A hypersonic force and moment test of a 0.006 scale model (466) of the 330.2 inch diameter external tank in the Ames Research Center 3.5 foot hypersonic wind tunnel (TA9F)

Data were obtained in a series of wind tunnel tests on the space shuttle external tank over an angle of attack range from 0 deg to 180 deg at Mach numbers of 5.3 and 10.4. Body roll angles varied from 0 deg to 315 deg for the Mach number 10.4 tests. A constant roll angle of 180 deg was used for all Mach number 5.3 tests. The effects of protuberances and Reynolds number on the force and moment coefficients were investigated.

Static stability characteristics of the space shuttle external tank (MSFC model 458) during reentry in the MSFC 14-inch TWT (TA1F)

Data obtained in a wind tunnel test of a 0.003-scale modified MCR 0200 space shuttle external tank (ET) model tested at reentry conditions in the MSFC 14-inch trisonic wind tunnel are presented. This test is a continuation of a series of tests conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the ET during reentry. Three Mach numbers were investigated: 1.96, 3.48, and 4.96. The angle-of-attack range was -10 deg to 190 deg. Eight roll positions of the model from 0 deg to 315 deg were tested. The run schedule consisted of 162 runs. No. 120 grit was applied randomly over the model throughout the test.

Determination of aerodynamic stability and drag of the Titan 3 C SRM during entry

An experimental aerodynamic investigation was conducted in the NASA/MSFC 14-inch Trisonic Wind Tunnel on a 0.00736 scale model of Titan 3 C Solid Rocket Motor (SRM). Static stability and drag data were obtained for Mach numbers of 0.6 to 4.96, angles of attack of minus 10 deg to 190 deg, and roll angles of 0 to 360 deg. The resulting data will be used to predict the dynamic motions of the SRM during entry which will then be compared to flight data. This comparison will improve and lend credibility to methods for predicting the entry dynamics of the space shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB), which is needed for recovery studies and design of the parachute recovery system.

Space shuttle: Determination of the aerodynamic interference between the space shuttle orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket booster on a 0.004 scale ascent configuration

Wind tunnel tests were conducted to determine the aerodynamic interference between the space shuttle orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket booster on a 0.004 scale ascent configuration. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded over an angle of attack range from minus 10 to plus 10 degrees at zero degree sideslip. A sideslip range of minus 10 to plus 10 degrees at zero degree angle of attack was also tested. The Mach number range was varied from 0.6 to 4.96 with Reynolds number varying between 4.9 and 6.8 times one million per foot.

Space shuttle: An investigation of the load distribution over the SRB and external tank of a 0.004 scale model of the 049 space shuttle launch configuration

A study was conducted in a trisonic wind tunnel to determine the load distribution over the external tank and solid rocket boosters of the space shuttle launch configuration. The external tank was sting-supported and the solid rocket boosters and orbiter were mounted directly on the external tank. The external tank was, instrumented with 152 pressure orifices and the solid rocket boosters contained 78 orifices. The pressure data were obtained for various combinations of the three geometric components as the gap size between the external tank and the solid rocket boosters, angle of attack, and angle of sideslip were varied. Mach numbers ranged from 0.8 to 1.96.

Aerodynamic static stability and control effectiveness of a parametric shuttle launch configuration

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in the NASA/MSFC 14-inch Trisonic Wind Tunnel on a 0.004-scale model of the NR ATP baseline Shuttle launch configuration. The test model consisted of the NR ATP baseline orbiter, external tank, and SRB's with nozzles. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded over an angle of attack range from minus 10 deg to 10 deg at zero degrees sideslip and angle of sideslip range of minus 10 deg to 10 deg at zero angle of attack for a Mach range of 0.6 to 4.96. Rudder flare was constant at 10 deg during the entire test. The purpose of the test was to define the performance, stability, and control characteristics of the launch configuration as well as to investigate the buildup effect of two geometrical parameters.

Space shuttle: Aerodynamic stability, control effectiveness and drag characteristics of a shuttle orbiter configuration at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 4.96

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted in the NASA/MSFC 14-inch Trisonic Wind Tunnel from Sept. 27 to Oct. 7, 1972 on a 0.004 scale model of the NR ATP baseline shuttle orbiter configuration. Six component aerodynamic force and moment data were recorded at 0 deg sideslip angle over an angle of attack range from 0 to 20 deg for Mach numbers of 0.6 to 4.96, 20 to 40 deg for Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.9, 2.99, and 4.96, and 40 to 60 deg for Mach numbers of 2.99 and 4.96. Data were obtained over a sideslip range of -10 to 10 deg at 0, 10, and 20 deg angles of attack over the Mach range and 30 and 50 deg at Mach numbers of 2.99 and 4.96. The purpose of the test was to define the buildup, performance, stability, and control characteristics of the orbiter configuration. The model parameters, were: body alone; body-wing; body-wing-tail; elevon deflections of 0, 10, -20, and -40 deg both full and split); aileron deflections of plus or minus 10 deg (full and split); rudder flares of 10 and 40 deg, and a rudder deflection of 15 deg about the 10 and 40 deg flare positions.

Space shuttle: MSFC booster (B-005) low speed static stability and landing investigation, high speed grit study

An experimental wind tunnel investigation on the Marshall Space Flight Center's (MSFC) booster configuration of the space shuttle system is discussed. Tests were conducted in the MSFC 14" x 14" trisonic wind tunnel. Parameters investigated include; (1) a landing study at Mach number of .3 with the booster at three discrete heights above a ground plane (maximum height above ground plane was six inches) and: (2) a static stability study at subsonic Mach numbers, which included eleven deflections of 0, 10, 20 and 30 degrees with canard deflections of 0, 5, 10 and 15 degrees. Both a trapezoidial and a delta shaped canard were investigated at the above conditions; a grit size study was made over the entire Mach range from .3 to 5.0.
