Tests are performed on wire and insulation materials to determine selection for electronic space assemblies. Wire characteristics of tensile strength, flexibility, conductivity, and general workability are tested. Knowledge of the advantages and limitations of these materials should prevent overspecification.
Traveling wire electrode on electrical discharge machining /EDM/ equipment reduces the time requirements for precision cutting. This device enables cutting with a minimum of lost material and without inducing stress beyond that inherent in the material. The use of wire increases accuracy and enables tighter tolerances to be maintained.
Three separate mechanisms test the insulation on electrical wire specimens for mechanical resistance to flexure, abrasion or wear, and vibration. The test mechanisms perform the evaluation tests on insulated wire specimens in a chamber which can be controlled to simulate space or spacecraft cabin environments.
Welding torch and wire feed manipulator increase capability for performing automatic welding operations. The manipulator rotates on its horizontal axis to avoid obstacles as they approach the torch. The initial individual attitudes of the torch and wire guide are set with respect to the general configuration of the part.
Gage nondestructively monitors the quality of cross-wire resistance welds during the welding operation. The gage gives a dial indication of the relative embedment of the cross wires during the actual welding operation. A direct relationship exists between the depth of embedment and both weld strength and consistency.

Composite of fine niobium wires in copper is used to study the size and proximity effects of a superconductor in a normal matrix. The niobium rod was drawn to a 100 angstrom diameter wire on a copper tubing.
Device welds fine gage wire 0.001-in. in diameter. It permits welding of thermocouple junctions of the same size with straight sections adjacent to the junctions. Electrode arrangement provides constant pressure on the joint during welding while fully supporting the wires to prevent buckling or movement.
Microloop pull test is developed to stress wire loops in situ until failure. The applied loads, the nature of the fracture, and its location are recorded. This test also stresses the wire bonds.
Soft, flexible electrode conforms to body contour during body motion. It is fabricated from an elastomer impregnated with a conductive powder which can be configured into any required shape, including a wire shape to connect the electrode directly to an electrical instrument or to a conventional metallic wire.

Fixture holds flat conductor cable and wires in position until after soldering of contacting conductor ends and potting of junctions. Device provides for proper spacing of wires and adequate access for soldered joints during fabrication, and positions mold halves during potting operation.
System prevents wire saw slippage by providing sufficient friction to turn idler spools even when turns of wire on spools do not provide sufficient friction. Low cost system is easily applied to existing equipment.

Magnetic storage wire counter design principles are given. Magnetic storage wire was coupled with two phase propagational driver in manual set counter shift register. Time delay between magnetic counter domain insertion and corresponding output pulse provides counting functions.
Chromium wire grid duplexer-polarizer for 10 micrometer carbon dioxide laser communication system is produced by depositing photo-resist film onto silicon substrate, grating by two collimated cadmium helium laser beams, covering of surface with thin chromium layer, and subsequent stripping of uncoated portion to expose etched wires.
The current status of development of refractory-wire-superalloy composites and the potential for their application to turbine blades in land-based power generation and advanced aircraft engines are reviewed. The data indicate that refractory-wire-superalloy composites have application as turbine blades at temperatures of 2200 F and above.
