Experimental parameters, combined dynamics, and nonlinearity of a magnonic-opto-electronic oscillator (MOEO)

We report the construction and characterization of a comprehensive magnonic-opto-electronic oscillator (MOEO) system based on 1550-nm photonics and yttrium iron garnet (YIG) magnonics. The system exhibits a rich and synergistic parameter space because of the ability to control individual photonic, electronic, and magnonic components. Taking advantage of the spin wave dispersion of YIG, the frequency self-generation as well as the related nonlinear processes becomes sensitive to the external magnetic field. Besides being known as a band-pass filter and a delay element, the YIG delay line possesses spin wave modes that can be controlled to mix with the optoelectronic modes to generate higher-order harmonic beating modes. With the high sensitivity and external tunability, the MOEO system may find usefulness in sensing applications in magnetism and spintronics beyond optoelectronics and photonics.

Highly C2/C1-Selective Covalent Organic Frameworks Substituted with Azo Groups

A series of covalent organic frameworks substituted with azo groups (AzoCOFs) have been synthesized via imine condensation. The obtained frameworks show crystallinity and high stability. More importantly, the AzoCOFs exhibit exceptionally high ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST) selectivity in adsorption of C 2 H 2 (35–2891) over CH 4 at 273 K and 1 bar, owing to the favorable interactions between azo groups and acetylene molecules. The dependence of the gas adsorption property on pore size and polarity of the frameworks was also studied. Here, the triethylene glycol substituted Tg-AzoCOF shows the highest C 2 H 2 /CH 4 selectivity (IAST selectivity of 2891), which represents the highest reported for all porous materials. The AzoCOFs also exhibit high IAST adsorption selectivity of C 2 H 4 /CH 4 (11–20), C 2 H 6 /CH 4 (15–22), and CO 2 /CH 4 (12–37), which is comparable with most porous materials, thus showing their great potential in gas separation applications.

Rate Enhancement of Acid-Catalyzed Alcohol Dehydration by Supramolecular Organic Capsules

The presence of a (sub)nanometric environment has been demonstrated to enhance the rate of homogeneous acid-catalyzed reactions. Conventionally, such catalysts are constructed by directly embedding a catalytically active acid site into the structure of a porous material, linking the acid properties with the properties of the embedding solid. Here, a holoenzyme mimicking approach was used, in which a self-assembled hexameric resorcinarene capsule (1.4 nm 3 cavity) acts like an apoenzyme that transforms into a catalytically active site by hosting hydrated HCl as a cofactor. This capsule binds the hydronium ion together with cyclohexanol (CyOH) and catalyzes the dehydration to cyclohexene with enhanced rates that are 2 orders of magnitude higher than those in the unconstrained environment. Kinetic analysis shows that cyclohexanol dehydration proceeds via an E2 mechanism on hydrated HCl in the unconstrained environment, while the constrained environment of the active capsule induces the stabilization of an ionic intermediate, allowing an E1 mechanism to dominate. By comparison with the reaction in zeolite environments, we show that the direct chemical environment of the capsule or a zeolite wall exerts only a minor direct influence. The volume constraint increases the reaction rate by inducing a larger activation entropy, indicating the stabilization of a later transition state in the E1 mechanism, as well as a higher reaction space of the carbenium ion constituting the transition state.

A Low-Power Time-to-Digital Converter for the CMS Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) Upgrade

We present the design and test results of a Time-to-Digital-Converter (TDC). The TDC will be a part of the readout ASIC, called ETROC, to read out Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs) for the CMS Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) of High-Luminosity LHC upgrade. One of the challenges of the ETROC design is that the TDC is required to consume less than 200 W for each pixel at the nominal hit occupancy of 1%. To meet the low-power requirement, we use a single delay line for both the Time of Arrival (TOA) and the Time over Threshold (TOT) measurements without delay control. A double-strobe self-calibration scheme is used to compensate for process variation, temperature, and power supply voltage. The TDC is fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS technology. The overall performances of the TDC have been evaluated. The TOA has a bin size of 17.8 ps within its effective dynamic range of 11.6 ns. The effective measurement precision of the TOA is 5.6 ps and 9.9 ps with and without the nonlinearity correction, respectively. The TDC block consumes 97 W at the hit occupancy of 1%. Over a temperature range from 23 C to 78 C and a power supply voltage range from 1.05 V to 1.35 V (the nominal value of 1.20 V), the self-calibrated bin size of the TOA varies within 0.4%. The measured TDC performances meet the requirements except that more tests will be performed in the future to verify that the TDC complies with the radiation-tolerance specifications.

A 20 Gbps Data Transmitting ASIC with PAM4 for Particle Physics Experiments

We present the design principle and test results of a data transmitting ASIC, GBS20, for particle physics experiments. The goal of GBS20 will be an ASIC that employs two serializers each from the 10.24 Gbps lpGBT SerDes, sharing the PLL also from lpGBT. A PAM4 encoder plus a VCSEL driver will be implemented in the same die to use the same clock system, eliminating the need of CDRs in the PAM4 encoder. This way the transmitter module, GBT20, developed using the GBS20 ASIC, will have the exact lpGBT data interface and transmission protocol, with an output up to 20.48 Gbps over one fiber. With PAM4 embedded FPGAs at the receiving end, GBT20 will halve the fibers needed in a system and better use the input bandwidth of the FPGA. A prototype, GBS20v0 is fabricated using a commercial 65 nm CMOS technology. This prototype has two serializers and a PAM4 encoder sharing the lpGBT PLL, but no user data input. An internal PRBS generator provides data to the serializers. GBS20v0 is tested barely up to 20.48 Gbps. With lessons learned from this prototype, we are designing the second prototype, GBS20v1, that will have 16 user data input channels each at 1.28 Gbps. We present the design concept of the GBS20 ASIC and the GBT20 module, the preliminary test results, and lessons learned from GBS20v0 and the design of GBS20v1 which will be not only a test chip but also a user chip with 16 input data channels.

Calorimetric metal vapor adsorption energies for characterizing industrial catalyst support materials

Many important catalysts and electro-catalysts for energy and environmental technologies involve late transition metal atoms and nanoparticles dispersed across the surface of high-surface-area support materials, for example, oxide nanoparticles. The surface reactivity and long-term stability against deactivation of these materials depends strongly on the strength of bonding of the metal atom and nanoparticles to the support surface. Here, we introduce a novel calorimetry method that implements a LiTaO 3 crystal for heat detection and extends metal adsorption calorimetry to surfaces of nanomaterials that are deposited from liquid solutions, as is typical when preparing industrial catalyst supports. This allows one to measure the strength of metal atom bonding and the adhesion energy of metal nanoparticles to clean surfaces of technologically relevant catalyst supports. We demonstrate that here by measuring the heat of Ag vapor adsorption onto the clean surfaces of high-surface-area TiO 2 anatase powdered support materials (i.e., 5-nm-diameter nanoparticles). These heats of adsorption show a pulse-to-pulse standard deviation of only 9.3 kJ/mol (3.3%) for pulses containing only 1% of a monolayer of Ag vapor, with potential for a 5-fold reduction in noise if used with another metal evaporator. The calorimeter was also proven to work well measuring heats of Ag adsorption on calcium niobate(001) nanosheets deposited as thin films from liquid solution. Here, this calorimeter opens up the possibility of using metal adsorption calorimetry to screen catalyst support materials for the strengths with which they bind metal atoms and metal nanoparticles, offering new opportunities to discover better support materials or for basic scientific study of structure / function relationships with respect to metal / support bond energies.

Hybrid magnonics: Physics, circuits, and applications for coherent information processing

Hybrid dynamic systems have recently gained interest with respect to both fundamental physics and device applications, particularly with their potential for coherent information processing. In this work, we will focus on the recent rapid developments of magnon-based hybrid systems, which seek to combine magnonic excitations with diverse excitations for transformative applications in devices, circuits, and information processing. Key to their promising potentials is that magnons are highly tunable excitations and can be easily engineered to couple with various dynamic media and platforms. The capability of reaching strong coupling with many different excitations has positioned magnons well for studying solid-state coherent dynamics and exploiting unique functionality. In addition, with their gigahertz frequency bandwidth and the ease of fabrication and miniaturization, magnonic devices and systems can be conveniently integrated into microwave circuits for mimicking a broad range of device concepts that have been applied in microwave electronics, photonics, and quantum information. We will discuss a few potential directions for advancing magnon hybrid systems, including on-chip geometry, novel coherent magnonic functionality, and coherent transduction between different platforms. As a future outlook, we will discuss the opportunities and challenges of magnonic hybrid systems for their applications in quantum information and magnonic logic.

Blue phosphorene reactivity on the Au(111) surface

Abstract The synthesis of blue phosphorene by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has recently come under the spotlight due to its potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, this synthesis remains a significant challenge. The surface reactivity between the P atoms and the Au atoms should be considered for the P/Au(111) system. In the MBE process, the temperature of the substrate is a key parameter for the growth of blue phosphorene. During the initial growth stage, irregularly shaped Phosphorus clusters grow on top of Au(111) surface at room temperature. When the substrate temperature is increased, these clusters transform into a phosphorene-like structure with a honeycomb lattice. An atom exchange reaction is observed between the P and first layer Au atoms under thermal activation at higher temperature, where the P atoms replace Au atoms to form a blue phosphorene structure within the top Au layer and at the step edges.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Intercritically Treated Grade 91 Steel

Premature creep failures at the intercritical heat affected zone (ICHAZ) of creep-resistant steel weldments have been frequently reported. However, the creep degradation mechanism of different microstructure constituents in ICHAZ is complicated and needs further clarification. In this work, Grade 91 steel was intercritically heat-treated at a temperature (860 °C) between the critical temperatures AC1 and AC3, and a correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties of the heat-treated specimen was built. The effects of austenitization and tempering resulting from the intercritical treatment (IT) differentiated the local strain energies between the two microstructure constituents: newly transformed martensite (NTM) and over-tempered martensite (OTM). The formation of NTM grains led to a hardness increase from 247 HV0.5 in the base metal to 332 HV0.5 in the IT specimen. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased from 739 MPa in the base metal to 1054 MPa in the IT specimen. Extensive growth of the OTM grains and rapid recovery of NTM grains took place simultaneously in the IT specimen during a typical tempering at 760 °C. These microstructure degradations led to a lowered hardness of 178 HV0.5, a reduced UTS of 596 MPa, and a poor creep resistance with a minimum creep strain rate of 0.49 %/h at 650 °C in an IT + tempering (ITT) specimen.

Triaxial Constraint and Tensile Strength Enhancement in Brazed Joints

A brazed joint consists of a low-melting point and thin interlayer sandwiched between the high-melting-point base materials, in which the interlayer strength is typically lower than that of the base material. When this butt-joined composite is loaded uniaxially in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the brazing layer, the tensile strength is found to be much higher than that of the braze. This seems to violate the iso-stress condition in such a butt-joint serial configuration. Furthermore, the stress triaxiality has been usually ascribed, but without a quantitative rationalization, as being responsible for this tensile strength enhancement. Here a complete finite element simulation has been conducted to study the dependence of triaxiality and strength enhancement on geometric and material parameters. Two asymptotic limit solutions (based on Bridgman and Xia–Shih solutions, respectively) have been identified to understand the simulation results. The critical role of void evolution has been revealed when making a quantitative comparison to available experiments. In addition, ductility of the brazed joint, which has not been fully addressed in literature, is investigated by the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman model.

Insulation for conductors

An insulative assembly includes an insulative mica-based carrier film and first and second resistive grading layers joined to opposite sides of the mica-based carrier film. The first resistive material layer is configured to engage one or more conductors and insulate the one or more conductors from at least one other conductor. A method for creating an insulative assembly for one or more conductors includes obtaining an insulative mica-based carrier film, depositing a first resistive grading layer on a first side of the mica-based carrier film, and depositing a second resistive grading layer on an opposite, second first side of the mica-based carrier film.

Transactive Energy Systems: The Market-based Coordination of Distributed Energy Resources

This paper synthesizes a unifying framework that captures a large class of transactive energy systems studied in the literature. The framework consists of four key elements: agent preferences, control decisions, information structure, and solution concept. Among them, agent preference specifies the preferred outcome by each agent and models the conflict of interest in decision making. Control decision specifies the set of decisions for each agent to maximize its payoff. Information structure describes the information available to each agent before it makes a decision. Solution concept encodes the rationality assumptions of each agent in the system. These elements are important in identifying and distinguishing different transactive energy systems. In this paper, we use them to analyze a number of important ones, including the competitive equilibrium, Stackelberg game, reverse Stackelberg game, and mechanism design. Each class of these problems is formulated as a special case of the proposed transactive energy systems. Their connections and differences are discussed. Available tools and results for each category of problems are surveyed.
