Switched electrical networks and bilinear equations

An investigation is conducted concerning the state equations which arise in the description of power processing systems. Attention is given to the role played by Lie groups and Lie algebras in the characterization of the dynamical features of the systems. The bilinear equations used for the representation of the network characteristics are discussed along with the nature of the solutions for the equations. The application of the described approaches is illustrated with the aid of a number of network examples.

Fused switch

An electric switch device is described which can be used safely even in an explosive environment. The switch has an operating arm, and a moveable actuator which is engaged by the arm and moved between a number of positions in which the arm opens or closes the switch. A fuse is slidably positioned in a passage through the actuator. The fuse can be replaced in the passage by another fuse when the actuator is in one of its many positions. The device is lightweight and compact, is capable of withstanding severe shock, and is not adversely affected by extremes of temperature.

Neutron effects on the electrical and switching characteristics of NPN bipolar power transistors

The use of nuclear reactors to generate electrical power for future space missions will require the electrical components used in the power conditioning, control, and transmission subsystem to operate in the associated radiation environments. An initial assessment of neutron irradiation on the electrical and switching characteristics of commercial high power NPN bipolar transistors was investigated. The results clearly show the detrimental effects caused by neutron irradiation on the electrical and switching characteristics of the NPN bipolar power transistor.

Controlling the helicity of light by electrical magnetization switching

Controlling the intensity of emitted light and charge current is the basis of transferring and processing information. By contrast, robust information storage and magnetic random-access memories are implemented using the spin of the carrier and the associated magnetization in ferromagnets. In this study, the missing link between the respective disciplines of photonics, electronics and spintronics is to modulate the circular polarization of the emitted light, rather than its intensity, by electrically controlled magnetization. Here we demonstrate that this missing link is established at room temperature and zero applied magnetic field in light-emitting diodes through the transfer of angular momentum between photons, electrons and ferromagnets. With spin-orbit torque a charge current generates also a spin current to electrically switch the magnetization. This switching determines the spin orientation of injected carriers into semiconductors, in which the transfer of angular momentum from the electron spin to photon controls the circular polarization of the emitted light. The spin-photon conversion with the nonvolatile control of magnetization opens paths to seamlessly integrate information transfer, processing and storage. Our results provide substantial advances towards electrically controlled ultrafast modulation of circular polarization and spin injection with magnetization dynamics for the next-generation information and communication technology, including space-light data transfer. The same operating principle in scaled-down structures or using two-dimensional materials will enable transformative opportunities for quantum information processing with spin-controlled single-photon sources, as well as for implementing spin-dependent time-resolved spectroscopies.

Electrically Controlled All-Antiferromagnetic Tunnel Junctions on Silicon with Large Room-Temperature Magnetoresistance

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials are a pathway to spintronic memory and computing devices with unprecedented speed, energy efficiency, and bit density. Realizing this potential requires AFM devices with simultaneous electrical writing and reading of information, which are also compatible with established silicon-based manufacturing. Recent experiments have shown tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) readout in epitaxial AFM tunnel junctions. However, these TMR structures are not grown using a silicon-compatible deposition process, and controlling their AFM order required external magnetic fields. Here are shown three-terminal AFM tunnel junctions based on the noncollinear antiferromagnet PtMn 3 , sputter-deposited on silicon. The devices simultaneously exhibit electrical switching using electric currents, and electrical readout by a large room-temperature TMR effect. First-principles calculations explain the TMR in terms of the momentum-resolved spin-dependent tunneling conduction in tunnel junctions with noncollinear AFM electrodes.

High-Temperature Switched-Reluctance Electric Motor

An eight-pole radial magnetic bearing has been modified into a switched-reluctance electric motor capable of operating at a speed as high as 8,000 rpm at a temperature as high as 1,000 F (=540 C). The motor (see figure) is an experimental prototype of starter-motor/generator units that have been proposed to be incorporated into advanced gas turbine engines and that could operate without need for lubrication or active cooling. The unique features of this motor are its electromagnet coils and, to some extent, its control software. Heretofore, there has been no commercial-off-the-shelf wire capable of satisfying all of the requirements for fabrication of electromagnet coils capable of operation at temperatures up to 1,000 F (=540 C). The issues addressed in the development of these electromagnet coils included thermal expansion, oxidation, pliability to small bend radii, micro-fretting, dielectric breakdown, tensile strength, potting compound, thermal conduction, and packing factor. For a test, the motor was supported, along with a rotor of 18 lb (.8-kg) mass, 3-in. (.7.6-cm) diameter, 21-in. (.53-cm) length, on bearings packed with high-temperature grease. The motor was located at the mid span of the rotor and wrapped with heaters. The motor stator was instrumented with thermocouples. At the time of reporting the information for this article, the motor had undergone 14 thermal cycles between room temperature and 1,000 F (.540 C) and had accumulated operating time >27.5 hours at 1,000 F (=540 C). The motor-controller hardware includes a personal computer equipped with analog-to-digital input and digital-to-analog output cards. The controller software is a C-language code that implements a switched-reluctance motor-control principle: that is, it causes the coils to be energized in a sequence timed to generate a rotating magnetic flux that creates a torque on a scalloped rotor. The controller can operate in an open- or closed-loop mode. In addition, the software has been modified to enable the simultaneous operation of the prototype motor or another, similar apparatus as both a motor and a magnetic bearing. Combined bearing/motor operation has been demonstrated at room temperature but had not yet been demonstrated at high temperature at the time of reporting the information for this article.

Advanced Electric Distribution, Switching, and Conversion Technology for Power Control

The Electrical Power Control Unit currently under development by Sundstrand Aerospace for use on the Fluids Combustion Facility of the International Space Station is the precursor of modular power distribution and conversion concepts for future spacecraft and aircraft applications. This unit combines modular current-limiting flexible remote power controllers and paralleled power converters into one package. Each unit includes three 1-kW, current-limiting power converter modules designed for a variable-ratio load sharing capability. The flexible remote power controllers can be used in parallel to match load requirements and can be programmed for an initial ON or OFF state on powerup. The unit contains an integral cold plate. The modularity and hybridization of the Electrical Power Control Unit sets the course for future spacecraft electrical power systems, both large and small. In such systems, the basic hybridized converter and flexible remote power controller building blocks could be configured to match power distribution and conversion capabilities to load requirements. In addition, the flexible remote power controllers could be configured in assemblies to feed multiple individual loads and could be used in parallel to meet the specific current requirements of each of those loads. Ultimately, the Electrical Power Control Unit design concept could evolve to a common switch module hybrid, or family of hybrids, for both converter and switchgear applications. By assembling hybrids of a common current rating and voltage class in parallel, researchers could readily adapt these units for multiple applications. The Electrical Power Control Unit concept has the potential to be scaled to larger and smaller ratings for both small and large spacecraft and for aircraft where high-power density, remote power controllers or power converters are required and a common replacement part is desired for multiples of a base current rating.

Respiratory analysis system and method

A system is described for monitoring the respiratory process in which the gas flow rate and the frequency of respiration and expiration cycles can be determined on a real time basis. A face mask is provided with one-way inlet and outlet valves where the gas flow is through independent flowmeters and through a mass spectrometer. The opening and closing of a valve operates an electrical switch, and the combination of the two switches produces a low frequency electrical signal of the respiratory inhalation and exhalation cycles. During the time a switch is operated, the corresponsing flowmeter produces electric pulses representative of the flow rate; the electrical pulses being at a higher frequency than that of the breathing cycle and combined with the low frequency signal. The high frequency pulses are supplied to conventional analyzer computer which also receives temperature and pressure inputs and computes mass flow rate and totalized mass flow of gas. From the mass spectrometer, components of the gas are separately computed as to flow rate. The electrical switches cause operation of up-down inputs of a reversible counter. The respective up and down cycles can be individually monitored and combined for various respiratory measurements.

Current-induced switching of thin film α - Fe 2 O 3 devices imaged using a scanning single-spin microscope

Electrical switching of Néel order in an antiferromagnetic insulator is desirable as a basis for memory applications. Unlike electrically driven switching of ferromagnetic order via spin-orbit torques, electrical switching of antiferromagnetic order remains poorly understood. Here we investigate the low-field magnetic properties of 30-nm-thick, c-axis-oriented α-Fe 2 ⁢O 3 Hall devices using a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center scanning microscope. Using the canted moment of α-Fe 2⁢ O 3 as a magnetic handle on its Néel vector, we apply a saturating in-plane magnetic field to create a known initial state before letting the state relax in low field for magnetic imaging. Here, we repeat this procedure for different in-plane orientations of the initialization field. We find that the magnetic field images are characterized by stronger magnetic textures for fields along [$\overline{11}$20] and 11$\overline{2}$0, suggesting that despite the expected 3-fold magnetocrystalline anisotropy, our α-Fe 2 ⁢O 3 thin films have an overall in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. We also study current-induced switching of the magnetic order in α-Fe 2 ⁢O 3 . We find that the fraction of the device that switches depends on the current pulse duration, amplitude, and direction relative to the initialization field.

High-Endurance Magneto-Electronic Switchable Molecular Electronic Crystal

Electrically switchable magnetic and electronic properties are promising for quantum sensing and information technology. Here, we report an electrically driven magnetic and electronic phase transition in molecular electronic crystal, potassium-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethan, with the magneto-electric switching over 105 cycles at room temperature. Electron spin resonance study reveals the cooperative transition between spin and charge degrees of freedom. In addition, the mechanistic spectroscopy studies suggest the charges in an inhomogeneous conductor–insulator mixed state. Furthermore, the findings shown here suggest electrically controlled ordering in strongly correlated molecular crystal leads to dynamic magneto-electric switching, paving the way for developing molecular-based memory and switching devices.

Electrical Control of Spin and Valley in Spin-Orbit Coupled Graphene Multilayers

Electrical control of magnetism has been a major technological pursuit of the spintronics community, owing to its far-reaching implications for data storage and transmission. Here, in this study, we propose and analyze a new mechanism for electrical switching of isospin, using chiral-stacked graphene multilayers, such as Bernal bilayer graphene or rhombohedral trilayer graphene, encapsulated by transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) substrates. Leveraging the proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling from the TMD, we demonstrate electrical switching of correlation-induced spin and/or valley polarization, by reversing a perpendicular displacement field or the chemical potential. We substantiate our proposal with both analytical arguments and self-consistent Hartree-Fock numerics. Finally, we illustrate how the relative alignment of the TMDs, together with the top and bottom gate voltages, can be used to selectively switch distinct isospin flavors, putting forward correlated Van der Waals heterostructures as a promising platform for spintronics and valleytronics.

Nonvolatile Ionic Two-Terminal Memory Device

Conceptual solid-state memory device nonvolatile and erasable and has only two terminals. Proposed device based on two effects: thermal phase transition and reversible intercalation of ions. Transfer of sodium ions between source of ions and electrical switching element increases or decreases electrical conductance of element, turning switch "on" or "off". Used in digital computers and neural-network computers. In neural networks, many small, densely packed switches function as erasable, nonvolatile synaptic elements.

High-power electrically tunable switch

A high-voltage switch, whose operation leverages the speed of electrons to generate the “on” time of the pulse in combination with the speed of light to generate the “off” time of the pulse, is described. In one example, the high-voltage switch includes a first electrode, a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode, a region of non-absorbing material occupying a portion of the space between the first and second electrodes and allowing a laser pulse to propagate therethrough without substantial absorption, and a region of absorbing material occupying another portion of the space and producing a charged particle cloud upon receiving the laser pulse. The high-voltage switch remains “on” upon the charged particle cloud reaching an electrode and until it has been collected by the electrode, and where the high-voltage switch remains “off” subsequent to the collection and until another generated charged particle cloud reaches the electrode.

Pure spin current phenomena

Spintronic phenomena and devices have evolved from exploiting spin-polarized current to pure spin current. A pure spin current can more efficiently deliver spin angular momentum with fewer or no charge carriers, enabling spin–orbit torque switching in ferromagnets. The prospects of antiferromagnetic spintronics, especially electrical switching, remain perplexing and controversial. Here, we describe some recent advances, outstanding issues, challenges, and prospects of pure spin current.
