First in operando transient grating spectroscopy measurements on tungsten during high flux plasma operation in PISCES-RF

Abstract

This work details the construction and first in operando transient grating spectroscopy measurements conducted on PISCES-RF during plasma operation. A preliminary study on a tungsten sample with varied plasma species (Ar and D 2 ), ion flux (4 × 10 21 to 6 × 10 22 ion/m 2 /s), ion energy (5 to 80 eV), and surface temperature (20 to 200 °C) is presented. Prior to plasma exposure, the thermal diffusivity and surface acoustic wave (SAW) speed, (6.9 ± 0.2) × 10 −5 m 2 /s and (2.66 ± 0.02) km/s, were measured in situ with a thermal grating period of 12.5 μm. During Ar plasma exposure, these two quantities vary according to the sample surface temperature. At low flux and varied ion energy, D 2 plasma exposure also results in thermal diffusivity and SAW speed varying with surface temperature alone. At high flux, D 2 plasma exposure results in no convincing change to the thermal diffusivity, but the SAW speed is reduced. After returning to 20 °C, post plasma exposures, the thermal diffusivity and SAW speed almost recover to the initial value prior to exposure.

A simplified di-homodyne transient grating spectroscopy system utilizing polarization

Here, a modification to the di-homodyne transient grating spectroscopy optical arrangement is presented that removes the need to individually align two spatially separated probe laser beams. This work details the novel application of a single probe beam that utilizes birefringent materials to produce two optically homodyned signals with a relative phase shift of π radians. This arrangement effectively simplifies the alignment to one probe beam and removes the relative phase shift ambiguity between each homodyned signal. Several example measurements for tungsten, titanium, molybdenum, and silicon are shown to illustrate the utility of the new optical system.

Seeking & Evaluating Applications of SAWs (SEASAWs)

Surface Acoustic Wave sensors (SAWs) offer a battery less, wireless, passive, noninvasive, durable means of sensing which might be appealing to many fields in space technology. Developments in many aspects of SAWs including the miniaturization of associated hardware, improvements in interrogation and device fabrication / characterization allow for the use of SAWs in many aerospace settings where traditional sensors may have sufficed but SAWs might enhance. In order to place this technology in relevant environments, an inherent understanding of operation and capabilities must be understood. With the many possibilities of SAWs in their implementation, breaking down their tradeoffs and primary systems allows for their application.

Topographic effects on reflected acoustic waves from the OSIRIS-REx reentry observed from stratospheric balloons

During long-distance sound propagation in planetary atmospheres, acoustic waves may reflect off the air/surface interface one or more times. For low sound frequencies and flat interfaces, the incident and reflected wave tend to be nearly identical. However, this may not be the case when the downgoing acoustic wave encounters topography. Here, we describe a set of direct and reflected acoustic signals recorded on free-flying balloons during the hypersonic entry of the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule (SRC). In two of the three cases presented here, an impulsive reflected arrival similar in form to the direct sonic boom of the SRC is observed, followed by a diffuse coda. In contrast, one of the floating stations lacked an impulsive reflection entirely, with only the coda present. We use full waveform modeling to show how reflection in the presence of complex topography can explain coda seen in all three examples as well as the lack of impulsive arrival on the third. Our results indicate that the complex signals often observed in long range acoustic propagation could be due, in part, to interactions with topography during transmission.
