via polarization transfer analysis yield finite positive values with 2.9 σ significance in 20–50 % centrality, slightly larger compared to the inclusive Λ polarization.

Measurement of transverse polarization of Λ and hyperons inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

A surprisingly large transverse polarization of Λ hyperons in unpolarized hadron-nucleon/nucleus collisions has been observed for 50 years, and the origin of this polarization remains an important open question. Recently, theoretical frameworks have advanced in describing this puzzle with the polarizing fragmentation function (PFF). We report the first measurement of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ transverse polarization inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions, which is directly attributed to the PFF. The polarization is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum, the fraction of the jet momentum carried by Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons, and the transverse momentum of Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons relative to the jet axis. Covering a wide jet-energy range, these data provide the first constraints on the gluon PFF and allow tests of TMD evolution and its universality.

Beam energy dependence of net-hyperon yield and its implication on baryon transport mechanism

In the constituent quark model, each quark inside a baryon carries 1/3 unit of the baryon number. An alternative picture exists where the center of a Y-shaped topology of gluon fields, called the baryon junction, carries a unit baryon number. Studying baryon transport over a large rapidity gap (δy) in nuclear collisions provides a possible tool to distinguish these two pictures. A recent analysis of global data on net-proton yield at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions showed an exponential dependence on δy and the exponential slope does not vary with event centrality, favoring the baryon junction picture. Since junctions are flavor blind, hyperons – baryons containing valence strange quarks – are expected to exhibit a similar behavior as the proton. This study aims to test this prediction by analyzing hyperon yields in Au+Au collisions at various energies. We observe that net-hyperon yields, after correcting for the strangeness production suppression, adhere to the expected exponential form. The extracted slope parameters for net-Λ, net-$Ξ$ and net-Ω are consistent with each other and with those of net-proton within uncertainties, and exhibit no centrality dependence. Various implementations of the PYTHIA event generator, primarily based on valence quarks for baryon transport, are unable to simultaneously describe the slope parameters for all baryons.

Measurement of the Λ hyperon lifetime

A new, more precise measurement of the Λ hyperon lifetime is performed using a large data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02 TeV with ALICE. The Λ and $\bar{Λ}$ hyperons are reconstructed at midrapidity using their two-body weak decay channel Λ→p+π - and $\bar{Λ}$→$\bar{p}$+π + . The measured value of the Λ lifetime is τ Λ =[261.07±0.37(stat.)±0.72(syst.)] ps. The relative difference between the lifetime of Λ and $\bar{Λ}$, which represents an important test of CPT invariance in the strangeness sector, is also measured. The obtained value (τ Λ -τ $\bar{Λ}$ )/τ Λ =0.0013±0.0028(stat.)±0.0021(syst.) is consistent with zero within the uncertainties. Both measurements of the Λ hyperon lifetime and of the relative difference between τ Λ and τ $\bar{Λ}$ are in agreement with the corresponding world averages of the Particle Data Group and about a factor of three more precise.

Longitudinal and transverse spin transfer to $Λ$ and $\overline{Λ}$ hyperons in polarized $p$ + $p$ collisions at √s = 200 GeV

The longitudinal and transverse spin transfers to Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons in polarized proton-proton collisions are expected to be sensitive to the helicity and transversity distributions, respectively, of (anti)strange quarks in the proton, and to the corresponding polarized fragmentation functions. We report improved measurements of the longitudinal spin transfer coefficient, D LL , and the transverse spin transfer coefficient, D TT , to Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ in polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The dataset includes longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 52 pb –1 , and transversely polarized proton-proton collisions with a similar integrated luminosity. Both datasets have about twice the statistics of previous results and cover a kinematic range of |η Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) | < 1.2 and transverse momentum p T , Λ($\overline{Λ}$) up to 8GeV/c. We also report the first measurements of the hyperon spin transfer coefficients D LL and D TT as a function of the fractional jet momentum z carried by the hyperon, which can provide more direct constraints on the polarized fragmentation functions

Rapid cooling of neutron stars by hyperons and Delta isobars

Direct Urca processes with hyperons and/or nucleon isobars can occur in dense matter as long as the concentration of Lambda hyperons exceeds a critical value that is less than 3 percent and is typically about 0.1 percent. The neutrino luminosities from the hyperon Urca processes are about 5-100 times less than the typical luminosity from the nucleon direct Urca process, if the latter process is not forbidden, but they are larger than those expected from other sources. These direct Urca processes provide avenues for rapid cooling of neutron stars which invoke neither exotic states nor the large proton fraction (of order 0.11-0.15) required for the nucleon direct Urca process.

New physics searches at kaon and hyperon factories

Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We identify new search strategies for under-explored signatures, and demonstrate that the improved sensitivities from current and next-generation experiments could lead to a qualitative leap in the exploration of light dark sectors.

Observation of Λ Hyperon Local Polarization in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The polarization of the Λ and $\bar{Λ}$ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured in proton-lead (𝑝-Pb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data were obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 186.0 ± 6.5 nb −1 . A significant azimuthal dependence of the hyperon polarization, characterized by the second-order Fourier sine coefficient 𝑃 𝑧,s⁢2 , is observed. The 𝑃 𝑧,s⁢2 values decrease as a function of charged particle multiplicity, but increase with transverse momentum. A hydrodynamic model that describes the observed 𝑃 𝑧,s⁢2 values in nucleus-nucleus collisions by introducing vorticity effects does not reproduce either the sign or the magnitude of the 𝑝-Pb results. These observations pose a challenge to the current theoretical implementation of spin polarization in heavy ion collisions and offer new insights into the origin of spin polarization in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Transverse polarization measurement of Λ hyperons in pNe collisions at $\sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 68.4 GeV with the LHCb detector

A measurement of the transverse polarization of the Λ and $\bar{Λ}$ hyperons in p Ne fixed-target collisions at $\sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 68.4 GeV is presented using data collected by the LHCb detector. The polarization is studied using the decay Λ → p $π$ − together with its charge conjugated process, the integrated values measured are $P_Λ = 0.029 ± 0.019$ (stat) $±$ $0.012$ (syst), $P_{\bar{Λ}} = 0.003 ± 0.023$ (stat) $±$ $0.014$ (syst). Furthermore, the results are shown as a function of the Feynman x variable, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity of the hyperons, and are compared with previous measurements.

Decay of the Λ(1405) hyperon to Σ 0 π 0 measured at GlueX

Among the light baryons, the J π = 1/2 - Λ(1405) hyperon is an important special case as it sits just below the $N\bar{K}$ threshold and decays almost exclusively to Σ π . Some long-standing hypotheses for Λ(1405) are that it could be a $N\bar{K}$ bound state or a Σ π continuum resonance. It may also be considered as a simple quark-model resonance, the P -wave companion of the Λ(1520). In recent years chiral unitary models have suggested that there are two isospin zero poles present in this mass region, and that the “line shape" of the Λ(1405) depends to what extent each of the two poles are stimulated in a given reaction. Below the $N\bar{K}$ threshold, the Λ(1405) decays to the three Σ π charge combinations. The Σ 0 π 0 mode is purely I = 0 and it is uncontaminated by complications arising from I = 1 scattering processes contributing to the reaction mechanism in the Σ + π - and Σ - π + decays. It is also not affected from production and decay of the nearby Σ 0 (1385) hyperon. The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been used to study the Λ(1405) → Σ 0 π 0 decay mode. We focus on the preliminary results of dσ/dM Σ 0 π 0 and fits to the line shape of the Λ(1405) region in the -( t - t min ) range 0 - 1.5 GeV 2 from analyzing the reaction γp → K + Λ * using the data collected during the first phase of the GlueX program.

Quarkyonic solution to the hyperon puzzle

We show that Quarkyonic Matter can mitigate the hyperon puzzle. The key observation is that the hyperon threshold is shifted to a higher density by a factor of constituent strange quark mass. We illustrate this effect by using the ideal dual Quarkyonic (IdylliQ) model with multiple flavors.

Deep exclusive meson production as a probe to the puzzle of Λ hyperon polarization

In the 1970s, an unexpected transverse Λ polarization in unpolarized proton-beryllium collisions was discovered, which initiated extensive studies on spin phenomena in high-energy physics. Over the past five decades, similar transverse Λ polarization has been observed across various collision systems, including lepton-hadron deep-inelastic scattering, hadron-hadron collisions, and electron-positron collisions. Despite numerous promising theoretical models, the fundamental mechanism underlying this polarization phenomenon remains inconclusive to this day. However, in both longitudinally and transversely polarized lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collisions, it is found that the Λ hyperon is polarized with respect to the initial parton spin direction. How the Λ hyperon acquires its spin has become one of the most crucial questions to address in order to resolve this puzzle. In this paper, I propose to use an exclusive process that can be measured at the Electron-Ion Collider, the deep exclusive meson production, to explicitly test the mechanism of Λ polarization. The outcomes of this experimental measurement are anticipated to unveil the dominant mechanism by which Λ obtains its spin, eliminating many of the ambiguities that have been encountered in previous studies. Finally, experimental challenges and requirements are discussed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Realtime dynamics of hyperon spin correlations from string fragmentation in a deformed four-flavor Schwinger model

Self-polarizing weak decays of Λ -hyperons provide unique insight into the role of entanglement in the fragmentation of QCD strings through measurements of the spin correlations of Λ Λ ¯ pairs produced in collider experiments. The simplest quantum field theory representing the underlying parton dynamics is the four-flavor massive Schwinger model plus an effective spin-flip term, where the flavors are mapped to light (up or down) and heavy (strange) quarks and their spins. This construction provides a novel way to explore hyperon spin correlations in 1 + 1 dimensions. We investigate the evolution of these correlations for different string configurations that are sensitive to the rich structure of the model Hamiltonian. Strong and Weak C P Tests in Sequential Decays of Polarized Σ 0 Hyperons

The J / ψ , ψ ( 3686 ) → Σ 0 Σ ¯ 0 processes and subsequent decays are studied using the world’s largest J / ψ and ψ ( 3686 ) data samples collected with the BESIII detector. The parity-violating decay parameters of the decays Σ 0 → Λ γ and Σ ¯ 0 → Λ ¯ γ , α Σ 0 = − 0.0017 ± 0.0021 ± 0.0018 and α ¯ Σ 0 = 0.0021 ± 0.0020 ± 0.0022 , are measured for the first time. The strong C P symmetry is tested in the decays of the Σ 0 hyperons for the first time by measuring the asymmetry A C P Σ = α Σ 0 + α ¯ Σ 0 = ( 0.4 ± 2.9 ± 1.3 ) × 10 − 3 . The weak C P test is performed in the subsequent decays of their daughter particles Λ and Λ ¯ . Also for the first time, the transverse polarizations of the Σ 0 hyperons in J / ψ and ψ ( 3686 ) decays are observed with opposite directions, and the ratios between the S -wave and D -wave contributions of the J / ψ , ψ ( 3686 ) → Σ 0 Σ ¯ 0 decays are obtained. These results are crucial to understand the decay dynamics of the charmonium states and the production mechanism of the Σ 0 − Σ ¯ 0 pairs. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Global polarization of hyperons and spin alignment of vector mesons in quark matters

Relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) as a dedicated nuclear facility has made a few major discoveries in physics. This year marks the 30th year STAR Collaboration formation and the 23th year of STAR detector operation and data collection at RHIC. In the last two decades, STAR has collected many datasets, exhibiting scientific versatility and flexibility of the RHIC facility. The total dataset in the first year is less than 1 million good events, and currently there are about 1 billion events per dataset. The Global Hyperon Polarization was proposed in 2004. This immediately prompted the STAR Collaboration to search for this phenomenon from the early datasets. The null results were presented at Quark Matter Conference in Shanghai in 2006 and subsequently published. Although there were peripheral and continuous efforts in the following decade, no positive result has been observed experimentally. This situation changed in the following decade with the upgrade of high data rate and time-of-flight (TOF) detector and the progress of the Beam Energy Scan Phase I (BES-I). The experimental discoveries of the global polarization of hyperons in 2017 and the spin alignment of vector mesons in 2023 at RHIC-STAR confirm the theory which was established nearly twenty years ago. The theory and these measurements open the way to studying the properties of the hot and dense nuclear matter created in high-energy heavy ion collisions from a new degree of freedom, spin. We briefly review these discoveries from the proposals of theory to the experimental measurements, and summarize the related measurements at the existing facilities and the theoretical explanations to the original proposal. The basic understanding and the original proposal are still valid and fundamental, that is, the angular momentum of system can transform into a spin effect observable in experiment. However, it appears that in each case a new model is needed to explain the new experimental observation. We need a more basic theory to help us unify all these spin related phenomena. Over the past five years, STAR has successfully installed 3 new detectors and we have begun to see the physical analysis results from datasets with those new functions. What makes the STAR detector viable after 20 years of operation is its continuous evolution through successful upgrades, with new scientific programs added year by year. The next big thing is to forward upgrade a tracking system (3 layers of silicon strips and 4 layers of sTGC chambers) and a calorimetry system (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters). In addition to studying the spin structure of protons by using the polarized proton beams at RHIC, the upgrades also provide a unique ability to investigate the origin of Λ Global Polarization as a function of rapidity and rapidity (de-)correlations in Au+Au collisions.

Domain-adversarial graph neural networks for Λ hyperon identification with CLAS12

Machine learning methods and in particular Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have revolutionized many tasks within the high energy physics community. Particularly in the realm of jet tagging, GNNs and domain adaptation have been especially successful. However, applications with lower energy events have not received as much attention. Here, we report on the novel use of GNNs and a domain-adversarial training method to identify Λ hyperon events with the CLAS12 experiment at Jefferson Lab. The GNN method we have developed increases the purity of the Λ yield by a factor of 1.95 and by 1.82 using the domain-adversarial training. This work also provides a good benchmark for developing event tagging machine learning methods for the Λ and other channels at CLAS12 and other experiments, such as the planned Electron Ion Collider.

Longitudinal spin transfer to Λ hyperons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the CLAS12 spectrometer

The polarization of Λ hyperons is preserved in the angular distribution of their decay products. This property allows one to study the spin structure of the Λ. In semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering where a high energy lepton interacts with a nucleon target and one or more hadrons and the scattered lepton are detected in the final state, the probability for a struck quark to impart the polarization of the lepton to the Λ may be measured. In particular, in electron-proton scattering this quantity may be related to the longitudinal light quark polarization of the Λ. Currently, limited experimental data cannot discriminate between different models of Λ spin structure. This work reports on the measurement of the longitudinal spin transfer 𝐷$^{Λ}_{𝐿⁢𝐿′}$ to the Λ using data taken by the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab with a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. This measurement is the most precise to date, and, in comparison with theory predictions, it offers valuable insight into the relative dominance of current and target fragmentation in Λ production.
