Emergent Inductance from Chiral Orbital Currents in a Bulk Ferrimagnet

Here, we report the discovery of a new form of inductance in the bulk ferrimagnet Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6 , which features strong spin-orbit coupling, large magnetic anisotropy, and pronounced magnetoelastic interactions. Below its Curie temperature (𝑇 𝐶 ≈ 78 K), Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6 hosts chiral orbital currents (COC) that circulate within the crystal lattice and give rise to collective electronic behavior [Control of chiral orbital currents in a colossal magnetoresistance material, Nature (London) 611, 467 (2022).]. By applying a magnetic field along the hard 𝑐 axis and driving the system with low-frequency currents, we uncover a giant inductive response up to millhenry scale, originating from first-order reconfigurations of COC domains. These domains act as coherent mesoscopic inductive elements that resist reversal upon current reduction, producing a large electromotive force and sharply increasing voltage. This emergent inductance defies classical models, occurs without superconductivity or engineered nanostructures, and opens a new frontier in orbital-based quantum functionality and device concepts.

Constant Frequency ZVS PWM Converter

In this paper, a simple yet novel buck or boost adaptive zero-voltage switching (ZVS) converter topology is proposed for soft switching pulse-width modulation (PWM) dc / dc converters. The converter is designed for the high switching frequency that can achieve high efficiency by reducing switching losses for the entire load range at low and high power. Besides, the output at the load terminals is maintained by a PWM signal at a fixed switching frequency, a phase shift signal between converter ports (legs) controls the system circulating current in order to provide the ZVS condition in all load conditions. With the proposed controller, the converter, thus, is suitable for high switching frequency and high-power applications with the small volume. The proposed dc / dc converter operation is analyzed, designed, and confirmed by simulation results for 240 V input, 400 V / 5 A output, and 200 kHz operating frequency at full load.

Controlling the dopant profile for SRH suppression at low current densities in λ ≈ 1330 nm GaInAsP light-emitting diodes

The quantum efficiency of double hetero-junction light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be significantly enhanced at low current density by tailoring the spatial profile of dopants to suppress Shockley–Read–Hall recombination. To demonstrate this effect, we model, design, grow, fabricate, and test a GaInAsP LED (λ≈ 1330 nm) with an unconventional dopant profile. Compared against that of our control design, which is a conventional n + -n - p + double hetero-junction LED, the dopant profile near the n - p + hetero-structure of the design displaces the built-in electric field in such a way that the J 02 space charge recombination current is suppressed. The design principle generalizes to other material systems and could be applicable to efforts to observe and exploit electro-luminescent refrigeration at practical power densities.

The effect of temperature oscillations on energy storage rectification in harmonic systems

Abstract Rectification, the preferential transport of a current in one direction through a system, has garnered significant attention in molecules because of its importance for controlling thermal and electronic currents at the nanoscale. Here, we report the presence of energy storage rectification effects in a molecular chain. This phenomenon is generated by subjecting a harmonic molecular chain to an oscillating temperature gradient and showing that the energy absorption rate of the system depends on the direction of the gradient. We examine how the energy storage rectification ratios in the chain are affected by the oscillating gradient, asymmetry in the chain, and the system parameters. We find that energy storage rectification can be observed in harmonic lattice structures with time-dependent temperatures and that, correspondingly, anharmonicity is not required to generate this rectification mechanism in such systems.

Enabling Grid-Forming Control with Fault Ride-Through in Unbalanced Distribution Networks

Distribution networks are often unbalanced, causing oscillatory responses in inverter control designed for balanced conditions. Here, to address this problem, this paper proposes a novel time-domain transformation appropriate for inverter control and enables the decomposition of three-phase unbalanced signals into constant positive and negative components. Relations useful for calculating unbalanced active and reactive power are derived from first principle, providing insight into vector products of unbalanced three-phase signals. Furthermore, a grid-forming control effective under unbalanced conditions is developed, which delivers superior performance while meeting UNIFI1 specifications for grid-forming control under unbalanced conditions. specifications applicable to category 4 inverter-based resource, like setting and regulating frequency/voltage, providing voltage support, sharing active power, injecting negative sequence current, and riding through faults. A current limiter is proposed for safe fault ride-through and integrates with the grid-forming control featuring frequency/voltage droop controllers and current and voltage control loops. The transformation of interconnected inverters is formulated and stability of the proposed control analyzed to support robust parameter selections. The effectiveness of the proposed transformation and grid-forming control is demonstrated through analytical results and real-time simulation of a IEEE 123 distribution network on the Real-Time Digital Simulator. Comparison with existing methods shows that the proposed strategy satisfies the UNIFI specifications with a much better performance.

Viability of Cathodic Protection for Preventing Corrosion of Stainless Steel 316H in Molten LiF-NaF-KF

Molten fluoride salts are candidate heat transfer fluids in a number of applications such as generation IV molten salt nuclear reactors and concentrated solar power plants. However, a chief concern in the design of these systems is the corrosion of structural materials that come in contact with these molten salts. Redox control methods such as the purification of salt, the addition of active elements, and applied electrochemical potential can be efficient methods for preventing the corrosion of structural materials in molten fluoride salts. Applied electrochemical potential as a redox control method for application in molten fluoride salts has rarely been explored. This study seeks to understand the viability of impressed current cathodic protection (CP) at various currents as a redox control method to prevent corrosion of stainless steel 316H in molten LiF-NaF-KF (FLiNaK) salt. Results show that application of CP can be an effective method to prevent corrosion of SS316H in molten FLiNaK salt, but the applied current will have to be optimized to prevent undesirable side effects such as reduction of salt constituents, salt deposition on electrodes, etc.

Connected Traffic Signal Coordination Optimization Framework through Network-Wide Adaptive Linear Quadratic Regulator–Based Control Strategy

Traffic congestion in metropolitan areas causes several significant challenges, such as longer travel times, decreased productivity, increased fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, and even severe injuries during crashes. Traffic signal control is a management approach to reduce traffic congestion and allocate the appropriate right of way for safety and mobility efficiency, both in temporal and spatial domains. Here, this study proposes a network-wide adaptive signal control coordination optimization framework based on the linear quadratic regulator algorithm. The traffic flow conditions driven by signal control inputs are formulated based on their network-wide state-space representation. After modeling traffic control regulation constraints, an adaptive linear quadratic regulator algorithm is designed to maximize the network-wide total throughput under the current conditions. Optimal signal control split time durations for multiple intersections in the network are derived by solving the algebraic Riccati equation. Furthermore, the recursive least square parameter estimation method is employed to quantify dynamic traffic condition changes. To verify the effectiveness of this proposed signal control framework, both simulation and real-world experimental tests are conducted for multiple intersections in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States. In preparation for real-world experimental tests, pipelines for real-time data processing implementation and historical traffic flow data analysis are conducted. The test results demonstrate that the proposed control framework achieves a decrease in travel time by up to 19.4%, total time spent (TTS) by up to 11.9%, and relative queue balance (RQB) by up to 15.6%. The research findings indicate that the proposed signal control framework can be generalized to handle large scale signal control optimization network-wide.

Physics-Based Analysis of Cell Imbalances and Aging in Lithium-Ion Battery Modules and Packs

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) packs are a key solution for grid-scale energy storage, enabling grid resilience and supporting critical infrastructure. LIB modules and packs experience current imbalances and uneven cell aging due to various design and operational factors, and require a battery management system (BMS) to continuously monitor and control. In this context, a physics-based modeling framework for LIB modules and packs (liionpack) was enhanced to identify design and control strategies that minimize current imbalance and improve module/pack operation. Simulations of an 8-cell parallel-connected module demonstrate that reducing current imbalance leads to more uniform cell aging and improved module/pack-level degradation predictions. The analysis shows that current imbalance are affected by the electrical resistances. Terminal location significantly affects imbalance, with opposite-end terminal connections at intermediate branches minimizing the imbalance, and the pack circuit construction influences the accuracy of physics-based analysis at the pack scale. This framework enables design optimization of modules and packs through a fast and easy evaluation of pack performance and aging, and supports the development of aging-informed balancing strategies compatible with BMS implementation. Thereby, offering practical pathways to improve reliability and cycle life predictions in large-scale battery energy storage systems.

Temperature-Dependent Transport Characteristics of 2D MoS2 Channel FETs Grown Using Salt-Based Precursors

D Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), particularly MoS2, are promising candidates for sub-10 nm Gate All Around (GAA) CMOS FETs. Salt-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) enable lateral MoS2 growth at atmospheric pressure and low temperatures. This work analyzes salt-based precursor-driven CVD-grown MoS2 FETs at various temperatures. MoS2 was grown using Ammonium Molybdate salt, sulfurized at 750∘C, and transferred onto p−Si3/SiO2 substrates. At room temperature, threshold voltage (VT) ranged from -35 V to -25 V, with a peak drain current of 1.2μA/μm. As temperature increased above 325K, VT shifted exponentially, and carrier mobility dropped significantly. At 400 K, the gate lost channel control, though gate leakage current remained low. These results are compared with non-salt-based MoS2 growth to assess salt precursor effects.Notice: This manuscript has been authored by UT-Battelle, LLC, under contract DE-AC05-00OR22725 with the US Department of Energy (DOE). An Inrush Current Limit Method for SiC-based Multi-level Grid-connected Converter During Low-Voltage Ride-Through

Low-voltage ride-through is one of the grid requirements for grid-connected converters, and during the transient of grid voltage change, a large inrush current could be induced due to the control delay of the converter. This inrush current is more severe in SiC-based multi-level converters due to the small filter inductance, which is selected based on harmonics consideration. In this paper, a PWM mask method is used to limit the inrush current of a cascaded H-bridge-based grid-connected converter during the transient of grid voltage change. Simulation and experiment results are provided to validate this method.

Characterizing HVDC Transmission Flexibility under Extreme Operating Conditions

System operators rely on system flexibility, traditionally mainly from generation, to handle unexpected reliability and resilience events, ranging from excessive resource forecast errors to extreme events like heatwaves, earthquakes, and cyberattacks. Flexible transmission, such as controllable high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems present an opportunity to increase overall system flexibility to accommodate operational challenges. This paper provides a methodology to study contributions to system flexibility by controllable, power electronics based transmission. The Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system is used as an example to study contributions from existing and future HVDC lines. Under extreme system conditions, it is identified that HVDC transmission flexibility can contribute with 24.8 to 28% of avoided unserved energy, and in some areas, the benefits amount to 50 to 70%.

Enhancement of ECCD by the current condensation effect for stabilizing large magnetic islands caused by neoclassical tearing modes in tokamak plasmas

The radio frequency current condensation effect reported in Reiman and Fisch (2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 121 225001) is modeled in the nonlinear resistive magnetohydrodynamic code. A series of numerical investigations have been performed to investigate the enhancement of electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) by the current condensation effect during the control of neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) in tokamak plasmas. In the numerical model, both the parallel transport and the perpendicular transport of electron temperature are considered. The EC driven current and driven perturbed electron temperature can nonlinearly evolve within the given magnetic configuration and eventually reach saturation states. The input power threshold of ECCD and the fold bifurcation phenomenon are numerically verified via nonlinear simulations. The numerical results show good agreements with the analytical results. Moreover, spatial distributions of EC current for the two solutions at different condensed level are displayed. The control effectiveness of ECCD for large NTM islands has been evaluated while considering the current condensation effect. While taking into account current condensation effect, for a sufficiently large input power, a larger island can be more effectively stabilized than a smaller one, which suggests a reassessment of the previous idea that the ECCD should always be turned on as early as possible. The potential physics mechanism behind the ECCD control have all been discussed in detail. Furthermore, the condensation effect is found to have favorable effects on the radial misalignment of ECCD. In the consideration of the situation for extremely localized control needs, a highly peaked heating profile is adopted to verify that the fold bifurcation phenomenon still exists and the current condensation effect can still take effect in this extreme condition.

Robust Adaptive Control for Large-scale Inverter-based Resources with Partial and Complete Loss of Inverters

This article proposes an approach to address the current and the aggregated active power control challenge for large-scale inverter-based resources subjected to partially or completely loss of inverters and grid voltage variations. To address this problem, a distributed active power mechanism is proposed which generates desired inverters current. Then an adaptive mechanism distributes the voltage control input automatically between inverters in response to the partial or complete loss of inverters. An L2-gain-based controller is designed for each inverter to track the desired current and rejects the grid voltage disturbance. Here, simulation results show a significant robust tracking for collective active power and current.
