A Memory Efficient Lock-Free Circular Queue

Hardware queues are import in many applications, such as data transfer, synchronization of concurrent modules with the need of mutual exclusion constructs. State of the art bounded (of a fixed size) lock free circular queues are implemented either by read/write atomic operations, or barrier conditions, or by separating dequeue and enqueue operations. However, these queues always require an unused element at all the times to safe-guard the front and rear pointers of the queue, so as to avoid data race conditions, which leads to the waste of memory. The waste of memory is especially disadvantageous in applications such as I/O data transfer, and image transfer between processing filters, when large element size is needed, We propose a lock-free solution of the bounded circular queue through read/write atomic operations, but without the need of an extra element in the queue. The proposed solution is implemented and verified in both Verilog and ’C’ languages. We also demonstrate its effectiveness by comparing its area and delay metrics with the implementations of other existing designs of queue.

Sensitivity Study of Mini-Batch Size on a Long Short-Term Memory Network for In-situ Sensing of Core-to-shell Ratio of Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials

Microencapsulated phase change materials are being studied for applications for thermal energy storage in concentrated solar fields. During fabrication, the thickness of the encapsulation cannot be readily measured for real-time control. Therefore, a machine learning network, specifically a Long Short-Term Memory network, is being developed to estimate the ratio of the shell radius to core radius based on a one second temperature history. The mini-batch size determines how often the algorithm weights are updated during network training, and shuffle indicates whether the training data is shuffled during training. A general factorial design is used to analyze the effects of varying mini-batch size and shuffle, along with the core-to-shell ratio, on the RMSE of the response from the Long Short-Term Memory network. It was found that the network performed better for smaller core to shell ratios (less than 0.6) and had the lowest RMSE when the minibatch size was 128. The minimum RMSE found was 0.00501.

Generative memory for lifelong machine learning

Techniques are disclosed for training machine learning systems. An input device receives training data comprising pairs of training inputs and training labels. A generative memory assigns training inputs to each archetype task of a plurality of archetype tasks, each archetype task representative of a cluster of related tasks within a task space and assigns a skill to each archetype task. The generative memory generates, from each archetype task, auxiliary data comprising pairs of auxiliary inputs and auxiliary labels. A machine learning system trains a machine learning model to apply a skill assigned to an archetype task to training and auxiliary inputs assigned to the archetype task to obtain output labels corresponding to the training and auxiliary labels associated with the training and auxiliary inputs assigned to the archetype task to enable scalable learning to obtain labels for new tasks for which the machine learning model has not previously been trained.

Panel Session 24B: Records, Knowledge, and Memory for Radioactive Waste Repositories: Generational Equity Focus

This panel focused on the latest thoughts, ideas, and methodologies being explored throughout the world on how to communicate with future generations regarding nuclear waste disposal. Scientists determined many years ago that geological disposal in a repository was the preferred solution for nuclear waste disposal given the longevity concerns of the waste(s). Future generations must be informed through records, memory keeping and permanent markers to ensure they are aware of, and knowledgeable of, the dangers associated with nuclear waste isolated from the biosphere. Total-Ionizing-Dose Effects on Read Noise of MLC 3-D NAND Memories T

This paper analyzes the total ionizing dose (TID) effects on noise characteristics of commercial multi-level-cell (MLC) 3-D NAND memory technology during the read operation. Additionally, the chips were exposed to a Co-60 gamma-ray source for up to 100 krad(Si) of TID. We find that the number of noisy cells in the irradiated chip increases with TID. Bit-flip noise was more dominant for cells in an erased state during irradiation compared to programmed cells.

Particle Track Classification Using Quantum Associative Memory (Final Technical Report)

This project explored the use of quantum-assisted algorithms for pattern matching in sub-atomic physics experiments. Pattern matching algorithms are commonly employed to prune data of random noise and to help discriminate between signals generated by particle tracks of interest and signals generated by background events. The quantum-assisted algorithms explored in this project were based on an Ising formulation of quantum associative model (QAMM) recall and quantum content-addressable memory (QCAM) recall. The recall is performed by comparing a probe pattern with those stored in a library of patterns encoded in the QAMM/QCAM model. The classification accuracy of QAMM and QCAM recall was determined as a function of detector resolution, noise, and efficiency and pattern density, where pattern density is defined as the ratio of the number of reference signal patterns encoded in the library to each pattern’s length. We found that QAMM achieved high classification accuracy when applied to datasets with low pattern density. QCAM achieved high classification accuracy for datasets with high pattern density and was found to be more robust to detector noise. The project methodology and results are described in detail in our arXiv preprint (arXiv:2011.11848) . This project was conducted by scientists at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory from August 2018 to August 2020 and was supported by DOE grant DE-SC0019497.

Rapid Memory Footprint Access Diagnostics

Footprint and reuse distance measure temporal locality and therefore do not capture the significance of access patterns (spacial locality). A strided access pattern has the largest possible footprint but usually has the best performance. To highlight exposed memory latency, we separate footprint into strided (prefetchable) and irregular (non-prefetchable) access components and calculate the growth rate of each. To rapidly compute these footprint access diagnostics, we present two methods, whole-program and precise. Current footprint analyses can cause 200× or more slowdown with realistic inputs and are therefore impractical. Our whole-program method reduces the overhead to 10% by computing upper bounds, but still yields inter-procedural insight through a call path profile. Our precise method uses additional static analysis and profiling to refine the upper bounds for intra-procedural loop nests. We evaluate our approaches using benchmarks that vary access patterns (strided \vs unpredictable), sparsity (all words in a cache line \vs some), and reuse (varying and repeated accesses per element). Notably, for loop nests with unpredictable accesses, the precise method's accuracy is within 10% of ideal. The whole-program method has sufficient accuracy to diagnose bottlenecks.

Phase‐Change‐Memory Process at the Limit: A Proposal for Utilizing Monolayer Sb 2 Te 3

Abstract One central task of developing nonvolatile phase change memory (PCM) is to improve its scalability for high‐density data integration. In this work, by first‐principles molecular dynamics, to date the thinnest PCM material possible (0.8 nm), namely, a monolayer Sb 2 Te 3 , is proposed. Importantly, its SET (crystallization) process is a fast one‐step transition from amorphous to hexagonal phase without the usual intermediate cubic phase. An increased spatial localization of electrons due to geometrical confinement is found to be beneficial for keeping the data nonvolatile in the amorphous phase at the 2D limit. The substrate and superstrate can be utilized to control the phase change behavior: e.g., with passivated SiO 2 (001) surfaces or hexagonal Boron Nitride, the monolayer Sb 2 Te 3 can reach SET recrystallization in 0.54 ns or even as fast as 0.12 ns, but with unpassivated SiO 2 (001), this would not be possible. Besides, working with small volume PCM materials is also a natural way to lower power consumption. Therefore, the proposed PCM working process at the 2D limit will be an important potential strategy of scaling the current PCM materials for ultrahigh‐density data storage.

Parallel projection—An improved return mapping algorithm for finite element modeling of shape memory alloys

Here, we present a novel finite element analysis of inelastic structures containing Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs). Phenomenological constitutive models for SMAs lead to material nonlinearities, that require substantial computational effort to resolve. Finite element analysis methods, which rely on Gauss quadrature integration schemes, must solve two sets of coupled differential equations: one at the global level and the other at the local, i.e. Gauss point level. In contrast to the conventional return mapping algorithm, which solves these two sets of coupled differential equations separately using a nested Newton procedure, we propose a scheme to solve the local and global differential equations simultaneously. In the process we also derive closed-form expressions used to update the internal/constitutive state variables, and unify the popular closest-point and cutting plane methods with our formulas. Numerical testing indicates that our method allows for larger thermomechanical loading steps and provides increased computational efficiency, over the standard return mapping algorithm.

On the elastocaloric effect in CuAlBe shape memory alloys: A quantitative phase-field modeling approach

We report the reversible stress-induced phase transformation in shape memory alloys (SMAs) is a dissipative process during which heat is absorbed or released. The inherent temperature variations inside the material has an elastocaloric effect (eCE) with appealing applications in solid-state cooling technology such as compact and efficient on-board refrigeration system for eletronic devices. In this manuscript, we conduct the first study of eCE of CuAlBe SMAs utilizing phase-field modeling. For an applied stress of 500 MPa, the results for polycrystalline Cu-Al11-2Be (at. %) show a minimum adiabatic unloading temperature change of -10 K over a pseudoelastic window of 40 K. In the absence of plastic deformation, the material demonstrates good reproducibility of the eCE over a few loading–unloading cycles. The presence of plastic deformation is found to cause functional fatigue that deteriorates the cooling capacity; however, the coefficient of performance only decreases from 9.04 to 8.03, which is still a very good value. These results place CuAlBe as a frontrunner SMA for solid-state cooling compared to the expensive NiTi.

PET waste- and bio-derived imine vitrimers for shape-memory, intrinsic flame-retardant, and recyclable carbon fiber composites

Developing circular multifunctional vitrimers and carbon fiber–reinforced polymers (CFRPs) that are simultaneously recyclable, mechanically robust, and intrinsically flame retardant remains a major challenge. Here, in this study, we report multifunctional vitrimers and their carbon fiber–reinforced vitrimer (CFRV) composites, where the vitrimer design integrates closed-loop recyclability, enhanced interfacial adhesion, and intrinsic flame retardancy within a single materials platform. The vitrimer matrix is synthesized from post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste and a vanillin-derived phosphorus-containing crosslinker, forming an imine-based network. The resulting vitrimer resin exhibits high tensile strength, thermal healability, repeated reprocessability, programmable shape memory, and rapid chemical depolymerization under mild conditions. Amine-functionalized carbon fibers significantly improve fiber–matrix interfacial bonding, yielding CFRVs with tensile strengths up to 789 MPa and complete recovery of structurally intact fibers after chemical recycling. The phosphorus-rich aromatic network further imparts intrinsic flame retardancy, enabling self-extinguishing behavior without external additives. This work advances a materials design paradigm for next-generation multifunctional, sustainable vitrimers and CFRVs, while simultaneously addressing the recycling challenges associated with both plastic and CFRP waste.
