Simulation and visualization of face seal motion stability by means of computer generated movies

A computer aided design method for mechanical face seals is described. Based on computer simulation, the actual motion of the flexibly mounted element of the seal can be visualized. This is achieved by solving the equations of motion of this element, calculating the displacements in its various degrees of freedom vs. time, and displaying the transient behavior in the form of a motion picture. Incorporating such a method in the design phase allows one to detect instabilities and to correct undesirable behavior of the seal. A theoretical background is presented. Details of the motion display technique are described, and the usefulness of the method is demonstrated by an example of a noncontacting conical face seal.

Transmission line model of the interaction of a long metal wire with the ionosphere

An equivalent electric circuit model is used to study the electrodynamic interactions of long orbiting metallic tethers with the ionospheric plasma and, in particular, to derive current and potential profiles along bare metallic tethers. In contrast with other models, this approach is dynamic, enabling both the transient behavior of the wire and its final equilibrium state to be derived. A comparison with the results of other models indicates the advantage of the present approach, especially in those cases where the internal resistance of the tether plays a major role in determining the current and potential distributions.

A vortex-lattice method for calculating lifting-surface interference

The interference effect of closely coupled lifting surfaces was investigated. A nonsteady vortex-lattice method was applied to calculate the steady-state and nonsteady lift characteristics of configurations having interference effects. The configurations consist of low-aspect-ratio delta wings, at low and high angles of attack. Leading-edge separation and wake roll-up are simulated by a time-dependent wake-shedding procedure. For steady-state flow conditions, this numerical procedure saves a considerable amount of computer time, compared with iterative methods, and yields the same results. A better understanding of the interference effect can be gained by using the method to study the transient behavior. The nonsteady approach also offers the capability of calculating various nonsteady motions, as is demonstrated in the calculation of the longitudinal damping.

Transient catalytic combustor model

A quasi-steady gas phase and thermally thin substrate model is used to analyze the transient behavior of catalytic monolith combustors in fuel lean operation. The combustor response delay is due to the substrate thermal inertia. Fast response is favored by thin substrate, short catalytic bed length, high combustor inlet and final temperatures, and small gas channel diameters. The calculated gas and substrate temperature time history at different axial positions provides an understanding of how the catalytic combustor responds to an upstream condition change. The computed results also suggest that the gas residence times in the catalytic bed in the after bed space are correlatable with the nondimensional combustor response time. The model also performs steady state combustion calculations; and the computed steady state emission characteristics show agreement with available experimental data in the range of parameters covered. A catalytic combustor design for automotive gas turbine engine which has reasonably fast response ( 1 second) and can satisfy the emission goals in an acceptable total combustor length is possible.

Segregation effects during growth of pseudo-binary system with large liquidus-solidus separation

Results are reported for an experimental study of the seeded growth, of PbSnTe single crystals in a vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger (B-S) furnace. Profiles of axial and radial segregation of Sn are presented for crystal growth from melts with aspect ratios of 15 and 6.8; the profiles indicate intense convective mixing. A one-dimensional model of heat and mass transfer in an idealized B-S furnace with diffusion control is used to examine the importance of liquidus-solidus separation in determining growth-rate and composition transients in a pseudobinary system. It is shown that the coupling of heat and mass transfer in a pseudobinary system with a large liquidus-solidus separation causes the transient behavior in a nondilute system to differ markedly from such behavior in a dilute system and that PbSnTe crystals with a reasonable diameter can be grown under nearly convectionless conditions in a microgravity environment.

X-ray observations of Be stars

Be star binaries with neutron star companions are shown to constitute a major class of X-ray sources. Some general observational and interpretive techniques of X-ray astronomy are reviewed. Data for 12 Be/X-ray binary systems are summarized. The Be/X-ray binaries are found to be systematically wider systems, with lower-mass primaries, and with significantly more transient behavior than the 'standard' massive X-ray binaries such as Cen X-3 and SMC X-1. The difference between the two types of X-ray binaries is explained in the context of slightly different evolutionary scenarios for the progenitor binaries. The 'standard' massive X-ray binaries result from wind-mass-loss dominated evolution of very massive close binaries, while Be/X-ray binaries probably result from mass-transfer dominated evolution of systems with primary masses less than approximately 20 solar masses. The implications of the X-ray observations of Be/X-ray binaries for Be stars in general are discussed.

Low-temperature heat pipe experiment package (HEPP) for LDEF (S1001)

The principal objectives of the experiment are to determine zero-g start-up performance for conventional and diode low temperature heat pipes, to evaluate heat pipe performance in zero-g for an extended period of time, to determine zero-g transport capability of each heat pipe, and to determine diode operation, including forward conductance, turndown ratio, and transient behavior. Two heat pipes, a fixed conductance transporter heat pipe and a thermal diode heat pipe, are coupled with a radiant cooler system. Both pipes are charged with ethane. Also integrated with the radiator is a phase change material (PCM) canister which provides temperature stability during transport tests. N-heptane, which has a melting/freezing point of 182 K, is used as the PCM. The high heat capacity (28 W-hr of latent heat) provided by the canister permits high power heat pipe testing at constant temperature.

An investigation of the transient thermal analysis of spur gears

A finite element computer program is developed for evaluating the transient behavior of surface temperature in high performance spur gears. The time dimension is implemented using two and three point finite difference schemes. The different schemes are provided for the purpose of numerical stability and convergence studies. A detailed explanation of the gear cooling process leading to the establishment of a modified Blok model is also included. Other conventional models for approximating the heat transfer coefficients are available for comparison. Preliminary results are given showing snap shots of gear temperature contours at the initial stages of tooth engagement.

Special Test Methods for Batteries

Various methods are described for measuring heat generation in primary and secondary batteries as well as the specific heat of batteries and cell thermal conductance. Problems associated with determining heat generation in large batteries are examined. Special attention is given to monitoring temperature gradients in nickel cadmium cells, the use of auxiliary electrodes for conducting tests on battery charge control, evaluating the linear sweep of current from charge to discharge, and determining zero current voltage. The fast transient behavior of batteries in the microsecond range, and the electrical conductance of nickel sinters in the thickness direction are also considered. Mechanical problems experienced in the vibration of Ni-Cd batteries and tests to simulate cyclic fatigue of the steel table connecting the plates to the comb are considered. Methods of defining the distribution of forces when cells are compressed during battery packaging are also explored.

Modeling of transient heat pipe operation

The overall goal is to gain a better understanding of the transient behavior of heat pipes operating under both normal and adverse conditions. Normal operation refers to cases where the capillary structure remains fully wetted. Adverse operation occurs when drying, re-wetting, choking, noncontinuum flow, freezing, thawing etc., occur within the heat pipe. The work was redirected towards developing the capability to predict operational behavior of liquid metal heat pipes used for cooling aerodynamic structures. Of particular interest is the startup of such heat pipes from an initially frozen state such as might occur during re-entry of a space vehicle into the Earth's atmosphere or during flight of hypersonic aircraft.
