Thermally Driven Catch-and-Release of CoCl 2

A heat-driven catch-and-release strategy for CoCl 2 capture is described. It is based on the use of an immobilized neutral dicyclohexylacetamide-based receptor L supported on polystyrene (PS-L). An X-ray diffraction analysis of a single crystal of L·CoCl 2 revealed an ion-pair complex comprising a hexacoordinated cobalt cation [L·Co] 2+ and a tetrachlorocobaltate anion [CoCl 4 ] 2– . Temperature dependent binding was seen, as inferred from UV–vis spectroscopic studies. Fits to the van’t Hoff equation yielded values of ΔH° = 12.4 kJ/mol and ΔS° = 56.0 J/K·mol for L + CoCl2, and ΔH° = 16.5 kJ/mol and ΔS° = 85.0 J/K·mol for PS-L + CoCl 2 in 95% ethanol. Consequently, cobalt capture and release are mediated by heating and cooling, respectively. The material PS-L exhibits a preference for binding cobalt over manganese and nickel as inferred from Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm analyses that revealed binding constants of KLF = 88.5 M –1 for CoCl 2 , 52.7 M –1 for MnCl 2 , and 49.7 M –1 for NiCl 2 . In a simulated ion mixture containing equimolar CoCl 2 , MnCl 2 , and NiCl 2 , ICP-MS analyses served to confirm that cobalt was selectively enriched to 52 mol % (from an initial level of ca. 32 mol %) after one catch-and-release cycle and 76.6% after three cycles. Our experimental results were validated by density functional theory calculations, which also show stronger binding of Co over Mn and Ni to L.

Sequential removal of cation/H + exchangers reveals their additive role in elemental distribution, calcium depletion and anoxia tolerance

Multiple Arabidopsis H + /Cation exchangers (CAXs) participate in high-capacity transport into the vacuole. Previous studies have analysed single and double mutants that marginally reduced transport; however, assessing phenotypes caused by transport loss has proven enigmatic. Here, in this study, we generated quadruple mutants (cax1-4: qKO) that exhibited growth inhibition, an 85% reduction in tonoplast-localised H + /Ca transport, and enhanced tolerance to anoxic conditions compared to CAX1 mutants. Leveraging inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF), we demonstrate CAX transporters work together to regulate leaf elemental content: ICP-MS analysis showed that the elemental concentrations in leaves strongly correlated with the number of CAX mutations; SXRF imaging showed changes in element partitioning not present in single CAX mutants and qKO had a 40% reduction in calcium (Ca) abundance. Reduced endogenous Ca may promote anoxia tolerance; wild-type plants grown in Ca-limited conditions were anoxia tolerant. Sequential reduction of CAXs increased mRNA expression and protein abundance changes associated with reactive oxygen species and stress signalling pathways. Multiple CAXs participate in postanoxia recovery as their concerted removal heightened changes in postanoxia Ca signalling. This work showcases the integrated and diverse function of H + /Cation transporters and demonstrates the ability to improve anoxia tolerance through diminishing endogenous Ca levels.

Particle size effect of graphite anodes on performance of fast charging Li-ion batteries

Charging energy-dense lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with thick graphite electrodes at high current densities are typically accompanied by poor performance and safety issues. The root cause is the onset of Li plating at the surface of graphite when lithiated to a high capacity within a short time period. Here, we investigated the behavior of graphite electrodes with various particle sizes under fast charge operations. Results from the electrochemical characterization on graphite electrodes exhibit the superiority of smaller particles over bigger particles in terms of suppressing the onset of Li plating and growth of plated Li particles. Observations from scanning electron microscopy also corroborate the presence of plated Li in electrodes with big graphite particles and its absence in graphite electrodes with small particles, when the cells were lithiated to 90% of the state of charge (SOC). Further, the improved performance of cells with the small particles might be associated with the low Li-ion concentration at the surface of graphite and thus reduced overpotential in graphite electrodes. The simulated results revealed that, compared to bigger particles, smaller particles have lower surface intercalation at any given cell SOC, which may significantly reduce the overpotential in the graphite electrodes and mitigate the onset of Li plating. This agrees well with experimental observations.

Deferasirox Derivatives: Ligands for the Lanthanide Series

Deferasirox is an FDA-approved iron chelator used in the treatment of iron toxicity. In this work, we report the use of several deferasirox derivatives as lanthanide chelators. Solid-state structural studies of three representative trivalent lanthanide cations, La(III), Eu(III), and Lu(III), revealed the formation of 2:2 complexes in the solid state. A 1:1 stoichiometry dominates in DMSO solution, with K a values of 472 ± 14, 477 ± 11, and 496 ± 15 M –1 being obtained in the case of these three cations, respectively. Under the conditions of competitive precipitation in the presence of triethylamine, high selectivity (up to 80%) for lutetium(III) was observed in competition with La(III), Ce(III), and Eu(III). In conclusion, theoretical calculations provided support for the observed selective crystallization.

Compositional changes of dissolved organic molecules along water flow and their influencing factors in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its influencing factors in river reservoirs remains elusive. Here, molecular compositions of DOM, bacterial community structures, and water physiochemistry were investigated in the field and microcosm samples of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). The results showed that DOM molecular compositions were significantly (R 2 = 0.245, p < 0.001) correlated with bacterial community structures in the studied field samples, suggesting that bacteria may actively interact with DOM molecules. In this study, the molecular compositions of DOM in the studied field samples were significantly (p < 0.05) affected by the distance between the sample sites and the Three Gorges Dam and by bacterial groups of Actinobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria, suggesting that both hydrological and bacterial processes may contribute to the variation in DOM molecular composition in the TGR water. Furthermore, microcosm experiments demonstrated that both microbial and abiotic processes may transform and/or produce DOM in the TGR, thereby affecting DOM molecular composition. Microbial process increased the average aromaticity index and decreased the carbon number of DOM molecules with increasing incubation duration; whereas average oxygen number, double bond equivalent, and oxidation state of carbon of DOM molecules increased during the first 14 days of incubation and began to decrease thereafter. Taken together, this study expands our understanding of the impact of microbial process on the DOM molecular composition in reservoir ecosystems, and has great implications for carbon cycling in major rivers.

BigNeuron: a resource to benchmark and predict performance of algorithms for automated tracing of neurons in light microscopy datasets

BigNeuron is an open community bench-testing platform with the goal of setting open standards for accurate and fast automatic neuron tracing. We gathered a diverse set of image volumes across several species that is representative of the data obtained in many neuroscience laboratories interested in neuron tracing. Here, we report generated gold standard manual annotations for a subset of the available imaging datasets and quantified tracing quality for 35 automatic tracing algorithms. The goal of generating such a hand-curated diverse dataset is to advance the development of tracing algorithms and enable generalizable benchmarking. Together with image quality features, we pooled the data in an interactive web application that enables users and developers to perform principal component analysis, t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding, correlation and clustering, visualization of imaging and tracing data, and benchmarking of automatic tracing algorithms in user-defined data subsets. The image quality metrics explain most of the variance in the data, followed by neuromorphological features related to neuron size. Furthermore, we observed that diverse algorithms can provide complementary information to obtain accurate results and developed a method to iteratively combine methods and generate consensus reconstructions. The consensus trees obtained provide estimates of the neuron structure ground truth that typically outperform single algorithms in noisy datasets. However, specific algorithms may outperform the consensus tree strategy in specific imaging conditions. Finally, to aid users in predicting the most accurate automatic tracing results without manual annotations for comparison, we used support vector machine regression to predict reconstruction quality given an image volume and a set of automatic tracings.

Analytical and Numerical Analysis of Lithium Plating Onset in Single and Bilayer Graphite Electrodes during Fast Charging

Lithium plating is commonly observed in anodes charged at fast rates, and can lead to capacity loss and battery safety issues. The increased risk of plating has been attributed to transport limitations, and architectured electrodes may reduce plating risk. However, while theoretical studies have shown that reaction non-uniformity arises due to interplay of transport limitations, anode open circuit voltage behavior and reaction kinetics, its effect on lithium plating has not been studied. We use analytic and numerical simulations to predict onset of plating in graphite anode half-cells at high C-rates and demonstrate how anodes with layered porosities can delay plating. Simplified analytical models identify trends for plating onset and predictions are calibrated against numerical models. A calibrated numerical model of graphite demonstrates qualitative agreement with analytical model predictions. This reaction inhomogeneity mechanism occurs in the absence of lithium ion depletion, indicating that these mechanisms may contribute to capacity loss independently or simultaneously. A bilayer model of graphite exhibits delayed plating onset, and an optimization procedure is presented. This theoretical work presents quantitative and mechanistic insight on how reaction inhomogenity affects lithium metal plating onset and can be used as a guide to engineer anodes resistant to lithium plating.

Thermoelectric Skutterudite Compositions and Methods for Producing the Same

Compositions related to skutterudite-based thermoelectric materials are disclosed. Such compositions can result in materials that have enhanced ZT values relative to one or more bulk materials from which the compositions are derived. Thermoelectric materials such as n-type and p-type skutterudites with high thermoelectric figures-of-merit can include materials with filler atoms and/or materials formed by compacting particles (e.g., nanoparticles) into a material with a plurality of grains each having a portion having a skutterudite-based structure. Methods of forming thermoelectric skutterudites, which can include the use of hot press processes to consolidate particles, are also disclosed. The particles to be consolidated can be derived from (e.g., grinded from), skutterudite-based bulk materials, elemental materials, other non-Skutterudite-based materials, or combinations of such materials.

Development of a Compact Eleven Feed Cryostat for the Patriot 12-m Antenna System

The Eleven antenna has constant beam width, constant phase center location, and low spillover over a decade bandwidth. Therefore, it can feed a reflector for high aperture efficiency (also called feed efficiency). It is equally important that the feed efficiency and its subefficiencies not be degraded significantly by installing the feed in a cryostat. The MIT Haystack Observatory, with guidance from Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers University, has been working to integrate the Eleven antenna into a compact cryostat suitable for the Patriot 12-m antenna. Since the analysis of the feed efficiencies in this presentation is purely computational, we first demonstrate the validity of the computed results by comparing them to measurements. Subsequently, we analyze the dependence of the cryostat size on the feed efficiencies, and, lastly, the Patriot 12-m subreflector is incorporated into the computational model to assess the overall broadband efficiency of the antenna system.
