CAST Technical Bulletin #008: Two-Way Satellite Time and Frequency Transfer (TWSTFT) Setup and Lessons learned

Two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT) has been a trusted time transfer and synchronization method for a long time. It provides good timing accuracy, usually 100 ns or less. The setup of two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT) coordination and communication are crucial to having a system that runs and works as it should, especially when the setup involves traveling and working at a third-party facility. Even with perfect planning, some problems will arise; this document describes TWSTFT setup and lessons learned.

Center for Alternative Synchronization and Timing (CAST) Technical Bulletin #007: Holdover Experiment #1

Stable and accurate timing forms the foundation of many modern essential services. While Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) provide a cheap way to achieve extremely accurate timing, these systems are vulnerable to interference and complete outages, forcing systems that rely on them into a state of holdover. Testing and characterizing holdover performance is therefore essential for ensuring that these modern services do not go down when GNSS-based timing is unavailable.

Light, High Performance and Scalable Coal-Derived Composites for Construction: Precast and Cast-in-Place Applications

The overall objective of this project was to produce a coal-based construction material that has up to ~95 weight percent (wt. %) coal with physical, chemical, and thermal properties exceeding those of ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based construction materials. Additionally, the project aimed to minimize external binders by implementing novel mixing techniques, while exceeding the performance/cost ratio of OPC. Finally, the project was to demonstrate production of precast products via the design and fabrication of products via a bench scale process. Consistent with some of these objectives, the project successfully fabricated samples of coal-based composite materials with >80 wt% coal with physical, chemical and thermal properties on par with cement-based concrete. Select samples demonstrated compressive strengths with >7,000 psi and flexural strength of >420 psi. The composite materials minimized external binders and also demonstrated durability, as evidenced by resistance to acidic and basic solutions. Finally, larger slab and beam type samples were produced using a process developed by the Recipient, although, the process was not semicontinuous in nature. Taken together, the results of this project suggest that domestic coal has potential to serve as a replacement for cementitious materials utilized in incumbent construction technologies, which could significantly reduce the energy and emissions of the construction industry

Advanced cast aluminum alloys for automotive engine application with superior high-temperature properties

A high fatigue strength aluminum alloy comprises in weight percent copper 3.0-3.5%, iron 0-1.3%, magnesium 0.24-0.35%, manganese 0-0.8%, silicon 6.5-12.0%, strontium 0-0.025%, titanium 0.05-0.2%, vanadium 0.20-0.35%, zinc 0-3.0%, zirconium 0.2-0.4%, a maximum of 0.5% other elements and balance aluminum plus impurities. The alloy defines a microstructure having an aluminum matrix with the Zr and the V in solid solution after solidification. The matrix has solid solution Zr of at least 0.16% after heat treatment and solid solution V of at least 0.20% after heat treatment, and both Cu and Mg are dissolved into the aluminum matrix during the heat treatment and subsequently precipitated during the heat treatment. A process for heat treating an Al—Si—Cu—Mg—Fe—Zn—Mn—Sr-TMs alloy comprises heat treating the alloy to produce a microstructure having a matrix with Zr and V in solid solution after solidification.

System and method for controlling oxidation of metals during freeform casting

A system is disclosed for printing a component. The system may have a nozzle controlled for movement within a plane. The nozzle may be configured to dispense a molten metal. A substrate may be positioned within a reservoir. The substrate may receive the molten metal to form the component in a printing operation. A heated barrier material in a molten state may be contained within the reservoir for forming a liquid barrier between an atmosphere and the substrate. The nozzle has a tip which is submerged within the liquid barrier while dispensing the molten metal during the printing operation. The liquid barrier forms a barrier between an atmosphere in a vicinity of the substrate and the substrate.

Heat treatments for high temperature cast aluminum alloys

Disclosed herein are embodiments of an aging heat treatment that can be used to replace conventional aging steps when making alloy embodiments of the present disclosure. Embodiments of the disclosed aging heat treatment reduce cost and complexity in producing aluminum alloy-based components while also promoting and/or improving microstructure stability of the aluminum alloys.

Porous materials via freeze-casting of metal salt solutions

Disclosed here is a method for making a nanoporous material, comprising aerosolizing a solution comprising at least one metal salt and at least one solvent to obtain an aerosol, freezing the aerosol to obtain a frozen aerosol, and drying the frozen aerosol to obtain a nanoporous metal compound material. Further, the nanoporous metal compound material can be reduced to obtain a nanoporous metal material.
