Two-Period Gratings For Surface-Emitting Lasers

Grating surfaces having two spatial periods tailored to obtain desired proportions of output coupling and inward reflection. Solid-state lasers of type emitting light perpendicularly to their broad surfaces made more efficient. Same principle also applicable to "Annular-Bragg-Grating Surface-Emitting Laser", (NPO-17912).

SIRTF/IRS cryogenic grating drive mechanism (ARC second positioning at 4 K)

The requirements, design, and test results of a grating drive mechanism for the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) science instrument on the proposed superfluid helium-cooled Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) are described. The IRS grating drive mechanism, tested in the fall of 1989, satisfied all performance requirements in vacuum at 4 K. Measured mechanism performance included: 1.4 arc sec root-mean-square (rms) error positioning resolution; 2.2 arc sec rms position repeatability error, less than 10 millijoules/deg dissipated power; and 170 deg angular range of travel. Mechanisms that precisely position optical elements at very low cryogenic temperatures (at/below 4 K) are vital to the operating success of a number of proposed infrared scientific instruments like those in SIRTF.

Ruled and holographic gratings experiment (AO 138-5)

Experiments on the the Long Duration Exposure Facility involving the study of the behavior of diffraction gratings, ruled replica, holographic, and ion etched masters with a long exposure to the space environment are discussed. To separate the metallic coatings compartment, some mirrors were added to the experiment. In order to be free from grating senescence on ground, one set of reference compounds was stored. Two sets of compounds were loaded, exposed, and shaded typed, in order to differentiate vacuum influences and sun illumination, cosmic dust, and radiation incidences. The investigation of possible damages was operated according to the fundamental triple point of view of wavefront flatness, absolute efficiency, and stray light level.

The development and test of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

The objectives were to address currently unanswered fundamental questions concerning the fine scale structure of the chromosphere, transition region, and corona. The unique characteristics of the spectroheliometer was used in combination with plasma diagnostic techniques to study the temperature, density, and velocity structures of specific features in the solar outer atmosphere. A unified understanding was sought of the interplay between the time dependent geometry of the magnetic field structure and the associated flows of mass and energy, the key to which lies in the smallest spatial scales that are unobservable with current EUV instruments. Toroidal diffraction gratings were fabricated and tested by a new technique using an elastically deformable substrate. The toroidal diffraction gratings was procured and tested to be used for the evaluation of the Multi-Anode Microchannel Array (MAMA) detector systems for the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) and UV Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) instruments on the SOHO mission.

Ruled and holographic diffraction gratings experiment (AO 138-5)

Ruled and Holographic Gratings (originals and replicas) proposed for use in loaded spectroscopic experiments are discussed. The optical performance of the gratings was tested in the low-earth orbital environment. Comparisons were made with identical components, which had been stored on the earth for the duration of the experiment. The following tests were performed: wavefront planeity, light efficiency, and stray-light level.

Optical-precision alignment of diffraction grating mold in moire interferometry

A high-precision optical method is presented for aligning diffraction grating molds with the edges of specimens in moire interferometry. The alignment fixture is simple and convenient to operate. The conventional method of grating-mold alignment has a wide band of uncertainty in the range of error which is not compatible with the required precision of high-sensitivity moire interferometry. Following a description of the alignment technique, both the single-edge and parallel-edge guide bar optical alignment methods are introduced and compared.

Photoelectrochemical fabrication of spectroscopic diffraction gratings, phase 2

This program was directed toward the production of Echelle diffraction gratings by a light-driven, electrochemical etching technique (photoelectrochemical etching). Etching is carried out in single crystal materials, and the differential rate of etching of the different crystallographic planes used to define the groove profiles. Etching of V-groove profiles was first discovered by us during the first phase of this project, which was initially conceived as a general exploration of photoelectrochemical etching techniques for grating fabrication. This highly controllable V-groove etching process was considered to be of high significance for producing low pitch Echelles, and provided the basis for a more extensive Phase 2 investigation.

Analysis of polarization properties of shallow metallic gratings by an extended Rayleigh-Fano theory

Rayleigh-Fano theory has been extended for the purpose of calculating the polarization anomaly of a grating having shallow grooves and finite conductivity. Simple analytic formulas are derived for predicting the position and the appearance of the anomalies. Phenomenological explanations are given to the origin of the anomalies. The validity of our analysis is examined by comparing computed degree of polarization with experimental data obtained in the visible region for Al-, Ag-, and Au-coated blazed gratings.

Deviated plane varied line-space grating spectrograph

The limit of resolution for the planar varied line-space grating in a converging beam can be found by analyses of the optical path errors. The errors may be canceled by slight deviations of the planar substrate surface. The cancellation of the path errors leads to a markedly improved spectral resolution. The surface figure for an improved resolution deviated planar varied line-space grating spectrograph is shown. Ray-tracing of this improved spectrograph shows substantial gains in spectral performance.

HiRES - High Resolution Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroheliometer toroidal diffraction grating performance evaluation

The ray-tracing results presented characterize the theoretically achievable EUV performance of the HiRES instrument. The effects of optical system misalignment on spectrograph images, and the laboratory results for two f/15 toroidal diffraction gratings that employ a multianode microchannel array, are also presented. Interferometric studies of toroidal figure accuracy, as well as optical and electron microscopy investigations of surface quality, are discussed. While the current toroidal gratings are noted to furnish good imaging across a wide wavelength range, they exhibit excessive EUV scatter, as well as spectral ghosting.

Color separation gratings

In this paper, we describe the theory, fabrication and test of a binary optics 'echelon'. The echelon is a grating structure which separates electromagnetic radiation of different wavelengths, but it does so according to diffraction order rather than by dispersion within one diffraction order, as is the case with conventional gratings. A prototype echelon, designed for the visible spectrum, is fabricated using the binary optics process. Tests of the prototype show good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Optimization of two dimensional gratings for very long wavelength quantum well infrared photodetectors

We have performed a detailed study of two-dimensional grating coupling for quantum well infrared photodetectors in the very long wavelength spectral region lambda is approximately 16 - 17 microns. Using calculations based on the modal expansion method we quantitatively explain the double peaked responsivity spectrum. By optimizing the grating parameters we achieve a normal incidence responsivity and detectivity which are three times larger than the 45 deg angle of incidence geometry.

On spurious bulk wave excitation in SAW grating reflectors on GaAs(001)(110)

Reflection of SAW (surface acoustic waves) from groove gratings on a cubic crystal is analyzed numerically on the basis of perturbation theory. It is shown that for certain angles of incidence, the conversion of SAW into bulk waves vanishes. This reduces the SAW reflection loss from grating.

Security System Responsive to Optical Fiber Having Bragg Grating

An optically responsive electronic lock is disclosed comprising an optical fiber serving as a key and having Bragg gratings placed therein. Further, an identification system is disclosed which has the optical fiber serving as means for tagging and identifying an object. The key or tagged object is inserted into a respective receptacle and the Bragg gratings cause the optical fiber to reflect a predetermined frequency spectra pattern of incident light which is detected by a decoder and compared against a predetermined spectrum to determine if an electrical signal is generated to either operate the lock or light a display of an authentication panel.

Continuous-Wave Single-Frequency Operation of Fabry-Perot Laser Diodes by Self-Injection Phase Locking Using Feedback from a Fiber Bragg Grating

Single-frequency operation of uncoated Fabry-Perot laser diodes is demonstrated by phase- locking the laser oscillations through self-injection seeding with feedback from a fiber Bragg grating. By precisely tuning the laser temperature so that an axial-mode coincides with the short-wavelength band edge of the grating, the phase of the feedback is made conjugate to that of the axial mode, locking the phase of the laser oscillations to that mode.

Rectangular Relief Diffraction Gratings for Coherent Lidar Beam Deflection

LIDAR systems require a light transmitting system for sending a laser light pulse into space and a receiving system for collecting the retro-scattered light, separating it from the outgoing beam and analyzing the received signal for calculating wind velocities. Currently, a shuttle manifested coherent LIDAR experiment called SPARCLE (SPAce Readiness Coherent Lidar Experiment) includes a silicon wedge (or prism) in its design in order to deflect the outgoing beam 30 degrees relative to the incident direction. The intent of this paper is to present two optical design approaches that may enable the replacement of the optical wedge component (in future, larger aperture, post-SPARCLE missions) with a surface relief transmission diffraction grating. Such a grating could be etched into a lightweight, flat, fused quartz substrate. The potential advantages of a diffractive beam deflector include reduced weight, reduced power requirements for the driving scanning motor, reduced optical sensitivity to thermal gradients, and increased dynamic stability.

The Low Energy Effective Area of the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph

The Chandra X-ray Observatory was successfully launched on July 23, 1999, and subsequently began an intensive calibration phase. We present the preliminary results from the in-flight calibration of the low energy response of the High Resolution Camera spectroscopic readout (HRC-S) combined with the Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) aboard Chandra. These instruments comprise the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph (LETGS). For this calibration study, we employ a pure hydrogen non-LTE white dwarf emission model (T = 25000 K and log g = 9.0) for comparison with the Chandra observations of Sirius B. The pre-flight calibration of the LETGS effective area only covered wavelengths shortward of 44 A (E less than 277 eV). Our Sirius B analysis shows that the HRC-S quantum efficiency (QE) model assumed for longer wavelengths leads to an overestimate of the effective area by an average factor of about 1.6. We derive a correction to the low energy HRC-S QE model to match the predicted and observed Sirius B spectra over the wavelength range of 44-185 A. We make an independent test of our results by the comparison of a Chandra LETGS observation of HZ 43 with pure hydrogen model atmosphere predictions and find good agreement.

Effect of UV Absorption on Fabrication of Fiber-Optic Bragg Gratings

UV light is used to fabricate fiber-optic gratings also heats up the fiber due to absorption by either the fiber-buffer, fiber-cladding, doped with titania or a thin coating of paint. Significant enhancement in the rate of grating fabrication is observed due to UV light absorption.
