All-Optical Micro Motors Based on Moving Gratings in Photosensitive Media

An all-optical micro motor with a rotor driven by a traveling wave of surface deformation of a stator being in contact with the rotor is being studied. Instead of an ultrasonic wave produced by an electrically driven piezoelectric actuator as in ultrasonic motors, the wave is a result of a photo induced surface deformation of a photosensitive material produced by a traveling holographic grating. Two phase modulated coherent optical beams generate the grating. Several types of photosensitive materials are studied such as photorefractive crystals, photosensitive piezoelectric ceramics, and side-chain liquid crystalline polyesters. In order to be considered as a possible candidate for micro motors, the material should exhibit surface deformation produced by moving grating of the order of 10 micron. Deformations produced by static holographic gratings are studied in photorefractive crystals of LiNbO3 using high vertical resolution surface profilometer Dektak 3 and surface interferometer WYKO. An experimental set-up with moving grating has been developed. The set-up uses a two-beam interferometry configuration with one beam being reflected by a thin mirror mounted on a loud speaker. A ramp voltage signal generator drives the speaker. Changing voltage, polarity, and frequency of the signal can easily generate vibrating gratings or moving gratings in both directions. A vibrating grating has been applied to a photorefractive crystal of BSO controlled by an external electric field of the order of 104 V/cm. We have additionally studied effects of moving grating interaction with light absorbing fluids such as solutions of 2,9,16,23-Tetrakis(phenylthio)-29H, 31 Hphthalocyanine in chlorobenzene in capillary tubes. The purpose of using a liquid is to show that the moving gratings can force a liquid to shift. The interaction of a single low power focused laser beam at 633 nm with such fluid produced an intensive circular motion, which also might be applied to all-optical micro motors or actuators.

Optical Tweezers and Optical Trapping Improved for Future Automated Micromanipulation and Characterization

Optical trap arrays are being developed at the NASA Glenn Research Center for holding, manipulating, and optically interrogating arrays of nanotube sensors. The trap arrays, for example, might be used to arrange arrays of chemical sensors for insertion onto a chip in liquid, air, and vacuum environments. Neural-network-controlled spatial light modulators (SLMs) are to generate and control the trap positions and trap profiles in three dimensions.

Multi-pixel high-resolution three-dimensional imaging radar

A three-dimensional imaging radar operating at high frequency e.g., 670 GHz radar using low phase-noise synthesizers and a fast chirper to generate a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) waveform, is disclosed that operates with a multiplexed beam to obtain range information simultaneously on multiple pixels of a target. A source transmit beam may be divided by a hybrid coupler into multiple transmit beams multiplexed together and directed to be reflected off a target and return as a single receive beam which is demultiplexed and processed to reveal range information of separate pixels of the target associated with each transmit beam simultaneously. The multiple transmit beams may be developed with appropriate optics to be temporally and spatially differentiated before being directed to the target. Temporal differentiation corresponds to a different intermediate frequencies separating the range information of the multiple pixels. Collinear transmit beams having differentiated polarizations may also be implemented.

Wireless Capacitive Pressure Sensor Operating up to 400 Celcius from 0 to 100 psi Utilizing Power Scavenging

In this paper, a wireless capacitive pressure sensor developed for the health monitoring of aircraft engines has been demonstrated. The sensing system is composed of a Clapp-type oscillator that operates at 131 MHz. The Clapp oscillator is fabricated on a alumina substrate and consists of a Cree SiC (silicon carbide) MESFET (Metal Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors), this film inductor, Compex chip capacitors and Sporian Microsystem capacitive pressure sensor. The resonant tank circuit within the oscillator is made up of the pressure sensor and a spiral thin film inductor, which is used to magnetically couple the wireless pressure sensor signal to a coil antenna placed over 1 meter away. 75% of the power used to bias the sensing system is generated from thermoelectric power modules. The wireless pressure sensor is operational at room temperature through 400 C from 0 to 100 psi and exhibits a frequency shift of over 600 kHz.

Long term behavior of silicon germanium thermoelectric generators

Results of tests of the long term performance of SiGe radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG) are presented. Three modules were monitored for 17,000-32,300 hr at hot junction temperatures of 1,085, 1,055, and 1,000 C; coating the unicouples with a 12,000 A thick layer of Si3N4 protected the modules from Si sublimation. Output degraded less than 0.3-0.4%/1,000 hr over the testing period. Life tests on a multihundredwatt (MHW) SiGe generator with 312 couples at a hot shoe temperature of 1,040 C dealt with power of 150 W at 30 V, with 0.5%/1,000 hr performance degradation. Si deposition on the insulation was found to enhance electrical conductance until a saturation point was reached. Disassembly of a test module after 16,750 hr revealed a Mo build-up, SiN4 coating deterioration, and Ti diffustion from the hot shoe to cooler regions of the junction. The presence of an Al2O3 insulator was recognized as preventing coating loss. Performance records from the Voyager and Les-8 satellites' RTG's are compared and show similar, 0.25%/1,000 hr degradation rates; RTG storage is judged to be feasible and the tests lead to projections of a 600,000 hr lifetime for a SiGe RTG.

Digital test signal generation: An accurate SNR calibration approach for the DSN

In support of the on-going automation of the Deep Space Network (DSN) a new method of generating analog test signals with accurate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is described. High accuracy is obtained by simultaneous generation of digital noise and signal spectra at the desired bandwidth (base-band or bandpass). The digital synthesis provides a test signal embedded in noise with the statistical properties of a stationary random process. Accuracy is dependent on test integration time and limited only by the system quantization noise (0.02 dB). The monitor and control as well as signal-processing programs reside in a personal computer (PC). Commands are transmitted to properly configure the specially designed high-speed digital hardware. The prototype can generate either two data channels modulated or not on a subcarrier, or one QPSK channel, or a residual carrier with one biphase data channel. The analog spectrum generated is on the DC to 10 MHz frequency range. These spectra may be up-converted to any desired frequency without loss on the characteristics of the SNR provided. Test results are presented.

Parametric Model of an Aerospike Rocket Engine

A suite of computer codes was assembled to simulate the performance of an aerospike engine and to generate the engine input for the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories. First an engine simulator module was developed that predicts the aerospike engine performance for a given mixture ratio, power level, thrust vectoring level, and altitude. This module was then used to rapidly generate the aerospike engine performance tables for axial thrust, normal thrust, pitching moment, and specific thrust. Parametric engine geometry was defined for use with the engine simulator module. The parametric model was also integrated into the iSIGHT multidisciplinary framework so that alternate designs could be determined. The computer codes were used to support in-house conceptual studies of reusable launch vehicle designs.

Operations analysis (study 2.1): Program manual and users guide for the LOVES computer code

Information is provided necessary to use the LOVES Computer Program in its existing state, or to modify the program to include studies not properly handled by the basic model. The Users Guide defines the basic elements assembled together to form the model for servicing satellites in orbit. As the program is a simulation, the method of attack is to disassemble the problem into a sequence of events, each occurring instantaneously and each creating one or more other events in the future. The main driving force of the simulation is the deterministic launch schedule of satellites and the subsequent failure of the various modules which make up the satellites. The LOVES Computer Program uses a random number generator to simulate the failure of module elements and therefore operates over a long span of time typically 10 to 15 years. The sequence of events is varied by making several runs in succession with different random numbers resulting in a Monte Carlo technique to determine statistical parameters of minimum value, average value, and maximum value.

Bgridi - Interactive three-dimensional turbomachinery grid generation system with applications

An interactive, graphics-based grid generation system for 3D turbomachinery geometries has been developed. The system consists of separate modules for geometry modeling and grid generation. The grid generation method generates a series of 2D grids in the blade-to-blade passage to build up the 3D grid. A Poisson equation with forcing functions selected to control orthogonality and spacing on all boundaries is solved to generate the grid. Interactive definition of Bezier curves and surfaces as internal boundaries is used to improve control of grid quality. A multi-block data structure simpifies the creation of structured H-grids about complex turbomachinery geometries. The multi-block strategy facilitates the creation of a grid in the tip flow region, which is an important contributor to losses within the passage. The grid generation system is applied to several complex geometries including a simple radial impeller, a conventional turbine rotor, the SSME LOX turbine rotor with and without a tip flow grid, a multi-passage inducer-impeller, and a tip-flow cascade. In addition, a calculation of the tip-flow cascade flow field is shown.

Solar Generator

The Vanguard I dish-Stirling module program, initiated in 1982, produced the Vanguard I module, a commercial prototype erected by the Advanco Corporation. The module, which automatically tracks the sun, combines JPL mirrored concentrator technology, an advanced Stirling Solar II engine/generator, a low cost microprocessor-controlled parabolic dish. Vanguard I has a 28% sunlight to electricity conversion efficiency. If tests continue to prove the system effective, Advanco will construct a generating plant to sell electricity to local utilities. An agreement has also been signed with McDonnell Douglas to manufacture a similar module.

Modeling Electro-Optic Frequency Comb Generation as a Pump Source for Quantum Communications

The Quantum Communications group at NASA GRC is focused on developing technologies and system architectures to enable future space-based quantum networks. High-repetition rate pulsed pump lasers are needed because the signal on the quantum channel cannot be amplified, hence entanglement generation rates can only be increased through high-rate pumping. Additionally, tunability in center frequency, pulse width, and repetition rate allows for a wider parameter space over which to optimize quantum channel frequency conversion efficiency, joint spectral engineering, and channel synchronization for high-fidelity entanglement swapping –a necessary stepping-stone towards quantum repeater development. One of the most flexible methods for high-repetition rate pulse generation is through spectral shaping–generating a frequency comb from a continuous-wave(CW)laser using electro-optic modulators (EOMs). As a result, this project focuses on analytically modeling and simulating the effects various EOMs such as phase and intensity modulators have on a CW source. Generating a tunable frequency comb as the pump source allows us to conveniently fine-tune the central frequency, repetition rate, and the spectral shape of our source to match the strict optimal parameters for any given entanglement source considered in the future. These models and simulations are to be used for comparison purposes for future experiments as well as for providing the Quantum Communications group a convenient tool to understand the effects of manipulating various parameters have on the outgoing frequency comb.

Field-effect Flow Control in Polymer Microchannel Networks

A new Bio-MEMS electroosmotic flow (EOF) modulator for plastic microchannel networks has been developed. The EOF modulator uses field-effect flow control (FEFC) to adjust the zeta potential at the Parylene C microchannel wall. By setting a differential EOF pumping rate in two of the three microchannels at a T-intersection with EOF modulators, the induced pressure at the intersection generated pumping in the third, field-free microchannel. The EOF modulators are able to change the magnitude and direction of the pressure pumping by inducing either a negative or positive pressure at the intersection. The flow velocity is tracked by neutralized fluorescent microbeads in the microchannels. The proof-of-concept of the EOF modulator described here may be applied to complex plastic ,microchannel networks where individual microchannel flow rates are addressable by localized induced-pressure pumping.

The application of photovoltaic roof shingles to residential and commercial buildings

The recent development of a shingle-type solar-cell module makes it possible to incorporate easily photovoltaic power generation into the sloping roofs of residential or commercial buildings. These modules, which use a closely packed array of nineteen 53-mm-diameter circular solar cells, are capable of producing 101 watts/sq m of module area under standard operating conditions. This module performance is achievable by the use of solar cells with an average efficiency of 13.3 percent at 1 kW/sq m air-mass-1.5 insolation and at a cell temperature of 28 C. When these modules are mounted on a sloping south-facing roof which is insulated on the rear surface, the annual energy generated at the maximum power operating point will vary from 255.6 to 137.3 kWh/sq m of module area depending on the site location, with Albuquerque, NM, and Seattle, WA, representing the highest and lowest values of the thirteen sites considered.

Wide-band analog frequency modulation of optic signals using indirect techniques

The wideband frequency modulation (FM) of an optical carrier by a radio frequency (RF) or microwave signal can be accomplished independent of laser type when indirect modulation is employed. Indirect modulators exploit the integral relation of phase to frequency so that phase modulators can be used to impress frequency modulation on an optical carrier. The use of integrated optics phase modulators, which are highly linear, enables the generation of optical wideband FM signals with very low intermodulation distortion. This modulator can be used as part of an optical wideband FM link for RF and microwave signals. Experimental results from the test of an indirect frequency modulator for an optical carrier are discussed.
