An experimental study of high Tc superconducting microstrip transmission lines at 35 GHz and the effect of film morphology

Microstrip transmission lines in the form of ring resonators were fabricated from a number of in-situ grown laser ablated films and post-annealed co-sputtered YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films. The properties of these resonators were measured at 35 GHz and the observed performance is examined in light of the critical temperature (Tc) and film thickness and also the film morphology which is different for the two deposition techniques. It is found that Tc is a major indicator of the film performance for each growth type with film thickness becoming important as it decreases towards 100 A. It is also found that the films with a mixed grain orientation (both a axis and c axis oriented grains) have poorer microwave properties as compared with the primarily c axis oriented material. This is probably due to the significant number of grain boundaries between the different crystallites, which may act as superconducting weak links and contribute to the surface resistance.

Ellipsometric study of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) laser ablated and co-evaporated films

High temperature superconducting films of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (YBCO) were grown on SrTiO3, LaAl03, and YSZ substrates using two techniques: excimer laser ablation with in situ annealing and co-evaporation of Y, Cu, and BaF2 with ex-situ annealing. Film thicknesses were typically 5000 A, with predominant c-axis alignment perpendicular to the substrate. Critical temperatures up to Tc(R = 0) = 90 K were achieved by both techniques. Ellipsometric measurements were taken in the range 1.6 to 4.3 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The complex dielectric function of the laser ablated films was reproducible from run to run, and was found to be within 10 percent of that previously reported for (001) oriented single crystals. A dielectric overlayer was observed in these films, with an index of refraction of approximately 1.55 and nearly zero absorption. For the laser ablated films the optical properties were essentially independent of substrate material. The magnitude of the dielectric function obtained for the co-evaporated films was much lower than the value reported for single crystals, and was sample dependent.

Microwave Conductivity of Laser Ablated YBa2Cu3O7-delta Superconducting Films and Its Relation to Microstrip Transmission Line Performance

We report on the values of the microwave conductivity in the normal (sigma(subN)) and superconducting (sigma*=sigma(sub1)-j sigma(sub2)) states of two laser ablated YBa2CU3O7(sigma) thin films at 35 GHz, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The films 0.7 and 0.4 micrometers) were deposited on LaA10(sub3) by laser ablation. The conductivity was obtained from the microwave power transmitted through the films and assuming a two-fluid model. Values of sigma(subN) approximately 2.3 X 10(exp5) S/m at room temperature for both films, and of sigma(sub1) approximately 6.3 X 10(exp5) and 4.6 X 10(exp5) S/m at temperatures around 80 K were obtained for the 0.7 and 0.4 micrometer films respectively. For sigma(sub2) values of 4.9 X 10(exp6) and 5.4 X 10(exp6) S/m were obtained for the 0.7 and 0.4 micrometer films at 80 K. The expected conductor losses and Q-factor of a superconducting ring resonator were calculated using these conductivity values. The theoretical values were then compared with the experimental results obtained for a resonator fabricated from one of these films.

Laser ablated high T(sub c) superconducting thin YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films on substrates suitable for microwave applications

The development of high temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin films on substrates suitable for microwave applications is of great interest for evaluating their applications for space radar, communication, and sensor systems. Thin films of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) were formed on SrTiO3, ZrO2, MgO, and LaAlO3 substrates by laser ablation. The wavelength used was 248 nm from a KrF excimer laser. During deposition the films were heated to 600 C in a flowing oxygen environment, and required no post annealing. The low substrate temperature during deposition with no post annealing gave films which were smooth, which had their c-axis aligned to the substrates, and which had grains ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 microns in size. The films being c-axis aligned gave excellent surface resistance at 35 GHz which was lower than that of copper at 77 K. At present, LaAlO3 substrates with a dielectric constant of 22, appears suitable as a substrate for microwave and electronic applications. The films were characterized by resistance-temperature measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and x ray diffraction. The highest critical transition temperatures (T sub c) are above 89 K for films on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3, above 88 K for ZrO2, and above 86 K for MgO. The critical current density (J sub c) of the films on SrTiO3 is above 2 x 10(exp 6) amperes/sq cm at 77 K. The T(sub c) and J(sub c) are reported as a function of laser power, composition of the substrate, and temperature of the substrate during deposition.

Microwave conductivity of laser ablated YBaCuO superconducting films and its relation to microstrip transmission line

The discovery of high temperature superconductor oxides has raised the possibility of a new class of millimeter and microwave devices operating at temperatures considerably higher than liquid helium temperatures. Therefore, materials properties such as conductivity, current density, and sheet resistance as a function of temperature and frequency, possible anisotropies, moisture absorption, thermal expansion, and others, have to be well characterized and understood. The millimeter wave response was studied of laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-x)/LaAlO3 thin films as a function of temperature and frequency. In particular, the evaluation of their microwave conductivity was emphasized, since knowledge of this parameter provides a basis for the derivation of other relevant properties of these superconducting oxides, and for using them in the fabrication of actual passive circuits. The microwave conductivity for these films was measured at frequencies from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The values of the conductivity are obtained from the millimeter wave power transmitted through the films, using a two fluid model.

Performance and modeling of superconducting ring resonators at millimeter-wave frequencies

Microstrip ring resonators operating at 35 GHz were fabricated from laser ablated YBCO thin films deposited on lanthanum aluminate substrates. They were measured over a range of temperatures and their performance compared to identical resonators made of evaporated gold. Below 60 Kelvin the superconducting strip performed better than the gold, reaching an unloaded Q approximately 1.5 times that of gold at 25 K. A shift in the resonant frequency follows the form predicted by the London equations. The Phenomenological Loss Equivalence Method is applied to the ring resonator and the theoretically calculated Q values are compared to the experimental results.

Millimeter wave surface resistance of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R=Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) superconductors

The measurements are reported of the millimeter wave surface resistance R(sub s) at 58.6 GHz of bulk samples of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R = Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) and of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The bulk samples were prepared by cold pressing the powders of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) into one in. disks. The powders were prepared by several sinterings in one atmosphere of oxygen at 925 C, with grindings between sinterings, to obtain the superconducting phase. The thin films were deposited on SrTiO3 and LaGaO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. Each sample was measured by replacing the end wall of a gold-plated Te sub 013 circular mode copper cavity with the sample and determining the cavity quality factor . From the difference in the Q-factor of the cavity, with and without the sample, the R(sub s) of the sample was determined.

Photoresponse of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) granular and epitaxial superconducting thin films

The response is reported of thin films of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) with either a very grainy or a smooth epitaxial morphology to visible radiation. SrTiO3 substrates were employed for both types of films. The grainy films were formed by sequential multi-layer electron beam evaporation while the epitaxial films were formed by laser ablation. Both films were patterned into H shaped detectors via a negative photolithographic process employing a Br/ethanol etchant. The bridge region of the H was 50 microns wide. The patterned films formed by laser ablation and sequential evaporation had critical temperatures of 74 K and 72 K respectively. The bridge was current biased and illuminated with chopped He-Ne laser radiation and the voltage developed in response to the illumination was measured. A signal was detected only above the critical temperature and the peak of the response coincided with the resistive transition for both types of films although the correspondence was less exact for the grainy film. The details of the responses and their analysis are presented.

Epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7 films were grown on several microwave substrates. Surface resistance and penetration depth measurements were performed to determine the quality of these films. Here the properties of these films on key microwave substrates are described. The fabrication and characterization of a microwave ring resonator circuit to determine transmission line losses are presented. Lower losses than those observed in gold resonator circuits were observed at temperatures lower than critical transition temperature. Based on these results, potential applications of microwave superconducting circuits such as filters, resonators, oscillators, phase shifters, and antenna elements in space communication systems are identified.

Sequentially evaporated thin Y-Ba-Co-O superconducting films on microwave substrates

The development of high T sub c superconducting thin films on various microwave substrates is of major interest in space electronic systems. Thin films of YBa2Cu3O(7-Delta) were formed on SrTiO3, MgO, ZrO2 coated Al2O3, and LaAlO3 substrates by multi-layer sequential evaporation and subsequent annealing in oxygen. The technique allows controlled deposition of Cu, BaF2 and Y layers, as well as the ZrO buffer layers, to achieve reproducibility for microwave circuit fabrication. The three layer structure of Cu/BaF2/Y is repeated a minimum of four times. The films were annealed in an ambient of oxygen bubbled through water at temperatures between 850 C and 900 C followed by slow cooling (-2 C/minute) to 450 C, a low temperature anneal, and slow cooling to room temperature. Annealing times ranged from 15 minutes to 5 hrs. at high temperature and 0 to 6 hr. at 450 C. Silver contacts for four probe electrical measurements were formed by evaporation followed with an anneal at 500 C. The films were characterized by resistance-temperature measurements, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Critical transition temperatures ranged from 30 K to 87 K as a function of the substrate, composition of the film, thicknesses of the layers, and annealing conditions. Microwave ring resonator circuits were also patterned on these MgO and LaAlO3 substrates.

Millimeter wave transmission studies of YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films in the 26.5 to 40.0 GHz frequency range

Millimeter wave transmission measurements through YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films on MgO, ZrO2 and LaAlO3 substrates, are reported. The films (approx. 1 micron) were deposited by sequential evaporation and laser ablation techniques. Transition temperatures T sub c, ranging from 89.7 K for the Laser Ablated film on LaAlO3 to approximately 72 K for the sequentially evaporated film on MgO, were obtained. The values of the real and imaginary parts of the complex conductivity, sigma 1 and sigma 2, are obtained from the transmission data, assuming a two fluid model. The BCS approach is used to calculate values for an effective energy gap from the obtained values of sigma sub 1. A range of gap values from 2 DELTA o/K sub B T sub c = 4.19 to 4.35 was obtained. The magnetic penetration depth is evaluated from the deduced values of sigma 2. These results are discussed together with the frequency dependence of the normalized transmission amplitude, P/P sub c, below and above T sub c.

Growth and patterning of laser ablated superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 films on LaAlO3 substrates

A high quality superconducting film on a substrate with a low dielectric constant is desired for passive microwave circuit applications. In addition, it is essential that the patterning process does not effect the superconducting properties of the thin films to achieve the highest circuit operating temperatures. YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting films were grown on lanthanum aluminate substrates using laser ablation with resulting maximum transition temperature (T sub c) of 90 K. The films were grown on a LaAlO3 which was at 775 C and in 170 mtorr of oxygen and slowly cooled to room temperature in 1 atm of oxygen. These films were then processed using photolithography and a negative photoresist with an etch solution of bromine and ethanol. Results are presented on the effect of the processing on T(sub c) of the film and the microwave properties of the patterned films.

Advantages of barium peroxide in the powder synthesis of perovskite superconductors

This paper compares reaction chemistry, material processing, and material characteristics for the solid state reaction using BaCO3 or BaO2 in the synthesis of perovskite superconductors. Results are presented for weight loss and X-ray diffraction, sample morphology and homogeneity as monitored by SEM and EDS, and the superconductivity critical temperature and ac susceptibility. Greater mass density, increased sample homogeneity, lower resistance, and improved reproducibility for material are found when BaO32 is used.

Improved synthesis of ceramic superconductors with alkaline earth peroxides - Synthesis and processing of Ba2YCu3O(7-x)

Synthesis processes for the preparation of ceramic conductors Ba2YCu3O(7-x) from BaO2 or BaCO3 in flowing O2 or N2 are described, and the characteristics of the materials produced in these processes are compared. Results of EDAX, XRD, SEM, and dc resistivity analyses demonstrated that superconducting materials made from BaO2 were more homogeneous, denser, and more metallic than materials produced from BaCO3, because of the higher reactivity of BaO2. Potential applications of this processes are discussed.

Ellipsometric and optical study of amorphous hydrogenated carbon films

A low-frequency plasma deposition system was used to prepare amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films. The growth energy was varied by changing the power and/or pressure of the plasma. Ellipsometry and optical absorption were used to obtain the optical energy gap, the density of states, and the refractive index. Ion sputtering was used in conjunction with ellipsometry and Auger electron spectroscopy to get absolute sputtering rates. The plasma deposited a-C:H is amorphous with an optical energy gap of approximately 2.0-2.4 eV. These a-C:H films have higher density and/or hardness, higher refractive index, and lower optical energy gaps with increasing energy of the particles in the plasma, while the density of states remains unchanged. These results are in agreement with, and give a fine-tuned positive confirmation to, an existing conjecture on the nature of the a-C:H films (Kaplan et al., 1985).
