Numerical Study of a Dual Representation of the Integer Quantum Hall Transition

Here, we study the critical properties of the noninteracting integer quantum Hall to insulator transition (IQHIT) in a “dual” composite-fermion (CF) representation. A key advantage of the CF representation over electron coordinates is that at criticality CF states are delocalized at all energies. The CF approach thus enables us to study the transition from a new vantage point. Using a lattice representation of CF mean-field theory, we compute the critical and multifractal exponents of the IQHIT. We obtain ν = 2.56 ± 0.02 and η = 0.51 ± 0.01, both of which are consistent with the predictions of the Chalker-Coddington network model formulated in the electron representation.

Spectral Function of the Chiral One-Dimensional Fermi Liquid in the Regime of Strong Interactions

We study momentum-resolved tunneling into a system of spinless chiral one-dimensional fermions, such as electrons at the edge of an integer quantum Hall system. Interactions between particles give rise to broadening of the spectral function of the system. We develop an approach that enables one to obtain the shape of the peak in the spectral function in the regime of strong interaction. We apply our technique to the special cases of short-range and Coulomb interactions.

Chern Insulators at Integer and Fractional Filling in Moiré Pentalayer Graphene

The advent of moiré platforms for engineered quantum matter has led to discoveries of integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall effects, with predictions for correlation-driven topological states based on electron crystallization. Here, we report an array of trivial and topological insulators formed in a moiré lattice of rhomobohedral pentalayer graphene (R5G). At a doping of one electron per moiré unit cell ( ν = 1 ), we see a correlated insulator with a Chern number that can be tuned between C = 0 and + 1 by an electric displacement field. This is accompanied by a series of additional Chern insulators with C = + 1 originating from fractional fillings of the moiré lattice— ν = 1 / 4 , 1 / 3 , and 2 / 3 —associated with the formation of moiré-driven topological electronic crystals. At ν = 2 / 3 the system exhibits an integer quantum anomalous Hall effect at zero magnetic field, but further develops hints of an incipient C = 2 / 3 fractional Chern insulator in a modest field. Our results establish moiré R5G as a fertile platform for studying the competition and potential intertwining of integer and fractional Chern insulators. Topological approach to electron correlations at fractional quantum Hall effect

Highlights: • Braids in 2D electron systems in magnetic field acquire a cyclotron metrics. • Commensurability of 2D braids with Wigner crystal of electrons leads to FQHE. • Homotopy invariants define the hierarchy of FQHE universal in all 2D Hall systems. • Composite fermions illustrate multiloop braids in the simplest homotopy case. • Correlations in FQHE reveal long-range quantum entanglement of all electrons. The classification of homotopy invariants in interacting multi-electron 2D systems at quantizing magnetic fields is presented, explaining the topologically protected correlations occurring at integer and fractional quantum Hall effects. The long-range quantum entanglement is essential for homotopy correlated phases in contrast to the binary entanglement for conventional phases with local order parameters. The classification of homotopy long-range correlated phases induced by the Coulomb interaction of electrons has been derived in terms of homotopy invariants, which are universal and robust against local disorder and single-particle crystal field, as illustrated by experimental observations in various materials with different microscopic structure, like GaAs 2DES, graphene monolayer and bilayer and in Chern topological insulators. The homotopy phases are demonstrated to be topologically protected and immune to single-particle perturbations, temperature chaos and variation of the electron interaction strength. The nonzero repulsive interaction between electrons is shown, however, to be essential for the definition of the homotopy invariants, which disappear in gaseous systems.

Fractional quantization in insulators from Hall to Chern

The discovery of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects naturally prompted the question of whether these effects can be realized without a magnetic field. Answering this is fundamentally important and requires a synthesis of the concepts of band topology, quantum geometry and electronic correlations. Here we summarize the basic concepts of both fractional Chern and fractional topological insulators and illustrate them with the theoretical lattice models that support the flat Chern bands in which the states were first predicted. We then examine their experimental realizations in twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides and moiré rhombohedral few-layer graphene. Here, we also discuss the future challenges and opportunities in this research field.

Topological aspects of matters and Langlands program

The Langlands program is a vast mathematical projection linking number theory and geometry. In high-energy physics, a connection with mirror symmetry has been suggested in string theory, but it has been little studied in low-energy physics. In the framework of the Langlands program, we present a unified description of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect and the duality found in the fractal nature of the energy spectrum of two-dimensional Bloch electrons, statistical physics, and quantum computation. The new unified view of existing dualism presented in this paper raises the entirely new question of how each theory of physics is connected as a piece of the Langlands program.

Exactly Solvable Model for Strongly Interacting Electrons in a Magnetic Field

States of strongly interacting particles are of fundamental interest in physics and can produce exotic emergent phenomena and topological structures. We consider here two-dimensional electrons in a magnetic field, and, departing from the standard practice of restricting to the lowest LL, introduce a model short-range interaction that is infinitely strong compared to the cyclotron energy. Here, we demonstrate that this model lends itself to an exact solution for the ground as well as excited states at arbitrary filling factors v<1/2p and produces a fractional quantum Hall effect at fractions of the form v=n/(2pn+1), where n and p are integers. The fractional quantum Hall states of our model share many topological properties with the corresponding Coulomb ground states in the lowest Landau level, such as the edge physics and the fractional charge of the excitations.

Anomalous Hall crystals in rhombohedral multilayer graphene. II. General mechanism and a minimal model

Here we propose a minimal "three-patch model"for the anomalous Hall crystal (AHC), a topological electronic state that spontaneously breaks both time-reversal symmetry and continuous translation symmetry. The proposal for this state is inspired by the recently observed integer and fractional quantum Hall states in rhombohedral multilayer graphene at zero magnetic field. There, interaction effects appear to amplify the effects of a weak moiré potential, leading to the formation of stable, isolated Chern bands. It has been further shown that Chern bands are stabilized in mean-field calculations even without a moiré potential, enabling a realization of the AHC state. Our model is built on the dissection of the Brillouin zone into patches centered around high-symmetry points. Within this model, the wave functions at high-symmetry points fully determine the topology and energetics of the state. We extract two quantum geometrical phases of the noninteracting wave functions that control the stability of the topologically nontrivial AHC state. The model predicts that the AHC state wins over the topological trivial Wigner crystal in a wide range of parameters, and agrees very well with the results of full self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations of the rhombohedral multilayer graphene Hamiltonian.

Magic in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers

The long-wavelength moiré superlattices in twisted 2D structures have emerged as a highly tunable platform for strongly correlated electron physics. We study the moiré bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers, focusing on WSe 2 , at small twist angles using a combination of first principles density functional theory, continuum modeling, and Hartree-Fock approximation. We reveal the rich physics at small twist angles θ < 4°, and identify a particular magic angle at which the top valence moiré band achieves almost perfect flatness. In the vicinity of this magic angle, we predict the realization of a generalized Kane-Mele model with a topological flat band, interaction-driven Haldane insulator, and Mott insulators at the filling of one hole per moiré unit cell. The combination of flat dispersion and uniformity of Berry curvature near the magic angle holds promise for realizing fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect at fractional filling. We also identify twist angles favorable for quantum spin Hall insulators and interaction-induced quantum anomalous Hall insulators at other integer fillings.

Strongly coupled edge states in a graphene quantum Hall interferometer

Electronic interferometers using the chiral, one-dimensional (1D) edge channels of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) can demonstrate a wealth of fundamental phenomena. The recent observation of phase jumps in a Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometer revealed anyonic quasiparticle exchange statistics in the fractional QHE. When multiple integer edge channels are involved, FP interferometers have exhibited anomalous Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference frequency doubling, suggesting putative pairing of electrons into 2e quasiparticles. Here, we use a highly tunable graphene-based QHE FP interferometer to observe the connection between interference phase jumps and AB frequency doubling, unveiling how strong repulsive interaction between edge channels leads to the apparent pairing phenomena. By tuning electron density in-situ from filling factor v < 2 to v > 7, we tune the interaction strength and observe periodic interference phase jumps leading to AB frequency doubling. Our observations demonstrate that the combination of repulsive interaction between the spin-split v = 2 edge channels and charge quantization is sufficient to explain the frequency doubling, through a near-perfect charge screening between the localized and extended edge channels. Our results show that interferometers are sensitive probes of microscopic interactions and enable future experiments studying correlated electrons in 1D channels using density-tunable graphene.

Criticality of Two-Dimensional Disordered Dirac Fermions in the Unitary Class and Universality of the Integer Quantum Hall Transition

Two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions are a central paradigm of modern condensed matter physics, describing low-energy excitations in graphene, in certain classes of superconductors, and on surfaces of 3D topological insulators. At zero energy E=0, Dirac fermions with mass m are band insulators, with the Chern number jumping by unity at m=0. This observation lead Ludwig et al. [Phys. Rev. B 50, 7526 (1994)PRBMDO0163-182910.1103/PhysRevB.50.7526] to conjecture that the transition in 2D disordered Dirac fermions (DDF) and the integer quantum Hall transition (IQHT) are controlled by the same fixed point and possess the same universal critical properties. Given the far-reaching implications for the emerging field of the quantum anomalous Hall effect, modern condensed matter physics, and our general understanding of disordered critical points, it is surprising that this conjecture has never been tested numerically. In this work, we report the results of extensive numerics on the phase diagram and criticality of 2D DDF in the unitary class. We find a critical line at m=0, with an energy-dependent localization length exponent. At large energies, our results for the DDF are consistent with state-of-the-art numerical results ν IQH =2.56-2.62 from models of the IQHT. At E=0, however, we obtain ν 0 =2.30-2.36 incompatible with ν IQH . This result challenges conjectured relations between different models of the IQHT, and several interpretations are discussed.

Scattering of Magnons at Graphene Quantum-Hall-Magnet Junctions

Motivated by recent nonlocal transport studies of quantum-Hall-magnet (QHM) states formed in monolayer graphene’s N = 0 Landau level, here we study the scattering of QHM magnons by gate-controlled junctions between states with different integer filling factors ν . For the ν = 1 | – 1 | 1 geometry we find that magnons are weakly scattered by electric potential variation in the junction region, and that the scattering is chiral when the junction lacks a mirror symmetry. For the ν = 1 | 0 | 1 geometry, we find that kinematic constraints completely block magnon transmission if the incident angle exceeds a critical value. Our results explain the suppressed nonlocal–voltage signals observed in the ν = 1 | 0 | 1 case. We use our theory to propose that valley waves generated at ν = – 1 | 1 junctions and magnons can be used in combination to probe the spin or valley flavor structure of QHM states at integer and fractional filling factors.

Optical control of integer and fractional Chern insulators

Optical control of topology, particularly in the presence of electron correlations, is an interesting topic with broad scientific and technological impact. Twisted MoTe 2 bilayer (tMoTe 2 ) is a zero-field fractional Chern insulator (FCI), exhibiting the fractionally quantized anomalous Hall effect. As the chirality of the edge states and sign of the Chern number are determined by the underlying ferromagnetic polarization, manipulation of ferromagnetism would realize control of the Chern insulator (CI)/FCI states. Here, in this work, we demonstrate control of ferromagnetic polarization, and thus the CI and FCI states, by circularly polarized optical pumping in tMoTe 2 . At low excitation power, we achieve on-demand preparation of ferromagnetic polarization by optical training, that is, electrically tuning the system from non-ferromagnetic to desirable ferromagnetic states under helicity-selective optical pumping. With increased excitation power, we further realize direct optical switching of ferromagnetic polarization at a temperature far below the Curie temperature. Both optical training and direct switching are most effective near CI and FCI states, which we attribute to a gap-enhanced valley polarization of optically pumped holes. The magnetization can be dynamically switched by modulating the helicity of optical excitation. Spatially resolved measurements further demonstrate optical writing of ferromagnetic, and thus CI (or FCI) domains. Our work realizes precise optical control of a topological quantum many-body system with potential applications in topological spintronics, quantum memories and creation of exotic edge states by programmable patterning of integer and fractionally quantized anomalous Hall domains.

Thermal activation signatures of the Anderson insulator and the Wigner solid forming near ν = 1

When interactions overcome disorder, integer quantum Hall plateaus support topological phases with different bulk insulators. In the center of the ν = 1 plateau the bulk is an Anderson-type insulator, while in the flanks of the plateau the bulk is the integer quantum Hall Wigner solid. We find that the activation energy along the ν = 1 plateau exhibits a very dramatic nonmonotonic dependence on the magnetic field, a dependence that is strongly correlated with the stability regions of the two phases. Furthermore, the activation energy has an unexpected minimum at the boundary between the Anderson insulator and the Wigner solid. Our findings constrain the theory of the integer quantum Hall Wigner solid, determine its thermodynamic properties, and reveal unusual behavior at the boundary between the Anderson insulator and the Wigner solid. Quantum Anomalous Hall Crystal at Fractional Filling of Moiré Superlattices

We predict the emergence of a state of matter with intertwined ferromagnetism, charge order, and topology in fractionally filled moiré superlattice bands. Remarkably, these quantum anomalous Hall crystals exhibit a quantized integer Hall conductance that is different than expected from the filling and Chern number of the band. Microscopic calculations show that this phase is robustly favored at half-filling (𝜈 =1/2) at larger twist angles of the twisted semiconductor bilayer 𝑡⁢MoTe 2 .

Adiabatic construction of hierarchical quantum Hall states

We propose an exact model of anyon ground states including higher Landau levels, and use it to obtain fractionally quantized Hall states at filling fractions ν = p/(p(m - 1) + 1) with m odd, from integer Hall states at ν = p through adiabatic localization of magnetic flux. For appropriately chosen two-body potential interactions, the energy gap remains intact during the process. The construction hence establishes the existence of incompressible states at these fillings.

Intrinsic even-odd thickness-driven anomalous Hall effect in epitaxial MnBi2⁢Te4 thin films

We demonstrate precise control of magnetism in MnBi2⁢Te4 thin films through careful synthesis by molecular beam epitaxy, achieving minimal defects and accurate layer thickness control. By optimizing Mn-Bi-Te ratios and growth temperatures, we minimize detrimental self-doping effects and accurately target integer-layer films. X-ray diffraction and reflectivity provide quantitative measures of film quality and thickness. When these macroscale probes of structure and thickness are integrated with magnetotransport measurements, a striking even-odd layer dependence of the anomalous Hall effect is revealed. Odd-layer films exhibit a large hysteresis up to the Néel temperature (∼25K), consistent with noncompensated antiferromagnetism, while even-layer films show minimal response, as expected for an antiferromagnet. The sign of the anomalous Hall effect exhibits a sign reversal for intrinsic magnetism versus magnetism associated with defects. This work identifies critical factors for inducing pure, noncompensated ferromagnetism and reveals the characteristics of the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in MnBi2⁢Te4, which together is a step toward realizing the zero-field quantum anomalous Hall effect in topological materials.

Torus geometry eigenfunctions of an interacting multi-Landau-level Hamiltonian

A short-ranged, rotationally symmetric multi-Landau-level model Hamiltonian for strongly interacting electrons in a magnetic field was proposed [A. Anand et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 136601 (2021)] with the key feature that it allows exact many-body eigenfunctions on the disk not just for quasiholes but for all charged and neutral excitations of the entire Jain sequence filling fractions. We extend this to geometries without full rotational symmetry, namely, the torus and cylinder geometries, and present their spectra. Exact diagonalization of the interaction on the torus produces the low-energy spectra at filling fraction v = n/(2⁢pn + 1) that is identical, up to a topological (2⁢pn + 1)-fold multiplicity, to that of the integer quantum Hall spectra at v = n, for the incompressible state as well as all excitations. While the ansatz eigenfunctions in the disk geometry cannot be generalized to closed geometries such as torus or sphere, we show how to extend them to cylinder geometry. Meanwhile, we show eigenfunctions for charged excitations at filling fractions between 1/3 and 2/5 can be written on the torus and the spherical geometries.
