Milestones Achieved for the Fluids and Combustion Facility

In 2004, President Bush outlined a new space exploration vision for NASA. The exploration programs will seek profound answers to questions of our origins, whether life exists beyond Earth, and how we could live in other worlds. In response, research projects from NASA s Fluid Physics Research Program were moved into the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate and realigned to support the major milestones of this directorate. A new goal of this research is to obtain an understanding of the physical phenomena that are important in the design of the many space-based and ground-based fluids systems that utilize multiphase flow, such as life support, propulsion, and power systems.

Milestone in predicting core plasma turbulence: successful multi-channel validation of the gyrokinetic code GENE

On the basis of several recent breakthroughs in fusion research, many activities have been launched around the world to develop fusion power plants on the fastest possible time scale. In this context, high-fidelity simulations of the plasma behavior on large supercomputers provide one of the main pathways to accelerating progress by guiding crucial design decisions. When it comes to determining the energy confinement time of a magnetic confinement fusion device, which is a key quantity of interest, gyrokinetic turbulence simulations are considered the approach of choice – but the question, whether they are really able to reliably predict the plasma behavior is still open. The present study addresses this important issue by means of careful comparisons between state-of-the-art gyrokinetic turbulence simulations with the GENE code and experimental observations in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak for an unprecedented number of simultaneous plasma observables.

Data sharing helps avoid “smoking gun” claims of topological milestones

Manipulating the topology of electronic bands can realize new states of matter, with possible implications for information technology. A central question is how to tell whether a topological regime has been achieved. Experiments are often guided by a prediction of a distinct and self-explanatory signal called “the smoking gun.” However, in micrometer- or nanometer-scale specimens, phenomenology can mimic the anticipated behavior without containing the exotic states. We show limited data that are consistent with the presence of four topological phenomena; by considering additional data, we identified the most likely origins of the observed patterns as trivial. Finally, we argue that the reliability of smoking gun–type claims can be greatly enhanced by releasing comprehensive datasets, discussing alternative scenarios, and disclosing the total volume of study.

Milestone 49 Report: Batched Sparse LA Phase 5 Implementation

Batched sparse linear algebra operations in general, and solvers in particular, have become the major algorithmic development activity and foremost performance engineering effort in the numerical software libraries work on modern hardware with accelerators such as GPUs. Many applications, ECP and non-ECP alike, require simultaneous solutions of many small linear systems of equations that are structurally sparse in one form or another. In order to move towards high hardware utilization levels, it is important to provide these applications with appropriate interface designs to be both functionally efficient and performance portable and give full access to the appropriate batched sparse solvers running on modern hardware accelerators prevalent across DOE supercomputing sites since the inception of ECP. To this end, we present here a summary of recent advances on the interface designs in use by HPC software libraries supporting batched sparse linear algebra and the development of sparse batched kernel codes for solvers and preconditioners. We also address the potential interoperability opportunities to keep the corresponding software portable between the major hardware accelerators from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, while maintaining the appropriate disclosure levels conforming to the active NDA agreements. The presented interface specifications include a mix of batched band, sparse iterative, and sparse direct solvers with their accompanying functionality that is already required by the application codes or we anticipated to be needed in the near future. This report summarizes progress in Kokkos Kernels and the xSDK libraries MAGMA, Ginkgo, hypre, PETSc, and SuperLU.

Continued performance improvement and integration of MOOSE's thermal-hydraulics capabilities (M3 Milestone Report)

This work introduces performance, robustness and workflow improvements to Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE)-based thermal-hydraulics solvers. It presents work related to the acceleration of segregated fluid dynamics algorithms, which show approximately a factor of 10 speedup compared to the preceding implementation. Additionally, we discuss approaches to use advanced, Schurr complement-based, field split preconditioners for monolithic solution algorithms relying on the finite volume method. The presence of the Rhie-Chow interpolation makes the utilization of this preconditioner challenging, but the results indicate that for a moderately large problem a factor of 3.4 speedup can be achieved in conjunction with a factor of 3.5 reduction in memory usage. Furthermore, we introduce several pseudo-time stepping approaches to MOOSE for the robust convergence to steady-state solutions when steady-state solves don't converge due to the initial guesses being too far from the solution in Newton's method. Every MOOSE-based application has access this algorithm and can benefit from its use. Moreover, several new avenues have been presented for importing meshes from commercial software which make meshing easier. Lastly, the Component system within the Thermal-Hydraulics Module (THM) of MOOSE is abstracted by separating geometry- and physics-related properties.

LLNL FY24 Aging and Lifetimes Exit Criteria: Milestone 9134, GC#2, EC#2

Surface chemistry of uranium from gases in the ambient atmosphere of the application environment presents significant challenges due to the high degree of reactivity of the substrate and the ubiquity of these gases in experimental setups. Relatively little is known about the chemical mechanism and reaction rates for the catalytic dissociation of atmospheric gases on solid plutonium or uranium as well as the degradation process to form the metal hydride. Experimental studies and age-aware modeling efforts would greatly benefit from detailed atomistic knowledge of the chemical reactivity in these materials.

Level 2 Milestone: Develop and Incorporate Novel Code Verification of Fundamental Equations in Gemma and Set Up Appropriate Tests

For computational physics simulations, code verification plays a major role in establishing the credibility of the results by assessing the correctness of the implementation of the underlying numerical methods. In computational electromagnetics, surface integral equations, such as the method-of-moments implementations of the electric-, magnetic-, and combinedfield integral equations, are frequently used to solve Maxwell’s equations on the surfaces of electromagnetic scatterers. These electromagnetic surface integral equations yield many code-verification challenges due to the various sources of numerical error and their possible interactions. In this report, we provide approaches to separately measure the numerical errors arising from these different error sources. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches in Gemma.

2024 Milestone Report: Site 300 mPDV Optical Fiducials

In the early 2000s Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) replaced the Fabry-Perot many beam system1 and has since become ubiquitous across dynamic experimental platforms to measure velocity and event times such as shock breakout, key variables for high pressure physics research. The advent of optically multiplexed oscilloscope channels to create multiplexed PDV (mPDV) increased portability and reduced price per data point. However, these advantages came with the cost of additional fielding complexity and thermally induced timing drift, which directly affects the ability to use PDV for high precision time measurement. Controlling the temperature or incorporating optical fiducials allows researchers to characterize, reduce, and correct this thermal drift in analysis. Our implemented optical fiducial or “timing marker” allows us to reduce thermal drift uncertainty from the 10s of nanoseconds down to the 100s of picoseconds with minimal added complexity to existing systems. The implementation of this timing marker normalizes uncertainty across optical delays, brings our facility cross timing into the sub nanosecond regime and lets us identify/study anomalies in our data. This improvement increases experiment reliability and quality enabling a new class of high precision experiments at S300.

New charged-particle transport computational capability: the SIT code An L-4 milestone

We have developed a new high-fidelity code for direct transport of charged particles using the simple integral transport method. The code can be coupled to the outputs of any hydrodynamical simulation code in 1-D, 2-D or 3-D. In this report we summarize the formalism involved in treating complex transport problems. We present physical examples wherein we have used the code to calculate the transport of alpha particles. Future work is planned to study the sensitivity of hydrodynamical mix to charged-particle radiochemistry and reaction-in-flight neutrons for the complex inertial confinement fusion problems encountered at NIF and at the Z-machine.

Completion of Level 2 FY25 milestone #9193

Future laser facilities, such as the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Enhanced Yield Capability (EYC) upgrade, or entirely new facilities (often referred to as a “Next Generation” laser facilities), will drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) targets with higher laser energies and total laser drive powers than those currently accessible at the NIF. One of the primary concerns is the loss of driver energy or symmetry control due to unwanted laser-plasma interactions (LPIs) that can backscatter, divert, or otherwise redistribute laser drive in a deleterious manner, or pre-heat the capsule ablator or fuel through the generation of hot electrons.

Optimizing Alabama’s CO 2 Storage in Shelby County (Project OASIS) Milestone 6.0: Evaluation of Class VI Readiness

Introduction. Project OASIS is approximately 30 miles southeast of Birmingham, Alabama, and approximately 5 miles north-northwest of Alabama Power Company's Plant Gaston. Geologically, the Project area is in the Alabama fold and thrust belt province. This work builds on the initiatives of the Southeast Regional Carbon Utilization and Storage Acceleration Partnership (SECARB-USA, DE-FE0031830) that identified nearly 500 million metric tonnes of CO 2 emitted on an annual basis that is not collocated with prospective storage geology (the Coastal Plain of the Southeastern US in this context). This observation suggests costly investments in connective infrastructure (e.g., pipelines) or exploratory well drilling campaigns to identify CO 2 storage opportunities in under explored areas. While not traditionally thought of for saline storage, these studies suggest that storage prospects in the Valley and Ridge Province occur in relatively flat lying structural panels between thrust faults. For the Project OASIS region, available geologic studies related to hydrocarbon exploration suggest that Cambro-Ordovician carbonates and Cambrian clastic units offer multiple potential storage intervals, and that regional confining systems are present, such as the tectonically thickened Floyd-Parkwood Shale. The Project OASIS surface property is owned by a timber and land stewardship company, The Westervelt Company, Inc., who worked with the Project Team to select and prepare adequate sites for geologic assessment. The purpose of drilling the Westover Stratigraphic Test Well #2 was to collect geologic data to model the feasibility of commercial scale CO 2 injection and storage in an under explored region. This initiative benefits the regions emitters as the data generated from this study can inform their own internal decision making. The field program included geological and geophysical evaluations, reservoir engineering analyses, and risk assessments. This report evaluates existing data, as well as a variety of modeling scenarios to evaluate project readiness. Importantly, the impact of this study is not limited to Alabama as there are numerous large emitters throughout Appalachia, in similar geologic settings, contemplating their decarbonization options.
