Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 : Probing site mixing of the Ru 3 Sn 7 structure type with elements difficult to distinguish by diffraction

Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 was synthesized through arc-melting stoichiometric ratios of the elements, and a Ru 3 Sn 7 -type structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Because Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 contains Ga and Ge, which have very similar X-ray and neutron scattering factors, any Ga/Ge crystallographic site preference cannot be determined with diffraction alone. The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of using multiple techniques to characterize otherwise structurally ambiguous intermetallic compounds. Here, we utilize 71 Ga nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and an analysis of the X-ray absorption fine structure to clarify the amount of Ga/Ge site mixing. Our combined use of X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy provides a comprehensive structural analysis of Ga site mixing across the Ge crystallographic sites, enhancing the understanding of the structure and properties of Co 3 Ga 2 Ge 5 .

Triplet Excitons in Pentacene Are Intrinsically Difficult to Dissociate via Charge Transfer

Singlet fission (SF) has the potential to bypass the Shockley–Queisser limit for solar cell efficiency through the production of two electron–hole pairs per photon. However, in polycrystalline pentacene this goal is hindered by slow charge transfer from triplets (=10 7 s –1 ) after SF. In this paper we demonstrate that slow charge transfer is an intrinsic property of triplet states in this material and most likely not connected with the triplet pair states that may result from singlet fission. We compare two perylene diimide/pentacene charge transfer systems that differ only by triplet generation mechanism: SF versus intersystem crossing (ISC), sensitized by using a soluble lead phthalocyanine derivative. We use time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) to measure the charge yield in each system and transient absorption (TA) to follow the triplet population dynamics. These experiments are described by a single global kinetic model, with most of its parameters fixed via control experiments. While we observe modest differences in the charge-transfer rate constants between each sample, 4–10× as a function of triplet generation mechanism, all samples remain far below the predicted diffusion-limited rate constant of 10 7 –10 8 s –1 .

In search of molecular ions for optical cycling: a difficult road

Optical cycling, a continuous photon scattering off atoms or molecules, plays a central role in the quantum information science. While optical cycling has been experimentally achieved for many neutral species, few molecular ions have been investigated. We present a systematic theoretical search for diatomic molecular ions suitable for optical cycling using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods. Inspired by the electronic structure patterns of laser-cooled neutral molecules, we establish the design principles for molecular ions and explore various possible cationic molecular frameworks. The results show that finding a perfect molecular ion for optical cycling is challenging, yet possible. Among various possible diatomic molecules we suggest several candidates, which require further attention from both theory and experiment: YF + , SiO + , PN + , SiBr + , and BO + .

Alignment of the magnetic field in star-forming regions and why it might be difficult to observe

ABSTRACT Magnetic fields are an important component of the interstellar medium (ISM) and exhibit strongly varying field strengths and a non-trivial correlation with the gas density. Its dynamical impact varies between individual regions of the ISM and correlates with the orientation of the field with respect to the gas structures. Using high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of the ISM, we explore the connection between the orientation of the field and the dynamical state of the gas. We find that the onset of gravitational instability in molecular gas above a density of $\rho \sim 10^{-21}\, \mathrm{g\, cm}^{-3}$$(n\sim 400\, \mathrm{cm}^{-3})$ coincides with an alignment of the magnetic field lines and the gas flow. At this transition, the gradient of the density changes from mainly perpendicular to preferentially parallel to the field lines. A connection between the three-dimensional alignment and projected two-dimensional observables is non-trivial, because of a large dispersion of the magnetic field orientation along the line of sight. The turbulent correlation lengths can be small compared to the typical integration lengths. As a consequence, the small-scale signal of the orientation can sensitively depend on the line of sight or the dynamical state of the cloud can fluctuate stochastically or be completely averaged out. With higher spatial resolution more small-scale structures are resolved, which aggravates the link between magneto-hydrodynamical quantities and projected observables.

Improved reinforcement for openings in difficult fabrics

Plastic film is applied to each side of the fabric and the two films are then fused together with conventional heat-sealing equipment. With the inner area of the fabric cut away, a flexible, sturdy band of material is left around the opening with no raw edges.

Electrons at low altitudes: A difficult background problem for soft X-ray astronomy

Quasi-trapped and precipitating electrons have been observed with rocket-borne X-ray astronomy detectors in the altitude range 150 to 500 km. Because the flights occured at low magnetic latitudes the electrons were unexpected. Data from many flights are combined to derive altitude dependence, an average electron spectrum, and variation with solar activity. Development of electron-rejecting collimators is discussed, and laboratory and flight data on these collimators are presented.

Plasma Spray for Difficult-To-Braze Alloys

Nickel plating on surfaces makes brazing easier for some alloys. Sometimes nickel plating may not be feasible because of manufacturing sequence, size of hardware, or lack of suitable source for nickel plating. Alternative surface preparation in such cases is to grit-blast surface lightly and then plasma-spray 1 1/2 to 2 mils of fine nickel powder or braze-alloy material directly on surface. Powder is sprayed from plasma gun, using argon as carrier gas to prevent oxidation of nickel or braze alloy.

Candidate galaxies for study of the local velocity field and distance scale using Space Telescope. I - The most easily resolved. II - The more difficult cases. III - Galaxies in the Virgo cluster core

A subset of 1246 Shapley-Ames galaxies is presented which holds promise for some degree of useful resolution by the Space Telescope. The 95 candidate galaxies easiest to resolve are described and illustrated first. Many of these can be readily resolved into brightest stars from the ground with presently available telescopes at a few sites, while others might be resolved from the ground into at least the brightest blue supergiants. Then, 152 additional candidates are presented which can only be adequately studied with the Space Telescope. Finally, the most promising galaxies for studies of the resolved stellar content that occur in the central six degree core of the Virgo cluster are given. These are expected to be useful for any direct attack on the distance to the cluster itself.

FONO - A difficult case for theory and experiment

High levels of ab initio theory are used to investigate the equilibrium structures, vibrational spectra, and relative energetics of FNO2, cis-FONO, and trans-FONO isomers. FNO2 is determined to be 36.9 +/- 2.5 kcal/mol (0 K) more stable than cis-FONO, which is more stable than trans-FONO by 2.5 +/- 1.0 kcal/mol (0 K). The molecular structure of cis-FONO is shown to have typical F-O and central O-N single bond distances, indicating that cis-FONO has a structure analogous to HONO. The computed vibrational spectrum of cis-FONO is shown to be consistent with IR matrix isolation experiments, including isotopic shifts. The experimentally deduced structure of FONO is shown to be incorrect because one of the vibrational bands included in the normal coordinate analysis is either a combination band or an overtone.

Fusion proteins as alternate crystallization paths to difficult structure problems

The three-dimensional structure of a peptide fusion product with glutathione transferase from Schistosoma japonicum (SjGST) has been solved by crystallographic methods to 2.5 A resolution. Peptides or proteins can be fused to SjGST and expressed in a plasmid for rapid synthesis in Escherichia coli. Fusion proteins created by this commercial method can be purified rapidly by chromatography on immobilized glutathione. The potential utility of using SjGST fusion proteins as alternate paths to the crystallization and structure determination of proteins is demonstrated.

The Difficult Road to Mars: A Brief History of Mars Exploration in the Soviet Union

Perminov was the leading designer for Mars and Venus spacecraft at the Soviet Lavochkin design bureau in the early days of Martian exploration. In addition to competing with the U.S. to get to the Moon, the Soviets also struggled to beat the U.S. to Mars during the Cold War. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Soviets attempted to send a number of robotic probes to Mars, but for a variety of reasons, most of these missions ended in failure. Despite these overall failures, the Soviets garnered a great deal of scientific and technical knowledge through these efforts. This monograph tells some fascinating, but little-known, stories.

How Difficult is it to Add 1? A Pedagogical Example of How Theory of Computing May be Useful

We show that while adding two generic b-bit integers requires = b bit operations, adding 1 to an integer requires, on average, only 2 bit operations. This fact explains why the operation of adding 1 is often separately hardware supported, and why this operation is often separately described in high-level programming languages like C++. This result shows that theoretical analysis can help in deciding which operations must be hardware supported, and thus, hopefully, will help in designing faster computers.
