Czochralski growth of crystals - Simple models for growth rate and interface shape

A simple model for the crystal growth by the Czochralski (CZ) process has been proposed based on semiquantitative arguments. The model provides empirical relationships for the dependence of the pulling rate and the interface shape on the important process variables such as crystal radius, crucible temperature, height of the melt level, and the height of the exposed portion of the crucible wall. The parameters of the model can be evaluated by matching the results obtained from a detailed mathematical model of the CZ process or from extensive experimental data. The model has, therefore, the potential application for determining the best process conditions and for on-line control and optimization of the crystal puller to grow crystals with constant diameter and nearly planar interface.

State transition storyboards: A tool for designing the Goldstone solar system radar data acquisition system user interface software

Effective user interface design in software systems is a complex task that takes place without adequate modeling tools. By combining state transition diagrams and the storyboard technique of filmmakers, State Transition Storyboards were developed to provide a detailed modeling technique for the Goldstone Solar System Radar Data Acquisition System human-machine interface. Illustrations are included with a description of the modeling technique.

User interface and payload command and control

Two tasks comprise this overall effort. The first is concerned with developing a modular, machine independent workstation design, science operations interface language and interaction techniques. Design concepts and prototype demonstration of a state of the art prototype workstation are to be based on defining user requirements by determining user interface modes, reflecting needs in space and on ground. The second task aims at generating a command and control system design concept for supporting telescience - a concept for independent science user operations within an operations envelope.

Nonlinear shell analyses of the SRB/ETA ring interface

Two-dimensional shell models of the portion of the solid rocket booster (SRB) with the external tank attachment (ETA) ring were developed using the STAGSC-1 computer code. These analyses were performed in support of the SRB recertification program underway at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. The purpose of these analyses is to calculate the overall stress and deflection distributions for the SRB/ETA ring interface. An overview of the SRB/ETA ring geometry is presented followed by a discussion of the analysis methods and finite element models. Finally, the nonlinear structural response of the SRB/ETA ring interface is discussed.

The Space Transportation System/Spartan interfaces - An approach for low cost spacecraft

Using the Spartan 101 payload as an example this paper outlines the process of flying a low-cost spacecraft as a customer aboard the Space Shuttle, concentrating on the physical and organizational interfaces to the Johnson Space Center (JSC) and the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). These interfaces fall into four classes, namely, JSC safety, KSC safety, JSC operations and KSC operations.

A natural language interface for real-time dialogue in the flight domain

A flight expert system (FLES) is being developed to assist pilots in monitoring, diagnosisng and recovering from in-flight faults. To provide a communications interface between the flight crew and FLES, a natural language interface, has been implemented. Input to NALI is processed by three processors: (1) the semantic parser, (2) the knowledge retriever, and (3) the response generator. The architecture of NALI has been designed to process both temporal and nontemporal queries. Provisions have also been made to reduce the number of system modifications required for adapting NALI to other domains. This paper describes the architecture and implementation of NALI.

Cellular interface morphologies in directional solidification. II - The effect of grain boundaries

A singular perturbation analysis valid for small grain-boundary slopes is used with the one-sided model for solidification to show that grain boundaries introduce imperfections into the symmetry of the developing cellular interfaces which rupture the junction between the family of planar shapes and the bifurcating cellular families. Undulating interfaces are shown to develop first near grain boundaries, and to evolve with decreasing temperature gradient either by a smooth transition from the almost planar family or by a sudden jump to moderate-amplitude cellular forms, depending on the growth rate.

The intelligent user interface for NASA's advanced information management systems

NASA has initiated the Intelligent Data Management Project to design and develop advanced information management systems. The project's primary goal is to formulate, design and develop advanced information systems that are capable of supporting the agency's future space research and operational information management needs. The first effort of the project was the development of a prototype Intelligent User Interface to an operational scientific database, using expert systems and natural language processing technologies. An overview of Intelligent User Interface formulation and development is given.

The crustal dynamics intelligent user interface anthology

The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has initiated an Intelligent Data Management (IDM) research effort which has, as one of its components, the development of an Intelligent User Interface (IUI). The intent of the IUI is to develop a friendly and intelligent user interface service based on expert systems and natural language processing technologies. The purpose of such a service is to support the large number of potential scientific and engineering users that have need of space and land-related research and technical data, but have little or no experience in query languages or understanding of the information content or architecture of the databases of interest. This document presents the design concepts, development approach and evaluation of the performance of a prototype IUI system for the Crustal Dynamics Project Database, which was developed using a microcomputer-based expert system tool (M. 1), the natural language query processor THEMIS, and the graphics software system GSS. The IUI design is based on a multiple view representation of a database from both the user and database perspective, with intelligent processes to translate between the views.

User interface devices for mission control

The Mission Control Center (MCC) at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas, is being upgraded with new technology engineering/scientific workstations. These workstations will replace the existing consoles and will emulate the present hardware input and display media. The workstations will be using new and different input devices for the flight controller to interact with the workstation and mainframes. This paper presents the results of the User Interface survey conducted by the Workstation Prototype Lab (WPL). The WPL offered the opportunity for users to do hands-on evaluations of a number of user interface options prototyped by lab personnel.

SWAN: An expert system with natural language interface for tactical air capability assessment

SWAN is an expert system and natural language interface for assessing the war fighting capability of Air Force units in Europe. The expert system is an object oriented knowledge based simulation with an alternate worlds facility for performing what-if excursions. Responses from the system take the form of generated text, tables, or graphs. The natural language interface is an expert system in its own right, with a knowledge base and rules which understand how to access external databases, models, or expert systems. The distinguishing feature of the Air Force expert system is its use of meta-knowledge to generate explanations in the frame and procedure based environment.

Integration of finite element modeling with solid modeling through a dynamic interface

Finite element modeling is dominated by geometric modeling type operations. Therefore, an effective interface to geometric modeling requires access to both the model and the modeling functionality used to create it. The use of a dynamic interface that addresses these needs through the use of boundary data structures and geometric operators is discussed.
