As part of our investigation into the process optimization of 2,6-diaminopyrazine-1-oxide (DAPO), small-scale sensitivity testing (impact, friction, and ESD) was conducted on the precursor, N-nitroso-bis(cyanomethyl)amine (NBCMA). NBCMA exhibited moderate sensitivity to friction, whereas no sensitivity to impact or spark was observed.

We report results from searches for new physics models through electron recoils using data collected by the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment during its first two science runs, with a total exposure of 4.2 tonne−years. The observed data are consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Constraints are derived for electromagnetic interactions of solar neutrinos, solar axionlike particles (ALPs), mirror dark matter, and the absorption of bosonic dark matter candidates. The inverse Primakoff process for 57 Fe deexcitation solar ALPs is considered for the first time. These results represent the most stringent constraints to date on keV-scale Primakoff and 57 Fe solar ALPs, bosonic dark matter, mirror dark matter, and neutrino millicharge, while remaining competitive for the other signal models investigated.
The Aerogel Lecture Series unveils the extraordinary potential of aerogels—a class of highly porous solid materials derived from a gel in which the liquid is replaced by gas while maintaining the self-assembled three-dimensional structure. This video presentation features Dr. Mary Carroll and Dr. Ann Anderson from Union College.
This work proposes a standard reference material (SRM) for measurements of refractive index in the infrared spectral region (1–12 μm). The purpose of this material is to enable cross-method comparison of refractive index data obtained through minimum deviation, ellipsometry, interferometry, and prism coupling techniques. This will allow vendors and metrology laboratories, regardless of which technique they employ, to certify that their measurements meet required levels of accuracy, precision, and repeatability. Drawing on foundational work by Tilton at the National Bureau of Standards, a figure of merit for candidate SRM materials is outlined, and three materials are selected for further evaluation. Ultimately, barium fluoride is proposed as the most suitable SRM for the infrared spectral region, based on its broad transmission range, chemical and mechanical stability, low temperature dependence of refractive index, and well-characterized dispersion behavior.
Ytterbium disilicate (Yb2Si2O7) is a state-of-the-art topcoat material used in environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) to protect SiC-SiC composites from water vapor corrosion in gas turbine engines. However, it’s degradation by thermochemical and thermomechanical particle interactions may limit its use in next generation engine systems. Several static furnace tests have been performed on Yb2Si2O7 to elucidate methods of degradation, although dynamic testing in an engine-relevant environment has not been carried out. Ultimately, testing and evaluation of materials that incorporates all environmental damage modes will allow for an accurate assessment of long-term durability and operating lifetime. This work details the investigation of particle-induced erosion and corrosion of Yb2Si2O7 in NASA Glenn’s Erosion Burner Rig Facility. Coating durability was investigated as a function of test temperature, particle size, and deposition rate. Thermal cycling was also incorporated into testing to determine the interplay of heating/cooling cycles with particle degradation. Overall, these analyses will be used to determine coating robustness in an engine relevant environment.

A photovolataic power system with a battery storage capability is analyzed. A dual battery current control concept is proposed, which enables the battery to either supply or accept power depending upon system environment and load conditions. A simulation of the power system, including the battery current control, is developed and evaluated. The evaulation demonstrate the visbility of the battery control concept of switch the battery from a charge to discharge mode and back as required by load and environmental conditions. An acceptable system operation is demonstrated over the entire insolation range. Additionally, system sensitivity, bandwidth, and damping characteristics of the battery control are shown to be acceptable for a projected hardware implementation.
Cryogenic electric machines are a promising technology for multi megawatt electric aircraft drivetrains. Superconducting stators that make use of low AC loss superconducting wires are considered to be a key component for these cryogenic machines. NASA has undertaken 6-year technical challenge to address this need by designing a 5 MW superconducting motor and cryogenic drive and developing multi-MW prototypes. This poster shares the lessons learned from a completed design study that evaluated several configurations of a 5 MW cryogenic motor for this application. The lessons are drawn from a qualitative study of 16 configurations and a quantitative study of 8 down selected configurations. The quantitative study involved using a motor design code based on analytical calculations (electromagnetic, thermofluid, mechanical, and motor sizing) to determine each configuration’s Pareto front of total efficiency and total specific power. This poster builds upon preliminary results that were previously presented by (1) reporting final results based on a revised design code for each configuration, including a considerable increase in fidelity for a novel radial flux motor and (2) making a down selection of the configuration for future detailed design and demonstration and documenting the rationale for the selection.
The latest upgrade to the Aerospace Energy Systems Laboratory (AESL) is described. The AESL is a distributed digital system consisting of a central system and battery servicing stations connected by a high-speed serial data bus. The entire system is located in two adjoining rooms; the bus length is approximately 100 ft. Each battery station contains a digital processor, data acquisition, floppy diskette data storage, and operator interfaces. The operator initiates a servicing task and thereafter the battery station monitors the progress of the task and terminates it at the appropriate time. The central system provides data archives, manages the data bus, and provides a timeshare interface for multiple users. The system also hosts software production tools for the battery stations and the central system.
