Push-pull converter with energy saving circuit for protecting switching transistors from peak power stress

In a push-pull converter, switching transistors are protected from peak power stresses by a separate snubber circuit in parallel with each comprising a capacitor and an inductor in series, and a diode in parallel with the inductor. The diode is connected to conduct current of the same polarity as the base-emitter juction of the transistor so that energy stored in the capacitor while the transistor is switched off, to protect it against peak power stress, discharges through the inductor when the transistor is turned on, and after the capacitor is discharges through the diode. To return this energy to the power supply, or to utilize this energy in some external circuit, the inductor may be replaced by a transformer having its secondary winding connected to the power supply or to the external circuit.

Novel Electrochemical Technique: Serial Open Circuit Potentiometry to Examine the Separability of Lanthanides in Molten Salts

The accumulation of lanthanide fission products in molten salts reduces the efficiency of pyroprocessing used nuclear fuel. Lanthanide fission products are notoriously difficult to separate due to their similar physical and electrical properties. We developed a novel electrochemical technique called serial open circuit potentiometry (SOCP) which allows us to delineate between metal deposition reactions with similar reduction potentials to great precision. SOCP has several advantages over traditional open circuit potentiometry including its ability to create 3D plots that describe all metal deposition reactions in a system. This information can be used to precisely determine equilibrium potentials of metal deposition reactions and quantify their error, determine nucleation potentials, and determine the nucleation and growth mechanism. In this work, we demonstrated the effectiveness of SOCP by studying molten salt mixtures containing CeCl3, GdCl3, and both CeCl3 and GdCl3 in LiCl-KCl eutectic.

Novel High-Voltage, High-Power Piezoelectric Transformer Developed and Demonstrated for Space Communications Applications

Improvements in individual piezoelectric transformer (PT) performance and the combination of these PTs in a unique modular topology under a Phase I contract with the NASA Glenn Research Center have enabled for the first time the simultaneous achievement of both high voltage and high power at much higher levels than previously obtained with any PT. Feasibility was demonstrated by a prototype transformer (called a Tap-Soner), which is shown in the preceding photograph as part of a direct-current to direct-current (dc-dc) converter having two outputs rated at 1.5 kV/5 W and 4.5 kV/20 W. The power density of 3.5 W/cm3 is significantly lower than for magnetic transformers with the same voltage and power output. This development, which is being done under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by Face Electronics, LC (Norfolk, VA), is based on improvements in the materials and design of Face's basic patented Transoner-T3 PT, shown in the left in the following figure. The T3 PT is most simply described as a resonant multilayer transducer where electrical energy at the input section is efficiently mechanically coupled to the output section, which then vibrates in a fundamental longitudinal mode to generate a high gain in voltage. The piezoelectric material used is a modified lead-zirconium-titanate-based ceramic. One of the significant improvements in PT design was the incorporation of a symmetrical double input layer, shown on the right in the following figure, which eliminated the lossy bending vibration modes characteristic of a single input layer. The performance of the improved PT was optimized to 1.5 kV/5 W. The next step was devising a way to combine the individual PTs in a modular circuit topology needed to achieve the desired high voltage and power output. Since the optimum performance of the individual PT occurs at resonance, the most efficient operation of the modular transformer was achieved by using a separate drive circuit for each PT. The output section consists of a separate output rectifier for each PT connected in series.

Optimized low-depth quantum circuits for molecular electronic structure using a separable-pair approximation

We present a classically tractable model that leads to optimized low-depth quantum circuits leveraging separable-pair approximations. The obtained circuits are well suited as a baseline circuit for emerging quantum hardware and can, in the long term, provide significantly improved initial states for quantum algorithms. The associated wave functions can be represented with linear memory requirement, which allows classical optimization of the circuits and naturally defines a minimum benchmark for quantum algorithms. In this work we employ directly determined pair-natural orbitals within a basis-set-free approach. This leads to accurate representation of the one- and many-body parts for weakly correlated systems and we explicitly illustrate how the model can be integrated into other quantum algorithms for stronger correlated systems.

Window comparator

A window comparator is described, comprising two operational amplifiers, one with two feedback circuits, each feedback circuit having a diode connected to the amplifier output and poled for forward current conduction of opposite polarity, to provide an algebraic difference between an input signal and a selected set-point voltage. Differential input terminals of the second operational amplifier were connected to the separate feedback circuits of the first operational amplifier, one input terminal to the output of one diode, and the other to the output of the other diode. A selected window-width voltage was connected through a coupling resistor to one of the input terminals of the second operational amplifier to determine when the algebraic difference of the input signal and the setpoint voltage has exceeded a predetermined tolerance after that difference has changed signs.

The utility of Bayesian data reconciliation for separations

Data reconciliation methods for separation processes typically rely on classical statistical approaches to generate estimates of true mass flow rates from measurements. Knowledge regarding the uncertainty of these estimates has value in decision making, but is often not acquired. Bayesian approaches intrinsically quantify uncertainty; however, literature for Bayesian data reconciliation of separation processes is scarce. This publication outlines two Bayesian data reconciliation models and provides details for how the models were implemented for the BayesMassBal (V 1.0.0) software package written in R. To demonstrate the advantages of this approach for data reconciliation, the models were first applied to simulated data and then compared to a classical model through a Monte Carlo experiment. In this example, the Bayesian models were found to provide more accurate estimates of the simulated data, while also providing quantitative information on the estimate uncertainty. To demonstrate the use of the technique in a practical problem, the models were also applied to real data collected from a pilot-scale rare earth solvent extraction process. Here, this publication provides a small window into how Bayesian methods can be used for data reconciliation, but findings suggest Bayesian data reconciliation models for separation processes have distinct advantages over classical alternatives.

Ion Traps and Packaging for Heterogenous Integration - Chimera

Microfabricated surface ion traps and silicon-based photonics are critical technologies for scaling quantum systems. Current ion trap architectures face scalability and integration challenges due to limitations in optical access, fabrication techniques, and material compatibility. State-of-the-art quantum computers and atomic clocks are investigating monolithic integration, which necessitates custom traps for each ion species and has not overcome the integration hurdles presented by merging these technologies. The Chimera (Ion Traps and Packaging for Heterogeneous Integration) project proposes a novel approach utilizing heterogeneous integration (HI) of ion traps and photonic circuits. This separation of components allows for flexibility in ion trap design and reduces fabrication compromises. The Chimera project specifically designed an ion trap to interface vertically with a separately fabricated waveguide chip and demonstrates the first steps to integrating them at the packaging level. The ion trap features a large area of removed silicon, allowing the photonics chip outputs closer to the ion trap, improving alignment and packaging processes. The alignment must be accurate to < 1 µm to ensure that the light from the waveguide can overlap with the trapping region. This fine alignment must also be maintained through an ultra-high vacuum bake, a critical step in preparing an ion trap experiment. By combining separate chips, we demonstrate a new path for scaling trapped ion technology that is less reliant on monolithic integration. We successfully fabricated a trap with a large area of oxide removed, resulting in a region thinned to about 40 µm, a key milestone toward successful integration.

Acoustical Detection Of Leakage In A Combustor

Abnormal combustion excites characteristic standing wave. Acoustical leak-detection system gives early warning of failure, enabling operating personnel to stop combustion process and repair spray bar before leak grows large enough to cause damage. Applicable to engines, gas turbines, furnaces, and other machines in which acoustic emissions at known frequencies signify onset of damage. Bearings in rotating machines monitored for emergence of characteristic frequencies shown in previous tests associated with incipient failure. Also possible to monitor for signs of trouble at multiple frequencies by feeding output of transducer simultaneously to multiple band-pass filters and associated circuitry, including separate trigger circuit set to appropriate level for each frequency.

HSCT Sector Combustor Hardware Modifications for Improved Combustor Design

An alternative to the stepped-dome design for the lean premixed prevaporized (LPP) combustor has been developed. The new design uses the same premixer types as the stepped-dome design: integrated mixer flameholder (IMFH) tubes and a cyclone swirler pilot. The IMFH fuel system has been taken to a new level of development. Although the IMFH fuel system design developed in this Task is not intended to be engine-like hardware, it does have certain characteristics of engine hardware, including separate fuel circuits for each of the fuel stages. The four main stage fuel circuits are integrated into a single system which can be withdrawn from the combustor as a unit. Additionally, two new types of liner cooling have been designed. The resulting lean blowout data was found to correlate well with the Lefebvre parameter. As expected, CO and unburned hydrocarbons emissions were shown to have an approximately linear relationship, even though some scatter was present in the data, and the CO versus flame temperature data showed the typical cupped shape. Finally, the NOx emissions data was shown to agree well with a previously developed correlation based on emissions data from Configuration 3 tests performed at GEAE. The design variations of the cyclone swirler pilot that were investigated in this study did not significantly change the NOx emissions from the baseline design (GEAE Configuration 3) at supersonic cruise conditions.

System and method for large-scale PCB production including continuous selective adhesion

A method for the large-scale production of PCBs including a continuous selective adhesion process for creating printed circuit traces providing input to a production line. A roll of printed circuit traces is produced using rolls of flexible substrate, conductive layer, and conductive layer support by applying adhesive between the rolls of flexible substrate and conductive layer, bringing the rolls together, transferring a circuit pattern onto the flexible substrate, curing the adhesive through non-opaque areas of the circuit pattern, and separating the non-bonded areas. The resulting printed circuit traces are applied from the roll to mounts, and circuit components are applied from a roll to the traces as the mounts move along the line. Additional rolls of printed circuit traces and circuit components may be incorporated, and multi-layer PCBs may be produced. As part of the production line, the finished PCBs may be applied to flat or contoured products.

Estimation of process steady state with autoregressive models and Bayesian inference

To improve efficiency, separations engineers will typically design process circuits containing recirculating streams, which mix one or more of the process outputs with the feed material. Doing so can improve efficiency, but will cause a delay in the system reaching steady state conditions until the recirculating load mass flows stabilize. In testing separation circuits, engineers will often test a variety of factors and complete an analysis from sample results. Knowledge of if a process is at steady state, as well as the steady state conditions of a process, is essential for a valid techno-economic analysis. However, the definition of process steady state is often poorly defined, or does not include uncertainty quantification. If the performance of a process operating under two different sets of conditions are compared, an engineer who does not test for steady state or quantify steady state conditions risks producing a faulty analysis. In this work, a Bayesian statistical method for testing if all streams are at steady state is further motivated and then derived. Then after testing for steady state, the same model is used with a prior distribution that enforces a steady state assumption to estimate steady state conditions. Further, these methods were validated in a solvent extraction pilot plant where steady state conditions for all outflows were inferred with uncertainty quantification. Analysis is completed with functions available to the reader as part of the BayesMassBal (V 1.1.0) software package written in R.

Research on variable threshold transistor storage systems

A fully integrated, electrically alterable, nonvolatile, nondestructive readout control memory was developed, using as storage elements metal-nitride-silicon variable threshold transistors. An optimum approach to such a memory was developed in which a three dimensional selection technique was used, both for read and write operations. Electrical isolation of writing and memory circuits was obtained by means of separate memory and write circuit chips. This method provided protection from voltage breakdowns, increased circuit flexibility, and greater ease of testing of interim and final circuit elements.
