Combined trellis coding with asymmetric MPSK modulation: An MSAT-X report

Traditionally symmetric, multiple phase-shift-keyed (MPSK) signal constellations, i.e., those with uniformly spaced signal points around the circle, have been used for both uncoded and coded systems. Although symmetric MPSK signal constellations are optimum for systems with no coding, the same is not necessarily true for coded systems. This appears to show that by designing the signal constellations to be asymmetric, one can, in many instances, obtain a significant performance improvement over the traditional symmetric MPSK constellations combined with trellis coding. The joint design of n/(n + 1) trellis codes and asymmetric 2 sup n + 1 - point MPSK is considered, which has a unity bandwidth expansion relative to uncoded 2 sup n-point symmetric MPSK. The asymptotic performance gains due to coding and asymmetry are evaluated in terms of the minimum free Euclidean distance free of the trellis. A comparison of the maximum value of this performance measure with the minimum distance d sub min of the uncoded system is an indication of the maximum reduction in required E sub b/N sub O that can be achieved for arbitrarily small system bit-error rates. It is to be emphasized that the introduction of asymmetry into the signal set does not effect the bandwidth of power requirements of the system; hence, the above-mentioned improvements in performance come at little or no cost. MPSK signal sets in coded systems appear in the work of Divsalar.

Satellite baseband processor test performance summary

A satellite baseband processor (BBP) has been developed for the NASA Lewis 30/20 GHz Satellite Communications Program. The BBP design, reported elsewhere, has been implemented in a proof-of-concept (POC) model. The results of the laboratory system tests of the POC are summarized. Bit error rate test results are presented for the FDM/TDMA communication system operating at 27.5, 110, and 550 Mbps over a variety of operating conditions. The results clearly demonstrate the applicability of baseband processing to future high capacity satellite communication system concepts. A brief description of the system concept, its function, and the role of the baseband processor are presented. The test conditions and means of simulation are also described. The methods of test evaluation and their significance in a system context are given.

System performance of dual polarization satellite communication links affected by attenuation and depolarization

New models have been developed to analyze the performance of dual polarization frequency re-use links when affected simultaneously by attenuation and depolarization. The models have been used to determine the baseband signal to noise ratio for analog modulation links using FM and bit error rate for links using digital modulation (PSK). The methods are applicable to links using slant paths to satellites and also to terrestrial links.

A cascaded coding scheme for error control

A cascaded coding scheme for error control was investigated. The scheme employs a combination of hard and soft decisions in decoding. Error performance is analyzed. If the inner and outer codes are chosen properly, extremely high reliability can be attained even for a high channel bit-error-rate. Some example schemes are studied which seem to be quite suitable for satellite down-link error control.

Error and erasure probabilities for Galileo uplink code

The Galileo uplink Frame Erasure probability and Undetected Frame Error probability are derived. The performance meets desired specification under normal operations. The Galileo command system will work well even in an emergency condition, where the bit error rate into the command decoder is 1.00 X 0.001 (although Galileo's command threshold error rate is 1.00 X 0.00001).

Error control techniques for satellite and space communications

The performance anlaysis of NASA's telecommand systems was summarized. It is assumed that the decoded frames are scrambled prior to decoding by the outer code. The average decoded bit error rate are examined which allows the possibility of evaluating many different frame coding options. The capacity and cutoff rate of the outer channel formed by the combination of the actual physical channel and the inner encoder and decoder in a concatenated coding system were analyzed. The best combination of inner and outer codes to use in a concatenated coding system were determined. It was established that in general: (1) it is better not to interleave between the inner and outer codes; and (2) for a fixed overall code rate, it is better to use higher rate inner codes and lower rate outer codes. Inner convolutional codes are considered. The analysis is more difficult in this case because the inner decoder error events do not appear in blocks of fixed length but can be of many different lengths.

DSA's subcarrier demodulation losses

The degradation in bit error rate performance due to imperfect subcarrier tracking by the Demodulation Synchronization Assembly (DSA) is investigated. Results apply to any type of digital loop and received signal dynamics. A type four loop causes the least amount of loss, because it tracks phase jerk with zero steady-state error. However, when frequency rate and frequency acceleration are as large as in the extended Magellan mission, it will be necessary to decrease the loop update time in order to minimize the losses.

Effect of digital scrambling on satellite communication links

Digital data scrambling has been considered for communication systems using NRZ symbol formats. The purpose is to increase the number of transitions in the data to improve the performance of the symbol synchronizer. This is accomplished without expanding the bandwidth but at the expense of increasing the data bit error rate (BER). Models for the scramblers/descramblers of practical interest are presented together with the appropriate link model. The effects of scrambling on the performance of coded and uncoded links are studied. The results are illustrated by application to the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) links. Conclusions regarding the usefulness of scrambling are also given.

A retransmission protocol for the message service of a land mobile satellite experiment

The objectives of NASA's land mobile satellite experiments are discussed. The assigned multiple access protocol combined with a retransmission scheme is to provide reliable transmission of data messages from mobiles to base stations (BSs). The sequences for communication between mobiles and BSs, mobiles and the network management center (NMC), and BSs and NMC are examined, and an example of mobiles/BSs communication is provided. The performance of the retransmission protocol and data message reservation and message channels delays are analyzed. A bit error rate of 0.001 is observed for satellite channels in a mobile environment and the message error probability is between 0-0.1.

Performance analysis of a hybrid ARQ error control scheme for near earth satellite communications

A robust error control coding scheme is presented. The scheme is a cascaded forward error correction (FEC) scheme supported by parity retransmissions for further error correction in the erroneous data words. The error performance and throughput efficiency of the scheme are analyzed. Two specific schemes are proposed for NASA near earth satellite communications. It is shown that both schemes provide high reliability and throughput efficiency even for high channel bit error rates in the range of .002. The schemes are suitable for high data rate file transfer.

Performance of PLL synchronized optical PPM communication systems

Receiver timing synchronization of an optical PPM communication system can be achieved using a phase-locked loop (PLL) if the photodetector output is properly processed. The synchronization performance is shown to improve with increasing signal power and decreasing loop bandwidth. The bit error rate performance of the PLL synchronized PPM system is analyzed and compared to that of the perfectly synchronized system. It is shown that the increase in signal power needed to compensate for the imperfect sychronization is small (less than 0.1 dB) for loop bandwidths less than 0.1 percent of the slot frequency.

DSP-based non-coherent dual detector demodulator for land mobile radio channels

This paper outlines the development of a digital demodulator suitable for the non-coherent detection of various modulation formats including: Phase Shift Keying (PSK), Continuous Phase Frequency Shift Keying (CPFSK) and Frequency Modulation (FM). The demodulator design concept has been derived with a view towards a single integrated circuit (IC) implementation. Two detectors, one non-coherent and one differentially coherent, operate concurrently, providing data detection and automatic frequency control (AFC). Bit error rate results are provided which illustrate the receiver performance in white Gaussian noise.

A reliable pipelining protocol for the message service of the Mobile Satellite Experiment

This paper describes and analyzes a pipelining protocol for the data message communications of MSAT-X, a proposed experimental satellite-based mobile communications network. A demand assigned multiple access protocol using pure ALOHA for making reservation requests has been developed for MSAT-X under error-free assumptions. Preliminary propagation studies indicate that the short term bit error rate of satellite channels in a mobile environment can be as high as 0.001. Therefore, error-control schemes must be developed to ensure reliable transmissions. A retransmission scheme using selective repeat to minimize the end-to-end delay is proposed. Slotted ALOHA for making reservation requests is used to increase the overall system throughput. Since the number of channels available for reservation and data channels is essentially fixed for a given voice call blocking probability and a fixed call arrival rate, the analysis presented in this paper is also applicable to the integrated voice and data services of MSAT-X. Various operational scenarios have been investigated.

A cascaded error control coding scheme for space and satellite communication

An error control coding scheme for space and satellite communications is presented. The scheme is attained by cascading two codes, the inner and outer codes. Error performance of the scheme is analyzed. It is shown that, if the inner and outer codes are chosen properly, extremely high reliability can be achieved even for a high channel bit-error-rate. Several exmple schemes are studied. One of the example schemes is proposed to NASA for satellite or spacecraft downlink error control.

Interleaver design for trellis-coded differential 8-PSK modulation with non-coherent detection

The effect of finite interleaver size on bit error rate (BER) performance of coded 8-DPSK is determined by means of computer simulations. The losses evaluated in this way include the SNR degradation due to the timing and frequency errors of the symbol synchronizer and the automatic frequency control (AFC) of the receiver. BER measurements are presented using a conventional 2/3 rate convolutional 8-state trellis-code for typical Rayleigh and Rician fading channels. It is shown that for a Rician channel with a Rician parameter of 7 dB, a Doppler spread of 100 Hz and a data rate of 2400 bps, an interleaver with size 16 x 16 symbols performs nearly as well as a very large interleaver. It is also shown that for very fast Rayleigh channels, the BER-curves flatten out at large SNR.

An error floor in tone calibrated transmission

Use of a low level pilot tone has been shown to eliminate the error floor in fading channels. This paper demonstrates that non-idealities in the receiver's pilot tone filter cause reappearance of the error floor. It also presents the bit error rate (BER) in closed form, in contrast to the multidimensional numerical integration of previous work.
