Modal Analysis and Gain Estimation

Interactive program yields eigenvectors, eigenvalues, and gains for feedback-control systems. Interactive Modal Analysis and Gain Estimation System (IMAGES) provides eigensystem synthesis capability to control-system engineer. IMAGES modular and flexible. Capable of both modal and spectral synthesis of multi-input control systems. IMAGES user-oriented, interactive program that frees engineer to concentrate on eigensystem synthesis. Automatic assembly of space stations

A problem in the automatic assembly of space stations is the determination of guidance laws for the terminal rendezvous and docking of two structural components or modules. The problem involves the feedback control of both the relative attitude and translational motion of the modules. A suitable mathematical model based on rigid body dynamics was used. The basic requirements, physical constraints and difficulties associated with the control problem are discussed. An approach which bypasses some of the difficulties is proposed. A nonlinear guidance law satisfying the basic requirements is derived. The implementation requirements is discussed. The performance of the resulting feedback control system with rigid and flexible structural components is studied by computer simulation.

The relationship between the Zames representation and LQG compensators

Recently Zames (1981) has introduced the so-called model reference transformation which can be used to conveniently parameterize the class of linear time-invariant multivariable compensators that lead to stable feedback control systems. A very popular design methodology for designing stable and robust multivariable control systems is that based on the Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) methodology with Loop Transfer Recovery (LTR). Thus, it is natural to inquire upon the relationship between the Zames representation and the LQG/LTR compensators. This paper summarizes this relationship.

Stability robustness improvement using constrained optimization techniques

In a multiloop feedback control system, stability margin improvement by singular value shaping can be achieved by a noise adjustment procedure. A direct method for shaping singular value spectrum using constrained optimization technique is described. The design algorithm minimizes a standard LQG performance index while trying to satisfy minimum singular value constraints at the plant input, or output, or at both. Selected parameters of a stabilizing control law are used as the design variables. The capabilities of this method are demonstrated using a two input two output system representing a drone aircraft and its lateral attitude control system.

Magnetic Bearing With Radial and Angular Control

Active magnetic bearing stably levitates rotor against radial (lateral) and axial motion and points rotor axis in controllable direction, yet allows rotor to turn freely about own axis. Rotor only moving part, and absence of mechanical contact between rotor and stator assures long life. Active magnetic bearing includes electromagnet coils tilting rotor clockwise or counterclockwise, or move it right or left. Feedback control system maintains rotor at equilibrium radial and angular positions in response to signals from position sensors. No active control needed to maintain equilibrium axial position. Adjustable magnetic bearing useful in high-speed rotating devices, robotic joints, and supports for optical elements.

Active Suppression of Rotor Vibrations

In active rotor control, vibrations of flexibly supported rotors suppressed by use of electronic feedback control system. System senses vibration level of rotor system and, in turn, provides damping such that vibration level maintained within acceptable limits. Enables rotor to operate through and above its critical speeds, increases bearing life, reduces size and weight of rotating shafts, and generally enables rotors to operate more smoothly.

Flight characteristics of the AD-1 oblique-wing research aircraft

The AD-1 is a low-speed oblique-wing research airplane. This report reviews the vehicle's basic flight characteristics, including many aerodynamic, stability, and control effects that are unique to an oblique-wing configuration. These effects include the change in sideforce with angle of attack, moment changes with angle of attack and load factor, initial stall on the trailing wing, and inertial coupling caused by a roll-pitch cross product of inertia. An assessment of the handling qualities includes pilot ratings and comments. Ratings were generally satisfactory through 30 deg of wing sweep but degraded with increased sweep. A piloted simulation study indicated that a basic rate feedback control system could be used to improve the handling qualities at higher wing sweeps.

Modeling and stability analysis for the upper atmosphere research satellite auxiliary array switch component

A feedback control system, called an auxiliary array switch, was designed to connect or disconnect auxiliary solar panel segments from a spacecraft electrical bus to meet fluctuating demand for power. A simulation of the control system was used to carry out a number of design and analysis tasks that could not economically be performed with a breadboard of the hardware. These tasks included: (1) the diagnosis of a stability problem, (2) identification of parameters to which the performance of the control system was particularly sensitive, (3) verification that the response of the control system to anticipated fluctuations in the electrical load of the spacecraft was satisfactory, and (4) specification of limitations on the frequency and amplitude of the load fluctuations.

A linearized model of helicopter dynamics including correlation with flight test

A linearized model for rotorcraft dynamics has been developed through the use of symbolic automatic equation generation techniques. The dynamic model has been formulated in a unique way such that it can be used to analyze a variety of rotor/body coupling problems including a rotor mounted on a flexible shaft with a number of modes as well as free flight stability and control characteristics. Direct comparison of the time response to longitudinaol, lateral and directional control inputs at various trim conditions shows that the linear model yields good to very good correlation with flight test. In particular it is also shown that a dynamic inflow model is essential to obtain good time response correlation especially for the hover trim condition and also that at translational flight trim conditions the main rotor wake interaction with the tail rotor and fixed tail surfaces is a significant contributor to the response. A relatively simple model for the downwash and sidewash at tail surfaces based on flat vortex wake theory is shown to produce good agreement. Finaly, the influence of rotor flap and lag dynamics on automatic control systems feedback gain limitations is investigated with the model.

Robustness margin calculation with dynamic and real parametric uncertainty

The problem of robust stability in feedback control systems with real uncertain parameters and unmodeled dynamics, where the latter takes the form of one complex block dynamic uncertainty, is considered. A robustness margin Tm is defined with respect to such model uncertainty structure and robust stability is characterized in terms of it. An algorithm to calculate Tm and the closely related multivariable stability margin km and structured singular value mu measures of robust stability is developed. It is shown that other control problems, such as robust performance for real parametric uncertainty, can also be handled in this framework.

Robustness with real parametric and structured complex uncertainty

The problem of robust stability and performance in feedback control systems with n real (possibly related) uncertain parameters and structured unmodeled dynamics (the latter taking the form of m complex blocks dynamic uncertainties) is considered. A robustness margin rm is defined with respect to such model uncertainty structure and an algorithm is developed to compute it. Robust stability and performance are characterized in terms of r sub m or the structured singular value mu. An iterative procedure using the above algorithm is given to compute tight bounds on k sub m and mu. These bounds are exact for the case m = 3 or less.

Active control of flexural vibrations in beams

An analytical model of the feedback control system which estimates the voltage generated by the piezoelectric sensor as a function of the dynamic stress at the sensor location and the force exerted by the driver piezoelectric as a function of signal gain is developed. The analytical results are compared to measured results for a cantilever beam excited to vibrate in its first natural mode. The estimated increase in the first mode damping factor is in good agreement with the measured results.

Small gain robustness issues in the p-integrator repetitive controller

The basic theory of the digital p-integrator controller is utilized to modify the command to a stable analog feedback control system in order to produce zero tracking error of a repetitive command. Mapping of continuous time poles and zeros to the images in the discrete time domain is performed. It is shown that for a pole excess of one, with p odd, the p-integrator learning controller will often produce a stable learning process, even for relatively large sample times. For a pole excess of two, a stable learning process can often be achieved for any p as long as the sample time is kept sufficiently short. Therefore, when the pole excess is zero and one utilizes the proper p-integrator controller with p odd, stable performance is often produced, even for relatively large sample times.

Formulation of a minimum variance deconvolution technique for compensation of pneumatic distortion in pressure sensing devices

Increasingly, aircraft system designs require that aerodynamic parameters derived from pneumatic measurements be employed as control-system feedbacks. Such high frequency pressure measurements' accuracy is compromised by pressure distortion due to frictional attenuation and pneumatic resonance within the sensing system. A pneumatic distortion model is here formulated and reduced to a low-order state-variable model which retains most of the full model's dynamic characteristics. This reduced-order model is coupled with standard results from minimum variance estimation theory to develop an algorithm to compensate for pneumatic-distortion effects.
