Upgrade and interpersonal skills training at American Airlines

Segments of the interpersonal skills training audio visual program are presented. The program was developed to train customer contact personnel with specific emphasis on transactional analysis in customer treatment. Concepts of transactional analysis are summarized in terms of the make up of the personality, identified as the three ego states. These ego states are identified as the parent, the adult, and the child. Synopses of four of the tape programs are given.

Fiducial reference for the HIPPARCOS reference system

The groundwork was prepared for observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to tie the coordinate system of the European Astrometry Satellite HIPPARCOS to an extragalactic (VLBI) reference frame, and to determine the rotation of the HIPPARCOS frame with respect to the extragalactic frame. A total of 90 Extragalactic Optical Objects (EGOs) were determined in the vicinity (angular separation less than 18 arcminutes) of 160 HIPPARCOS stars (brighter than about 11.0 magnitude, mostly SAO stars brighter than 10.5), evenly distributed over the sky, to be used to tie the HIPPARCOS system to the Extragalactic Reference Frame. The pairs are to be observed with the HST Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS), sometimes in conjunction with the HST Planetary Camera, in order to determine the relative positions and motions of the individual HIPPARCOS stars with respect to the EGOs. The data base which contains the optical information used to generate the HST Guaranteed Observing Time (GTO) proposal is included.

Spatial cognition and navigation

An experiment that provides data for the development of a cognitive model of pilot flight navigation is described. The experiment characterizes navigational awareness as the mental alignment of two frames of reference: (1) the ego centered reference frame that is established by the forward view out of the cockpit and (2) the world centered reference frame that is established by the aircraft's location on a map. The data support a model involving at least two components: (1) the perceptual encoding of the navigational landmarks and (2) the mental rotation of the map's world reference frame into alignment with the ego centered reference frame. The quantitative relationships of these two factors are provided as possible inputs for a computational model of spatial cognition during flight navigation.

Optical variability of extragalactic objects used to tie the HIPPARCOS reference frame to an extragalactic system using Hubble space telescope observations

Observations of a set of 89 extragalactic objects (EGOs) will be made with the Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensors and Planetary Camera in order to link the HIPPARCOS Instrumental System to an extragalactic coordinate system. Most of the sources chosen for observation contain compact radio sources and stellarlike nuclei; 65 percent are optical variables beyond a 0.2 mag limit. To ensure proper exposure times, accurate mean magnitudes are necessary. In many cases, the average magnitudes listed in the literature were not adequate. The literature was searched for all relevant photometric information for the EGOs, and photometric parameters were derived, including mean magnitude, maximum range, and timescale of variability. This paper presents the results of that search and the parameters derived. The results will allow exposure times to be estimated such that an observed magnitude different from the tabular magnitude by 0.5 mag in either direction will not degrade the astrometric centering ability on a Planetary Camera CCD frame.

Map display design

This paper presents a cognitive model of a pilot's navigation task and describes an experiment comparing a visual momentum map display to the traditional track-up and north-up approaches. The data show the advantage to a track-up map is its congruence with the ego-centered forward view; however, the development of survey knowledge is hindered by the inconsistency of the rotating display. The stable alignment of a north-up map aids the acquisition of survey knowledge, but there is a cost associated with the mental rotation of the display to a track-up alignment for ego-centered tasks. The results also show that visual momentum can be used to reduce the mental rotation costs of a north-up display.

Robust Controller Synthesis for Vision-based Spacecraft Guidance and Control

This work develops a method for Robust Controller for Vision-based Spacecraft (RCVS) guidance and control, integral to the robust autonomy framework for multi-spacecraft for- mation control and reconfiguration applications. The method is built around the use of a photo-realistic simulator, where a camera is deployed on a tracking spacecraft (ego) in order to observe an uncontrolled spacecraft (target) in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO). In this direction, the proposed approach performs the relative state (attitude and position) estimation of the target spacecraft using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The state estimation error is then modeled and the corresponding error-bounds are obtained around a nominal trajectory of the ego and target spacecraft. Next, this work proposes a linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) based approach to controller synthesis, guaranteed to be robust against both model uncertainties and measurement errors, resulting from vision-based estimation. This controller is comprised of two distinct components, one synthesized based on the nominal trajectory, while the “robust” component corrects for deviations from the nominal trajectory. Finally, a tracking scenario that directly utilize the image data for spacecraft guidance and control, is presented to showcase the performance of the proposed robust autonomy framework.

Robust Vision-based Multi-spacecraft Guidance Navigation and Control using CNN-based Pose Estimation

In this paper, we present an end-to-end simulation framework for tracking an uncooperative Target spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit using a CubeSat-class Ego spacecraft outfitted with a camera. Currently, capturing high-fidelity realistic images in space for this scenario is difficult and exorbitantly expensive. Therefore, we developed a framework to simulate the spacecraft orbits in Basilisk software and generate high-fidelity realistic images of spacecraft in Unreal Engine, including the effects from Sun, Earth, Moon and stars. The Ego spacecraft uses cameras to capture images of the uncooperative Target and estimates its position and attitude using a CNN based 6DOF pose estimation pipeline, eliminating need for large SWAP-C(Size, Weight, Power and Cost) sensors like LIDAR or reliance on inter-spacecraft communication, This CNN, which is motivated by ESA’s Pose Estimation challenge of 2019, is trained using simulated data from our end-to-end simulation framework. We compare the performance of two distinct CNNbased algorithms for pose estimation along a nominal trajectory. In presence of non-Gaussian modeling uncertainties, the statedependent estimation error is characterized with a quadratic upper-bound. The quadratically-bounded error can be used by a robust controller to maneuver

Efficient Global Optimization with Gradient Finish for Design Under Uncertainty

The Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) algorithm is extended to include a gradient-descent-based finish upon reaching a threshold value of the expected improvement function. Emphasis is placed on efficient evaluation of local gradients using Kriging models during the gradient-based finish to enable application to design under uncertainty (DUU) problems. The modified algorithm is applied to both the well-known Rosenbrock function and a more challenging hypersonic inlet design under uncertainty problem. Results demonstrate improvement in locating the global optimum compared to the classical implementation of EGO, as well as a reduced number of true function evaluations compared to pure gradient-based algorithms. For the Rosenbrock function, a global optimum is returned using an average of 12% fewer function calls than a gradient-based optimizer with comparable tolerances. For the design under uncertainty problem, a global optimum is found using an average of 75% fewer function calls than a gradient-based optimizer. Global Pareto fronts of multiobjective DUU problems are obtained at little additional cost after a single optimization is complete.

String instability mitigation of adaptive cruise control without modifying control laws: trajectory shaper and parameter estimation

Vehicle automation technologies equip vehicles with adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems, which relieve driving fatigue. However, recent studies have shown that the current ACC systems are string-unstable (i.e., exacerbate traffic congestion). To achieve string stability, most existing studies directly modify the control algorithms of ACC systems. Alternatively, this study proposes a trajectory shaper (TS)-based method, which only modifies the trajectory information of the predecessor vehicle, so that the ego vehicle driven by a string-unstable ACC system leverages the modified trajectory information to achieve string stability. To devise the TS-based method, an offline-online parameter estimation method integrating batch optimization and an extended Kalman filter is applied to estimate the parameters of an ACC system. The proposed TS-based method is cost-effective during implementation, as it avoids modifying existing ACC control algorithms (which entails a complex analysis of control systems and parameter tuning). In conclusion, the effectiveness of the proposed TS-based method is validated through extensive numerical experiments.

ObstacleSense: Low-Power Neuromorphic Vision for Corridor Obstacle Awareness in Low-Level ADAS

The automotive industry’s pursuit of Level 5 autonomy is constrained by substantial perception-compute power requirements, often reaching 1, 000 + watts in full autonomy stacks. Reducing this energy burden requires rethinking perception not only at the high-end autonomy level, but also at the foundational Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) level where low-power, safety-critical sensing can have broad impact. Neuromorphic vision provides a promising starting point: HD Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS) can operate below 100 mW at the sensor level by reporting only asynchronous brightness changes. However, low-power sensing alone is insufficient if downstream perception reintroduces dense, energy-intensive computation. In particular, many event-driven object-detection pipelines still rely on CNN backbones, while purely spiking alternatives often trade away accuracy or ignore deployment constraints. We introduce ObstacleSense, a highly compact, CNN-free hybrid ANN–SNN framework for Level 0–1 forward-corridor obstacle awareness. Instead of performing full-scene object detection with a convolutional feature backbone, ObstacleSense targets the safety-critical question of whether the ego corridor is occupied and how far the nearest obstacle is. The architecture combines polarity-conditioned event encoding, lightweight temporal spiking dynamics, axial spatial mixing, and coarse-to-fine range estimation within a regular fixed-grid compute pattern. This design avoids the dense CNN backbone commonly used in event-based detection while maintaining a small state footprint suitable for eventual small-FPGA deployment. Before hardware mapping, we evaluate the software implementation using a model-side power proxy derived from MACs, weight and activation traffic, and spiking state updates under shared FP16 assumptions. On simulated CARLA event corpora, the deployment-oriented model achieves 0.9464 objectness F1, 0.9978 grid-level mAP, and 0.8987 m distance Mean Absolute Error at an estimated 1.92 mW proxy cost, while maintaining performance on unseen generalization test sequences.

Effects of stress upon psychophysiological responses and performance following sleep deprivation

The usefulness of psychological and physiological variables in predicting performance under stress of 48 hours of sleep deprivation was investigated. Performance tests, with subjects of different ego strength personalities, in concept acquisition, reading comprehension, word association, word memory, and anagrams were conducted, and physiological measurements of (1) the phasic and tonic electrodermal, (2) galvanic skin response, (3) thermal skin resistance, (4) heart rate, (5) respiration, and (6) plethysmographic finger pulse volumn were recorded. It was found that the changes in the pattern of performance were the result of testing subjects at times when they would normally be sleeping, and that sleep deprivation longer than 48 hours must be maintained to produce changes in simple or well learned tasks.

Using Space Telescope to tie the HIPPARCOS and extragalactic reference frames together

Hubble Space Telescope observations will be made to tie the HIPPARCOS Instrumental System (HIS) to extragalactic objects, to determine the overall rotation of the HIS with respect to a set of extragalactic objects; to compare the HIS to an accurate radio reference frame; and to look for motions in the optical centroids of compact extragalactic objects at the level of 0.001 arcseconds per year. About 75 radio sources and extragalactic objects will be chosen from the initial group of 414 pairs. The egos will have their positions and proper motions determined relative to the HIPPARCOS Input Catalog stars. The candidate stars are being screened by ground based speckle interferometry to select a final set.
