Abstract

A search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a W or Z boson and decaying via a soft unclustered energy pattern (SUEP) is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 collected between 2016 and 2018 at the LHC. Final states with a leptonic W or Z boson decay associated with a high multiplicity of low-momentum charged particles are explored for the first time. The results show no significant excess over the standard model background expectation. Limits are set on the production cross section of a Higgs boson that decays to a SUEP, for a range of parameters of the SUEP model. Material is provided to facilitate further interpretation of the results.

Assessment of Near-Angle Scatter on Exo-Earth Coronagraphy

Near-Angle Scatter (NAS) of the host star’s light into the coronagraph dark hole may limit the ability of a potential Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) to detect and characterize an Earth-like planet around a Sun-like star. This paper summarizes a 5-year investigation of the impact of NAS on high-contrast coronagraphy. Science requirements were flowed down to a draft flux ratio noise ratio (FRN) error budget with allocations for NAS. The modeled sources of NAS include correlated (low and mid-spatial) surface structure, uncorrelated surface microroughness and coating structure, particulate contamination, micrometeoroid impacts and polarization leakage. The paper develops specifications for these sources of scattered light that meet their FRN error budget allocations, distinguishing between scatter that can and cannot be modulated. The development process utilizes an analytical expression that predicts scatter throughput into the dark hole based on BRDF/BSDF. Using this relationship, Photon Engineering performed a FRED® straylight analysis of the HWO EAC-1 (Exploratory Analytical Case #1) coronagraph to parametrically study predicted scattered light contrast in the dark hole. The model revealed that primary mirror microroughness or contamination is not a significant source of scattered light; the most critical surfaces are the smallest and those located closest to the coronagraph focal plane mask. The assessment found that uncorrelated microstructure, contamination, and micrometeoroid impacts require more investigation and potential significant sources of unmodulated scattered light, and highlights that slow thermal wavefront drift is an order of magnitude more impactful than fast mechanical jitter.

Assembly and Testing of Scintillator Tile Modules for the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter Upgrade

The High-Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), part of the upgrade to the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, employs silicon and scintillator tile modules in the endcaps to maintain detector performance during the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) era, scheduled to operate from 2030 to 2040. The upgraded calorimeter will provide highly segmented three-dimensional imaging, energy measurements, and precise timing for particle shower reconstruction. Approximately half of the HGCal plastic scintillator tile modules (1,834 total) will be assembled at Fermilab using an automated pick-and-place (PnP) machine. Following assembly, each tile module undergoes quality control (QC) procedures such as electrical validation, thermal testing, and physics validation using cosmic rays. This poster/talk presents the QC procedures and results from the tile module production in 2026, demonstrating the performance and quality of the assembled tile modules.

Getting Warmer: IceCube Nears Freeze Out

IceCube has recently detected a diffuse population of high-energy neutrinos arising from the Milky Way. We use this high-significance detection to place new limits on dark matter (DM) annihilation to neutrinos with two complementary approaches. The first method uses the background-subtracted Galactic longitude distribution of shower events to place a conservative bound on the DM annihilation cross section that does not rely on any assumed Galactic cosmic ray emission model; the resulting limits on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross section improve upon existing bounds by factors of a few. The second method uses the template-dependent neutrino energy spectra from the Inner Galaxy, inferred under different Galactic cosmic ray emission models. This complementary approach shows that the inferred Galactic neutrino intensities are already sensitive to DM contributions near the thermal-relic benchmark for a range of TeV-scale DM masses, though this comparison is more model-dependent. Our results demonstrate that measurements of diffuse Galactic neutrino emission can be used as a powerful probe of DM annihilation into neutrinos. Future observations with IceCube-Gen2 and KM3NeT will substantially extend this sensitivity, potentially allowing a decisive test of the thermal freeze-out mechanism with Galactic neutrino observations.
