Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop

The Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop was held at the Ohio Aerospace Institute, Brook Park, Ohio cosponsored by NASA Lewis Research Center and the Ohio Aerospace Institute, August 15-19, 1994. The workshop consisted of classes, vendor demonstrations, and paper sessions. The classes and vendor demonstrations provided participants with the information on widely used tools for thermal and fluids analysis. The paper sessions provided a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among thermal and fluids analysis. Paper topics included advances a uses of established thermal and fluids computer codes (such as SINDA and TRASYS) as well as unique modeling techniques and applications.

Insertion Loss and Noise-Temperature Contribution of High-Temperature Superconducting Bandpass Filters Centered at 2.3 and 8.45 GHz

Two superconducting Tl-Ca-Cu-Ba-O bandpass filters were fabricated for JPL by Superconductor Technologies Incorporated, Santa Barbara, California. The filters were designed to operate at 2.3 GHz (S-band) with a 0.5-dB bandwidth of 60 MHz and at 8.45 GHz (X-band) with a 0.5-dB bandwidth of 150 MHz. The structure selected for both filters incorporates half-wavelength thin-film resonators in a stripline configuration. The S-band filter uses an edge-coupled interdigital design and the X-band filter uses an end-coupled design. The insertion loss and the noise-temperature contribution were measured at 12 K for both filters.

Erosion, Corrosion and Foreign Object Damage Effects in Gas Turbines [Les consequences de l'endommagement des turbines I gaz par erosion, corrosion et objets étrangers]

The Conference Proceedings contains 31 papers presented at the Propulsion and Energetics Panel Symposium on Erosion, Corrosion and Foreign Object Damage Effects in Gas Turbines which was held from 25-28th April 1994, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Technical Evaluation Report and the Keynote Address are included at the beginning and discussions follow most papers. The Symposium was arranged in the following Sessions: Operational Experience and Requirements (7); Deposition and Erosion (7); Foreign Object Damage (5); Coatings, Repairs and Materials Aspects - 1 (4); Coatings, Repairs and Materials Aspects - 2 (7); and Testing and Certification Procedures (1).

Development, Characterization, and Validation of Elevated-Temperature Constitutive Models: Deformation and Damage

This report provides a brief review of experimentally observed hereditary and nonhereditary material behavior along with background information on standard as well as advanced internal state variable constitutive modeling at elevated temperature. A description of exploratory, characterization, and validation testing is presented along with a detailed outline of what constitutes “sufficient” data content (i.e., quality and quantity) for developing or enhancing, characterizing, and validating a particular sophisticated nonlinear time- and history-dependent (hereditary) class of constitutive models known as GVIPS (generalized viscoplasticity with potential structure). The tests described are necessary to reveal a material’s behavior in the reversible (or viscoelastic) and irreversible (or viscoplastic) regimes, for the identification of both deformation and damage model parameters. Results presented are primarily for metallic materials. In all cases, both uniaxial and multiaxial tests are described, and the linkage between the specific tests and the parameters within the model that can be characterized from the results of these tests are also discussed. Discussion is also provided relative to the role information management must play relative to material data collection, analysis, maintenance, and dissemination. The need for such an information system is particularly important as both analyst and designer move toward utilizations of sophisticated, nonlinear time- and history dependent (hereditary) constitutive models. Lastly, the concept of state space and its utility in understanding and establishing constitutive models is addressed throughout. The intent behind this document is to help both the modeler and experimentalist understand each other’s specific points of view and provide guidance for both model development and characterization. Emphasis has been placed on providing the mechanician with information regarding how tests are performed and what issues to be aware of when interpreting results. It is hoped that experimentalists will take away a new perspective on the types of information that modelers and analysts are looking for from them.

Constitutive Modeling
