A small-deflection theory for curved sandwich plates

A small-deflection theory that takes into account deformations due to transverse shear is presented for the elastic-behavior analysis of orthotropic plates of constant cylindrical curvature, with consideration of buckling included. The theory is applicable primarily to sandwich construction. (author)

Critical stress of ring-stiffened cylinders in torsion

A chart in terms of nondimensional parameters is presented for the theoretical critical stress in torsion of simply supported cylinders stiffened by identical equally spaced rings of zero torsional stiffness. The results are obtained by solving the equation of equilibrium by means of the Galerkin method. Comparison of the theoretical results with experimental results indicates that ring-stiffened cylinders buckle, on the average, at a buckling stress about 15 percent below the theoretical buckling stress. Critical combinations of shear and direct axial stress for curved rectangular panels

A solution is presented for the problem of the buckling of curved rectangular panels subjected to combined shear and direct axial stress. Charts giving theoretical critical combinations of shear and direct axial stress are presented for panels having five different length-width ratios. Because the actual critical compressive stress of rectangular panels having substantial curvature is known to be much lower than the theoretical value, a semiempirical method of analysis of curved panels subjected to combined shear and direct axial stress is presented for use in design.
