Characterization of the new Ultracold Neutron beamline at the LANL UCN facility

The neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment that is currently being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) will use ultracold neutrons (UCN) and Ramsey’s method of separated oscillatory fields to search for a nEDM. Here, in this paper, we present measurements of UCN storage and UCN transport performed during the commissioning of a new beamline at the LANL UCN source and demonstrate a sufficient number of stored polarized UCN to achieve a statistical uncertainty of δd n = 2 x 10 -27 e cm in 5 calendar years of running. We also present an analytical model describing data that provides a simple parameterization of the input UCN energy spectrum on the new beamline.

LANL Meteorological Program Self-Assessment (2022 Update)

The DMCC conducted an initial LANL Meteorological (Met) Program Assist Visit in August 2006, and several observations and recommendations were shared with LANL management (DMCC 2006). In August 2015, a follow-up Met Program Assist Visit was conducted to determine progress in meeting all the observations and recommendations from the prior Assist Visit (DMCC 2015). During the 9 years between these two Assist Visits, DMCC noted that significant program improvements were made, and these were noted in the 2015 Assist Visit observations and recommendations. Based on current discussions with the Met Program, additional significant improvements have been made and will be discussed as part of this self-assessment.

Neutron (and other Particle) Transport at LANL: An Overview [Presentation]

For decades, Los Alamos National Laboratory has been at the forefront of neutron transport methods research and code development. One such code is PARTISN, the LANL parallel time-dependent discrete ordinate neutron transport code. In this presentation, we describe the various research efforts currently underway by the PARTISN and other code teams. Some examples of current research are a block automated mesh refinement scheme, the application of tensor trains to the discretized neutron transport equation, and GPU code porting. The block automated mesh refinement scheme uses cross section information to refine and coarsen the solution mesh to improve time to solution and reduce memory. The tensor train approach expresses discretized transport operators as tensor products of vectors and matrices to compress the size of linear systems being solved by transport codes. Rather than relying on matrix-free methods such as the transport sweep, we have access to an operator that can be inverted, reshaped, or manipulated algebraically. Finally, we describe how PARTISN is used, what problems we are looking to solve, and what the future holds for neutron transport at LANL. In addition to this, we briefly describe the various research efforts in other particle transport teams using both deterministic and Monte Carlo methods. In the presentation, we list possible opportunities for collaboration between the laboratory and faculty and students.

Development of Material Studies at the LANL UCN Facility Focusing on Actinide Hydriding and Fission Damage

The aging of as-built actinide surfaces in static and dynamic environments is a complex problem of high importance to LANL’s core mission. Many standard material science tools used to study this problem are ideal for highly controlled, lab-made samples. The goal of this work is to use ultracold neutrons to bridge the gap between lab made and as-built surface aging studies. This capability is unique to LANL and will support our core mission.

MDDC Multi-Length Scale Data Architecture Contribution Report – PNNL, INL, ANL, LANL and ORNL

This report offers a comprehensive view of data streams currently generated at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory set to integrate into the evolving Multi-Dimensional Data Correlation framework at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Developed by the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies program, the Multi-Dimensional Data Correlation framework serves as a cutting-edge software to manage data relevant to advanced manufacturing and material behavior in advanced reactors. The report defines data streams, highlights their generation methods and visualization methods both for experimental and computational aspects relevant to the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies project. A logical next step for this work is to integrate the MDDC framework into PNNL’s, INL’s, ANL’s, LANL’s and ORNL’s fabrication, experimentation, and modelling workflows. This would require setting up the MDDC framework at PNNL, INL, ANL, and LANL and integrating it into the data collection and storage for these different activities.

EPCAPE-PT-LANL Measurements: NO/NOx Analyzer

Coastal cities offer a unique environment for studying aerosol-cloud interactions and the effects of urban emissions on cloud properties. As part of the Eastern Pacific Cloud Aerosol Precipitation Experiment (EPCAPE), the Partitioning Thrust by Los Alamos National Laboratory (EPCAPE-PT-LANL) was conducted. Our campaign focused on measuring the optical and chemical properties of aerosols and their interactions within marine stratocumulus clouds in La Jolla, California. EPCAPE-PT-LANL enhances the primary goals of EPCAPE through innovative observations of vapor-phase transitions between aerosols and cloud droplets, the impact of black carbon on aerosol-cloud dynamics, and the effects of cloud processing on aerosol optical properties. Instrument: NO2/NO/NOx Monitor (2B-Technology) Header: - NO2_2B[ppb]: Concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measured at the time of the sampling, expressed in parts per billion. - NO_2B[ppb]: Concentration of nitric oxide (NO) measured at the time of the sampling, expressed in parts per billion. - NOx_2B[ppb]: Total concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx, which includes NO and NO2) measured at the time of the sampling, expressed in parts per billion.

Instrument: Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (TSI), DMA Classifier Model 3082 + CPC Detector Model 3752. Data Notes: The SMPS dataset is limited due to necessary instrument maintenance and subsequent extensive downtime. Data is only available from October 21 to November 8, 2023. Post November 22, 2023, the NanoScan instrument provided coverage for the latter half of the campaign. To ensure consistency, the data was resampled into uniform size bins ranging from 15 nm to 667 nm. This adjustment was required due to changes in size bins and the maximum diameter that occurred after maintenance and repairs. Multiple Charge Correction applied, Nanoparticle Agglomerate Mobility Analysis not applied, and Diffusion Correction applied. Header: - List [15 nm to 667 nm] middle of the size bin in nanometers: Data reports the concentration particles in this size bin per cubic centimeter, dN/dLog(dp). - CVI_Flag[bool]: A boolean flag indicating whether the Counterflow Virtual Impactor (CVI) was active (true) or inactive (false) during the measurement.
