Electrical Evaluation of RCA MWS5001D Random Access Memory, Volume 1

Electrical characterization and qualification tests were performed on the RCA MWS5001D, 1024 by 1-bit, CMOS, random access memory. Characterization tests were performed on five devices. The tests included functional tests, AC parametric worst case pattern selection test, determination of worst-case transition for setup and hold times and a series of schmoo plots. The qualification tests were performed on 32 devices and included a 2000 hour burn in with electrical tests performed at 0 hours and after 168, 1000, and 2000 hours of burn in. The tests performed included functional tests and AC and DC parametric tests. All of the tests in the characterization phase, with the exception of the worst-case transition test, were performed at ambient temperatures of 25, -55 and 125 C. The worst-case transition test was performed at 25 C. The preburn in electrical tests were performed at 25, -55, and 125 C. All burn in endpoint tests were performed at 25, -40, -55, 85, and 125 C.

FASOR - A second generation shell of revolution code

An integrated computer program entitled Field Analysis of Shells of Revolution (FASOR) currently under development for NASA is described. When completed, this code will treat prebuckling, buckling, initial postbuckling and vibrations under axisymmetric static loads as well as linear response and bifurcation under asymmetric static loads. Although these modes of response are treated by existing programs, FASOR extends the class of problems treated to include general anisotropy and transverse shear deformations of stiffened laminated shells. At the same time, a primary goal is to develop a program which is free of the usual problems of modeling, numerical convergence and ill-conditioning, laborious problem setup, limitations on problem size and interpretation of output. The field method is briefly described, the shell differential equations are cast in a suitable form for solution by this method and essential aspects of the input format are presented. Numerical results are given for both unstiffened and stiffened anisotropic cylindrical shells and compared with previously published analytical solutions.

Laser balancing demonstration on a high-speed flexible rotor

This paper describes a flexible rotor system used for two-plane laser balancing and an experimental demonstration of the laser material removal method for balancing. A laboratory test rotor was modified to accept balancing corrections using a laser metal removal method while the rotor is at operating speed. The laser setup hardware required to balance the rotor using two correction planes is described. The test rig optical configuration and a neodymium glass laser were assembled and calibrated for material removal rates. Rotor amplitudes before and after balancing, trial and correction weights, rotor speed during operation of laser, and balancing time were documented. The rotor was balanced through the first bending critical speed using the laser material removal procedure to apply trial weights and correction weights without stopping the rotor.

Application of tunable diode lasers as local oscillators in an Infrared Heterodyne Radiometer (IHR)

The utility of diode lasers as local oscillators (LOs) in a heterodyne receiver application was investigated. The CW power, spectral tunability, spectral stability, and spatial intensity distribution of the TDL outputs were measured. A tunable diode laser LO was incorporated into a laboratory Dicke-switched infrared heterodyne setup and used to measure radiometer sensitivity as well as spectroscopic characteristics of selected absorption lines of ammonia. The test results on one of the two tunable diode lasers are emphasized in an attempt to provide a comprehensive data package which may be useful for future planning purposes. The second tunable diode laser exhibits characteristics similar to the fully tested TDL with the exception that some changes in its performance characteristics as it was temperature cycled between room temperature and the operating temperature of approximately 50K occurred.

Scale model studies for establishing the flow patterns of a low-speed tunnel

Experiments were conducted in a model tunnel scaled down in a ratio of 1:24 from the full size prototype V/STOL tunnel at NASA Langley Research Center. The flow characteristics around the tunnel were studied and the location and causes of local flow separation and local recirculation were documented. The study of the interaction between the various components from which the tunnel is built, an experimental setup similar to the sequence of tunnel circuit components was constructed which enabled the various components to be tested either individually or in combination. The components were tested by the simple technique of blowing air through them, then measuring the velocity distribution at relevant sections.

Use of two-dimensional transmission photoelastic models to study stresses in double-lap bolted joints: Load transfer and stresses in the inner lap

The determination of the stress distribution in the inner lap of double-lap, double-bolt joints using photoelastic models of the joint is discussed. The principal idea is to fabricate the inner lap of a photoelastic material and to use a photoelastically sensitive material for the two outer laps. With this setup, polarized light transmitted through the stressed model responds principally to the stressed inner lap. The model geometry, the procedures for making and testing the model, and test results are described.

Measurement of external forces and torques on a large pointing system

Methods of measuring external forces and torques are discussed, in general and as applied to the Large Pointing System wind tunnel tests. The LPS tests were in two phases. The first test was a preliminary test of three models representing coelostat, heliostat, and on-gimbal telescope configurations. The second test explored the coelostat configuration in more detail. The second test used a different setup for measuring external loads. Some results are given from both tests.

Holographic flow visualization at NASA Langley

Holographic flow visualization systems at two NASA Langley facilities, a hypersonic blow-down tunnel using CF4 gas and an expansion tube with very short test time, are described. A pulsed ruby laser is used at a CF4 tunnel for single pulse holography, double pulse with several minutes between exposures, and dual plate holographic interferometry. Shadowgraph, schlieren, and interferograms are reconstructed from the holograms in a separate reconstruction lab. At the expansion tube the short run time of 200 microseconds requires precise triggering of its double pulsed ruby laser. With double pulse capability of 20 to 1200 microseconds pulse separation, one pulse can occur before and one later after flow is established to obtain fringe free background interferograms (perfect infinite fringe) or both pulses can occur during flow in order to study flow instabilities. Holograms are reconstructed at the expansion tube with an in-place setup which makes use of a high power CW Argon laser and common optics for both recording and reconstructing the holograms. The holographic systems at the CF4 tunnel and expansion tube are operated routinely for flow visualization by tunnel technicians. Typical flow visualization photographs from both facilities are presented.

Exploratory investigation of the effects of vortex bursting on the high angle-of-attack lateral-directional stability characteristics of highly-swept wings

A recent low-speed wind-tunnel investigation of highly-swept wings has shown that vortex breakdown at high angles of attack can cause large destabilizing effects on static lateral-directional stability characteristics, and that the destabilizing effects of vortex breakdown can be greatly aggravated by model support strut interference effects. The present paper discusses these effects based on the results of static force tests of several highly-swept wing configurations for different wind-tunnel strut setup arrangements. Also included in the paper are photographs obtained during tuft-, smoke-, and helium-bubble flow visualization studies to indicate wing flow behavior patterns

Comparison of the early stages of condensation of Cu and Ag on Mo/100/ with Cu and Ag on W/100/

The adsorption and condensation of Cu and Ag, up to several monolayers in thickness, onto Mo(100) has been observed at pressures below 2 times 10 to the -10th torr in a study that used combined LEED, Auger, TDS (Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy), and work function measurements in a single experimental setup. The results show that Cu behaves similarly on Mo(100) and W(100) substrates, while some differences are found for Ag adsorption.
