Segmentation Of Multifrequency Complex-Amplitude SAR Data

Several mathematical models and associated algorithms implement method of segmenting multifrequency, highly speckled, high-resolution, complex-amplitude (amplitude and phase) synthetic-aperture-radar (SAR) digitized image into regions, within each of which radar backscattering characteristics are similar or homogeneous from place to place. Typically, each region represents different type of terrain or other surface; e.g., forest, agricultural land, sea ice, or water. Method of segmentation of SAR scene into regions is product of generalization, to multifrequency case, of single-frequency method described in "Algorithms for Segmentation of Complex-Amplitude SAR Data" (NPO-18524).

Pin-Retraction Mechanism On Quick-Release Cover

Quick-release cover includes pin-retraction mechanism releasing cover quickly from lower of two sets of pin connections holding cover. Cover released at top by pulling lever as described in "Lever-Arm Pin Puller" (NPO-18788). Removal of cover begins when technician or robot pulls upper-pin-release lever. Cover swings downward until tabs on lower pins are pulled through slots in their receptacles. Lower pins are then free.

Self-Reconfigurable Two-Arm Manipulator With Bracing

Proposed two-arm robotic manipulator capable of changing its mechanical structure to fit given task. No reassembly or replacement in conventional sense: instead, arms commanded during operation to assume any of number of alternative configurations, described briefly in "Dynamic Coordination of a Two-Arm Robotic Manipulator" (NPO-18816), NASA Tech Briefs.

Dual-Arm Generalized Compliant Motion With Shared Control

Dual-Arm Generalized Compliant Motion (DAGCM) primitive computer program implementing improved unified control scheme for two manipulator arms cooperating in task in which both grasp same object. Provides capabilities for autonomous, teleoperation, and shared control of two robot arms. Unifies cooperative dual-arm control with multi-sensor-based task control and makes complete task-control capability available to higher-level task-planning computer system via large set of input parameters used to describe desired force and position trajectories followed by manipulator arms. Some concepts discussed in "A Generalized-Compliant-Motion Primitive" (NPO-18134).

Bias magnetic fields tailored to match those needed elsewhere in device. Grooves through part of thickness of magnetic garnet storage layer of vertical-Bloch-line (VBL) memory device used to confine magnetic bubble and stripe domains in desired storage areas. VBL-memory concept described in "Vertical-Bloch-Line Memory" (NPO-18467).

More About Graded-Reflectance Optics For Coherent Lidar

Report presents theoretical study of energy-extraction and power-transmission efficiency of unstable-resonator laser cavity, output mirror of which has graded reflectance. Super-gaussian reflectance profile may optimize performance. Similar study reported in "Comparative Study of Resonator Optics for Lidar Applications" (NPO-17776).

Improved Writing-Conductor Designs For Magnetic Memory

Writing currents reduced to practical levels. Improved conceptual designs for writing conductors in micromagnet/Hall-effect random-access integrated-circuit memory reduces electrical current needed to magnetize micromagnet in each memory cell. Basic concept of micromagnet/Hall-effect random-access memory presented in "Magnetic Analog Random-Access Memory" (NPO-17999).

Window-Based Graphics For Scheduling

XOPPS computer program generates window-based graphics for scheduling and planning projects. Provides easy and fast on-screen "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" editing capabilities. Object-oriented, but unique in its capability for creating objects that have date attributes. Can be used in conjunction with project-management software. Written in C language for Sunseries workstations running SunOS. XOPPS was developed in 1992, based on the Sunview version of OPPS (NPO-18439) developed in 1990. It is copyrighted work with all copyright vested in NASA.

Improved Locally Adaptive Vector Quantization

Several refinements introduced to improve performance of data-compression scheme described in "Adaptive Vector-Quantization Scheme" (NPO-18186). Principal advantages of LAVQ are that complexity and coding time less than those of some other data-compression schemes. Also, does not require priori knowledge of either codebook or statistics of source data.

Crossbar Switches For Optical Data-Communication Networks

Optoelectronic and electro-optical crossbar switches called "permutation engines" (PE's) developed to route packets of data through fiber-optic communication networks. Basic network concept described in "High-Speed Optical Wide-Area Data-Communication Network" (NPO-18983). Nonblocking operation achieved by decentralized switching and control scheme. Each packet routed up or down in each column of this 5-input/5-output permutation engine. Routing algorithm ensures each packet arrives at its designated output port without blocking any other packet that does not contend for same output port.

Robust Routing Protocol For Digital Messages

Refinement of ditigal-message-routing protocol increases fault tolerance of polled networks. AbNET-3 is latest of generic AbNET protocols for transmission of messages among computing nodes. AbNET concept described in "Multiple-Ring Digital Communication Network" (NPO-18133). Specifically aimed at increasing fault tolerance of network in broadcast mode, in which one node broadcasts message to and receives responses from all other nodes. Communication in network of computers maintained even when links fail.

Ultrasonic Measurement Of Elastic Constants Of Composites

Ultrasonic testing system yields data on elastic constants of matrix/fiber laminated composite material. Related to one described in "Ultrasonic System Measures Elastic Properties of Composites" (NPO-18729). Tests performed nondestructive, and involve access by ultrasonic probes to only one side of material specimen. In comparison with other available ultrasonic testing systems, this system relatively inexpensive, and based on testing technique that is simpler and rapidly yields more-accurate results.

Spatial-Operator Algebra For Flexible-Link Manipulators

Method of computing dynamics of multiple-flexible-link robotic manipulators based on spatial-operator algebra, which originally applied to rigid-link manipulators. Aspects of spatial-operator-algebra approach described in several previous articles in NASA Tech Briefs-most recently "Robot Control Based on Spatial-Operator Algebra" (NPO-17918). In extension of spatial-operator algebra to manipulators with flexible links, each link represented by finite-element model: mass of flexible link apportioned among smaller, lumped-mass rigid bodies, coupling of motions expressed in terms of vibrational modes. This leads to operator expression for modal-mass matrix of link.

Algorithm For Control Of Underactuated Manipulators

Algorithm for improved control of underactuated multiple-link robotic manipulators developed via spatial-algebra-operator approach. Aspects of this approach described in several previous articles in NASA Tech Briefs-most recently "Robot Control Based on Spatial-Operator Algebra" (NPO-17918). Underactuated manipulator has fewer actuators than it has degrees of freedom. Complexity of underactuated systems managed by unified analysis. It has implications for fault-tolerant control, and many practical manipulators underactuated. Examples include manipulators with flexible joints and/or flexible links; space/underwater robots; manipulators that operate with some actuators that turned off because of failure or because of need to conserve energy; manipulators that grasp objects loosely, and manipulators that grasp objects with internal degrees of freedom (e.g., plungers, rollers).
