Imaging a terahertz superfluid plasmon in a two-dimensional superconductor

The superconducting gap defines the fundamental energy scale for the emergence of dissipationless transport and collective phenomena in a superconductor. In layered high-temperature cuprate superconductors, in which the Cooper pairs are confined to weakly coupled two-dimensional (2D) copper–oxygen (CuO 2 ) planes, terahertz (THz) spectroscopy at subgap millielectronvolt (meV) energies has provided crucial insights into the collective superfluid response perpendicular to the superconducting layers. However, within the CuO 2 planes, the collective superfluid response manifests as plasmonic charge oscillations at energies far exceeding the superconducting gap, obscured by strong dissipation. Here, in this study, we present spectroscopic evidence of a below-gap, 2D superfluid plasmon in few-layer Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x and spatially resolve its deeply subdiffractive THz electrodynamics. By placing the superconductor in the near field of a spintronic THz emitter, we reveal this distinct resonance—absent in bulk samples and observed only in the superconducting phase—and determine its plasmonic nature by mapping the geometric anisotropy and dispersion. Crucially, these measurements offer a direct view of the momentum-dependent and frequency-dependent superconducting transition in two dimensions.

Three-chamber electrochemical reactor for selective lithium extraction from brine

Efficient lithium recovery from geothermal brines is crucial for the battery industry. Current electrochemical separation methods struggle with the simultaneous presence of Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ because these cations are similar to Li + , making it challenging to separate effectively. We address these challenges with a three-chamber reactor featuring a polymer porous solid electrolyte in the middle layer. This design improves the transference number of Li + (t Li+ ) by 2.1 times compared to the two-chamber reactor and also reduces the chlorine evolution reaction, a common side reaction in electrochemical lithium extraction, to only 6.4% in Faradaic Efficiency. Employing a lithium-ion conductive glass ceramic (LICGC) membrane, the reactor achieved high t Li+ of 97.5% in LiOH production from simulated brine, while the concentrations of Na + K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ are below the detection limit. Electrochemical experiments and surface analysis elucidated the cation transport mechanism, highlighting the impact of Na + on Li + migration at the LICGC interface.

Two-mode bosonic quoctit for high energy physics

In this work, we study a two-mode bosonic encoding of a quoctit inside a non-Abelian group-structured constellation of coherent states. This work is motivated by the importance of non-Abelian symmetry in particle physics and the desire to have transversal non-Abelian logical gates. We use the previously developed 2 T constellation of states used to encode a so-called 2 T qutrit. The fidelity of the 2 T quoctit is benchmarked against other bosonic qudits for different noise models and find it compare favorably when power constraints are considered. This paves the way for the construction of higher-dimensional qudits (e.g., a quicosotetrit with 2 T group structure) in bosonic systems with practical applications in quantum simulations of particle physics.

Reversible Ferroelectric Polarization Modulation of Chiral Molecular Ferroelectrics by Circularly Polarized Light

Abstract The optical modulation of ferroelectric polarization constitutes a transformative, non‐contact strategy for the precise manipulation of ferroelectric properties, heralding advancements in optically stimulated ferroelectric devices. Despite its potential, progress in this domain is constrained by material limitations and the intricate nature of the underlying mechanisms. Recent studies have achieved efficient regulation of ferroelectric polarization and thermal conductivity in chiral ferroelectric thin films through the application of left‐ and right‐handed circularly polarized light (LCP and RCP). Differential absorption of circularly polarized light (CPL) induces nonequilibrium carrier dynamics, generating distinctive interfacial electrostatic fields that enable precise control of ultrathin ferroelectric films. For (R)‐BINOL−DIPASi and (S)‐BINOL−DIPASi (C 26 H 26 O 2 Si), polarization changes surpass 23%, exhibiting opposite response under LCP and RCP excitation. In R chiral films, remnant polarization decreases from 1.05 µC cm − 2 under LCP to 0.85 µC cm − 2 under RCP, whereas in S chiral films, polarization increases from 0.85 µC cm − 2 under LCP to 0.98 µC cm − 2 under RCP. This reversible modulation facilitates reliable switching between ON and OFF states, presenting the potential of chiral ferroelectric materials for flexible, high‐speed integrated photonic sensor technologies.

Alumina–Titania Nanolaminate Condensers for Hot Programmable Catalysis

Nanolaminates composed of thin alternating layers of Al2O 3 and TiO 2 (ATO) were engineered by using atomic layer deposition as the dielectric material for a Pt-on-carbon catalytic condenser. Investigation assessed synthesis parameters including the deposition temperature, Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 layer thicknesses, total number of layers, and a capping Al 2 O 3 layer on the maximum charge accumulation in the Pt catalyst. The highest capacitance ATO configuration demonstrated a specific capacitance of ∼1200 nF/cm 2 with working voltages of ±5 V, enabling the storage of 4 × 10 13 electrons or holes per cm 2 at room temperature. The ATO devices exhibited enhanced capacitance at elevated temperatures of up to 400 °C, suggesting the suitability of these materials for high-temperature applications. Adsorption of carbon monoxide on the Pt/C-ATO device characterized by grazing incidence infrared spectroscopy showed changes in the surface binding energy of 13.1 ± 0.8 kJ/mol for an applied external voltage bias of ±1 V.

Wyoming Trails Carbon Hub (WyoTCH)

The Wyoming Trails Carbon Hub (WyoTCH) project completed a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for a commercial-scale, open-access carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) transport pipeline in Wyoming under U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Award DEFE0032347, funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Carbon Capture Technology Program and administered by the National Energy Technology Laboratory. The project’s approach of designing a multi-source, multi-destination pipeline, rather than a dedicated line serving a single project, would lower the barrier to entry for individual CO 2 projects. The projects would leverage Wyoming's concentrated industrial and power generation CO 2 sources, its existing CO 2 pipeline infrastructure, and its extensive CO 2 storage and utilization capacity. This is the project's final technical report.

Eliminating chemo-mechanical degradation of lithium solid-state battery cathodes during >4.5 V cycling using amorphous Nb2O5 coatings

Abstract Lithium solid-state batteries offer improved safety and energy density. However, the limited stability of solid electrolytes (SEs), as well as irreversible structural and chemical changes in the cathode active material, can result in inferior electrochemical performance, particularly during high-voltage cycling (>4.3 V vs Li/Li + ). Therefore, new materials and strategies are needed to stabilize the cathode/SE interface and preserve the cathode material structure during high-voltage cycling. Here, we introduce a thin (~5 nm) conformal coating of amorphous Nb 2 O 5 on single-crystal LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 cathode particles using rotary-bed atomic layer deposition (ALD). Full cells with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 anodes and Nb 2 O 5 -coated cathodes demonstrate a higher initial Coulombic efficiency of 91.6% ± 0.5% compared to 82.2% ± 0.3% for the uncoated samples, along with improved rate capability (10x higher accessible capacity at 2C rate) and remarkable capacity retention during extended cycling (99.4% after 500 cycles at 4.7 V vs Li/Li + ). These improvements are associated with reduced cell polarization and interfacial impedance for the coated samples. Post-cycling electron microscopy analysis reveals that the Nb 2 O 5 coating remains intact and prevents the formation of spinel and rock-salt phases, which eliminates intra-particle cracking of the single-crystal cathode material. These findings demonstrate a potential pathway towards stable and high-performance solid-state batteries during high-voltage operation.

Conformer-Specific Dissociation Dynamics in Dimethyl Methylphosphonate Radical Cation

The dynamics of the dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) radical cation after production by strong field adiabatic ionization have been investigated. Pump-probe experiments using strong field 1300 nm pulses to adiabatically ionize DMMP and a 800 nm non-ionizing probe induce coherent oscillations of the parent ion yield with a period of about 45 fs. The yields of two fragments, PO 2 C 2 H 7 + and PO 2 CH 4 + , oscillate approximately out of phase with the parent ion, but with a slight phase shift relative to each other. We use electronic structure theory and nonadiabatic surface hopping dynamics to understand the underlying dynamics. The results show that while the cation oscillates on the ground state along the P=O bond stretch coordinate, the probe excites population to higher electronic states that can lead to fragments PO 2 C 2 H 7 + and PO 2 CH 4 + . The computational results combined with the experimental observations indicate that the two conformers of DMMP that are populated under experimental conditions exhibit different dynamics after being excited to the higher electronic states of the cation leading to different dissociation products. These results highlight the potential usefulness of these pump-probe measurements as a tool to study conformer-specific dynamics in molecules of biological interest.

First in operando transient grating spectroscopy measurements on tungsten during high flux plasma operation in PISCES-RF

This work details the construction and first in operando transient grating spectroscopy measurements conducted on PISCES-RF during plasma operation. A preliminary study on a tungsten sample with varied plasma species (Ar and D 2 ), ion flux (4 × 10 21 to 6 × 10 22 ion/m 2 /s), ion energy (5 to 80 eV), and surface temperature (20 to 200 °C) is presented. Prior to plasma exposure, the thermal diffusivity and surface acoustic wave (SAW) speed, (6.9 ± 0.2) × 10 −5 m 2 /s and (2.66 ± 0.02) km/s, were measured in situ with a thermal grating period of 12.5 μm. During Ar plasma exposure, these two quantities vary according to the sample surface temperature. At low flux and varied ion energy, D 2 plasma exposure also results in thermal diffusivity and SAW speed varying with surface temperature alone. At high flux, D 2 plasma exposure results in no convincing change to the thermal diffusivity, but the SAW speed is reduced. After returning to 20 °C, post plasma exposures, the thermal diffusivity and SAW speed almost recover to the initial value prior to exposure.

Anode-less Solid-State Li–S Batteries Enabled by Fe-Stabilized Polysulfides

Anode-less solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (SSLSBs) with lithium sulfide (Li 2 S) as the cathode promise a high energy density and ease of manufacturing. However, Li 2 S is plagued by poor conductivity, sluggish activation kinetics, and a poor cycle life. Here, in this study, we report an FeCl 3 -activated Li 2 S (FLS) cathode with solid-state polysulfide intermediates generated through a redox reaction between FeCl 3 and Li 2 S. This strategy is shown to boost the electrical conductivity of Li 2 S by 7 orders of magnitude and lower the activation barrier. During cycling, Fe plays a significant role in stabilizing the highly active polysulfide species, contributing to the exceptional electrochemical performance. The FLS cathode achieves 80% capacity retention over 500 cycles with >99% Li 2 S utilization. Furthermore, a Li-metal-free (anode-less) full cell retained over 80% of its initial capacity after 240 cycles. This work underscores the promise of leveraging Fe-stabilized polysulfides in enabling high-energy, long-lasting, solid-state Li-S batteries.

Electrochemical Behavior of Cerium at an Indium Tin-Doped Oxide Electrode in Acidic Media

The redox behavior and speciation of cerium at mesoporous thin films composed of nanoparticles of indium tin-doped oxide (nITO) electrodes were characterized in pH 4.8, 0.1 M acetate buffer and both 0.1 and 1 M HNO 3 using electrochemical techniques and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Anodic deposition of ceria species from Ce(III) to the nITO electrode was achieved under all solvent conditions via spontaneous condensation of electrochemically generated ceric hydroxide species. In 1 M nitric acid, the rate of CeO 2 dissolution is on the same order as CeO 2 deposition, resulting in negligible amounts of CeO 2 electrodeposited at the nITO surface. The cathodic stripping of CeO 2 from the nITO substrate deposited in 0.1 M nitric acid or pH 4.8 acetate buffer follows a 2-step process where Ce(IV)-oxide is initially reduced to an unstable Ce(III)-oxide species that rapidly undergoes acid catalyzed dissolution to yield soluble Ce(III) (aq) . These findings provide a foundation for the pH and anodic potential controlled deposition of CeO 2 thin films to ITO substrates, which can aid in the development of materials composed of ceria. As a result, they can also be used to infer likely analogous actinide redox behavior and speciation at these electrodes.

Light-triggered electrochemical biosensor using singlet oxygen for self-powered operation and glucose detection

This study introduces a light-activated sensing strategy that integrates photosensitization with electrochemical detection. The sensor employs Eosin Y, a photosensitizer that generates singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) via type II photosensitization. Immobilized within a thin polymer matrix on a carbon working electrode, Eosin Y produces 1 O 2 , under green light (520 nm) illumination, initiating a redox process that yields a measurable current. To incorporate biosensing capabilities and enable self-powered operation, this 1 O 2 – mediated process was coupled with glucose oxidase (GOx) to construct a fully operational glucose biosensor. The addition of glucose reverses the current flow by causing GOx to compete for electrons, with the resulting current magnitude correlating with glucose concentration providing a sensitive measure of glucose. The biosensor, as proof-of-principle, demonstrated excellent performance over a range of glucose concentrations (0–73 mM), achieving a detection limit (LOD) of 2.8 mM for steady state photocurrent under oxygen-saturated conditions. This platform leverages light and 1 O 2 as stimuli for tunable, on-demand signal control, offering a novel approach for adaptive, real-time biosensing technologies.

Zero-field J-spectroscopy of quadrupolar nuclei

Abstract Zero- to ultralow-field nuclear magnetic resonance (ZULF NMR) allows molecular structure elucidation via measurement of electron-mediated spin-spinJ-couplings. This study examines zero-fieldJ-spectra from molecules with quadrupolar nuclei, exemplified by solutions of various isotopologues of ammonium cations. The spectra reveal differences between various isotopologues upon extracting preciseJ-coupling values from pulse-acquire measurements. A primary isotope effect,$$\triangle J=\left({\gamma }_{{}^{14}{{{{{\rm{N}}}}}}}/{\gamma }_{{}^{15}{{{{{\rm{N}}}}}}}\right){J}_{{}^{15}{{{{{\rm{N}}}}}}{{{{{\rm{H}}}}}}}-{J}_{{}^{14}{{{{{\rm{N}}}}}}{{{{{\rm{H}}}}}}}\approx -58$$ △ J = γ 14 N / γ 15 N J 15 N H − J 14 N H ≈ − 58 mHz, is deduced by analysis of the proton-nitrogenJ-coupling ratios. This study points toward further experiments with symmetric cations containing quadrupolar nuclei, promising applications in biomedicine, energy storage, and benchmarking quantum chemistry calculations.

Electron temperature relations and the direct N, O, Ne, S, and Ar abundances of 49 959 star-forming galaxies in DESI data release 2

We present the largest direct-method abundance catalogue of galaxies to date, containing measurements of 49 959 star-forming galaxies at z<0.96 from DESI (Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) data release 2. By directly measuring electron temperatures across multiple ionization zones, we provide constraints on a number of electron temperature relations. Using the temperature measurements, we derive reliable abundances for N, O, Ne, S, and Ar, and measure the evolution of abundances and abundance ratios of as a function of metallicity and other galaxy properties. Our measurements include direct oxygen abundances for 49 507 galaxies, leading to the discovery of the two most metal-poor galaxies in the nearby Universe, with oxygen abundances of 12+log⁡(O/H)=6.77−0.03+0.03 dex (1.2 per cent Z⊙) and 12+log⁡(O/H)=6.81−0.04+0.04 dex (1.3 per cent Z⊙). We identify a rare outlier population of 24 galaxies with high-N/O ratios at low metallicity, reminiscent of galaxy abundances observed in the early Universe. We find the Ne/O ratio is constant at low metallicity but increases gradually at 12+log(O/H)>8.105±0.004 dex. We show that the S/O and Ar/O abundance ratios are strongly correlated, consistent with the expected additional Type Ia enrichment channel for S and Ar. In this work, we present an initial survey of the key properties of the sample, with this data set serving as a foundation for extensive future work on galaxy abundances at low redshift.

Interlayer Design for Halide Electrolytes in All‐Solid‐State Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract All‐solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are promising for transportation electrification due to their superior safety and high energy density. Lithium halide electrolytes provide excellent processing flexibility, high ionic conductivity, and anodic stability (>4.1 V), making them highly compatible with high‐voltage cathodes, surpassing sulfide electrolytes (<2.1 V). Nevertheless, halide electrolytes suffer from low cathodic stability and form an electronically conductive interphase with lithium, resulting in a critical current density (CCD) of nearly zero. Herein, Li 3 YbCl 6 electrolytes are synthesized that are kinetically stable with lithium by forming an electronic insulating solid electrolyte interphase. Guided by critical overpotential criteria, a PI 3 interlayer is designed that transforms into Li 6 PI 3 upon contact with lithium, substantially reducing the interfacial resistance of Li 3 YbCl 6 against lithium to 34 Ω and achieving a high critical overpotential of 114 mV. By substituting Yb with Lu, Li 3 LuCl 6 electrolytes with Li 6 PI 3 interlayers reach a CCD of 1.0 mA cm −2 at a capacity of 1.0 mAh cm −2 , comparable to sulfide electrolytes but with higher oxidation stability. Additionally, Li 6 PI 3 enables stable cycling of Li//Li cells with Li 3 LuCl 6 electrolytes at 0.5 mA cm −2 for 400 cycles and maintains 86.5% capacity in Li//LiCoO 2 cells after 220 cycles at 30 °C, paving the way for high‐performance ASSLMBs.

Unraveling interphase-driven failure pathways in LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/graphite pouch cells

LiMnxFe1−xPO4 (LMFP) is a promising high-voltage, thermally stable, and earth-abundant cathode material, yet its practical application is limited by interphase instability and Mn dissolution. In this work, we systematically evaluate LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/graphite pouch cells using three electrolyte formulations including control carbonate electrolyte, control + 2 wt% vinylene carbonate (VC), and control + 2 wt% VC + 1 wt% 1,3,2-dioxathiolane 2,2-dioxide (DTD), to establish how electrolyte composition governs interphase chemistry and long-term degradation. Electrochemical testing shows that both additives are preferentially reduced prior to ethylene carbonate (EC) during cell formation, generating robust cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers that suppress gas evolution and raise the first-cycle coulombic efficiency to 89.3%. Additionally, the dual-additive electrolyte delivers the most stable performance, retaining over 85% capacity after 600 cycles while minimizing impedance growth under long-term cycling at C/3 and 40 °C. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirms that VC + DTD effectively suppresses electrolyte oxidation at the cathode surface, and micro-X-ray fluorescence shows substantially reduced Mn dissolution and deposition on the graphite anode. Density functional theory simulations further provided insights into the structural and energetic influences of alkoxide species on the cathode surface, proposing a Mn2+ extraction mechanism. The combined experimental and computational findings establish a mechanistic link between electrolyte composition and interphase evolution, highlighting the effectiveness of electrolyte engineering for extending the operational lifetime of LMFP-based lithium-ion batteries.

Raman enhancement induced by exciton hybridization in molecules and 2D materials

Abstract Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful technique for trace-level fingerprinting. Recently, layered two-dimensional (2D) materials have gained significant interest as SERS substrates for providing stable, uniform, and reproducible Raman enhancement with the potential for trace-level detection. Yet, the development of effective 2D SERS substrates is still hindered by the lack of fundamental understanding of the coupling mechanism between target molecules and substrates. Here, we report a systematic excitation-dependent Raman spectroscopy investigation on the coupling between 2D materials such as SnS 2 , MoS 2 , WSe 2 , and graphene and small organic molecules like rhodamine 6G (Rh 6G). Strong coupling between SnS 2 and Rh 6G is found due to their degenerate excitons through Raman excitation profiles (REP), leading to the enhancement of Rh 6G vibrational modes that are observable down to 10 −13 M. Our study shows that exciton coupling in the substrate-adsorbate complex plays a vital role in the Raman enhancement effect, opening a new route for designing SERS substrates for high sensitivity.
