Harmonic suppression gratings for soft X-ray monochromators

We describe an approach to harmonic suppression in soft X-ray monochromators by engineering the reflection grating’s diffraction pattern to approximate a sinusoidal amplitude. At synchrotron and free-electron laser sources, X-ray beamlines powered by insertion devices produce a spectrum containing harmonic photon energies that can couple unwanted light into experiments. Beamlines in the soft X-ray energy range (100 eV to 2 keV) commonly employ energy-filtering elements to suppress these harmonics. Available approaches tend to be inefficient, significantly reducing the transmitted power. We show that with pseudo-grayscale binary halftone patterns, gratings can approximate a sinusoidal amplitude and suppress higher diffraction orders. Prototype demonstrations of lithographically fabricated gratings were conducted on a soft X-ray beamline with photon energies of 110 eV and 330 eV. Relative to a square-wave amplitude grating, the third-harmonic intensity was reduced by a factor of 9.0 with a first-order efficiency reduction of 38%.

Monochromation of pulsed electron beams with terahertz radiation at a planar mirror

Exquisite control of electron beam energy is required for many electron spectroscopy and imaging applications. For both continuous and pulsed beams, the beam energy spread is fundamentally limited by the electron source, and is typically a sizable fraction of an electron-volt. In this paper, we present a means to reduce electron beam energy spread after emission to the level of a few 10s of meV rms using femtosecond photoemission and an interaction with laser-derived single- to few-cycle terahertz (THz) radiation. We show analytically and in particle tracking simulations that this interaction can remove energy spread stored in both the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. We analytically formulate the limit of energy spread that this technique can achieve, and map the non-ideal affects arising at high frequencies. The interaction is mediated by the beam's passage through a mirror which is reflective to terahertz radiation but allows transmission of the majority of the electron beam (e.g. a wire mesh). This method then only requires beam current losses of a few tens of percent, far smaller than what is achieved in prism and slit-based electron monochromators.

Diffuse-direct ultraviolet ratios with a compact double monochromator

An improved system has been implemented for measuring the ratio of the diffuse skylight to the direct sunlight in the biologically active region of the UV near the atmospheric limit. It combines a double monochromator employing holographic gratings for reduction of stray light with a cooled photomultiplier tube to provide a greatly improved SNR below 300 nm. Data may be obtained in either a scan mode or a narrowband photometry mode; in the latter mode accurate ratios have been obtained near 290 nm. Representative data are discussed along with a theoretical model of the ratio. The system is compact enough for use in a mobile monitoring system.

Vacuum ultraviolet monochromator calibration using measured atomic branching ratios

It is noted that there now exists a compendium of experimentally measured transition probability ratios for ionized transitions of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, which can be used for calibration in the VUV spectral region. The emissions proposed for use in this context span the 485-1124 A wavelength interval, and can be easily excited using low pressure discharge lamps of conventional design and dispersed using a monochromator of moderate resolution.

Interface of the transport systems research vehicle monochrome display system to the digital autonomous terminal access communication data bus

An upgrade of the transport systems research vehicle (TSRV) experimental flight system retained the original monochrome display system. The original host computer was replaced with a Norden 11/70, a new digital autonomous terminal access communication (DATAC) data bus was installed for data transfer between display system and host, while a new data interface method was required. The new display data interface uses four split phase bipolar (SPBP) serial busses. The DATAC bus uses a shared interface ram (SIR) for intermediate storage of its data transfer. A display interface unit (DIU) was designed and configured to read from and write to the SIR to properly convert the data from parallel to SPBP serial and vice versa. It is found that separation of data for use by each SPBP bus and synchronization of data tranfer throughout the entire experimental flight system are major problems which require solution in DIU design. The techniques used to accomplish these new data interface requirements are described.

Compact X-Ray And Extreme-Ultraviolet Monochromator

Monochromator for x-ray and extreme-ultraviolet radiation provides higher spectral resolution than achieved with thin-metal-foil broad-band-pass filters. Uses Bragg reflection to band-pass-filter radiation from high-intensity, broad-spectrum source. Operates over much broader x-ray and extreme-ultraviolet spectrum than devices based upon natural crystals. Intended to filter continuum radiation from sources like synchrotrons, laser plasma sources, free-electron lasers, and wigglers to produce monochromatic beams for testing and analysis of x-ray and extreme-ultraviolet telescopes and microscopes, for calibration of photographic films and detectors, for biological and biomedical research, for x-ray lithography, for processing of materials, and for research in properties of materials.

Ultra-High-Spectral-Resolution X-Ray/EUV Monochromator

Ultra-high-spectral-resolution X-Ray/EUV monochromator depends on Bragg reflection from multilayer coats and diffraction by mutlilayer-coated grating to select narrow wavelength band from input beam. Its monochromatic output beam of accurately known wavelength very useful in testing and calibration of x-ray telescopes, x-ray microscopes, photographic films, and photodetectors; in research in biological and biomedical disciplines, x-ray crystallography, properties and processing of materials, and x-ray lasers; and in x-ray lithography.
