Dual frequency microwave reflex feed

A dual frequency feed system for a Cassegrainian antenna is provided wherein two frequencies may be transmitted along a single boresight or received simultaneously using a single antenna.

A robot conditioned reflex system modeled after the cerebellum.

Reduction of a theory of cerebellar function to computer software for the control of a mechanical manipulator. This reduction is achieved by considering the cerebellum, along with the higher-level brain centers which control it, as a type of finite-state machine with input entering the cerebellum via mossy fibers from the periphery and output from the cerebellum occurring via Purkinje cells. It is hypothesized that the cerebellum learns by an error-correction system similar to Perceptron training algorithms. An electromechanical model of the cerebellum is then developed for the control of a mechanical arm. The problem of modeling the granular layer which selects the set of parallel fibers which are active at any instant of time is considered, and a relevance matrix is constructed to model the relative degree of influence which mossy fibers from the various joints have on the sets of granule cells unique to each joint.

Competition between cutaneous vasodilator and vasoconstrictor reflexes in man

A two-part experiment was carried out on seven men to determine whether skin will respond to increased neurogenic vasoconstrictor activity during heating. The latter was induced by lower body negative pressure of -50 mm Hg applied for 5 of each 15 min in 12 studies with constant, neutral skin temperature (32.2-34.4 C) in a 40-min control period and with skin temperature held at 38 C for 40-70 min. We conclude that during heating, skin retains the ability to vasoconstrict but that this vasoconstriction cannot completely override heat-induced vasodilatation.

Conditioned reflex activity of rats at later periods after the end of flight aboard the Kosmos-605 biosatellite

The aftereffects of spaceflight on the higher nervous activity of rats were studied. A five lane maze with a feeding terminal was used to check such factors as transfer of experience, the habit and speed of reaching the goal in the maze, long term memory, and the dynamics of errors. During the 3rd-7th postflight week, functional disturbances in the rat HNA were manifested in the deterioration of the capacity for the transfer of experience and for locating the feeding compartment in the maze, thus indicating a general decrease of work capacity. The increased number of errors and failures pointed to exhaustion of higher nervous processes and to the weakened functional activity of the brain.

Measurement of non-Maxwellian electron velocity distributions in a reflex discharge

The results of a ruby laser Thomson scattering study of the space and time-resolved electron velocity distributions in a pulsed Penning discharge in hydrogen are presented. Electron densities were to the order of 10 to the 13th/cu cm and temperatures were roughly 3 eV. This point is just prior to the cessation of the discharge ohmic heating pulse. For magnetic strengths less than 200 G, Maxwellian distributions were found over an energy range six times thermal energy. Temperatures agreed with Langmuir probe data. For fields of 450 G, chaotic plasma potentials were observed to be unstable and the Thomson scattering showed that the electron velocity distributions had central temperatures of 2 eV and wing temperatures of 15-12 eV.

Morphological changes in neurons of the hind limb reflex arc during long term immobilization

Twelve adult rabbits were immobilized for 9 to 31 days, followed by histological study of the nerve processes of lumbar vertebra 7 and sacral vertebra 1, the sciatic nerve and the motor endings of the thigh muscles. In the spinal ganglia, dystrophic changes of increasing severity with immobilization time were found, including pericellular edema, vacuolized neuroplasm, pycnotic changes, cytolysis and destruction. Chromatophilic matter decreased and was partly bleached, and amitotic division occurred. A portion of the sciatic nerve fibers were argentophilic, and some fragmentary decomposition occurred. Considerable dystrophic changes occurred in the motor nerve endings.

Detection of amblyopia utilizing generated retinal reflexes

Investigation confirmed that GRR images can be consistently obtained and that these images contain information required to detect the optical inequality of one eye compared to the fellow eye. Digital analyses, electro-optical analyses, and trained observers were used to evaluate the GRR images. Two and three dimensional plots were made from the digital analyses results. These plotted data greatly enhanced the GRR image content, and it was possible for nontrained observers to correctly identify normal vs abnormal ocular status by viewing the plots. Based upon the criteria of detecting equality or inequality of ocular status of a person's eyes, the trained observer correctly identified the ocular status of 90% of the 232 persons who participated in this program.

Reflexive Avoidance Of Obstacles By Robots

Array of sensors at elbow of robotic manipulator detects obstacles. Outputs of sensors processed into synthetic "force field" around each obstacle. Algorithm controlling manipulator uses "force field" to maneuver manipulator arm around each obstacle.
