Abstract

187 Ta (Z = 73, N = 114) is located in the neutron-rich A ≈ 190 region where a prolate-to-oblate shape transition via triaxial softness is predicted to take place. A preceding work on the K π = (25/2 - ) isomer and a rotational band to which the isomer decays carried out by the same collaboration revealed that axial symmetry is slightly violated in this nucleus. Here, this paper focuses on a higher-lying isomer, which was previously identified at 2933(14) keV by mass measurements with the Experimental Storage Ring at GSI. The isomer of interest has been populated by a multinucleon transfer reaction with a 136 Xe primary beam incident on a natural tungsten target, using the KEK Isotope Separation System at RIKEN. New experimental findings obtained in the present paper include the internal and external β-decay branches from the high-spin isomer and a revised half-life of 136(24) s. The evaluated hindrances for K-forbidden transitions put constraints on the spin-parity assignment, which can be interpreted as being ascribed to a prolate shape with a five-quasiparticle configuration by model calculations.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculation of 𝛿 NS in 10 C using an effective field theory approach

Here, we compute radiative corrections to the superallowed 𝛽 decay of 10 C in an effective field theory approach using nuclear matrix elements obtained from quantum Monte Carlo calculations. These corrections are an important ingredient in the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Masakawa quark mixing matrix element 𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 , and the role of this work is to illuminate the uncertainties arising from nuclear structure. Our results provide good agreement with both the traditional extraction of 𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 , as well as with a more recent evaluation performed using the no-core shell model and a dispersion formalism. The dominant uncertainty in this approach is the presence of two unknown low-energy constants that enter into the relevant nuclear matrix elements. Future determinations of these low-energy constants—either from QCD or modeling them with two nucleon amplitudes—would improve the precision of the extraction in this formalism.

First on-line commissioning experiments at the St. Benedict facility

Nuclear beta decays provide an excellent probe of fundamental symmetries due to their mediation by the weak interaction. In particular, precise measurements of these decays provide constraints on the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix. While superallowed pure Fermi decays currently set the most precise limits, the alternative suite of superallowed mixed mirror decays has been ill-studied. These nuclei can provide an important consistency check of calculation and measurement methods employed for the pure Fermi decays, more critically needed now in the wake of a 2.4σ deviation from unitarity of the CKM matrix. In order to remedy the gap in data for mirror decays, the Superallowed Transition Beta-Neutrino Decay Ion Coincidence Trap (St. Benedict) facility is being commissioned at the University of Notre Dame’s Nuclear Science Laboratory (NSL). In this paper, we present first results of the commissioning of the St. Benedict facility on-line at the TwinSol radioactive beam facility. The results of initial commissioning experiments involving the St. Benedict gas catcher, RF carpet, RFQ ion guide and RFQ cooler-buncher will be presented.
