Characterization and Simulation of Optical Delay System for the Proof-of-Principle Experiment of Optical Stochastic Cooling at IOTA

The Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) experiment at Fermilab’s IOTA storage ring uses two undulators to cool the beam over many turns. The radiation emitted by electrons in the first undulator is delayed and imaged in the second undulator where it applies a corrective energy kick on the electrons. Imperfections in the manufacturing of the delay plates can lead to a source of error. This paper presents the experimental characterization of the absolute thickness of these delay plates using an interferometric technique. The measured "thickness maps" are implemented in the Synchrotron Radiation Workshop (SRW) program to assess their impact on the delayed radiation pulse.

Feasibility Study of NSLS-II Sextupole BBA Measurement

In storage ring light sources, beam-based alignment (BBA) which adjusts the BPM centers to the quadrupole magnet centers is a common practice to maintain the machine performance. For more reliable and convenient BBA process, in the design of the storage ring, BPMs are located as close as possible to the quadrupoles. The most common method is scanning the position of the beam at the BPM (equivalently at the adjacent quadrupole) and find the position where the quadrupole strength change does not give change in the closed orbit. In the simulation of the feasibility test, we choose parameters, tune, orbit and phase advance and measure their variations depending on the sextupole offsets. Also, together with the real configuration of family, we simulate the individual power supply case for the comparisons. In this note, the simulation processes and the results are presented.

Electron polarimetry at EIC

The Electron-Ion Collider will be the first collider to use both polarized electron beams and polarized protons and light ions . This will offer unique opportunities to study the structure of protons and nuclei and answer fundamental questions in QCD. The uncertainties on the polarization measurement translate directly into the uncertainties of final physics observables. Hence, a precise measurement of the hadron beam polarization and a good control of the uncertainties are critical for the success of the spin program at the EIC. The requirements for beam polarimetry are non-destructive with uncertainty less than 1%. At the Electron Storage Ring (ESR) and the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS), the electron beam polarization will be measured using wellestablished Compton polarimetry techniques. However, the EIC Compton polarimeter will face unique challenges, demanding further developments. A Mott polarimeter will also be employed at the source for initial polarization measurements. Both longitudinal and transverse polarization will be measured, with the capability to monitor polarization on a bunch-by-bunch basis. Achieving these precise measurements will be critical to controlling systematic uncertainties and ensuring the overall success of the EIC’s physics objectives.

HOM DAMPER DESIGN FOR BNL EIC 197MHZ CRAB CAVITY

For the electron Storage Ring (ESR) of Brookhaven Na-tional Lab Electron Ion Collider (BNL EIC), beam loading is a great concern due to the high beam current together with abortion gap, especially for harmonic cavities due to higher operational frequency. There were attempts to use feedback/feedforward control, using multiple cavities with counter-phasing [1]. A straightforward way to lower beam loading effect is to design a cavity with low R/Q. In this paper, we show such a design for the 3rd harmonic cavity for BNL EIC ESR.

Rotators for the Hadron Storage Ring

The Electron Ion Collider calls for collisions of polarized electrons on transversely and longitudinally polarized protons and helions. To facilitate longitudinal polar ization, helical dipole rotator magnets from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider will be reused. These rotators are placed asymmetrically at -35.28 and 61.35 mrad from the interaction point. Longitudinal polarization of polarized protons cannot be satisfied for all energies while remaining below the maximum current of 322 A. Care has been taken to ensure longitudinal polarization can be satisfied at the energies of interest. The rotators ramping result in a shift in νs which has been compensated for with a change in the snake precession axes. The rotators can satisfy longitudinal polarization at all energies of interest, and the νs compensation has also been established.

Optical Properties of Wigglers for EIC Ring Electron Cooler

Electron Ion Collider (EIC) requires cooling of protons at top energy (275 GeV) to achieve the average design luminosity. Such a cooler must be capable of counteracting an IBS-driven emittance growth in proton bunches. The Ring Electron Cooler (REC) is a candidate for the EIC top energy cooler. The REC is a non-magnetized RF-based 150 MeV electron cooler, in which electrons are kept in the storage ring and re-utilized for several million turns. The REC is equipped with 18 damping wigglers, which keep electrons’ emittance constant by counteracting both electrons’ IBS and a proton electron beam-beam scattering happening in the cooling section. These wigglers operate at a relatively low energy but must have a rather high field to provide the required radiation cooling of electrons. As a result of this unique range of parameters, the wigglers’ optics exhibits interesting features The actual design parameters of the wigglers will be finalized in the REC lattice optimization.

A Schottky Tune Meter for the Fermilab Mu2E Delivery Ring

The Mu2E experiment will measure the ratio of the rate of the neutrinoless, coherent conversion of muons into electrons as a measure of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation. As part of the Mu2E experiment, a proton storage ring, called the Delivery Ring, will utilize resonant extraction to slow-spill protons to the experiment. To regulate and optimize the Delivery Ring resonant extraction process, a fast tune measurement scheme will be required. This Mu2E tune meter will measure the average tune and the tune spectrum, in multiple time slices, through the entire resonant extraction cycle of nominally 43 msec. The Mu2E tune meter system utilizes vertical and horizontal 21.4 MHz Schottky detector resonant pickups, taken from the decommissioned Tevatron, high-gain amplifiers and digital down-conversion FPGA logic for its signal processing. This paper will present the design of this Schottky tune meter as well as tune measurements from the Mu2E delivery ring.

Radial Shift Lattice Design using BMAD toolkit

The electron-ion collider (EIC) conceptual design [1] requires that the hadron storage ring (HSR) be able to demonstrate radial shifts using a dual rigidity system. The dual rigidity system is a system in which the dipoles in the utility straight sections(USS) of the EIC lattice have a different rigidity than the arc dipoles thus affecting the beam orbit in the lattice arcs. This difference in rigidity allows the orbital offset in the arc magnets to reach approximately 18.7 mm offset, with a circumference lengthening of 73.2 mm.

Beam Dynamics Simulations of Transient Beam Loading Effects in the 10GeV EIC Electron Storage Ring

We report on beam dynamics studies of transient beam loading effects in the 10 GeV EIC electron storage ring [1]. The studies are carried out with time-dependent Vlasov-Fokker-Planck simulations performed with the parallel, particle tracking code SPACE [2], which allows to follow self-consistently the dynamics of h bunches, where h in the number of RF buckets, in arbitrary multi-bunch configurations. The specific goal of the numerical simulations is to determine stable RF cavity settings under heavy beam loading. We also study the option to operate with a passive, third-harmonic cavity (3HC) system for bunch lengthening, addressing both stability and the performance limitation due to a gap in the uniform filling pattern for ion clearing.

Source size measurement options for low-emittance light sources

Radiation-based techniques for measuring electron source sizes are widely used as emittance diagnostics at existing synchrotron sources. Three of these techniques, namely, pinhole imaging, double-slit interferometry, and a K-edge filter-based beam position and size monitor system (ps-BPM), are evaluated for measuring source sizes at low-emittance storage rings. Each technique is reviewed with a detailed system description, design optimization, and practical considerations targeted for small source sizes. Pinhole imaging has the simplest setup and gives the beam profile in both transverse dimensions but with limited resolution. Double-slit interferometry has the highest resolution but with a limited detectable size range. The ps-BPM system shows reasonable resolution for monitoring small source sizes and divergence and can give real-time information of the source position and angle. New facilities may consider an integrated system that combines some or all of these techniques.

Transversely driven coherent beam oscillations and specifications for high-frequency ESR dipole power supply current ripple

We study coherent transverse beam oscillations in the EIC electron storage ring (ESR), to specify the tolerance for high-frequency ripple of the dipole magnet power supplies. To avoid unacceptable proton emittance growth from the oscillating beam-beam kick from the electrons, the amplitude of these oscillations at the proton betatron frequency needs to be limited to about 1e-4 fraction of the beam size at the interaction point. We show that the oscillations potentially caused by the ESR magnet dipole power supply ripple could be substantial, but still tolerable, if we account for the eddy current shielding in the vacuum chamber.

ORBIT CORRECTION STUDIES ON THE ELECTRON TRANSPORT LINE FROM RCS TO ESR

A dedicated electron transfer line from Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) to Electron Storage Ring (ESR), referred to as the RTE line has been designed for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The beamline follows a straight-line geometry, with a length of 133 m, and is consists with two matching sections and a FODO section for beam diagnostics. Imperfections with magnet alignments introduce orbit distortions, making orbit correction scheme a critical component in the design. To facilitate orbit correction, each quadrupole magnet is equipped with a pair of beam position monitors (BPMs) and kickers. The Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) algorithm is used for orbit correction and tolerance studies. This paper presents the ongoing progress in the optics design and error correction scheme of the RTE line.

Rapid Tuning of Synchrotron Surrogate Model at the Recycler Ring

The 8 GeV proton-storage Recycler Ring (RR) is essential for reaching megawatt beam intensity goals for the DUNE neutrino beam at Fermilab. Custom shims on each RR permanent magnet were designed to cancel manufacturing defects and bring magnetic fields to the design values. Remaining imperfections cause the observed tune variation vs energy to deviate from what is calculated using the design fields. Using the POUNDERS (“Practical Optimization Using No Derivatives for sums of Squares”) optimization method with Synergia in the loop, we demonstrate rapid convergence to a set of additive, higher-order multipole moments of these magnetic shims which reproduce that observed variation, and show that the convergence advantage grows with the parameter-space dimensionality.

Direct observation of 𝛽 and 𝛾 decay from a high-spin long-lived isomer in 187 Ta

187 Ta (Z = 73, N = 114) is located in the neutron-rich A ≈ 190 region where a prolate-to-oblate shape transition via triaxial softness is predicted to take place. A preceding work on the K π = (25/2 - ) isomer and a rotational band to which the isomer decays carried out by the same collaboration revealed that axial symmetry is slightly violated in this nucleus. Here, this paper focuses on a higher-lying isomer, which was previously identified at 2933(14) keV by mass measurements with the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI. The isomer of interest has been populated by a multinucleon transfer reaction with a 136 Xe primary beam incident on a natural tungsten target, using the KEK Isotope Separation System at RIKEN. New experimental findings obtained in the present paper include the internal and external β-decay branches from the high-spin isomer and a revised half-life of 136(24) s. The evaluated hindrances for K-forbidden transitions put constraints on the spin-parity assignment, which can be interpreted as being ascribed to a prolate shape with a five-quasiparticle configuration by model calculations.

Fabrication and Testing of 18-mm-Period, 0.5-m-Long Nb 3 Sn Superconducting Undulator

The Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, in collaboration with FNAL and LBNL, is developing a Nb 3 Sn superconducting undulator with the goal of installing this device on the APS storage ring and providing APS users with the novel radiation source. A series of short, similar to ~ 8-cm-long, 18-mm-period undulator prototype magnets have been designed, fabricated, and tested. The same design was scaled to fabricate a 0.5-m-long undulator prototype. Tests of this prototype showed that the designed peak magnetic field of 1.2 T at 850 A was successfully achieved. It represents at least a 20% improvement in comparison with a NbTi SCU having the same period and magnetic gap. Test results and lessons learned from the design process are reported here.

LAMP-PSR Scoping Studies Report

This report summarizes work performed from July – September 2023, performing an initial evaluation for the LANSCE Proton Storage Ring upgrade option “B.” The studies identified potential pathsforward, performing initial beam dynamics studies, and surveying various technology options different aspects of the upgrade. Taken together, the studies provide an “early look” at the feasibility, challenges and alternative methods for pursuing Option “B,” and give guidance towards more detailed design concept development needed as work progresses. Generally speaking, no major obstacles were identified in pursuing the Option “B” PSR upgrade path in terms of the machine physics or overall system architecture. Several areas of concern have been identified; we note that these primarily center on technology choice and must be addressed regardless of the upgrade path selected, and none of the concerns are considered insurmountable.

Study of Fluctuations in Undulator Radiation in the IOTA Ring at Fermilab

We study turn-by-turn fluctuations in the number of emitted photons in an undulator, installed in the IOTA electron storage ring at Fermilab, with an InGaAs PIN photodiode and an integrating circuit. In this paper, we present a theoretical model for the experimental data from previous similar experiments and in our present experiment, we attempt to verify the model in an independent and a more systematic way. Moreover, in our experiment we consider the regime of very small fluctuation when the contribution from the photon shot noise is significant, whereas we believe it was negligible in the previous experiments. Accordingly, we present certain critical improvements in the experimental setup that let us measure such a small fluctuation.
