Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS)-Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) Merged Size Distribution (mergedsmpsaps) Value-Added Product Report

Aerosol particles influence the Earth’s radiation balance directly by absorbing and scattering light and indirectly by influencing cloud formation, properties, and lifetimes. Measurements of aerosol particle optical properties, mass loading, size distributions, microphysical properties, cloud formation properties, and chemical composition are important for understanding the aerosol life cycle and for validating earth system models that predict these quantities. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Aerosol Observing System (AOS) is a highly instrumented platform designed to house instruments that measure many of these aerosol properties in situ. Currently, ARM operates at least four different instruments that measure a portion of the ambient aerosol size distribution. Most users are interested in the entire size distribution or a portion of the size distribution that extends across the measurement range of multiple instruments. However, merging these distributions is not trivial as the instruments employ different measurement principals and, in most cases, report data as a function of different representations of the aerosol diameter.

Meteoroids from periodic comet d'Arrest

The predicted anomalous tail of periodic comet d'Arrest was photographed and photometrically studied. The derived particle-size distribution function varies inversely according to slightly higher than the 4-th power of the size. Particle dimensions span a few orders of magnitude, the mean size being in the general range of 0.01 to 0.1 cm depending on the assumed bulk density. The determination of the amount of the ejected dust is complicated by large uncertainties in the particle albedo. The product of the particle albedo and of the production rate of meteoroids that remain gravitationally bound to the solar system is found to be about 3000 g/s at the time of maximum activity and some 200 g/s when averaged over the comet's revolution period. The contribution of the comet to the interplanetary dust cloud is insignificant, unless the albedo of the debris from the comet is as low as 0.1 percent.

Fine-tuning of process conditions to improve product uniformity of polystyrene particles used for wind tunnel velocimetry

Monodisperse polymer particles (having uniform diameter) were used for the last two decades in physical, biological, and chemical sciences. In NASA Langley Research Center monodisperse polystyrene particles are used in wind tunnel laser velocimeters. These polystyrene (PS) particles in latex form were formulated at the Engineering Laboratory of FENGD using emulsion-free emulsion polymerization. Monodisperse PS latices particles having different particle diameters were formulated and useful experimental data involving effects of process conditions on particle size were accumulated. However, similar process conditions and chemical recipes for polymerization of styrene monomer have often yielded monodisperse particles having varying diameters. The purpose was to improve the PS latex product uniformity by fine-tuning the process parameters based on the knowledge of suspension and emulsion polymerization.

Microscopic calculation of fission product yields with particle-number projection

Fission fragments' charge and mass distribution is an important input to applications ranging from basic science to energy production or nuclear nonproliferation. In simulations of nucleosynthesis or calculations of superheavy elements, these quantities must be computed from models, as they are needed in nuclei where no experimental information is available. Until now, standard techniques to estimate these distributions were not capable of accounting for fine-structure effects, such as the odd-even staggering of the charge distributions. In this work, we combine a fully microscopic collective model of fission dynamics with a recent extension of the particle number projection formalism to provide the highest-fidelity prediction of the primary fission fragment distributions for the neutron-induced fission of 235 U and 239 Pu. Here, we show that particle-number projection is an essential ingredient to reproduce odd-even staggering in the charge yields and benchmark the performance of various empirical probability laws that could simulate its effect. This new approach also enables for the first time the realistic determination of two-dimensional isotopic yields within nuclear density functional theory.

Statistical Combination of ATLAS Run 2 Searches for Charginos and Neutralinos at the LHC

Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139 fb −1 of 𝑝⁢𝑝 collision data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model 𝑊, 𝑍, or ℎ bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30–100 GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.L. cross-section upper limits by 15%–40%.

EPMA-Based Mass Balance Method for Quantitative Fission Product Distribution Comparison between TRISO Particles

Two irradiated AGR-2 TRISO particles were chosen to demonstrate a recently developed mass balance technique in which EPMA-generated concentration data was used to determine fission product mass on a layer-by-layer basis in TRISO particles. EPMA-calculated fission product masses for most fission products in the two particles were within +/- 20% of their ORIGEN-modelled masses. Results show that Sr, Ba, and Eu accumulate preferentially in the carbon-rich kernel periphery on the particles’ side that lacks a gap between the buffer and IPyC. In addition, the more mobile elements--Cs, Sr, and Pd, accumulate in greater quantity in the outer layers of particle AGR2-223-RS34 compared to particle AGR2-223-RS06, which has relatively more of those elements’ mass located in the kernel and kernel periphery, suggesting enhanced fission product transport in particle AGR2-223-RS34. This model can be used better understand and test fission product transport in TRISO particles.

Fiber-containing particles with dual-tapered shape

Recycled carbon fibers are processed by rotational tumbling in a mixture with binder material to prepare fiber-containing particles having a dual-tapered shape and general alignment of fibers with a longitudinal direction of the particles. Bulk products including such fiber-containing particles are compounded with polymer and pelletized to prepare fiber-reinforced composite pellets, which are useful for applications such as injection molding to prepare molded products of carbon fiber-reinforced composite material with recycled carbon fibers.

First measurement of 𝑎$^{0}_{2}$⁡(1320) polarized photoproduction cross section

We measure for the first time the differential photoproduction cross section dσ/dt of the a 2 (1320) meson at an average photon beam energy of 8.5 GeV, using data with an integrated luminosity of 104 pb −1 collected by the GlueX experiment. We fully reconstruct the γp → ηπ 0 p reaction and perform a partial-wave analysis in the a 2 (1320) mass region with amplitudes that incorporate the linear polarization of the beam. This allows us to separate for the first time the contributions of natural- and unnatural-parity exchanges. Furthermore, these measurements provide novel information about the photoproduction mechanism, which is critical for the search for spin-exotic states.

Electron-rich particle events and the production of gamma-rays by solar flares

The abundance of electrons of 5-50 MeV energies relative to protons of similar energy has been determined in a total of 49 particle events of apparently solar origin during the year 1980. Most events with high electron abundances appear to have been produced by flares which also produced observable fluxes of gamma-rays. The overall distribution of abundances is consistent with that measured in 1968-1970 at similar energies, but is systematically lower in electron content than abundance distributions measured at lower energies. Electron-rich particle events have harder electron spectra than more normal events, and are never accompanied by strong interplanetary shocks. Therefore, an investigation is conducted to decide whether observations are consistent with models in which energetic particles are accelerated by a shock produced at the flare site. It is concluded that, in such models, the variable nature of the interplanetary particle events must reflect some fundamental but variable property of the shocks - possibly their direction of propagation. An outward moving shock may produce a particle event in interplanetary space whereas a shock directed toward the sun may produce a flux of particles in the lower solar atmosphere which generate the gamma-radiation.

Nuclear cold QCD: Review and future strategy

This review examines data from hadron-nucleus collisions, primarily focusing on hard processes like Drell-Yan, heavy flavor, and quarkonium production. It highlights observed modifications of particle yields as functions of momentum and rapidity, aiming to clarify the underlying QCD effects on cold nuclear matter. It outlines strategies for future experiments, including the Electron-Ion Collider, to distinguish between these effects. Key questions address the universality of suppression mechanisms and the role of nonperturbative physics, providing a road map for upcoming measurements of hadrons on nuclei.

Onset of runaway nucleation in aerosol reactors

The onset of homogeneous nucleation of new particles from the products of gas phase chemical reactions was explored using an aerosol reactor in which seed particles of silicon were grown by silane pyrolysis. The transition from seed growth by cluster deposition to catastrophic nucleation was extremely abrupt, with as little as a 17 percent change in the reactant concentration leading to an increase in the concentration of measurable particles of four orders of magnitude. From the structure of the particles grown near this transition, it is apparent that much of the growth occurs by the accumulation of clusters on the growing seed particles. The time scale for cluster diffusion indicates, however, that the clusters responsible for growth must be much smaller than the apparent fine structure of the product particles.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle b-jet production in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV

A measurement of the inclusive b-jet production cross section is presented in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, using data collected with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The jets were reconstructed in the central rapidity region |η| < 0.5 from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.4. Identification of b jets exploits the long lifetime of b hadrons, using the properties of secondary vertices and impact parameter distributions. The p T -differential inclusive production cross section of b jets, as well as the corresponding inclusive b-jet fraction, are reported for pp and p-Pb collisions in the jet transverse momentum range 10 ≤ p T,ch jet ≤ 100 GeV/c, together with the nuclear modification factor, $R^{b-jet}_{pPb}$. The analysis thus extends the lower p T limit of b-jet measurements at the LHC. The nuclear modification factor is found to be consistent with unity, indicating that the production of b jets in p-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is not affected by cold nuclear matter effects within the current precision. The measurements are well reproduced by POWHEG NLO pQCD calculations with PYTHIA fragmentation.

The São Paulo Potential and the 3 He Breakup Reaction at 130 MeV on 93 Nb and 197 Au

Nuclear reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei often result in the emission of light particles as products of the projectile breakup. The incident particle is expected to fragment before reaching the interior of the target nuclei, a characteristic that tends to favor forward angular emission. Although the first models developed for such reactions were proposed many decades ago by Udagawa and Tamura, Ichimura, Austern, Vincent, and Kasano, and Hussein and McVoy, to this date most of the attention has been dedicated to the breakup of the deuteron and other very weakly bound systems, while more strongly bound projectiles have not been fully explored. Here, we describe the production of protons and deuterons from the breakup of 3He. The breakup of 3 He on two heavy targets, 93 Nb and 197 Au, is analyzed in this study. However, the incoming energy involved is much larger than that of the standard phenomenological optical potentials available in the literature for the 3He entrance channel. We have overcome this difficulty by using the São Paulo potential and adjusting the nuclear diffusivity. The deuteron inclusive spectra were calculated at several angles and compared well with the experimental data. Theoretical proton emission predictions are also given for future reference, since no inclusive measurements were performed for the targets under study. Finally, one of our goals is to verify the description of deuteron emission from fast projectiles, for which many partial waves contribute to the scattering process.

Effect of Ni particle size on the production of renewable methane from CO 2 over Ni/CeO 2 catalyst

Production of ‘renewable Methane’ has attracted renewed research interest as a fundamental probe reaction and process for CO 2 utilization through potential use in C1 fuel production and even for future space exploration technologies. CO 2 methanation is a structure sensitive reaction on Ni/CeO 2 catalysts. To precisely elucidate the size effect of the Ni metal center on the CO 2 methanation performance, we prepared 2%Ni/CeO 2 catalysts with pre-synthesized uniform Ni particles (2, 4 and 8 nm) on a high surface area CeO 2 support. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ambient pressure X-ray photo spectroscopy (AP-XPS) characterization have confirmed that the catalyst structure and chemical state was uniform and stable under reaction conditions. The 8 nm sized catalyst showed superior methanation selectivity over the 4 and 2 nm counterparts, and the methanation activity in term of TOF is 10 times and 70 times higher than for the 4 and 2 nm counterparts, respectively. Here, the DRIFTS studies revealed that the larger Ni (8 nm particles) over CeO 2 efficiently facilitated the hydrogenation of the surface formate intermediates, which is proposed as the rate determining step accounting for the excellent CO 2 methanation performance.
