A new dry biomedical electrode

Electronic circuitry contains new operational amplifier which incorporates monolithic super-gain transistors. Electrode does not provide voltage amplification; instead, it acts as current amplifier to make it possible to pick up electrical potentials from surface of highly resistant dry skin.

High-Power, High-Frequency Si-Based (SiGe) Transistors Developed

Future NASA, DOD, and commercial products will require electronic circuits that have greater functionality and versatility but occupy less space and cost less money to build and integrate than current products. System on a Chip (SOAC), a single semiconductor substrate containing circuits that perform many functions or containing an entire system, is widely recognized as the best technology for achieving low-cost, small-sized systems. Thus, a circuit technology is required that can gather, process, store, and transmit data or communications. Since silicon-integrated circuits are already used for data processing and storage and the infrastructure that supports silicon circuit fabrication is very large, it is sensible to develop communication circuits on silicon so that all the system functions can be integrated onto a single wafer. Until recently, silicon integrated circuits did not function well at the frequencies required for wireless or microwave communications, but with the introduction of small amounts of germanium into the silicon to make silicon-germanium (SiGe) transistors, silicon-based communication circuits are possible. Although microwavefrequency SiGe circuits have been demonstrated, there has been difficulty in obtaining the high power from their transistors that is required for the amplifiers of a transmitter, and many researchers have thought that this could not be done. The NASA Glenn Research Center and collaborators at the University of Michigan have developed SiGe transistors and amplifiers with state-of-the-art output power at microwave frequencies from 8 to 20 GHz. These transistors are fabricated using standard silicon processing and may be integrated with CMOS integrated circuits on a single chip. A scanning electron microscope image of a typical SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor is shown in the preceding photomicrograph. This transistor achieved a record output power of 550 mW and an associated power-added efficiency of 33 percent at 8.4 GHz, as shown. Record performance was also demonstrated at 12.6 and 18 GHz. Developers have combined these state-of-the-art transistors with transmission lines and micromachined passive circuit components, such as inductors and capacitors, to build multistage amplifiers. Currently, a 1-W, 8.4-GHz power amplifier is being built for NASA deep space communication architectures.

Improved LEEM ranges over four decades

Low-energy electron magnetometer is suitable for terrestrial and aerial applications. Electron beam strikes tantalum collector plates in device, amplifying current and converting it to frequency. Current difference increases with beam deflection, providing measure of local field strength. LEEM operation requires no liquid helium unlike superconducting quantum interference device. LEEM sensitivity compares favorably with that of optical absorption magnetometers, and microsecond response range makes analyzing fast magnetic transients and signatures possible.

Tuned analog network

A noninverting, direct current amplifier stage is cascaded into an integrator stage to form a two stage tuned network with a single input junction common to both stages. The network provides independent adjustment of center frequency, bandwidth and voltage gain. The insertion of a positive feedback loop between the stages provides a very narrow bandwidth network. The addition of back to back zener diodes between the common input node and ground converts the network into an oscillator.

Test bed ion engine development

A test bed ion (TBI) engine was developed to serve as a tool in exploring the limits of electrostatic ion thruster performance. A description of three key ion engine components, the decoupled extraction and amplified current (DE-AC) accelerator system, field enhanced refractory metal (FERM) hollow cathode and divergent line cusp (DLC) discharge chamber, whose designs and operating philosophies differ markedly from conventional thruster technology is given. Significant program achievements were: (1) high current density DE-AC accelerator system operation at low electric field stress with indicated feasibility of a 60 mA/sq cm argon ion beam; (2) reliable FERM cathode start up times of 1 to 2 secs. and demonstrated 35 ampere emission levels; (3) DLC discharge chamber plasma potentials negative of anode potential; and (4) identification of an efficient high plasma density engine operating mode. Using the performance projections of this program and reasonable estimates of other parameter values, a 1.0 Newton thrust ion engine is identified as a realizable technology goal. Calculations show that such an engine, comparable in beam area to a J series 30 cm thruster, could, operating on Xe or Hg, have thruster efficiencies as high as 0.76 and 0.78 respectively, with a 100 eV/ion discharge loss.

Coronal plasmas on the sun and nearby stars

The current understanding of the quiescent, or non-flaring, microwave emission from solar active regions is summarized. The thermal radiation mechanisms that account for most of the quiescent emission is reviewed, while it is also pointed out that current-amplified magnetic fields or non-thermal radiation may be required in some instances. The 20 cm radiation of coronal loops and the thermal cyclotron lines that accurately specify their magnetic field strength are discussed. The 20 cm and X ray emission of the coronal plasma are then compared. The coronae of nearby stars is next discussed, where coherent radiation processes seem to prevail. Some thoughts toward directions for future exploration are given.

Nonlinear Control of Large Disturbances in Magnetic Bearing Systems

In this paper, the nonlinear operation of magnetic bearing control methods is reviewed. For large disturbances, the effects of displacement constraints and power amplifier current and di/dt limits on bearing control system performance are analyzed. The operation of magnetic bearings exhibiting self-excited large scale oscillations have been studied both experimentally and by simulation. The simulation of the bearing system has been extended to include the effects of eddy currents in the actuators, so as to improve the accuracy of the simulation results. The results of these experiments and simulations are compared, and some useful conclusions are drawn for improving bearing system robustness.

High resolution color band pyrometer ratioing

The sensing head of a two-color band ratioing pyrometer of a known type using a fiber optic cable to couple radiation to dual detector photodiodes is improved to have high spatial resolution by focusing the radiation received through an objective lens (i.e., by focusing the image of a target area) onto an opaque sheet spaced in front of the input end of the fiber optic cable. A two-mil hole in that sheet then passes radiation to the input end of the cable. The detector has two channels, one for each color band, with an electronic-chopper stabilized current amplifier as the input stage followed by an electronic-chopper stabilized voltage amplifier.

Low current linearization of magnetic amplifier for dc transducer

A magnetic amplifier having two saturable reactor cores with a separate excitation winding on each connected in series opposition, a common control winding, and a common output winding, is adapted for use as a low level signal transducer. The separate excitation windings are excited in push-pull mode through a center tapped transformer, and at least one diode is included in series with a load resistor connected to the output winding. A resistor in series with the output winding and load resistor is connected between the center tap of the excitation transformer and the connection between the two excitation windings of the saturable cores. This series resistor provides a return current path for the output winding and allows the excitation windings of the saturable cores to operate as primary windings of transformers.

Logarithmic circuit with wide dynamic range

A circuit deriving an output voltage that is proportional to the logarithm of a dc input voltage susceptible to wide variations in amplitude includes a constant current source which forward biases a diode so that the diode operates in the exponential portion of its voltage versus current characteristic, above its saturation current. The constant current source includes first and second, cascaded feedback, dc operational amplifiers connected in negative feedback circuit. An input terminal of the first amplifier is responsive to the input voltage. A circuit shunting the first amplifier output terminal includes a resistor in series with the diode. The voltage across the resistor is sensed at the input of the second dc operational feedback amplifier. The current flowing through the resistor is proportional to the input voltage over the wide range of variations in amplitude of the input voltage.

Apparatus for measuring high frequency currents

An apparatus for measuring high frequency currents includes a non-ferrous core current probe that is coupled to a wide-band transimpedance amplifier. The current probe has a secondary winding with a winding resistance that is substantially smaller than the reactance of the winding. The sensitivity of the current probe is substantially flat over a wide band of frequencies. The apparatus is particularly useful for measuring exposure of humans to radio frequency currents.

Bipolar current driver for memory circuits

Circuit which logically determines the state of a flip-flop and amplifies the current from a clock pulse provides a bipolar driving current to a memory circuit, the polarity of which is determined by the state of a flip-flop. This principle may be applied to various memory driving circuits where power dissipation must be minimized.

Welding-Current Indicator

Light flashes on to indicate high current. Simple, inexpensive display circuit indicates when 3,000-A welding current flows in welding gun. Onset of welding current induces voltage and current in 1,000-turn, 28-gauge copper-wire coil. Single-transistor amplifier amplifies induced current, energizing light-emitting diode (LED) connected to collector of transistor. Light from LED gives simple, direct indication of welding current.
