A Comparison of MOCLD With PLD Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 Thin Films on LaAlO3 for Tunable Microwave Applications

Historically, tunable dielectric devices using thin crystalline Ba(x)Sr(1-x),TiO3 (BST) films deposited on lattice-matched substrates, such as LaAlO3 have generally been grown using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Highly oriented BST films can be grown by PLD but large projects are hampered by constraints of deposition area, deposition time and expense. The Metal-Organic Chemical Liquid Deposition (MOCLD) process allows for larger areas, faster turnover and lower cost. Several BST films deposited on LaAlO, by MOCLD have been tested in 16 GHz coupled microstrip phase shifters. They can be compared with many PLD BST films tested in the same circuit design. The MOCLD phase shifter performance of 293 degree phase shift with 53 V/micron dc bias and a figure of merit of 47 degree/dB is comparable to the most highly oriented PLD BST films. The PLD BST films used here have measured XRD full-width-at-half-maxima (FWHM) as low as 0.047 degrees. The best FWHM of these MOCLD BST films has been measured to be 0.058 degrees.

Current Status of Thin Film (Ba,Sr) TiO3 Tunable Microwave Components for RF Communications

The performance of proof-of-concept ferroelectric microwave devices has been moving steadily closer to the level needed for satellite and other rf communications applications. This paper will review recent progress at NASA Glenn in developing thin film Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 tunable microwave components for these applications. Phase shifters for phased array antennas, tunable filters and tunable oscillators employing microstrip and coupled microstrip configurations will be presented. Tunabilities, maximum dielectric constants, and phase shifter parameters will be discussed (e.g., coupled microstrip phase shifters with phase shift over 200 deg. at 18 GHz and a figure of merit of 74.3 deg./dB). Issues of postannealing, Mn-doping and Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 growth on sapphire and alumina substrates will be covered. The challenges of incorporating these devices into larger systems, such as yield, variability in phase shift and insertion loss, and protective coatings will also be addressed.

Superconducting Films On Microwave Dielectric Substrates

Thin films of superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta), formed on microwave dielectric substrates of SrTiO3, MgO, Al2O3 coated with ZrO2, and LaAlO3. Films formed by repeated sequential desposition of layers of Cu, BaF2, and Y in electro-beam evaporator, followed by annealing in oxygen. Technique employed gives layers uniformity and reproducibility required for fabrication of microwave circuits.

Microwave properties of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) high-transition-temperature superconducting thin films measured by the power transmission method

The microwave response of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting thin films deposited on LaAlO3, MgO, YSZ, and LaGaO3 substrates are studied. It is found that the microwave transmission properties are very weakly dependent on temperature in the normal state but change drastically upon transition to the superconducting state. In particular, the transmission decreases and there is a negative phase shift with respect to the phase at room temperature when the sample is cooled through its transition temperature. The magnetic penetration depth for all the films was determined from the surface reactance of the films. The microwave complex conductivity is determined in both the normal and the superconducting state. It is observed that both sigma1 and sigma2 increase in transition to the superconducting state. The surface resistivity is calculated for all the films.

YBCO superconducting ring resonators at millimeter-wave frequencies

Microstrip ring resonators operating at 35 GHz were fabricated from laser ablated YBCO films deposited on lanthanum aluminate substrates. They were measured over a range of temperatures and their performances compared to identical resonators made of evaporated gold. Below 60 Kelvin the superconducting strip performed better than the gold, reaching an unloaded Q approximately 1.5 times that of gold at 25 K. A shift in the resonant frequency follows the form predicted by the London equations. The Phenomenological Loss Equivalence Method is applied to the ring resonator and the theoretically calculated Q values are compared to the experimental results.

Determination of surface resistance and magnetic penetration depth of superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films by microwave power transmission measurements

A novel waveguide power transmission measurement technique was developed to extract the complex conductivity of superconducting thin films at microwave frequencies. The microwave conductivity was taken of two laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films on LaAlO3 with transition temperatures of approximately 86.3 and 82 K, respectively, in the temperature range 25 to 300 K. From the conductivity values, the penetration depth was found to be approximately 0.54 and 0.43 micron, and the surface resistance (R sub s) to be approximately 24 and 36 micro-Ohms at 36 GHz and 76 K for the two films under consideration. The R sub s values were compared with those obtained from the change in the Q-factor of a 36 GHz Te sub 011-mode (OFHC) copper cavity by replacing one of its end walls with the superconducting sample. This technique allows noninvasive characterization of high transition superconducting thin films at microwave frequencies.

An experimental study of high Tc superconducting microstrip transmission lines at 35 GHz and the effect of film morphology

Microstrip transmission lines in the form of ring resonators were fabricated from a number of in-situ grown laser ablated films and post-annealed co-sputtered YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films. The properties of these resonators were measured at 35 GHz and the observed performance is examined in light of the critical temperature (Tc) and film thickness, and also the film morphology, which is different for the two deposition techniques. It is found that Tc is a major indicator of the film performance for each growth type, with film thickness becoming important as it decreases towards 1000 A. It is also found that the films with a mixed grain orientation (both a-axis and c-axis oriented grains) have poorer microwave properties as compared with the primarily c-axis oriented material. This is probably due to the significant number of grain boundaries between the different crystallites, which may act as superconducting weak links and contribute to the surface resistance.

Electromigration failure in YBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin films

Electromigration failure in highly oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin films below the superconducting transition temperature is reported here for the first time. The film on SrTiO3 failed at 86 K, 230,000 A/sq cm, while that on LaAlO3 failed at 84 K, 930,000 A/sq cm. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis of the films after failure shows that Cu migrates preferentially away from the failure region toward the electrode.

Microwave conductivity of laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films and its relation to microstrip transmission line performance

The discovery of high temperature superconductor oxides has raised the possibility of a new class of millimeter and microwave devices operating at temperatures considerably higher than liquid helium temperatures. Therefore, materials properties such as conductivity, current density, and sheet resistance as a function of temperature and frequency, possible anisotropies, moisture absorption, thermal expansion, and others, have to be well characterized and understood. The millimeter wave response of laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/LaAlO3 thin films was studied as a function of temperature and frequency. In particular, the evaluation of their microwave conductivity was emphasized, since knowledge of this parameter provides a basis for the derivation of other relevant properties of these superconducting oxides, and for using them in the fabrication of actual passive circuits. The microwave conductivity for these films was measured at frequencies from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The values of the conductivity are obtained from the millimeter wave power transmitted through the films, using a two fluid model.

Magnetic flux relaxation in YBa2Cu3)(7-x) thin film: Thermal or athermal

The magnetic flux relaxation behavior of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin film on LaAlO3 for H is parallel to c was studied in the range 4.2 - 40 K and 0.2 - 1.0 T. Both the normalized flux relaxation rate S and the net flux pinning energy U increase continuously from 1.3 x 10(exp -2) to 3.0 x 10(exp -2) and from 70 to 240 meV respectively, as the temperature T increases from 10 to 40 K. This behavior is consistent with the thermally activated flux motion model. At low temperatures, however, S is found to decrease much more slowly as compared with kT, in contradiction to the thermal activation model. This behavior is discussed in terms of the athermal quantum tunneling of flux lines. The magnetic field dependence of U, however, is not completely understood.

Millimeter-wave surface resistance of laser-ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films

The millimeter-wave surface resistance of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films was measured in a gold-plated copper host cavity at 58.6 GHz between 25 and 300 K. High-quality laser-ablated films of 1.2-micron thickness were deposited on SrTiO3 and LaGaO3 substrates. Their transition temperatures were 90.0 and 88.9 K, with a surface resistance at 70 K of 82 and 116 milliohms, respectively. These values are better than the values for the gold-plated cavity at the same temperature and frequency.
