Building a Long-Lived 3D Multimode Quantum Processing Unit with TESLA Cavities

Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities, such as TESLA-shaped cavities, are excellent candidates for long-lived quantum memories. Integrating these cavities with nonlinear elements, such as transmons, enables universal quantum control; however, this integration can often introduce unwanted losses. In this talk, we present the successful integration of a long-lived 2-cell TESLA cavity with an ancillary qubit, forming a quantum processing unit (QPU) that allows for robust control while maintaining coherence. We demonstrate universal control of the QPU through various schemes, including ancilla-cavity sideband and echoed conditional displacement (ECD) methods, enabling fault-tolerant high-fidelity preparation of large Fock states and fast entanglement generation. These results illustrate the versatility and efficiency of our 3D quantum processing unit, paving the way for advanced quantum computing applications.

Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy and Differential Phase Contrast Imaging with Active Decision in Multimodal Electron Microscopy: Isotopic detection at the atomic scale

Isotopic engineering provides a powerful route to control phonon behavior in crystalline solids, enabling fundamental studies of lattice dynamics and heat transport at the atomic scale. Here, we directly visualize isotope-dependent phonon propagation in epitaxial Cr 2 O 3 using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with monochromated, high-energy-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Guided by ab initio phonon calculations, we demonstrate that optical phonon modes above 70 meV are predominantly oxygen-derived and exhibit measurable redshifts upon substitution of natural 16 O by enriched 18 O. Spatially resolved vibrational spectrum imaging reveals isotope-enriched tracer layers within Cr 2 O 3 thin films, correlating isotope concentration with phonon intensity variations and vibrational energy shifts. At the nanometer and atomic scales, vibrational EELS mapping uncovers coherent phonon propagation across isotopic interfaces, consistent with theoretical phonon density of states and dispersion relations. These results establish vibrational EELS as a quantitative probe for isotope-dependent phonon transport in materials, opening new possibilities for studying energy dissipation and lattice dynamics.

Multimodal Approaches for Leveraging Domain Knowledge with State-of-the-Art Machine Learning to Engineer Biocatalysts

This grant aimed to accelerate the development of specialized enzymes—biological catalysts essential for sustainable manufacturing and medicine—by integrating traditional laboratory evolution with cutting-edge artificial intelligence. To achieve this, we developed a suite of high-throughput sequencing tools and a centralized database to bridge the gap between a protein’s genetic "code" and its physical function. By training machine learning models on large datasets, we also demonstrated the ability to move beyond slow, trial-and-error testing to a "generative" approach, where AI can independently design new, versatile enzymes like tryptophan synthases. Ultimately, these findings demonstrate that combining laboratory data with computer-guided design enables the engineering of highly efficient biological tools with unprecedented speed and precision.

A variable-data-rate, multimode quadriphase modem.

This paper describes the design and performance of a highly versatile modulator and demodulator recently developed to facilitate the evaluation of various digital communications links. The modem is capable of either PSK or QPSK operation and can accommodate a very wide range of continuously tunable data rates (1 kbps to 30 Mbps in each of two channels). In the QPSK mode, operation is possible using either a single serial data stream (single channel operation) or using two mutually independent, unrelated, and asynchronous data streams (dual-channel operation). Integrate and dump detectors are used at the demodulator for regeneration of the data stream(s). Measurements indicate that the performance of the overall system (including the bit detectors) is within 2 dB of the theoretically optimum performance of either PSK or QPSK at any rate within the range of rates provided by the modem, and is within 1 dB of theoretical over most of the range of rates.

One-dimensional multimode and multistate oscillator: A concept

Device's voltage amplitude distribution is similar to that of standing waves on transmission line. It can be used for fast, efficient information encoding, decoding, and memory. Device operates in response to brief tone burst setting up standing-wave mode of oscillation which is unique for each possible burst frequency.

Multimode attitude and orbit control for the Atmosphere Explorer spacecraft

The orbit profile for the Atmosphere Explorer requires a velocity adjust capability of 2000 ft/sec/sec and individual maneuvers of up to 24 ft/sec in magnitude. This requirement is met by a monopropellant hydrazine propulsion subsystem which also provides, by virtue of the tank arrangement, a means of adjusting the spacecraft center of mass in orbit, thereby minimizing external disturbance torques. The attitude control subsystem is of the momentum bias type. A large internal flywheel furnishes gyroscopic stiffness and permits rapid changes in operating mode (despun to spinning mode) by controlled interchange of momentum between the flywheel and the spacecraft main body.

Multimode solar-heating system--Columbia, South Carolina

Report describes failure of six-mode pyramidal-optics system to reduce winter energy savings. Over 12 month period, control problems, energy dissipation, and high operating-energy requirements undermined system efficiency. Energy savings were maximal when system in direct space-heating or hot-water preheating mode. In least efficient mode, heat pumps alternatively mingled storage or collector energy, and space heating was provided by electric heat strip.

Stellar convection. II - A multimode numerical solution for convection in spheres

A stable, equilibrium solution for convection in a self-gravitating sphere of Boussinesq fluid was computed by using a modal analysis in which the theta, phi dependence of the fluid is expanded in a set of 168 spherical harmonics. The temperature, velocity, and convective flux of the fluid as well as the kinetic and thermal energy spectra as functions of wavelength are computed. The spectra are found to be in agreement with both experimental observations and analytic scaling laws. The dynamics of the energy cascade is examined by computing the ratio of the amount of energy dissipation at a particular wavelength to the amount of energy produced at that same wavelength. It is found that there is only a slight cascade of kinetic energy to smaller wavelengths but a large cascade of thermal energy.
