Silver Adsorption on Calcium Niobate(001) Nanosheets: Calorimetric Energies That Explain Sinter-Resistant Support

Metal nanoparticles deposited on oxide supports are essential to many technologies, including catalysts, fuel cells and electronics. Therefore, understanding the chemical bonding strength between metal nanoparticles and oxide surfaces is of great interest. The adsorption energetics, adhesion energy and adsorbate structure of Ag on dehydrated HCa 2 Nb 3 O 10 (001) nanosheets at 300 K have been studied using metal adsorption calorimetry and surface spectroscopies. These dehydrated (“dh”) calcium niobate nanosheets “(dh-HCa 2 Nb 3 O 10 (001))” have stoichiometry Ca 4 Nb 6 O 19 . They impart unusual stability to metal nanoparticles when used as catalyst supports and are easy-to-prepare by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques, highly ordered, and essentially single-crystal surfaces of mixed oxides with a huge ratio of terrace to edge sites. Below monolayer coverage, Ag grows on dh-HCa 2 Nb 3 O 10 (001) as 2D islands of thickness ~2 layers. The differential heat of Ag adsorption is initially ~303 kJ/mol, increasing slowly to ~338 kJ/mol by 0.8 ML. At higher coverages, Ag atoms mainly add on top of these 2D islands, growing 3D nanoparticles of increasing thickness, as the heat decreases asymptotically towards silver’s heat of sublimation (285 kJ/mol). The adhesion energy of Ag(s) to this Ca niobate surface is estimated to be 4.33 J/m 2 , larger than on any oxide surface previously measured. This explains the sinter resistance reported for metal nanoparticles on this support. Electron transfer from Ag into the calcium niobate is also measured. Furthermore, these results demonstrate an easy way to do singlecrystal-type surface science studies - and especially thermochemical measurements - on the complex surfaces of mixed oxides: using LB-deposited perovskite nanosheets and ultrahigh vacuum annealing in O 2 .

Detecting Phase-Resolved Magnetization Dynamics by Magneto-Optic Effects at 1550 nm Wavelength

We demonstrate the detection of phase-resolved magnetization dynamics with combinatorial magneto-optic Kerr and Faraday effects. The method uses a continuous-wave laser that is amplitude-modulated at the spin dynamic frequencies, and thus allows for coherent tracking of the spin dynamics, akin a “lock-in” type measurement. In particular, our method, using a single 1550-nmwavelength, probes simultaneously the ferromagnetic resonance of Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) and Permalloy (Py = Ni 80 Fe 20 ) in a YIG-Pyhetero structure. The fiber-based magneto-optic components also have the advantage of being made into a compact, tabletop or even portable system with yet robust measurement performances. We believe that our method will be found useful in studying hybrid quantum magnonic systems and/or investigating phase-resolved spin dynamics in nanomagnet structures involving both ferromagnetic insulators and metals.

Probing magnon–magnon coupling in exchange coupled Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 /Permalloy bilayers with magneto-optical effects

We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG)/Permalloy (Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude and phase evolution caused by the magnon–magnon coupling. Our work offers a new route towards studying phase-resolved spin dynamics and hybrid magnonic systems

Holey Lamellar High-Entropy Oxide as an Ultra-High-Activity Heterogeneous Catalyst for Solvent-free Aerobic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

The development of noble-metal-free heterogeneous catalysts is promising for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols; however, the relatively low conversion of non-noble metal catalysts under solvent-free atmospheric conditions hinders their industrial application. Now, a holey lamellar high entropy oxide (HEO) Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Mg 0.2 Zn 0.2 O material with mesoporous structure is prepared by an anchoring and merging process. The HEO has ultra-high catalytic activity for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Furthermore, up to 98% conversion can be achieved in only 2 h, to our knowledge, the highest conversion of benzyl alcohol by oxidation to date. By regulating the catalytic reaction parameters, benzoic acid or benzaldehyde can be selectively optimized as the main product. Analytical characterizations and calculations provide a deeper insight into the catalysis mechanism, revealing abundant oxygen vacancies and holey lamellar framework contribute to the ultra-high catalytic activity.

Molecular subtyping reveals immune alterations in IDH wild‐type lower‐grade diffuse glioma

Abstract Isocitrate dehydrogenase ( IDH ) wild‐type diffuse lower‐grade glioma (LGG) is usually associated with poor outcome, but there have been disputes over its clinical outcome and classification. We present here a robust gene expression‐based molecular classification of IDH wild‐type diffuse LGG into two subtypes with distinct biological and clinical features. A discovery cohort of 49 IDH wild‐type diffuse LGGs from the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) was subjected to clustering and function analysis. Seventy‐three tumors from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were used to validate our findings. Consensus clustering of transcriptional data uncovered concordant classification of two robust and prognostically significant subtypes of IDH wild‐type LGG. Subtype 1, associated with poorer outcomes, was characterized by significantly higher immune and cytolytic scores, M2 macrophages, and up‐regulation of immune exhaustion markers, while Subtype 2, which had elevated lymphocytes and plasma cells, showed relatively favorable survival. Somatic alteration analysis revealed that Subtype 1 showed more frequently deleted regions, such as the locus of CDKN2A / CDKN2B , DMRTA1 , C9orf53 , and MTAP . Furthermore, we developed and validated a five‐gene signature for better application of this acquired stratification. Our data demonstrate the biological and prognostic heterogeneity within IDH wild‐type diffuse LGGs and deepen our molecular understandi‐g of this tumor entity. © 2020 Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Realizing Complete Solid-Solution Reaction in High Sodium Content P2-Type Cathode for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

P2-type layered oxides suffer from an ordered Na + /vacancy arrangement and P2→O2/OP4 phase transitions, leading them to exhibit multiple voltage plateaus upon Na + extraction/insertion. The deficient sodium in the P2-type cathode easily induces the bad structural stability at deep desodiation states and limited reversible capacity during Na + de/insertion. These drawbacks cause poor rate capability and fast capacity decay in most P2-type layered oxides. In this work, to address these challenges, a novel high sodium content (0.85) and plateau-free P2-type cathode-Na 0.85 Li 0.12 Ni 0.22 Mn 0.66 O 2 (P2-NLNMO) was developed. The complete solid-solution reaction over a wide voltage range ensures both fast Na + mobility (10 -11 to 10 -10 cm 2 s -1 ) and small volume variation (1.7%). Furthermore, the high sodium content P2-NLNMO exhibits a higher reversible capacity of 123.4 mAhg -1 , superior rate capability of 79.3 mAhg -1 at 20 C, and 85.4% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 5 C. The sufficient Na and complete solid-solution reaction are critical to realizing high-performance P2-type cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.

Hydrazone-Linked Heptazine Polymeric Carbon Nitrides for Synergistic Visible-Light-Driven Catalysis

Heptazine-based conjugated polymeric carbon nitrides (PCNs) are promising metal-free photocatalysts, yet their synthesis is challenging due to the electron-deficiency and insolubility of heptazine units. Indeed, heptazine-containing polymers have only been prepared through nucleophilic substitution with amines by using toxic cyameluric chloride as the starting material. Herein, we report the novel and environmentally friendly method for preparing heptazine-based mesoporous PCNs with hydrazone links formed through a simple Schiff base condensation of melem-NH 2 and aldehydes. Unlike cyameluric chloride, melem-NH 2 is non-toxic, stable, and can be readily obtained from melem and hydrazine in solution. We demonstrate that the hydrazone linkages and the heptazine units synergistically enhance the photocatalytic activity of PCNs in visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. In particular, the polymer constructed from melem-NH2 and p-phthalaldehyde shows 17 times more activity than graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ).

Phonon Transport Controlled by Ferromagnetic Resonance

The resonant coupling of phonons and magnons is important for the interconversion of phononic and spin degrees of freedom. We study the phonon transmission in LiNbO 3 manipulated by the dynamic magnetization in a Ni thin film. It is observed that the phonons can be absorbed strongly through resonant magnon-phonon coupling, which is realized by our modifying the magnon-phonon coupling within the Ni itself as well as our optimizing the interfacial coupling between Ni and LiNbO 3 . The line shapes of phonon transmission are further investigated considering the magnon-phonon interconversion in the elastically driven ferromagnetic resonance process. The results promote unique routes for phonon manipulation and detection in the presence of magnetization dynamics.

Steam‐Induced Coarsening of Single‐Unit‐Cell MFI Zeolite Nanosheets and Its Effect on External Surface Brønsted Acid Catalysis

Abstract Commonly used methods to assess crystallinity, micro‐/mesoporosity, Brønsted acid site density and distribution (in micro‐ vs. mesopores), and catalytic activity suggest nearly invariant structure and function for aluminosilicate zeolite MFI two‐dimensional nanosheets before and after superheated steam treatment. Yet, pronounced reaction rate decrease for benzyl alcohol alkylation with mesitylene, a reaction that cannot take place in the zeolite micropores, is observed. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal pronounced changes in nanosheet thickness, aspect ratio and roughness indicating that nanosheet coarsening and the associated changes in the external (mesoporous) surface structure are responsible for the changes in the external surface catalytic activity. Superheated steam treatment of hierarchical zeolites can be used to alter nanosheet morphology and regulate external surface catalytic activity while preserving micro‐ and mesoporosity, and micropore reaction rates.

Coordination of thermostatically controlled loads

Apparatus and methods for a market-based control framework to coordinate a group of autonomous thermostatically controlled loads (TCL) to achieve system-level objectives with pricing incentives is disclosed. In one example of the disclosed technology, a method of providing power to a load via a power grid by submitting bids to a coordinator includes determining an energy response relating price data for one or more energy prices to quantity data for power to be consumed by the load, sending a bid for power for a finite time period based on the energy response to the coordinator, and receiving a clearing price based on: the bid, on bids received from a plurality of additional loads, and a feeder power constraint. In some examples, the energy response is based at least in part on an equivalent thermal parameter model and a control policy indicating one or more power states for the load.

Shock initiation and hot spots in plastic-bonded 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB)

TATB (1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene) is a powerful explosive whose dynamical behavior is difficult to study because TATB is so insensitive to initiation by shock waves. We used a tabletop microscope equipped with 0–4.5 km/s laser-launched flyer plates to study shock initiation of TATB, which was fabricated in the form of an array of hundreds of plastic-bonded explosive minicharges (X-TATB = 80% TATB + 20% Sylgard 182 polymer). The 4 ns shocks from the flyer plates were not effective in initiating TATB, but we also developed a two-layer array where flyers first initiated a plastic-bonded PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate) charge (X-PETN = 80% PETN + 20% Sylgard), which drove an initiating 25 ns shock into the X-TATB. Thermal emission from shocked X-TATB was used to measure time-dependent temperature profiles with a resolution of 2 ns and to produce high-speed (5 ns) videos. In X-TATB, flyer plates produced 2500–3500 K hot spots and combustion at 2500 K. With X-PETN initiators, X-TATB had 3500–4000 K hot spots and a powerful volume explosion lasting a few nanoseconds. Prospects for producing TATB detonations on a tabletop are discussed.

Coherent Spin Pumping in a Strongly Coupled Magnon-Magnon Hybrid System

Here, we experimentally identify coherent spin pumping in the magnon-magnon hybrid modes of yttrium iron garnet/permalloy (YIG/Py) bilayers. By reducing the YIG and Py thicknesses, the strong interfacial exchange coupling leads to large avoided crossings between the uniform mode of Py and the spin wave modes of YIG enabling accurate determination of modification of the linewidths due to the dampinglike torque. We identify additional linewidth suppression and enhancement for the in-phase and out-of-phase hybrid modes, respectively, which can be interpreted as concerted dampinglike torque from spin pumping. Furthermore, varying the Py thickness shows that both the fieldlike and dampinglike couplings vary like 1/$\sqrt{𝑡_{Py}}$, verifying the prediction by the coupled Landau-Lifshitz equations.

Selective Ligand Modification of Cobalt Porphyrins for Carbon Dioxide Electrolysis: Generation of a Renewable H2/CO Feedstock for Downstream Catalytic Hydrogenation

Catalytic hydrogenation is an attractive approach to produce green fuels and chemicals. The building blocks for these processes may be effectively produced from renewable power via direct electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide in an aqueous media. For the first time, the impact of increasing the local proton concentration of cobalt porphyrin was examined by synthesizing new cobalt porphyrins 2, Co(o-OCH3)TPP and cobalt porphyrin 3, Co(o-OH)TPP. Cobalt porphyrins coated on carbon paper converted carbon dioxide and water into a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in an aqueous electrolyte at near neutral pH. Increasing the local proton availability of the commercial cobalt porphyrin 1, accelerates hydrogen generation under heterogeneous conditions across the range of potentials tested (-0.85 to -1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and demonstrates high Faradaic efficiencies (ca. 90%) at low over-potentials (ca. 540 mV). The culmination of this work can help identify key parameters that facilitate generation of sustainable reagents for catalytic hydrogenation under practical and scalable conditions.
