Measurement of kaon directed flow in Au+Au collisions in the high baryon density region

Rapidity-odd directed flow v 1 measurements are presented for $K^±$ and $K^0_S$ in Au + Au collisions for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ from 3.0 to 3.9 GeV with the STAR experiment. For comparison, v 1 of π ± , protons, and Λ from the same collisions are also discussed. The mid-rapidity v 1 slope dv 1 /dy| y=0 for protons and Λ is positive in these collisions. On the other hand, v 1 slope of kaons exhibits a strong dependence: negative at p T < 0.6 GeV/c and positive at higher p T . A similar p T dependence is also evident for the v 1 slope of charged pions. Compared to the spectator-removed calculations in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3.0–3.9 GeV, the JAM model demonstrates a pronounced shift of the v 1 slopes of mesons towards the negative direction. It suggests that the shadowing effect of the spectators plays an important role in the observed kaon anti-flow at low p T in the high baryon density region of non-central collisions.

Non-adiabatic quantum interference and complex formation in ultracold collisions of Rb with KRb

Ultracold elastic collisions of 87 Rb with 40 K 87 Rb in its ground vibrational and rotational state are investigated using a first principles based theoretical methodology. Full-dimensional ab initio computed potential energy surfaces are reported that include the two lowest-lying electronic states, their conical intersection, non-adiabatic couplings and an accurate long-range behavior. A numerically exact time-independent quantum dynamics method in hyperspherical coordinates is used to compute the elastic scattering cross sections, rate coefficients and collision lifetime spectrum. The quantum scattering calculations include all degrees of freedom and treat both electronic states and their non-adiabatic couplings using a two-state diabatic representation. The theoretically computed elastic rate coefficient is in good agreement with the recently reported experimental value. Significant non-adiabatic quantum interference effects are shown to originate from the unique properties of ultracold collisions and the geometric phase associated with the conical intersection. A high-resolution collision energy grid is used to investigate the origin of the experimentally reported long-lived 3-body collision complexes.

Scattering theory in noncanonical phase space: A Drift-Kinetic collision operator for weakly collisional plasmas

After developing a scattering theory for grazing collisions in general noncanonical phase spaces, we introduce a guiding center collision operator in five-dimensional phase space designed for plasma regimes characterized by long wavelengths (relative to the Larmor radius), low frequencies (relative to the cyclotron frequency), and weak collisionality (where repeated Coulomb collisions induce cumulatively small changes in particle magnetic moment). The collision operator is fully determined by the noncanonical Hamiltonian structure of guiding center dynamics and exhibits a metriplectic structure, ensuring the conservation of particle number, momentum, energy, and interior Casimir invariants. It also satisfies an H-theorem, allowing for deviations from an equilibrium Maxwellian distribution due to the nontrivial kernel of the noncanonical guiding center Poisson tensor, spanned by the magnetic moment. We propose that this collision operator and its underlying mathematical structure may offer valuable insight into the study of turbulence, transport, and self-organizing phenomena in both laboratory and astrophysical plasmas.

Measurements of dihadron correlations relative to the event plane in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =200$ GeV*

Dihadron azimuthal correlations containing a high transverse momentum ($ p_{T} $) trigger particle are sensitive to the properties of the nuclear medium created at RHIC through the strong interactions occurring between the traversing parton and the medium, i.e. jet-quenching. Previous measurements revealed a strong modification to dihadron azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions with respect to p+p and d+Au collisions. The modification increases with the collision centrality, suggesting a path-length or energy density dependence to the jet-quenching effect. This paper reports STAR measurements of dihadron azimuthal correlations in mid-central (20%-60%) Au+Au collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 200 $ GeV as a function of the trigger particle's azimuthal angle relative to the event plane, $ \phi_{s} = | \phi_{t}- \psi_{{\rm{EP}}}| $. The azimuthal correlation is studied as a function of both the trigger and associated particle $ p_{T} $. The subtractions of the combinatorial background and anisotropic flow, assuming Zero Yield At Minimum (ZYAM), are described. The correlation results are first discussed with subtraction of the even harmonic (elliptic and quadrangular) flow backgrounds. The away-side correlation is strongly modified, and the modification varies with $ \phi_{s} $, with a double-peak structure for out-of-plane trigger particles. The near-side ridge (long range pseudo-rapidity $ \Delta\eta $ correlation) appears to drop with increasing $ \phi_{s} $ while the jet-like component remains approximately constant. The correlation functions are further studied with the subtraction of odd harmonic triangular flow background arising from fluctuations. It is found that the triangular flow, while responsible for the majority of the amplitudes, is not sufficient to explain the $ \phi_{s} $-dependence of the ridge or the away-side double-peak structure. The dropping ridge with $ \phi_{s} $ could be attributed to a $ \phi_{s} $-dependent elliptic anisotropy; however, the physics mechanism of the ridge remains an open question. Even with a $ \phi_{s} $-dependent elliptic flow, the away-side correlation structure is robust. These results, with extensive systematic studies of the dihadron correlations as a function of $ \phi_{s} $, trigger and associated particle $ p_{T} $, and the pseudo-rapidity range $ \Delta\eta $, should provide stringent inputs to help understand the underlying physics mechanisms of jet-medium interactions in high energy nuclear collisions.

Observation of Suppressed Charged-Particle Production in Ultrarelativistic Oxygen-Oxygen Collisions

A hot and dense state of nuclear matter, known as the quark-gluon plasma, is created in collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy nuclei. Highly energetic quarks and gluons, collectively referred to as partons, lose energy as they travel through this matter, leading to suppressed production of particles with large transverse momenta (𝑝 T ). Conversely, high-𝑝 T particle suppression has not been seen in proton-lead collisions, raising questions regarding the minimum system size required to observe parton energy loss. Oxygen-oxygen (OO) collisions examine a region of effective system size that lies between these two extreme cases. The CMS detector at the CERN LHC has been used to quantify charged-particle production in inclusive OO collisions for the first time via measurements of the nuclear modification factor (𝑅 AA ). The 𝑅 AA is derived by comparing particle production to expectations based on proton-proton (𝑝⁢𝑝) data and has a value of unity in the absence of nuclear effects. The data for OO and 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.36 TeV correspond to integrated luminosities of 6.1 nb −1 and 1.02 pb −1 , respectively. The 𝑅 AA is below unity with a minimum of 0.69 ± 0.04 around 𝑝 T = 6 GeV. The data exhibit better agreement with theoretical models incorporating parton energy loss as compared to baseline models without energy loss.

Observation of Charmonium Sequential Suppression in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We report measurements of charmonium sequential suppression in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The inclusive yield ratio of 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 as a function of transverse momentum is reported, along with the centrality dependence of the double ratio, defined as the 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) to J/𝜓 ratio in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions. In the 0–80% centrality class, the double ratio is found to be 0.41±0.10 (stat)±0.03 (syst)±0.02 (ref), lower than unity with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. This provides experimental evidence that 𝜓⁡(2⁢S) is significantly more suppressed than J/𝜓 in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. This sequential suppression pattern seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions, but with no significant dependence on the transverse momentum.

Temperature-dependent rotationally inelastic collisions of OH – and He

We have studied the fundamental rotational relaxation and excitation collision of OH – J = 0 ↔ 1 with helium at different collision energies. Using state-selected photodetachment in a cryogenic ion trap, the collisional excitation of the first excited rotational state of OH – has been investigated and absolute inelastic collision rate coefficients have been extracted for collision temperatures between 20 and 35 K. Furthermore, the rates are compared with accurate quantum scattering calculations for three different potential-energy surfaces. Good agreement is found within the experimental accuracy, but the experimental trend of increasing collision rates with temperature is only in part reflected in the calculations.

Production of $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons at midrapidity in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $π^0(η) → γγ$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $π^0$ and $\eta$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions relative to binary scaled p + p results. Yields of $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons measured in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions show similar suppression pattern to those measured in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 200$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $η/π^0$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Light nuclei production in a multiphase transport model for relativistic heavy ion collisions

Based on an enhanced multiphase transport (AMPT) model, which gives a good description of proton production with a smooth quark matter to hadronic matter transition in relativistic heavy ion collisions, we study deuteron and triton productions from the coalescence of nucleons at the kinetic freezeout of these collisions. For central Au + Au collisions at center-of-mass energies √s NN from 7.7 GeV to 200 GeV available at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we find that the yield ratio N t N p /N$^2_d$ of proton, deuteron, and triton is a monotonic function of collision energy. Our study confirms the results from similar studies based on different dynamic model, which have either no phase transition or a crossover transition between the quark-gluon plasma and the hadronic matter, that this yield ratio does not show any nonmonotonic behavior in its collision-energy dependence.

Deblurring for nuclei: 3D characteristics of heavy-ion collisions

Observables from nuclear and high-energy experiments can be degraded by detector performance and/or methodology in extracting the observables, such as of the final-state characteristics of heavy-ion collisions in relation to a coarsely estimated reaction-plane direction. We propose the use of deblurring methods, such as in optics, to correct for observable degradation. Our main focus is the restoration of triple-differential particle distributions in heavy-ion collisions. We demonstrate that these could be extracted from collision measurements following the Richardson-Lucy deblurring method from optics. We illustrate basic features of the restoration methodology in a schematic model assuming either ideal or more realistic particle detection. Here, the inferred three-dimensional (3D) distributions for collisions may be easier to interpret in terms of collision dynamics and sought properties of bulk matter than the currently employed Fourier coefficients, that combine information from different azimuthal angles relative to the reaction plane.

Free spectator nucleons in ultracentral relativistic heavy-ion collisions as a probe of neutron skin

Besides the yield ratio of free spectator neutrons produced in ultracentral 96 Zr + 96 Zr to 96 Ru + 96 Ru collisions, we propose that the yield ratio N n /N p of free spectator neutrons to protons in a single collision system at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider or the CERN Large Hadron Collider can be a more sensitive probe of the neutron-skin thickness Δrnp and the slope parameter L of the symmetry energy. Here, the idea is demonstrated based on the proton and neutron density distributions of colliding nuclei obtained from Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations, and on a Glauber model that provides information of spectator matter. The final spectator particles are produced from direct emission, clusterization by a minimum spanning tree algorithm or a Wigner function approach, and deexcitation of heavy clusters by gemini. A larger Δr np associated with a larger L value increases the isospin asymmetry of spectator matter and thus leads to a larger N n /N p , especially in ultracentral collisions where the multiplicity of free nucleons are free from the uncertainties of cluster formation and deexcitation. We have further shown that the double ratio of N n /N p in isobaric collision systems or in collisions by isotopes helps to cancel the detecting efficiency for protons. Effects from nuclear deformation and electromagnetic excitation are studied, and they are found to be subdominant compared to the expected sensitivity to Δr np .

3D structure of anisotropic flow in small collision systems at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

Here, we present (3 + 1)-dimensional [(3 + 1)D] dynamical simulations of asymmetric nuclear collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Employing a dynamical initial state model coupled to (3 + 1)D viscous relativistic hydrodynamics, we explore the rapidity dependence of anisotropic flow in the RHIC small system scan at 200 GeV center-of-mass energy. We calibrate parameters to describe central 3 He + Au collisions and make extrapolations to d + Au and p + Au collisions. Our calculations demonstrate that approximately 50% of the v 3 (p T ) difference between the measurements by the STAR and PHENIX Collaborations can be explained by the use of reference flow vectors from different rapidity regions. This emphasizes the importance of longitudinal flow decorrelation for anisotropic flow measurements in asymmetric nuclear collisions, and the need for (3 + 1)D simulations. We also present results for the beam energy dependence of particle spectra and anisotropic flow in d + Au collisions.

Measurements of second-harmonic Fourier coefficients from azimuthal anisotropies in p + p , p + Au , d + Au , and He 3 + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second- and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients v 2 and v 3 for midrapidity (|η|< 0.35 ) charged hadrons in 0%–5% central p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 200 GeV, utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Acharya et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, 024901 (2022)]. Here, this paper extends these measurements of v 2 to all centralities in p+Au, d+Au, and 3 He+Au collisions, as well as p+p collisions, as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of v 2 is quantified as the ratio R of v 2 between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for 0.5 < p T <1 and 2 T < 2.5 GeV/c. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed v 2 in most-central to midcentral d Au and 3 He+Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in p+p, p+Au, and peripheral d+Au and 3 He+Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in the AMPT model than in the experimental data. The AMPT model fails to describe the observed R for 0.5 < p T < 1 GeV/c , but there is qualitative agreement with the measurements for 2 < p T < 2.5 GeV/c.

Higher-order cumulants and correlation functions of proton multiplicity distributions in s N N = 3 GeV Au + Au collisions at the RHIC STAR experiment

Here, we report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity (y) and transverse momentum ($p_T$) region –0:9 < $\textit{y}$ < 0 and 0:4 < pT < 2:0 GeV/c in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth-order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, $p_T$, and $\textit{y}$ are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio $C_4 = C_2$ is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including Lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of $C_4/C_2$ at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

Measurement of directed flow in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV with the STAR event plane detector

In heavy-ion collision experiments, the global collectivity of final-state particles can be quantified by anisotropic flow coefficients (𝑣 𝑛 ) . The first-order flow coefficient, also referred to as the directed flow (𝑣 1 ), describes the collective sideward motion of produced particles and nuclear fragments in heavy-ion collisions. It carries information on the very early stage of the collision, especially at large pseudorapidity (𝜂), where it is believed to be generated during the nuclear passage time. Directed flow therefore probes the onset of bulk collective dynamics during thermalization, providing valuable experimental guidance to models of the pre-equilibrium stage. In 2018, the Event Plane Detector (EPD) was installed in STAR and used for the Beam Energy Scan phase-II (BES-II) data taking. The combination of EPD (2.1 < |𝜂| < 5.1) and high-statistics BES-II data enables us to extend the 𝑣 1 measurement to the forward and backward 𝜂 regions. In this paper, we present the measurement of 𝑣 1 over a wide 𝜂 range in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 27 GeV using the STAR EPD. The results of the analysis at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 GeV exhibit excellent consistency with the previous PHOBOS measurement, while elevating the precision of the overall measurement. The increased precision of the measurement also revealed finer structures in heavy-ion collisions, including a potential observation of the first-order event-plane decorrelation. Multiple physics models were compared to the experimental results. Only a transport model and a three-fluid hybrid model can reproduce a sizable 𝑣 1 at large 𝜂 as was observed experimentally. The model comparison also indicates 𝑣 1 at large 𝜂 might be sensitive to the QGP phase transition.

First Measurement of Λ c Baryon Production in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Herein we report on the first measurement of the charmed baryon Λ c ± production at midrapidity ( | y | < 1 ) in Au + Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The Λ c / D 0 [denoting ( Λ c + + Λ c - ) / ( D 0 + D ¯ 0 ) ] yield ratio is measured to be 1.08 ± 0.16 ( stat ) ± 0.26 ( sys ) in the 0%–20% most central Au + Au collisions for the transverse momentum ( p T ) range 3 < p T < 6 GeV / c . This is significantly larger than the pythia model calculations for p + p collisions. The measured Λ c / D 0 ratio, as a function of p T and collision centrality, is comparable to the baryon-to-meson ratios for light and strange hadrons in Au + Au collisions. Model calculations including coalescence hadronization for charmed baryon and meson formation reproduce the features of our measured Λ c / D 0 ratio.

Evidence of Quadrupole and Octupole Deformations in Zr 96 + Zr 96 and Ru 96 + Ru 96 Collisions at Ultrarelativistic Energies

In the hydrodynamic model description of heavy-ion collisions, the elliptic flow v 2 and triangular flow v 3 are sensitive to the quadrupole deformation β 2 and octupole deformation β 3 of the colliding nuclei. The relations between v n and β n have recently been clarified and were found to follow a simple parametric form. The STAR Collaboration has just published precision v n data from isobaric Ru 96 + Ru 96 and Zr 96 + Zr 96 collisions, where they observe large differences in central collisions v 2 , Ru > v 2 , Zr and v 3 , Ru < v 3 , Zr . Using a transport model simulation, we show that these orderings are a natural consequence of $\beta_{2,Ru} \gg \beta_{2,Zr}$ and $\beta_{3,Ru} \ll \beta_{3,Zr}$ We reproduce the centrality dependence of the v 2 ratio qualitatively and v 3 ratio quantitatively and extract values of β 2 and β 3 that are consistent with those measured at low-energy nuclear structure experiments. STAR data provide the first direct evidence of strong octupole correlations in the ground state of Zr 96 in heavy-ion collisions. Our analysis demonstrates that flow measurements in high-energy, heavy-ion collisions, especially using isobaric systems, are a new precision tool to study nuclear structure physics.

Azimuthal Angle Correlations of Muons Produced via Heavy-Flavor Decays in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

Angular correlations between heavy quarks provide a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Results are presented of a measurement of the azimuthal angle correlations between muons originating from semileptonic decays of heavy quarks produced in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions at the LHC. The muons are measured with transverse momenta and pseudorapidities satisfying p$^μ_T$ > 4 GeV and |η μ | < 2.4, respectively. The distributions of azimuthal angle separation Δ⁢Φ for muon pairs having pseudorapidity separation |Δη| > 0.8, are measured in different Pb +Pb centrality intervals and compared to the same distribution measured in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. Results are presented separately for muon pairs with opposite-sign charges, same-sign charges, and all pairs. A clear peak is observed in all Δ⁢Φ distributions at Δ⁢Φ ~ π, consistent with the parent heavy-quark pairs being produced via hard-scattering processes. The widths of that peak, characterized using Cauchy-Lorentz fits to the Δ⁢Φ distributions, are found to not vary significantly as a function of Pb +Pb collision centrality and are similar for pp and Pb +Pb collisions. This observation will provide important constraints on theoretical descriptions of heavy-quark interactions with the quark-gluon plasma.
